Do-it-yourself canopy: how to quickly build a beautiful and reliable canopy from scrap materials. Wooden lean-to canopy We build a canopy with our own hands from wood

When landscaping your summer cottage or the area near a private house, you should pay attention to one of the most popular types of small architectural structures - wooden canopies. Next, we will look at why it is made of wood and what the most popular designs of these wooden sheds are.

Wood is a warm and light natural material, beautiful and durable. Among supporters of metal and stone structures, there is a widespread belief that wood is quickly damaged by mold, moisture, and ultraviolet rays, and therefore the material is not practical. Such consequences are very likely, but these problems are easily solved by treating with various impregnating, antiseptic and protective compounds. Colored wood-protective impregnations can also give wood noble shades of valuable species.

Speaking about wooden canopies, it seems like a simple structure, without artistic and decorative elements. Currently, this is not the case; you can buy a wooden canopy with openwork slats or carved pillars.

The roof on two levels in the Japanese style looks very unusual and original. The supports of the canopy can be covered with a pergola, which will allow the canopy to fit into almost any style of landscape design of a private house or summer cottage. For example, slanting pergolas for eco-style, country or Mediterranean style, smooth pergolas are perfect for the sophisticated East.

What materials are best to use for a wooden canopy?

The price of wooden canopies depends on the materials used. Below we list the most commonly used ones in our production:

  • Wood species: pine, larch. The supporting frame posts are made of laminated veneer lumber or solid wood with a section of 35x90, 70x90, 90x90, 140x140 or 200x200 mm.
  • The joist system is an antiseptic-treated timber with a cross-section of 50x100, 100x150 or 50x150 mm.
  • For the flooring, deck or tongue and groove boards made of pine or larch with a thickness of 28, 35 mm, as well as wood-polymer composite (WPC) are used.
  • The walls are sheathed with 12.5 mm eurolining, 16 mm imitation timber, 28 mm block house or decorative pergola (10x40mm slats).
  • Rafter system: rafters 3 5x90 mm, 35x140 mm with a pitch of at least 0.8 m.
  • The roof is hemmed with a continuous roofing sheet made of imitation timber 16 mm

All materials are chamber-dried spruce, pine, larch, humidity does not exceed 10-12% - this is a very important point. It is not worth buying a wooden canopy cheaply, because most likely it will be made from raw boards, which will subsequently lead to deformation of the entire structure.

Types of roof and roofing materials

The choice of roofing material directly depends on the type of roof:

  • single slope;
  • gable;
  • hipped;
  • six-slope;
  • eight slope;
  • flat;
  • in Japanese style, two-level.

After the roof type is selected, the roofing material is selected:

  • Rolled double-layer fused roofing, suitable for a pitched or flat roof.
  • Flexible bitumen shingles are an excellent option for roofing with complex shapes.
  • Ondulin, environmentally friendly and safe - for gable and pitched roofs.

Types of canopies and application

Wooden canopies can be used as:

  • Canopy to protect the car from external influences
  • Drovnik
  • Protection of tools and equipment
  • Gazebo for relaxation and barbecue
  • Frame for greenhouses, conservatories
  • Extension to a house, bathhouse, garage
  • Gallery from the gate or gate to the entrance to the house
  • Veranda
  • Sun and weather protection for children's playgrounds

Foundation

Before you buy a wooden canopy, you should think about what you plan to install it on.

Types of foundation:

  1. The pile-screw foundation is very popular, among its advantages we note: speed of installation (just one day), reliability (warranty for about 7 years) and, importantly, such a foundation will not be expensive.
  2. Also, a wooden canopy can be installed on a concrete platform, the arrangement process is more labor-intensive and lengthy (7-10 days), the support pillars in this case will be attached to anchor bolts.
  3. On sand concrete blocks 200x200x400 mm, you can install structures such as a firewood shed or a gazebo-canopy.

