Adjusting the gaps of plastic windows of the winter-summer type. Setting up plastic windows for the winter - do it yourself

Reading time ≈ 8 minutes

Modern plastic windows are installed everywhere and everywhere, since they surpass wooden products in many respects. However, full functioning requires adjustment of the position of the plastic windows "winter-summer", which can be done independently in accordance with the instructions.

Why adjustment is required

You need to set this or that window mode according to the season. Due to the increase and decrease in temperature indicators, the windows must be closed more and less tightly. Thus, it is possible to improve the supply of fresh air to the interior of the room in the summer, and to reduce the heat loss in the winter. If the PVC window is in the "winter" position all the time, the sealing gum will become unusable due to the strong and prolonged pressure.

If you leave the window in the winter with a weak pressure, then drafts and high heat losses will arise inside the room. Often, when installing a window, the adjustment is set to the middle position, which corresponds to the "spring-autumn" mode.

When the season changes, it is advisable to make the appropriate adjustments.

When to regulate

Setting the required position is required in several cases:

  • there is a strong draft through the frame;
  • the window does not close and open well;
  • the sashes sag;
  • the window fogs up when the humidity in the room is high.

It should be borne in mind that some manufacturers (usually in the budget segment), in order to save money, install components that do not allow for adjustment.

Varieties of adjusting elements

The force with which the opening part of the window leans against the frame is adjusted by special elements called pins. They are located on the lateral parts and on top of the valves.

The number, appearance and location of these elements may differ both from the cost of the windows and from the manufacturer. The most common are:

Sequence of adjustment of PVC windows

To adjust plastic windows with your own hands and set the "winter-summer" mode, you need to familiarize yourself with the step-by-step steps of this process.

Instrument preparation

To carry out adjustment work, you will need the following list of tools:

  • hex key;
  • a set of nozzles in the form of stars;
  • minus and Phillips screwdrivers;
  • pliers.

Preparatory activities

Selecting the desired window mode is a matter of minutes that every owner can do. However, the windows must first be prepared for use in the cold season. To do this, perform the following actions:

Sash clamp

Let's figure out how to transfer plastic windows to the winter position:

The eccentrics rotate 180 °: from the initial position by 90 ° to the right and to the left, which corresponds to the "winter-summer" mode.

Upper hinge

The adjustment of the hinges is resorted to in the case of a loose or uneven fit of the opening part of the window to the frame. So, in order to lean more against the upper corner of the sash with the ability to turn and tilt against the frame, you will need to tighten the screw on the scissors.

In case of sagging of the sash and touching the impost, by changing its position, you can get rid of the snagging. The screw itself is in the hinge, and to access it you will need to open a window.

Clockwise rotation of the key provides lifting of the lower opposite corner of the sash, in the opposite direction - its lowering. In the process of adjusting work, you need to ensure that the trunnions do not rest against the striker. If the desired result is not achieved, you will need to tighten the screw on the scissors, for which the sash is opened in such a way that it is held only by the lower hinge.

One of the plates has a bolt and a hex wrench. By turning it clockwise, they achieve greater pressure of the opening part of the window to the frame. Reverse rotation will loosen the adhesion of the corner to the frame.

Bottom hinge

The hinge has 2 adjustment screws at the bottom. One of them allows you to set the sash horizontally, i.e. raise or lower its upper opposite corner.

The second adjustment is at the top of the hinge. To get close to the adjusting element, you will need to open and fold the sash, and then dismantle the plastic pads. By tightening the screw, the sash can be lifted and, accordingly, vice versa.

If, during horizontal adjustment, it was not possible to get rid of the engagement of the lower corner of the sash with the profile, then by raising the opening part this problem can be eliminated.

Configuring windows from different manufacturers

Each brand that produces PVC windows has its own characteristics, and the adjustment is no exception:

Possible problems

When using PVC windows or carrying out adjustments, it may turn out that the fittings are not functioning properly. The reasons can be different, so some of them are worth dwelling on.

Loose handle

Most often, the handle begins to dangle due to the loosening of the fasteners. The nuance is eliminated by displacing the plastic cover and tightening the handle fasteners with a Phillips screwdriver. As a rule, this is enough for the fittings to fit snugly against the window.

Sticking handle

Such a malfunction has the following possible reasons:

Locked handle

If the handle is blocked, do not rush to change it. This is usually caused by a malfunctioning locking mechanism that prevents the leaf from changing state when it is open. You will need to turn the lever responsible for the lock so that the handle has free play.

Broken handle

If the handle is broken, then the only solution to the problem is to replace the part. This is done quite simply: just turn the cover and unscrew the fasteners from the two screws, and then remove the handle. Installing a new part is carried out in reverse order.

Checking the tightness of the window

After adjustment work, a sheet of paper is placed between the opening part and the frame and the sash is closed. Then they pull on the sheet, controlling its tension. If the paper comes out easily, by adjusting it is necessary to press the opening part towards the window.

You can also use a lighter. If the flame deviates from the vertical, it will indicate insufficient tightness.

The instructions contained in this article will help you find out what position the pivot is in and figure out how to switch the windows to winter mode without having to call the master at home. The text contains an overview of the features and characteristics of window fittings, advice on its use and correct adjustment, as well as visual videos and photos with a clear description of this procedure.

Reinforced-plastic insulating glass units are widely used for glazing apartments and private houses. Such designs have the ability to make adjustments and set the degree of sash pressing. Thanks to such adjustment of PVC windows, the system can be switched to winter or summer seasonal mode. This feature is very convenient, although not all owners know about it.

The availability of the adjustment function depends on the type of fittings used. This feature is not inherent in every type of window, but only in modern modifications. There are several modes. Each of them has its own characteristics.

Standard, summer and winter modes of plastic windows

The standard mode assumes the middle position of the sash pressing. This means that the eccentric will be located in the middle. Window construction installed in this mode, in most cases, is able to work effectively both in winter and in summer. This ensures the optimum pressure level of the sealing material.

In winter mode, the windows are characterized by a tighter fit of the sash to the frame. Due to this, in the cold season, metal-plastic structures effectively retain heat, keeping it indoors.

Summer mode is characterized by less tight sash fixation. In this position, air currents circulate freely between the environment and the room. In other words, the effect of micro-ventilation is provided, due to which optimal microclimatic conditions are maintained in the heat.

Note! The use of the summer mode allows the sash to be weakened as much as possible, which has a positive effect on the condition of the reinforced-plastic windows that have survived the long winter. At the same time, it remains possible to protect the room from dirt, dust and heat.

Why is it necessary to adjust plastic windows for summer and winter mode

The transition from one mode to another allows you to keep the window structure in a functional state and extend its service life. Adjustment involves changing the degree of fit of the sash to the window frame. In the winter season, the insulation material shrinks, and in the summer it expands. It, like all fasteners, can be protected from wear with the help of adjustments, video and photographic materials with instructions describing how this can be done, on the net enough.

Sometimes, during operation, the sash is displaced. When it is warm outside, this does not cause inconvenience, but in winter, this can cause the temperature in the room to drop significantly. If this happens, check the condition of the frame. During the installation of metal-plastic windows, the masters check the position of the sashes in each of the modes, as well as the absence of gaps between the parts. However, a perfectly executed installation is not a guarantee that the sashes will not disperse over time.

If the windows are installed in early spring or winter, the structures are exposed to external influences:

  1. The outside temperature rises.
  2. Under the influence of climate change, plastic begins to expand.
  3. The temperature outside is dropping.
  4. Under the influence of temperature changes, the plastic decreases in volume, while it is not always able to take its original shape.

Similar processes take place if windows are installed in the summer. But at first, the material shrinks as temperatures drop, and then expands. At the same time, it is impossible to avoid changes in the technical characteristics of the product, therefore, gaps often appear in the windows.

The need to transfer plastic windows to winter or summer mode may be due not only to seasonal transition, but also to a number of other reasons:

  1. Drafts from the window, carrying frosty air and dust in summer in winter.
  2. Sagging of the sashes due to wear on the hinges.
  3. Sash jammed in ventilation mode.

Note! During the operation of windows, the sealing material is subject to severe wear. Therefore, it is very important to timely adjust plastic windows with your own hands when switching to winter / summer modes.

How to check the possibility of adjusting plastic windows for the winter

The possibility of switching between summer and winter modes is provided by special fittings. The availability of this function depends on the class of these parts.

There are several types of components:

  1. Low-cost hardware - parts that have the lowest cost and are solely responsible for opening and closing the window structure.
  2. Standard fittings - the complete set contains standard and anti-burglary parts that allow you to prepare the window structure for summer or winter.
  3. Specialized fittings - includes burglar-proof and specialized parts that allow transferring plastic windows to winter or summer mode.

Most modern manufacturers produce standard and specialized fittings with the function of switching from one mode to another.

Most popular brands:

  • Siegenia Aubi;
  • Maco;
  • Roto.

During installation, the user is not always provided with detailed information about the functionality of the fittings. To find out if the transition between modes is provided in the window structure, you should study the appearance and markings of the equipment, namely, the trunnion.

An eccentric or trunnion is one of the elements of the fittings, which allows you to adjust the degree of pressure of the sash to the frame of a metal-plastic window. This part is placed on the side.

If the trunnion contains special holes for the key, then the design has an adjustment function. This can be easily seen even in the photo of plastic windows, of which there are many on the net. Typically, the markings are marked with a hexagon, screwdriver or asterisk. In some cases, the regulating part has an oval shape, which also indicates that the window can be operated in different modes.

How to determine which mode of plastic windows is set: winter or summer

Before adjusting plastic windows for the winter, you should establish in which position the fittings are installed. There are several ways to help you find out how the sash is positioned. In each case, the technique depends on the shape of the pivot.