General requirements for wooden canopies

To ensure the strength, reliability, ease of use and beautiful appearance of a wooden canopy when building it with your own hands, you must follow the following rules:

  1. The construction of support posts is best done from rounded logs (10-20 cm in diameter), profiled or glued beams (10-15 cm in cross-section). To create a rafter system and a small canopy, beams 6*6, 6*4, 5*5 or 4*5 cm are suitable.
  2. The selection of roofing material is carried out taking into account the slope of the slope and the design of the rafter system:
    • polycarbonate – does not weigh down the structure and is suitable for decking of various configurations;
    • corrugated sheeting is an inexpensive option for organizing a single-pitched and gable roof for a wooden shed in the yard;
    • soft tiles - require continuous sheathing, the material is convenient for finishing hipped and domed roofs of gazebos.
  3. The canopy should be sloped to allow precipitation to quickly roll off. The minimum angle of inclination of the ceiling is 5-10%.
  4. The dimensions of the structure are determined taking into account the functionality of the suspended structure:
    • arrangement of a place to relax - 2 sq. m. m per person;
    • the optimal size for decorating a gazebo with a barbecue is 4*6 m;
    • creating a carport: the width of the platform is equal to the width of the car plus 1 m, the length of the platform is up to 6 m;
    • terraces attached to the house, as a rule, extend along the entire length of the adjacent wall;
    • canopies over the porch should overlap the steps by 30 cm on each side;
    • the height of any wooden canopy in the yard is at least 2 m, optimally 2.5 m.

Important! Before installation, all wooden structural elements must be treated with antiseptic and fire-resistant impregnation.

Characteristics of different types of wood

Making a lean-to canopy near the wall of a house

Wall-mounted wooden canopies made of timber are fixed with one edge to the facade of the house, and with the other - to the supporting pillars. Some structures do not have a horizontal beam on the wall of the building. In this case, the entire load of the floor falls on the vertical supports placed at the corners of the canopy.

Wall-mounted open canopy

Drawing development and materials preparation

When designing a single-pitch structure, it is necessary to schematically display the main parameters:

  • the width of the projection of the roof onto the ground, taking into account the overhang over the framing beam of 30 cm;
  • slope angle;
  • height of rafter attachment at the top (2.9 m) and bottom points;
  • the length of the support pillars, taking into account the recess into the foundation, is at least 0.5 m;
  • installation step of support beams is about 2.5 m;
  • The pitch of the rafters is 60 cm.

Based on the design sketch, the material consumption is calculated. To create a wooden canopy at your dacha with your own hands you will need:

  • bars for racks – 90*90 mm;
  • wall supporting beam – 50*150 mm;
  • rafter boards – 50*150 mm;
  • polycarbonate sheets.

Diagram of a lean-to canopy

Calculate the roof area for polycarbonate cladding as follows:

  1. Draw a triangle: one leg is the length of the canopy, the second is the difference between the heights of the structure near the wall and at the end of the roof.
  2. Using the Pythagorean formula, determine the hypotenuse - this will be the width of the canopy.
  3. Knowing the parameters of the roof, it will be possible to calculate its area and calculate the consumption of polycarbonate.

Before making a canopy, the wooden elements must be prepared:

  1. Spread the lumber and dry it in the shade for five days.
  2. Clean the surface of the wood with a grinder or sandpaper.
  3. Treat beams and boards with bactericidal impregnation. After drying, the wooden elements are ready for installation.

Installation of supporting beam and vertical posts

Procedure:

  1. Apply markings on the wall of the house for installation of the beam.
  2. Secure the supporting support along its entire length with self-tapping screws to the wall.
  3. To strengthen the structure, a beam-holding mechanism in the form of a triangle can be made from beams.

Fastening the horizontal load-bearing beam

Installation of support posts under canopies made of boards and logs is carried out in three ways:

  • fastening the timber directly into the formwork;
  • using formwork and thrust bearing;
  • fixing the thrust bearing to the existing concrete or wooden base.

The choice of option depends on the massiveness of the structure and the existing foundation. For a small canopy, the first method is suitable:

  1. Dig holes for support beams 90 cm deep.
  2. Fill the pits with crushed stone to a depth of 10-20 cm.
  3. Cover the lower part of the beam-post with roofing felt.
  4. Install the pillars, level them and fill them with concrete.
  5. Secure the support beams with boards and leave for a week until the foundation is strengthened.

Construction of the rafter system and sheathing

Attaching the beam to the support pillars can be done in different ways: strengthening the truss structure with diagonal beams, fixing it with long screws or metal plates.

High reliability is ensured by a combination of several methods:

  1. Cut grooves in the racks.
  2. Place the supporting beam into the groove and secure it with fasteners.
  3. When the support is installed along the entire length of the canopy, install corner jumpers.

Installation of sheathing under the canopy

Construction of the sheathing:

  1. Apply markings for cutting out grooves on the beams for the sheathing.
  2. Prepare holes about 4 cm deep at the edges of the boards.
  3. Place the beams onto the supporting beams.
  4. Secure the installation with metal corners.