How to determine the winter mode of plastic windows before setting up the fittings:

  1. A sheet of paper is taken.
  2. It is placed between the sash and the window frame so that one of the ends remains on the side of the room.
  3. The window closes.
  4. Then you should pull the sheet towards you.

If the paper passes easily, then the structure is set for operation in summer mode. Otherwise, it will tear.

Helpful advice! Manufacturers of metal-plastic structures advise to operate windows in summer mode all year round. If there is no reason for the transition to the winter position of the sash, this procedure is not necessary.

In addition, there is a way that allows you to visually determine whether the winter mode is set on plastic windows, photo examples showing the markings can be easily found on the Internet. According to this method, it is necessary to find a marking in the form of a dash, an asterisk or a dot on a round trunnion. Next, you should determine the direction of this mark. If the marking points towards the room, it means that the summer operation mode is set on the windows. If the mark looks towards the street, then the structure is set for winter mode.

Pins are not only round, but also oval. The operating mode in this case is determined by the nature of the eccentric placement. If it is turned vertically, then the windows are set for summer weather. In the horizontal position, the pin presses the sash against the frame as tightly as possible, which indicates the winter mode.

Having determined the position of the sash, you can proceed to solving the question of how to transfer the windows to winter mode, video instructions describing this procedure are presented on the network in large numbers.

How to adjust plastic windows in winter / summer modes: video review and description

To find out how plastic windows are regulated, it is advisable to read the manufacturer's instructions, study the descriptions and videos, which can later be used as a visual aid. If the work is carried out without the help of a specialist, it is very important to fully grasp the essence of the issue and act as carefully as possible, since there is a risk of ruining the fittings with a careless movement.

How to put windows in winter modeoperation: photoand a description of the preparatory stage

Preparing a window for customization begins with cleaning. To complete this procedure, you will need a certain set of tools and accessories.

This list includes:

  • a mop equipped with a telescopic handle;
  • means for cleaning window panes;

  • paper napkins or towels;
  • means for cleaning fittings;
  • silicone based lubricant;
  • brush or hard brush.

Helpful advice! If you constantly look after the double-glazed windows and keep them clean, before adjusting the plastic windows for the winter, you will not have to spend a lot of time preparing them.

The preparation of the window structure is as follows:

  • glass is washed out;
  • the frame is wiped;
  • dirt on joints and joints is removed;

  • the fittings are thoroughly cleaned with a brush or hard brush;
  • all window elements are wiped (especially areas with grease);
  • by applying a few drops of silicone grease, the fittings are processed;
  • the position of the journal is determined;
  • the trunnion is set to the required position;
  • grease is reapplied;
  • all hinges are lubricated.

After all the above manipulations have been completed, the result is checked using a sheet of paper.

How to put windows in winter mode: photoand recommendations

To adjust the fittings on the glass units, you will need a special tool. Experts recommend that you have with you:

  1. Pliers.
  2. A screwdriver.
  3. Hex wrench.

The necessary tool should be purchased immediately after purchasing the windows, as the need to configure them may arise suddenly. Sometimes the eccentrics do not protrude outward, and many owners search the network for videos on how to adjust plastic windows with similar features. The secret is to pull the trunnion outward. After that, it can already be configured. When the eccentrics are in the required position, they must be recessed into the sash again.

Experts do not recommend changing modes in the first year of windows operation. In new designs, the sealing material has not yet been subjected to wear, therefore, the mechanical loads on the fittings should not be increased or adjusted. If winter in the region does not differ in too low temperatures, it is allowed to operate double-glazed windows in summer mode. At the same time, the winter adjustment should not be left for the summer, since in such a mode, accelerated wear of the seal will occur.

Note! It is allowed to change the regime no more than 2 times a year. Moreover, the length of the winter operation period is much shorter than the summer one.

Setting up plastic windows: how to adjust the sashes horizontally and vertically

Regardless of the mode of operation, it is not allowed that the sashes of the structure are skewed. Sometimes you have to resort to correcting their position in order to correctly configure the fittings. Sagging or warping will shorten the life of the seal. To work, you need a pencil with a soft lead and a ruler. All manipulations with the window must be done very carefully, otherwise the plastic can be damaged.

Window preparation for sash adjustment:

  1. The structure is closing.
  2. The sash is traced with a pencil around the perimeter (marks are applied to the frame).
  3. The window opens.
  4. The distances are measured between the frame opening and the marked lines along the entire perimeter of the structure.

On all sides, the indicators should be the same. Slight deviation is allowed, but not more than 7 mm. If the level of the left edge is underestimated in relation to the right, or vice versa, you need to correct its position. To do this, you need to remove the decorative insert and tighten the screws that are installed at the bottom.

In some cases, it becomes necessary to raise the sash. For this, the upper screw is unscrewed by half. If the level of the sash placement is too high, the fasteners are tightened by ¼ a turn. If it is clearly underestimated, the bolt is unscrewed by ¼ a turn. The flaps are horizontally adjusted by screws located on the hinges.

How to adjust plastic windows horizontally:

  1. The window opens.
  2. A hole is located, the configuration of which corresponds to a hex wrench.
  3. The screw turns smoothly until the leaf is aligned to the desired position.
  4. Check in progress.

To check the quality of the setting, you should close the window structure. If it is necessary to reduce the distance between the hinge and the sash, the hex wrench must be turned clockwise. If the distance between these elements is too small, then the tool is rotated counterclockwise.

Important! Strong horizontal displacement of the window is not allowed. The maximum allowable figure is 3 mm (to either side).

Possible problems with reinforced-plastic windows and how to solve them

You can check the quality of the work done not only with a sheet of paper, but also by ear.

A well-adjusted window behaves as follows:

  • nothing interferes with the free opening of the doors, they close unhindered;
  • there is no creak, grinding and other extraneous sounds;
  • all the screws holding the sash in the desired position are screwed in approximately the same;
  • along the entire perimeter of the window, the sealing material has the same thickness and shape;
  • after opening / closing the sash, the sealing material returns to its original shape.

Changing the operating mode of a design is sometimes accompanied by problems. If the roller does not turn, it may need to be pulled out of the slot in the retainer by rotating it 90 °. If that doesn't work, the part should be lubricated with WD-40. This lubricant is in the form of an aerosol mixture in a can. It is designed for processing joints and threads.

If, when switching to winter mode, the drafts from the window do not disappear, then the service life of the seal has expired. Replacing this material is very easy. It is enough to remove the old seal from the frame and the grooves of the sash and insert a new one in its place (by hand or using a blunt trowel). Since the material is welded to the profile in the corners, you will have to cut it to remove it.

The information contained in this article clearly explains how to put windows on winter mode. Videos, photographs and detailed descriptions of the procedure allow you to fully understand the peculiarities of adjusting double-glazed windows. Using this data, you can quickly and easily provide warmth and comfort in your own home when it is cold outside.

On the one hand, such manipulations promise advantages, reducing heat loss through the window structure, and on the other hand, as a result of adjustment, the seal wears out quickly.

How to transfer plastic windows to winter mode: video-instruction

Fittings for plastic windows allow you to adjust their tight closing and, if necessary, adjust them depending on the season. However, sometimes even high-quality expensive fittings require repair. In this article we will tell you how the adjustment of plastic windows is done and how you can fix minor breakdowns of mechanisms on your own. To do this, it is enough to know the position and operation of the main tuning units and have the necessary tool.

Depending on the current problem and the manufacturer of the fittings, for the repair you will need:

  • hexagon 4 mm (almost every cyclist has in the set);
  • a screwdriver with nozzles marking T, TX (in the form of a star), as well as the usual Phillips No. 3-4;
  • pliers;
  • aerosol WD-40.

Adjustment points

Consider the popular situations when it is required to adjust PVC windows and fittings for winter and summer, and also tell you how to eliminate minor malfunctions. Only the general technology will be described, some of the nuances may vary depending on the manufacturer. In any case, this can be found in the instructions.

Repair of window and balcony handles

Looseness of the doorknob

To fix a dangling doorknob, you need to tighten its mount. This is the simplest adjustment of a plastic window; an overlay is provided on the bottom of each handle to access the adjustment mechanism. It is pulled towards itself and the entire element is rotated perpendicularly. So you can see two bolts that are tightened with a regular Phillips screwdriver. If you cannot remove the decorative attachment with your hands, be careful: it is made of soft plastic, it is easy to damage it with a sharp object.

Installing or replacing a handle with a lock

If you have children, it is important to protect them from falling out of the window. It is for this that special handles with a lock were invented, which will not allow the child to open the window on their own.

To remove the old handle, first remove the decorative attachment, as in the previous version. Unscrew two bolts and pull out the handle with light swaying. Then insert a new one in the same position and fix it on the bolts. Replacing a window handle will take literally one minute, the process is shown in the video.

The handle sticks or does not reach the desired position

This problem occurs for various reasons. Cleaning and lubricating all hardware and handles may come in handy here. If the handle closes with great effort, it is most likely that the adjustment of the pressure of the sash of plastic windows will help.

To lubricate the mechanism, pull out the handle, clean and vacuum it and the mounting hole. Then it remains to lubricate the moving parts with a lubricant of a liquid consistency, for example, oil for sewing machines. In the presence of corrosion, the surfaces are treated with WD 40 aerosol.

Information on how to adjust the fittings of plastic windows to reduce the pressure of the sashes is presented in a separate section below.