Applying sealing tape to polycarbonate

Fastening roofing material

Let's take a step-by-step look at how to build a wooden canopy using polycarbonate. To fix the roofing material, thermal washers with self-tapping screws, connecting and trim profiles are used.

Operating procedure:

  1. Cut the polycarbonate plastic so that the joints of the sheets are on the sheathing. The cut is made between the stiffeners.
  2. Apply sealing tape to the ends of the panels.
  3. At the points of attachment to the supporting beam, use a drill to make holes every 30-40 cm, the distance to the edge is 4 cm.
  4. The polycarbonate is fixed to the wooden frame through a seal using self-tapping screws and a washer.
  5. The second sheet is connected to the first by means of a connecting strip placed along the roof sheathing.
  6. Corners are finished with corner profiles.

Fastening polycarbonate through profiles

Some leave the roof open and plant vines near the site, which grow and create a natural awning. Photos of open wooden canopies for the house clearly demonstrate the attractiveness of the design.

Four Post Pergola for Patio

A pergola is a spectacular decoration and a practical element of landscape design. You can build a simple model with a flat roof from inexpensive materials: pine beams and beams. Let's consider the technology of creating a canopy for a patio measuring 2.6 * 3 m.

Required materials and tools

Before making a wooden canopy with your own hands, you should assess the condition of the site and decide on the installation location. It is advisable to lay out the area under the patio in advance with paving slabs, natural stone or decking boards. You can arrange a canopy on your country lawn.

Pergola in the garden

To make a pergola you will need:

  • 4 beams 100*50 mm, 4 m long - horizontal load-bearing supports for attaching the sheathing;
  • 9 beams 100*50 mm, 3 m long - for sheathing;
  • 4 beams 100*100 mm, 3 m long - supporting vertical beams.

To work you need to have on hand:

  • jigsaw or hand-held circular saw;
  • drill and wood bits;
  • chisel and hammer;
  • level, cord and plumb line;
  • square, tape measure and pencil;
  • wood processing products;
  • Portland cement grade M-400 – 4 bags;
  • fasteners (nuts, bolts and washers).

Marking the area for installation of support posts

Fixing the posts and assembling the roof

Pergola assembly sequence:

  1. On the site, use pegs and rope to mark the location of the support beams according to the dimensions of the future canopy. You should get a rectangle 2.6*3.0 m. Check the evenness of the diagonals.
  2. At the marked points, drill holes under the beams with a depth of 50 cm.
  3. Prepare beams and beams:
    • cut the edges of the vertical supports obliquely, measuring 5 cm in width and 12 cm in length;
    • cut horizontal beams in the same way;
    • at the ends of the beams under the sheathing, prepare spikes measuring 9*5 cm;
    • treat the wood with protective impregnations and paint it.
  4. Install the support beams in the holes and level them in height using a level and a cord.
  5. Fill the holes with cement mortar and leave it until it sets completely.
  6. Mount horizontal beams on the support shelves so that they protrude 40 cm beyond the edges. Drill holes through and secure with screws and nuts.
  7. Apply markings for the placement of nine cross beams
  8. Secure the crossbars with long screws.

Fastening crossbars

Decorative elements for pergola

Strongly climbing plants are suitable for shading a canopy: grapes, hops, wisteria, clematis, actinidia, Chinese lemongrass and wood pliers.

Pergola with young vineyards

To hide from the scorching sun, the top of the pergola is covered with a fabric tent, and the sides are decorated with thick curtains. For comfortable evening gatherings, lamps are installed.

Creating a multifunctional gable canopy

When building a wooden canopy for a large area, it is advisable to install a gable roof. The structure can be used as a parking lot, a summer kitchen or an open storage area.

Preparatory activities: design calculations

The dimensions of the awning are determined based on its functional purpose and area of the site. When creating a parking lot, you need to take into account the dimensions and number of cars; when building a wooden canopy over a barbecue with your own hands, you need to take into account the size of the barbecue, the need to install a chimney and place additional furniture on the site.

Gable barbecue canopy

An example of design calculation for 9*7.5 m:

  1. The plane of each slope is 5*7.5 m, that is, the total roof area is 75 square meters. m.
  2. Supports are wooden beams installed on concrete formwork and bearings. The diameter of the concrete pillars is 30 cm. Each support is capable of supporting a weight of 1 ton. Taking into account the snow loads of the region and the weight of the roof, a canopy with an area of 68 sq. m. m will need to install 8 supports.
  3. The immersion depth of concrete supports is 1.5 m.