If the handle is jammed

If it happened so that the handle is jammed, you cannot forcibly close it by breaking it out with giblets. Most likely, the locking mechanism worked incorrectly, which does not allow changing the position of the window during the open state. To solve this problem, the blocker lever, located at the end of the sash next to the handle, is manually retracted. The blocker can be of two designs:

  1. a plate in the form of a tongue fixed to the end, which, when the window is opened, changes its position and becomes at an angle relative to the seal;
  2. a clip that, when opened, enters the seal.

Window sash adjustment in winter and summer

It is very simple to check the frame clamp: we take a sheet of paper and press it with a flap. If the sheet is easy to pull out, it means that the pressure is poor, mandatory adjustment is required. If the sheet is pulled out with difficulty, or even breaks, then the setting is correct.

Over time, the gum is no longer as bulky as it used to be, and a gap may form in the window. However, more often this gap appears during seasonal fluctuations, with sharp changes in temperature. To correct this problem, it is often not necessary to change the seal. Adjustment of the sashes of plastic windows is made by twisting specially provided mechanisms.

Setting up plastic windows for winter and summer is especially important if there are large temperature jumps in your area. This allows to reduce the internal stress of the structure and fittings and to increase the service life of the rubber seal.

    • At the end of the sash, in the slots of the metal plugs, there are oval cylinders called a pivot (eccentric). There are grooves on the frame, into which the hooks go when the handle is turned in order to tightly press the sash. Their adjustment can be done by changing the position of the eccentrics or hooks.

    • The photo shows an example of adjusting plastic windows, which are easy to do on your own without calling the wizard. As you can see, to increase the pressure, you need to rotate the trunnion 90 °. Depending on the manufacturer of the hardware, it can be turned either manually or with a screwdriver / pliers. Please note that the pins (which are located in the photo on the right) do not rotate around their axis, but along a small radius.
    • If it is not possible to adjust the eccentrics, twist the counter hooks on the frame, usually a hex wrench is required for this. It is also possible to put a plate under the "branch" if the trunnions do not reach it.
    • When the clamping of the frame at the handle is weakened or increased, you can proceed to setting the clamping on the side of the canopies. To do this, remove the plastic plug from the lower canopy.
    • Inside, you can find two hex bolts and one hidden one, with which they adjust the position of the frame flaps. The downforce is controlled by a bolt that is perpendicular to the window. Setting is best done with the window closed. Turning it clockwise will increase the clamping of the sash, and counterclockwise will weaken it.
    • The upper part of the sash is attached in a different way, to a special mechanism called "scissors". To gain access to the upper part, the window is opened and at the end of the sash, the locking mechanism is pressed (it is fixed at an angle to the rubber gasket and is springy).
    • When the blocker is pressed, the knob is turned to the ventilation mode. The sash will be removed from the upper hinge and will hang only on the "scissors" above and on the lower canopy. This gives access to the head, the adjustment of which will change the clamping of the frame.

If the edge of the sash hits the frame

When the window was open for a long time or it was suddenly opened / closed, the retaining mechanisms may loosen or deform. If there are no serious defects, then tightening the loops should help.

    • To change the position of the sash, use a hexagon to tighten the bolts on the lower canopy and on the “scissors” system from above. Remove the protective plastic cap from the lower hinge, and in the upper part of it you can find a hexagon bolt. To lower the sash, twist it counterclockwise, and to raise it, clockwise.
    • On massive metal-plastic windows and doors, there are sometimes additional closers that slightly raise the sash before closing. If there is such a mechanism, then it will also need to be slightly corrected.
    • If the sash touches the frame not from above or from below, but from the sides, another mechanism is adjusted for this. At the bottom of the canopy, a bolt is found parallel to the window. For easy access to it, there are two exits with key heads (from the side of the slope and sash).

  • If the slope is too close and does not allow access to the bolt, the sash is opened and the second method is resorted to. If you twist it clockwise, the sash will move to the right, and counterclockwise - to the left.
  • Tuning from above is done a little differently. To do this, the sash is completely opened, on the side of the mechanism, a slightly recessed head of the tuning bolt is found. By changing its position, you can adjust the position of the flaps left-right at the top.

If the plastic windows are broken, it is quite easy to do the repair yourself without calling the master. The main problems with the position and clamping of the sashes, loosening of the mechanisms are solved literally in a minute with the help of a simple adjustment of the fittings.

You have modern plastic windows installed in your apartment or in a country house, which have served reliably for a long time. And suddenly minor malfunctions began to appear: they noticed that the sash did not close completely, and a draft and extraneous noise appeared in the room; the handle became blocked and did not turn. All these minor troubles can be easily eliminated. The main thing is to understand the scheme and technique for adjusting PVC windows, individual parts and fittings, and the window will function correctly again. Before troubleshooting a plastic window, it is necessary to study the step-by-step work, as well as prepare a mandatory set of tools, without which the task will not work. Just prepare the windows for the coming winter.

PVC Window Adjustment Tools

To adjust the window mechanism, you need to acquire the following tools:

  • hex wrench;
  • a set of nozzles for a screwdriver (of the "asterisk" type);
  • Phillips screwdriver and regular flat screwdriver;
  • pliers.

It is better to use automobile oil or special aerosol as a lubricant.

You will find out what kind of window fittings are for plastic windows.

Many window adjustments are done with a hexagon. A set of screwdriver nozzles can be useful if, in the production of a window frame, mechanisms were used that have bolts with a certain top for an asterisk-type nozzle.

Basic areas for adjusting plastic windows for the winter

Compared to a sliding window mechanism, the adjustment of swing leaves in plastic windows is a more laborious process. You need to know the main setup points, of which there are five. By adjusting them, you can raise or lower the sash, adjust it horizontally to the left or right, adjust one of the corners located in the lower part of the sash horizontally. There are also two more adjustment areas, the adjustment of which allows you to reduce or increase the density of the sash against the frame.

Adjustment of window and balcony handles

It so happens that the window or balcony handle is loose, so the sash began to close loosely. To eliminate this malfunction, it is necessary to tighten the fastening mechanism of the handle itself. To do this, remove the rectangular trim under the handle. She calmly rises and turns to the side 90˚. Under it are the bolts, which must be tightened with a Phillips screwdriver. The cover can be removed easily, without much effort and poking with a screwdriver, which can only damage the profile and damage the edges of the lining.

How to Repair a Sticky Rotary Knob

Such a malfunction is more significant, with several reasons:

  1. The mechanism may need cleaning and lubrication.
  2. If the handle does not turn completely to the set position, or turns, but with great difficulty, it may be necessary to just slightly loosen the clamp on the sash itself.

Handle adjustment in case of poor pressure.

About what fittings for plastic windows is better, it is described.

Two options for solving the problem:

  1. To clean and lubricate the entire mechanism, it is necessary to dismantle the handle. Cleaning can be done with a vacuum cleaner or a special brush. After cleaning, the mechanism must be lubricated.
  2. To reduce the pressing action, the eccentrics, which are located at the ends of the sashes on the side where the handles are located, are subject to adjustment. In addition, it is necessary to adjust the bolts located on the hinges on the opposite side.

Adjusting the handle that is blocked

When the window handle is locked, it makes no sense to replace it with a new one. In this case, you don't even need to dismantle it completely. The occurrence of a malfunction is associated with improper operation of the locking mechanism. At the same time, he does not allow the sash to change its state when it is open. To do this, turn the locking lever to give the handle an unobstructed movement.

There are two ways to eliminate this problem. depending on the type of construction of the window mechanism and fittings. In one embodiment, the locking lever can be in the form of a tongue, located at an angle to the seal and screwed to the end of the sash when the window is open. Alternatively, the lever can be in the form of a clamp that fits over the seal and serves as a gasket.

Broken window handle

If the handle breaks, the window cannot be closed. Such a case of repair can be done by yourself. To do this, you need to purchase a new handle either in a hardware store, or order from the organization from which the plastic windows were ordered. Then proceed directly to the replacement work.

To do this, it is necessary to dismantle the decorative strip that covers the attachment of the handle to the frame. It turns freely in any direction. Then you need to unscrew the bolts with which the old handle is held. The new handle is screwed onto the same bolts.

Quite often, adults install PVC windows, which have safety handles. This is due to the need to protect children from self-opening windows. This mechanism prevents the window from opening.

You will find detailed information about glass railings for stairs.

If the fuse is broken, it is necessary to turn the knob 90˚ together with the plug. Then two bolts are unscrewed. Then the old handle is taken out of the sash (by the method of gradual loosening). In place of the old one, a new one is placed, in the same position at the time of its removal, and bolted.

Correction of a PVC window "winter-summer"

Window adjustment for the winter provides for a high level of pressure, and for the summer - a low level.

Some regulation rules:

  1. If there is a need to adjust the level of pressing the sash to the frame from the side of the hinges, then for this it is necessary to use the adjusting screw, which is located on the lower hinge.
  2. If the sash has a swing-out mechanism, then an additional adjustment of the sash pressure from the side of the upper hinge should be performed.
  3. To access the adjusting bolt, which is located on the upper hinge section, you must first open the sash, and then turn the handle to the ventilation position. Before doing this, push the locking lever.
  4. If you turn the blocker to the right, then it is pressed against the frame, in the opposite direction the pressure is weakened.

The adjustment of some types of fittings is carried out using special parts located on the frame from the side of the handle. Their position can be corrected with a hex key. For a more weighty hold-down, it moves closer to the outside. If there are hold-down mechanisms on the hinge side of the frame, they can also be adjusted with a hex wrench. In this case, if the tongue is pushed more strongly, then the sash will have a greater pressure on the frame.