Installation and commissioning technology

The order of work can be divided into the following stages.

Stage 1. Installation of supports:

  1. Use a hand auger or drilling rig to make holes.
  2. Make formwork for pillars from paper pipes, rising 40 cm above ground level.
  3. Prepare the concrete and pour the columns.
  4. Insert brackets with a cross section of 15 cm into the “fresh” concrete.
  5. After 3 weeks, secure the prepared beams in the support posts.

Attaching support beams to concrete formwork

Stage 2. Strapping the structure:

  1. Attach the supporting frame beams to the racks (double boards 30*4 cm). Bolts 1 cm in diameter are suitable for fixing.
  2. Add a second supporting board, tighten all the parts with bolts.
  3. Make reinforcement - fix the braces from 10*10 cm beams.

Upper frame of the canopy structure

Stage 3. Rafter system:

  1. Assemble the roof trusses in the form of a triangle from 10*4 cm boards. It is better to do the work on the ground.
  2. Install intermediate veins from the board - this will ensure the rigidity of the system.
  3. Attach the trusses to the supporting beams every 80-90 cm.

Stage 4. Roof sheathing:

  1. Finish the ends of the roof with boards or plywood.
  2. Lay OSB sheets 1.2 cm thick on the truss.
  3. Secure the waterproofing material.
  4. Cover the roof with corrugated sheets or metal tiles.

Covering the deck with roofing material

Stage 5. Installation of drainage:

  1. Attach hook holders along the perimeter of the flooring, providing a slope towards the drainage system. Installation step – 50 cm.
  2. Mount the pipe on the holders.
  3. Cut a gutter at the drainage point and install a funnel.
  4. Using the elbow, set the direction of the pipe.
  5. Install clamps at pipe joints.

Assembly diagram for a simple canopy over a porch

The easiest way is to make a wooden canopy over a gable-type porch with your own hands. First of all, measurements are taken and transferred to the drawing. It should be shown schematically:

  • visor depth;
  • slope length;
  • width of crossbars;
  • the distance between the lowest points of the two slopes.

Visor diagram

Assembly sequence:

  1. Make rafter corners from beams whose ends are beveled at 45°.
  2. Assemble vertical support structures from two perpendicularly located beams and jibs.
  3. Secure the supporting beams to the wall on either side of the porch.
  4. Attach rafters to the wall above the front door with emphasis on vertical beams.
  5. After installing all the rafters, install the sheathing and ridge beam.
  6. Sheathe the roof structure from below with thin beams, and lay metal tiles on top of the sheathing.

The variety of types and purposes of wooden yard sheds allows you to choose the appropriate model and build it yourself. The work uses inexpensive materials and ordinary tools that are in the arsenal of an amateur carpenter.

Sooner or later, any homeowner needs to build a wooden canopy for their home. Many people are afraid to start building a wooden canopy for their house with their own hands, thinking that this process is complicated and time-consuming. But there is nothing complicated in the arrangement of this structure.

Design and decoration of a wooden canopy for the house

Let's look at several ways to attach a canopy to a building. Having understood the essence of the design, you can modify and build it yourself.

Wood is an environmentally friendly, affordable material, reliable and safe for humans, which is the main factor why this material has been in demand for many years; it is distinguished by its warmth, naturalness, and color. These factors allow this material to bring in uniqueness and beauty.

Of course, wood does not have high strength coefficients, unlike stone and iron structures. Wooden structures are subject to rot and attacks from insects and mice. But this can be avoided if done correctly and with fixing solutions. The varnish also has its own profound effect, and the varnished wood itself looks gorgeous.

Wooden canopy design option

When it comes to wooden sheds, some people think that they are simple, nondescript structures. But everything will depend on the imagination, the desire of the average person to correctly draw up a project. You can decorate the designs with filigree carvings, and. At the same time, take into account the image of the garden where the canopy will be located, next to the house or separately.

Important! The entire structure should look proportional and interesting. This is the only way a canopy attached to a wooden house will please you.

What types of canopies are there?

They are classified according to design features, and are:

  • single-pitched;
  • inclined;
  • straight;
  • multifaceted.

Canopies can be divided according to location:

The material can also be different:

  • stone;
  • brick;
  • combined;
  • tree.

The most popular among ordinary people is a wooden canopy. This is not surprising, since the design is very simple to implement and does not require much effort or significant costs. Such work as making a canopy can be done by almost every homeowner. The first step is the project.