Adjustment of the pressure mechanism: due to cracks or according to the season

The clamping device is presented in the form of a sealing gum, which can also fail over time. The reason for this is: shrinkage and loss of elasticity of the elastic. When installing a new window, the sash fits snugly against the seal, and when the level of pressing force decreases, the tightness breaks down, which becomes insufficient for a snug fit.

The manufacturer of window fittings has foreseen this situation, so the PVC window has a mechanism that allows you to change the pressure when the sash is closed. The clamp can be increased or decreased depending on the needs or the season.

In practice, the following situation arises when in the summer the rubber seal tends to expand, since it has the highest level of elasticity. In winter, the opposite situation occurs, the elastic begins to shrink at low temperatures. That is why, in winter, it is necessary to increase the pressure so that the cold wind does not blow through the sealing joint.

If you forget to adjust the winter version of the clamping of plastic windows for higher summer temperatures, then the gasket will be deformed by the window sash. This can lead to breakage of the sash. To avoid such a situation, it is necessary to adjust the pressure from winter to summer and vice versa before each season.

Clamping mechanism adjustment diagram

To adjust the sash clamping mechanism, there are eccentrics for this. These are special mechanisms - pins that allow the sash to be firmly fixed when closed. The clamp is adjusted by these pins.

As the downforce increases, the trunnions must be turned to the right. It should be remembered that with full rotation, the eccentric returns to its original place. When the pressure is reduced, the trunnions turn to the left. The above scheme is applicable only for those leaves that open from left to right. When opening in the other direction, it is necessary to rotate the pins to the right to decrease the pressure, and to the left to increase it.

What is a magnetic seal for metal doors is indicated.

Manufacturers offer several options for adjusting these mechanisms. There are three such ways:

  1. The pivot is rotated using a flat screwdriver. To do this, it is inserted into a groove located on the eccentric.
  2. The trunnion is clamped with pliers and pulled towards itself, then rotated.
  3. The trunnion is clamped with pliers and rotates in the required direction without pulling in its direction.

When using pliers to grip the trunnions, do not use too much force to turn the eccentrics. Initially, you need to make sure which of the options will be used to adjust the clamping mechanism. Otherwise, it may be damaged.

Do not be afraid of such a problem, the main thing is to start adjusting the window sashes on time.

In practice, there are three common ways to adjust the position of the sash:

  1. When the sash starts to cling to the bottom of the frame along the edge of the handle with its bottom section. To fix this problem, it is necessary to move the sash up and move its upper section in the direction of the support.
  2. When the sash touches the center post of the frame. To do this, you need to move it towards the awnings. When the contact area is located closer to the upper or lower part, it is necessary to bring the sash closer to the corresponding support.
  3. When the sash catches the upper frame opening. For this, the lower part of the sash is moved towards the support. If such adjustment is insufficient, the entire sash moves down.

All adjustment actions are carried out using a hex wrench. To move the sash to the upper or lower part, it is necessary to turn the adjusting bolt, which is located in the lower support. To get to it, you need to remove the decorative plastic panel from the frame. On the upper edge of this section there is a hole that you need to get into with a key. The sash is raised when the adjusting screw rotates to the right, lowering occurs when it is turned to the left.

At the bottom on the same support there is another adjusting screw. Access to it is possible from both sides of the sash. When this screw rotates, the sash approaches or moves away from the support. The adjustment is carried out as follows: the key is turned half a turn and the presence of a gap between the frame and the sash is checked. If the bolt is not turned enough, it should be continued to twist on the sly until the contact is eliminated.

The adjustment of the upper section ("scissors") is carried out in the same way. To get to the bolt with which the sash moves to the sides, you need to open the window wide open. In this position of the swing-out mechanism, the opening for the adjusting key will be visible.

All the described schemes for adjusting plastic windows are not difficult to get rid of faults with your own hands.

Modern fittings for plastic windows provide for the possibility of adjusting the sash pressure. The operating mode is determined by the clamping force. There are three modes in total: weak (summer), strong (winter) and medium (standard). They must be used wisely, taking into account the current state of the structure and the level of comfort in the room. If it becomes necessary to switch the flaps to winter mode, you should determine the type of eccentrics and study the instructions below for adjusting them.

Changing the mode on PVC windows: unnecessary or necessary

By default, the wizard who mounts the windows sets the mode at his discretion, he can be guided by the season or his own experience. Therefore, during installation, it is advisable to find out what clamping force will be installed.

The mode directly affects the rate of wear of the structure:

  • At summer the sealing rubber is not under pressure. The sash fits without a gap, but does not squeeze the seal. This mode is most preferable, since the rubber service life is maximal with it. Plastic structures expand and contract freely when the temperature outside the window changes, which puts less stress on the welds.
  • Standard the operating mode already slightly squeezes the seal. It perfectly protects against dust, noise and drafts. It can be used all year round, but the rubber wear rate will be higher.
  • At winter In mode, the sash fits as tightly as possible, the seal is squeezed, you can feel this by the tight turn of the handle. With constant use of this mode, the rubber wears out over several seasons, it loses its shape and is no longer able to recover. When switching to summer mode after prolonged use of winter mode, blowing is possible.