Project development

The design for the structure is mandatory, as it solves the main problems in analyzing the conditions of the structure. Especially if the device is attached to a finished building. Data about the base and wall of the house are extremely important, as are acclimatization conditions (wind load, amount of precipitation in winter, location relative to the cardinal directions in the location chosen for the construction).

Scheme with dimensions of the canopy for the house

In addition, it would not be superfluous to take care of the decorative details, types of roofing that are preferable in a particular situation, and select the roof shape and size. The more detailed the project, the easier it is to implement. Competent digital calculations will help you find out the amount of materials and mandatory construction costs. The easiest way.

Installation of supports

The first thing you need to take care of is what the canopy will stand on near the wooden house. Some craftsmen advise placing a canopy on simple wooden logs and making a sheathing and roof on them. This is a possible construction option, but it may happen that after a while there will be heavy rain, and then the canopy may simply move away from the building. And if the ground is loose, then the canopy can become very skewed. Don't forget to take this into account when you design your project.

Scheme for installing canopy supports

For this reason, the canopy should only be installed on, this will guarantee that no bad weather will harm the stability of the canopy. This will be a kind of foundation, and therefore its arrangement needs to be considered step by step.

After this, all that remains is to install decks with a diameter of 30 centimeters, along which the primary piping will go.

Support beam with vertical posts

Action plan:

Support posts can be installed in several ways:

  • fasten the beam directly to the formwork;
  • install the thrust bearing in the formwork, and then attach the timber to it;
  • fixing the thrust bearing directly to the wooden or concrete base.

The mounting option is selected based on the specific weight of the structure. If you plan to build a small canopy, then the first method will be an excellent option. If the specific gravity is large, you need to choose the second or third option.

Installation of rafters

The rafter system requires care and precision. For rafters you need to take 150x50 mm timber. This section is taken for a span of six meters. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the specific gravity of the structure and the minimum slope. The step between the rafters should be no more than one meter. One side of the beam needs to be firmly secured to the support beam, the other is laid on the rack. The rafters must be positioned strictly perpendicular.

There are several ways to secure the rafter system:

The rafters should lie at the same level so that there is no distortion in the roof.

Lathing:

  1. You need to make markings on the rafters to cut out the grooves.
  2. Cut small grooves 4 cm deep.
  3. Insert the boards into the grooves of the supporting rafters.
  4. Once the sheathing is installed, you need to secure the entire system with corners.

Once the sheathing is assembled, you can begin attaching the roofing material.

Roof installation

Roofing material can be different, starting from ordinary slate and ending with polycarbonate.

The process of installing a canopy roof on a house

Let's look at how to cover a wooden canopy with the latest material. For installation, you need to prepare self-tapping screws with thermal washers, a trim profile, and connectors.

Procedure:

Interesting! Some owners of houses with a canopy do not cover the roof with roofing material, but simply plant it around the canopy, growing to form a natural and beautiful awning. Video about making a wooden canopy with your own hands.

Canopy over the porch

When starting to build a wooden canopy over the porch, carefully calculate everything and make a drawing. It is necessary not only to decide on the length of the beams, but also to calculate the angle of inclination. This is necessary so that during the construction process there is no large distortion.

There are no standard sizes for this structure; you need to calculate it individually based on the size of the porch. The height of the structure should be comfortable for residents.

The tallest person should stand quietly on the porch without touching the roof. The tilt angle cannot exceed 35 degrees. Advice. If you don’t know how to make calculations, then lay out the material on the ground with which you plan to cover it, the resulting rectangle needs to be measured - this will be the size of the canopy over the porch.

Design and decoration of a wooden canopy over the porch

Tools and materials

To build a canopy over the porch with your own hands, you need the following material:

  • beam 150x150 mm, for the rafter system and supports;
  • a wooden block 7.5x7.5 cm for sheathing and a board 2.5 cm;
  • As soon as the concrete hardens, you need to cut the beam to the desired height and attach a second beam for support.

Advice. You need to try to make the roof so that the snow does not cake on it; to do this, for every 1 meter of roof length we make supports 10 centimeters below the support beam attached to the wall.
Lathing:

Roof installation:

  • as soon as the sheathing is ready, it needs to be treated against mold and rot;
  • installation of roofing material begins from the free edge;
  • secure with nails or screws;
  • ready to decorate the canopy.

If initially in the project you did not provide for a veranda or terrace, a very convenient thing, and in a hot climate simply necessary, then you may well fill this gap by building an additional canopy for the house. With modern construction technology and the availability of materials, you can completely cope with the task with your own hands. Regardless of whether you use metal beams or wooden sheathing for the improvised one.

Canopy for the house

At least in constructive terms, everyone canopy for the house very similar to all others, but still, before construction, it is customary to distinguish them according to their future functional purpose; both the arrangement of the foundation and the calculated strength of all supports depend on this. The need to cover a certain area with a roof arises when you plan to make a summer kitchen next to the house, an additional fully glazed gazebo for autumn-spring tea parties. Or maybe you want to protect your car parked outside from rain and snow, or you want to protect the porch and front door area. A canopy may be needed even when the living room on the first floor is located on the sunny side of the house and gets very hot during the day. It is the canopy, like the visor of a hat, that helps solve this problem and improve the microclimate in the room.

Before building, you will need to visualize your project, enter the building into . We are not talking about using special computer programs; such a visualization can simply be drawn with colored pencils, but this technique will allow you to most clearly determine not only the dimensions, but also the material that you will use for construction.

Shed adjacent to the house, can be made of several basic materials: metal, wood or brick (we are talking about brick supports on which the flooring is already installed). If we talked about this topic 15-20 years ago, then almost every craftsman would have advised making a metal welded structure, covering the roof with corrugated sheets or tiles. Today, new favorites are emerging among building materials, which have won a large segment of the market for such buildings. We are talking about transparent polycarbonate, which is many times stronger than glass, capable of withstanding heavy loads of precipitation and wind without deforming or cracking, and at the same time transmitting a lot of sunlight. Now every self-respecting builder should know.

Polycarbonate can be bent, making the roof of the most bizarre shapes, plus, its installation is not difficult due to the light weight of the material, it can be processed with a standard set of tools, cut, sawed, drilled. Compared to traditional roofing coverings, polycarbonate has only one drawback - its cost. But, of course, if you do not spend it on construction, but use it for such a necessary and useful task as building a canopy for many years to come, then it will still be better to fork out for it. Just don’t save on it by buying regular polycarbonate, without a special coating that protects the material from ultraviolet rays. Otherwise, after the first season, cloudy spots may appear on the surface and it will become fragile.

Canopy in front of the house

By design canopy in front of the house It can be either installed on permanent supports or cantilevered. If everything is more or less clear with the supports, they are what is most often meant, but the cantilever varieties are more likely referred to as a process, because the console is attached directly to the house. The maximum size of such a canopy is 2 meters, but is this so small, is it possible to cover the porch and front door with a small canopy?

In fact, cantilever structures allow you to get a fairly large terrace for relaxing around the perimeter of the house, especially at that time of day when a two-meter panel or roof additionally receives maximum shade. In addition, today on the market you can find many offers of sliding cantilever structures, which, if necessary, you can extend even further, and after use, remove them to their original dimensions. Just remember that the two-meter limit is not made because the manufacturer is harmful, but for maximum wind protection of the structure. If the canopy is longer, then there is a risk that in a strong wind it will simply be torn out of place, thereby damaging the wall of the house to which it is mounted.

The canopy is large, long and wide, under which a car can hide and the whole family can have a get-together; of course, it cannot have a console design. There is no need to save money; you need to equip strong, permanent supports on which a full-fledged roof will rest, and the junction of the canopy with the residential building is closed when performing roofing work. Of course, the budget for such a building will be much higher, but taking into account the above, you will be able to make your family happy with a useful room for a long time.

Wooden canopy for the house

The design features of a residential building may require special design solutions from you. And if you have done it for a wooden house, then it’s worth doing it anyway wooden canopy for house, although it will be somewhat more expensive and more troublesome to operate. After all, wood, as a material, has that special charm that still has a significant influence on the minds of dacha owners. And if, all other things being equal, you show them the choice of a metal canopy or a wooden one, then the majority will vote for the second option.

The peculiarity of working with wood is that the room is outdoor, which means that the wood will be subject to serious atmospheric loads. Especially if your site is located in a lowland or swampy area, then you will need to additionally process each support that is to be installed according to the project. The construction of a structure is not much different from the process. You need to start with the project, calculate the future weight of all the supports and the roof in order to decide on the foundation and the number of beams.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the options for such crafts for the garden, which do not provide a continuous roof on top. Such buildings are built near modern town houses and cottages; due to their light weight, they are not at all difficult to construct and do not require such careful preparation and calculations. Upstairs, on the frame beams (mauerlat), simply lay transverse beams, which will provide quite a lot of shadow downwards. This design came to us from the architectural style of the Mediterranean region, where there is not much rainfall, but in the hot summer you want not only protection from the sun, but also air movement. If you want to get more shade, then it’s easy to cover such a roof with grapes or other climbing plants, or stretch fabric panels on top that can be easily hung up and removed.