The ideal operating mode for PVC windows is summer. If there is no discomfort for the residents, the windows provide good insulation from cold air, dust and street noise, then it can be used constantly.

The transfer of the flaps to a strong clamp is necessary in the following cases:

  • There is a blowing, cold air is felt along the perimeter of the sash.
  • The seal is worn out, has lost its elasticity or has shrunk.
  • With heat losses, in order to save on space heating.

Not all types of fittings are equipped with a mechanism for switching the mode, as a rule, the cheapest options do not have such an opportunity. Kits from the middle and expensive segment are most often equipped with movable pins (eccentrics), changing the position of which, you can adjust the clamping force. These are fittings of the brands Roto, Maco, Siegenia Aubi.

Rules for using the modes:

  • The period of use of the sash in the winter mode should be shorter than the summer one. It is recommended to switch the mechanism to a tighter fit in late autumn, return to its original position in early spring.
  • For the first year or two after installation, it is advisable to use only the summer mode. There is no need to translate into winter.
  • You cannot use a strong clamp in the warm season - this can lead to serious damage to the fittings and an increased load on the sash welds, since the structure expands when heated.

To determine that the sash does not adhere poorly to the frame and you need to switch the clamp to a tighter one, a simple way will help: you need to clamp the edge of the notebook sheet between the sash and the frame and turn the handle to the "closed" position, then try to remove the paper. If the sheet comes loose easily, the fit is loose. If it is pulled out with difficulty or is torn, then the clamp is sufficient for the winter season and there is no need to tighten the pins.

What the trunnions look like and where are they located

Pins or eccentrics are part of the hardware locking mechanism. They are located on the handle side of the sash. They are easy to spot when you open the window. By changing the position of the eccentrics, you can adjust the clamping force. Window sashes of standard size are equipped with 3 pins: bottom, center and top. There may be more of them depending on the size of the sash.

Eccentrics differ in shape, which determines how they are adjusted:

● Some circular eccentrics are off-centered, with multiple points or one line running across the entire pivot. In this case, the largest point or the longer part of the risk serves as a reference point. If these marks are directed closer to the room, then the mode is winter, closer to the street - summer. You can also focus on the center of the eccentric, the closer it is to the street, the stronger the vestibule.

Which tool to use in order to transfer plastic windows to winter mode or return to summer mode also depends on the shape of the eccentrics. If they have holes, use the appropriate tool (hex, sprocket or screwdriver). The position of the pins without special holes (oval) is corrected with pliers.

How to translate eccentrics to strong pressure with your own hands

Mode switching is a simple operation. You can cope with it yourself without involving a master. Before adjusting the eccentrics, it is necessary to prepare plastic windows for winter operation. This is the usual procedure for servicing plastic profile products:

  • Clean the frame surface from dust and debris.
  • Wipe all metal parts of the fittings with a dry and soft cloth.
  • Apply special grease or industrial petroleum jelly to the moving parts of the hardware mechanism.
  • Open and close the sash several times to distribute the grease evenly.
  • Remove excess composition with a dry cloth.

It is better to clean and lubricate the fittings before adjusting, since debris and sand can accumulate on it; during movements, the protective coating on the metal will be damaged by abrasive particles, which will lead to corrosion.

Instructions for adjusting windows for the winter:

  1. Find all the eccentrics on the open sash. You need to translate everything at once. Some models of fittings are equipped with recessed pins, which must be pulled towards you before starting work.
  2. Find the mark on the trunnion indicating the downforce. The closer the mark is to the street side, the stronger the fit. For trunnions with an offset center, a different rule applies - the closer the center is to the street, the denser the bridging.
  3. Using a window wrench, an asterisk or pliers, turn the eccentric: oval to a horizontal position; round - with a risk (dot) towards the street; round with an off-center - wide side into the room.
  4. Eccentrics do not have an extreme point, they scroll around their axis. The maximum rotation when switching from summer to winter mode is 180 °. From standard to winter or summer - 90 °.
  5. You can check the result using a piece of paper.

In the spring, it is necessary to return the sash to its original position.

If the sash does not adhere well to the frame from the hinge side or sagging is found, you will need to adjust the hinges and scissors using a hex wrench. To do this, you need to remove the decorative plugs, find the holes on the hinges for the entry of the hex key and align the position of the sash vertically and horizontally. If the fittings provide for pressure adjustment from the hinge side, you can make the fit tighter around the entire perimeter. The clamp is adjustable on the bottom hinge or scissors.

The ability to adjust the clamping force is a useful feature of the fittings. This allows you to reduce heat loss in winter and extend the service life of sealing rubber and plastic by weakening the pressure in the warm season. But in order for the windows to serve as long as possible, you should not abuse this function.