Shed adjacent to the house

So, we will assume that the project shed adjacent to the house, you are ready, and you can begin construction work. It is necessary to mark the places for the pits of future supports; their diameter is about 20 centimeters and the depth is 50-60 (in any case, up to dense soil, be guided by your natural conditions). Each such pit is filled with up to a bucket of crushed stone, and then supports are inserted. You can also use special fasteners that are mounted inside the pit, and the beams are already attached to this fastener. The ultimate goal is to concrete supports that are level inside the hole, be it wooden beams or metal pipes. Note that the bars must be treated with special means, antiseptic impregnations, and pipes and profiles should be bought either aluminum or galvanized, which are not subject to rust, but when buying ordinary iron ones, it is better to cover their entire surface with a special primer.

Before equipping the site in the perimeter between the supports, it is worth laying electrical wiring and, if necessary, a water supply and sewerage system. After this, the floor is either filled with concrete screed, or paving slabs, decking boards are laid, or sand and crushed stone are simply poured in (for example, if you are just making a parking space for a car). After the concrete screed has dried, you can begin assembling the main structure.

We should start working on the wall of the building, to which one side of our future canopy will be attached. Special brackets are hung on it, onto which a transverse beam is mounted; it is this beam that will take on all the load-bearing loads of the entire structure. After this, you can start lathing.

Canopy in front of the house

Formation of sheathing canopy in front of the house begins with the formation of the top trim, which will become part of the future roof. At the ends of the supports that we previously installed and concreted, transverse beams are laid, which need to be used to connect all the support pillars into a single system. That is, first the perimeter is connected, and then (depending on the size of the canopy and the number of supports), and then the internal beams are laid parallel to each other. For a metal profile, the connection method is welding, and wooden beams need to be tightened together with special corners. Do not forget to check the evenness of the corners and surfaces using a special level. The weld seams on the profile are processed; they need to be thoroughly cleaned and then covered with a layer of protective paint.

Polycarbonate is cut to the dimensions you need - this is the distance between adjacent beams with a small margin for the seam. But in fact, you can use a sheet of exactly the size that is convenient for you to mount, that is, you can even attach it across a row. Cellular polycarbonate has small cells on one side to remove condensate moisture; make sure that all sheets are positioned with the cells facing down. The sheets are connected to each other using a special H-shaped profile, which will allow the seams to be made neat and airtight, but the material must be fastened into the beams with special self-tapping screws with rubberized thermal washers. You should not connect the sheets very tightly, as the material will expand as the temperature rises. Be sure to leave a certain gap for the compression seam.

You can build a wooden polycarbonate canopy with your own hands quite quickly; it is a practical structure that will help protect a small area from the sun and precipitation. It can be installed in front of the entrance to the house, on the side of the building, in addition, it can be free-standing, for example, if it is planned to build a guest parking lot.

Polycarbonate is a lightweight material, so awnings made from it can be installed on either a metal or wooden frame. But if the metal requires the use of a welding machine, the wooden structure and polycarbonate sheets can be dealt with on your own using simple tools.

Types and options of polycarbonate wood canopies

A wooden canopy can be attached to a polycarbonate house in several ways: such a structure can have different sizes, design and type of roof. There are several most common solutions:

In rare cases, you can find a direct canopy with a horizontal roof. Snow will have to be constantly removed from it in winter so that the structure does not collapse due to high load.

This is not the only option for an extension with a polycarbonate roof. You can build a veranda of any size from this material; a wooden terrace with a polycarbonate canopy will be an excellent decoration for your home. A light, practical canopy or veranda will not only provide shelter from the rain, but also a place for comfortable relaxation in the fresh air.

Choosing the right canopy material

Monolithic and cellular polycarbonate are offered in stores: these materials have the same composition, but a different structure: a monolithic sheet is a solid slab, resembling glass in transparency, only much more durable. Cellular polycarbonate has a cellular structure: air voids provide excellent heat and sound insulation qualities. Cellular material is cheaper, in addition, it can be more convenient in the installation of curved structures and structures.

Both materials require correct and careful selection: they are produced by many domestic and foreign manufacturers, and not all companies offer high-quality products.

When choosing material for a canopy, you should pay attention to some basic parameters:

Design of a canopy on a wooden frame

To build wooden polycarbonate canopies with your own hands, the drawings can be found in finished form: these are frame structures based on support posts, posts and rafters attached to them, as well as the polycarbonate sheets themselves for roof construction. If there is a need for an individual design, you can contact a specialized company, or you can try to draw up a drawing yourself.

The dimensions of the canopy or canopy depend on how they are intended to be used. Such an extension can perform various functions on the site:

The canopy may have other uses. If you place it on the side of the house, under the roof you can place tools or repair equipment, or any other items that are inconvenient to store in the house, but that need to be protected from rain.

Construction of a polycarbonate canopy with a wooden frame

You can build a canopy made of polycarbonate from wood with your own hands in a few days; it is a relatively simple structure. For it, you should prepare a solid base and choose the right material: you will need support posts made of timber, rafters and roof sheathing, as well as polycarbonate sheets in the right quantity. To fasten polycarbonate to wood, self-tapping screws with special protective washers are used; you can also take a special H-shaped profile.

The end parts of the sheets also need to be covered with a profile so that debris and dust do not accumulate in the cells over time. When installing a canopy, take into account that polycarbonate has the property of thermal expansion: when heated, the width of the sheets increases, so you need to leave gaps when attaching.

Construction work begins with drawing up drawings that indicate all dimensions. The distance between the support pillars should not be more than 2 meters, the height of the canopy at the top point is 2.7-3 meters. The support pillars are installed in a concrete base, so it is important to correctly calculate their length.

Polycarbonate sheets are cut in accordance with the project: they can only be cut in the direction of the stiffening ribs, cutting is carried out on a hard surface, and not on weight. To work with polycarbonate, you can use a construction knife, a jigsaw, and sometimes a circular saw is used for this. The frame elements are connected to each other using self-tapping screws.

Important! All wooden elements must be pre-treated with an antiseptic to ensure reliable protection against rotting. This is especially true for the lower part of the structure, which will be in constant contact with the ground. The frame can be painted or varnished for complete protection.

Installation of support posts and rafter system

The structure itself will be light in weight, so a shallow base will be sufficient for it. In the places where the pillars are installed, holes are dug into which the supports need to be lowered and filled with concrete mortar.

It is important that they are positioned vertically: correct installation must be checked using a plumb line. The concrete must be given time to harden, after which you can proceed to further stages of installation.

The area for the canopy depends on its use. If it is being built to equip a parking lot, it is necessary to create a flat concrete platform on which you can conveniently park the car.

To do this, the top layer of soil is removed, the formwork is installed at a low height, and the site is filled with concrete. Only when it is completely dry can you proceed to further construction.

If the canopy is intended to be used as a recreation area or a place for plants, the area can be paved with paving slabs. A novice craftsman can take a regular square tile, and if he has experience, he can experiment with designs. The design of the site should be in harmony with the paths on the site, and to prevent the coating from eroding over time, curbs should be installed.

The upper part of the pillars is connected using timber strapping. To attach a canopy to the house, a horizontal beam is installed on the wall; it will become a support for the rafters.

The rafters are attached to the frame and to the timber on the wall using metal fasteners. A sheathing of 2.5 cm thick boards is installed on the rafters: they will become the basis for fastening the polycarbonate.

How to attach polycarbonate to a frame

Attaching polycarbonate sheets to wood is not difficult, but you need to know a few subtleties. The frame is marked with a marker, and holes are drilled in the wood for fastening, the diameter of which should be slightly larger than the diameter of the screws.

The sheets are attached to the supports with self-tapping screws with thermal washers, which provide maximum sealed protection: when heated, the material expands, providing a strong waterproof connection. The screw heads are covered with protective caps.

For maximum protection against corrosion, it is recommended to choose galvanized self-tapping screws. They will not rust or begin to deteriorate over time. The number of screws is 6-8 per square area. This will be enough for reliable and durable fastening.

If the sheets have to be installed end-to-end, a special profile is first installed on the frame into which the sheets will be inserted with a technological gap of up to 4 mm. It will compensate for thermal expansion when the sheets heat up. Installation of profiles greatly simplifies and speeds up installation.

The edges of the canopy should extend beyond the site so that rainwater does not fall on the concrete or tiles. Attaching polycarbonate usually does not take much time, and very soon the canopy with an equipped platform will be ready for use.
