Design

On the front of the phone is a 5.99-inch screen with thin bezels around the edges, a minimal "forehead" on top and a "chin" on the bottom. The body is built on a black anodized aluminum frame. At the top you can see a small cutout for the earpiece and a front camera eye next to it.

The back side of the phone looks very original and is made in the best traditions of gaming laptops. The lid rises steadily from the edges towards the center in the shape of a triangular prism. It goes along the "back" of the device and reaches the scanner, made in the form of an oblong hexagon. A little higher above it is a single camera module, covered with protective glass, also in a hexagonal shape.

Also behind are four multimedia speakers, highlighted in red. There is a USB-C port on the bottom of the phone, while the headphone jack is on the top. The power button is on the right, just below the volume rocker. Above both of them is the "GameBoost" button.

What can be said about the appearance of the device? It is too specific, but attractive, although few people would take such a phone for everyday use. However, gamers should appreciate the efforts of the company.

Cooling system

Unfortunately, in this aspect, we do not understand everything. ZTE did not officially give information about the exact cooling principle they applied, and did not show photos of the board and case so that we could draw any conclusions. It is only known that the cooling complex operates on the principle of convection. That is, natural air flows are used, which must move in the case through the holes in it. But is there any kind of radiator there - it's hard to say, for this you need to disassemble the device.

The prismatic back also helps dissipate heat from the phone's components, creating a large surface area for heat to escape. According to the developers, the peak temperature of their product is 10 degrees less than that of the iPhone X.

One way or another, it will not be active cooling, so one should not expect an excessive drop in temperature, although such a cooling system is much better than its absence.

Display

The ZTE Nubia Red Magic has a 5.99-inch IPS LCD with a resolution of 2160 × 1080. Please note that it does not operate at 120 Hz, like Xiaomi's Black Shark.

The display occupies 78.5% of the front of the device. It is important that the brightness is enough to play in any conditions. The same goes for the viewing angles, they are excellent, so if you deviate the smartphone at an angle, you will continue to enjoy a beautiful picture.

Sound

The four-speaker set uses intelligent volume amplification technology and relies on the built-in DAC to create a 360-degree soundstage. The sound is very powerful, and the speakers are difficult to close with your fingers during the game, so that the volume and stereo effect will be constantly present.

Fortunately, they left the audio jack. A gaming smartphone should have it, at least, because it allows you to connect cool wired “ears” and at the same time charge the device. In headphones, the sound is decent, this is clearly not an audiophile solution, but for most it will be enough.

Software

The international model ZTE Nubia Red Magic Gaming Phone will ship with Android 8.1 Oreo without the manufacturer's skin preinstalled. People like this particular system, as it is not overloaded with third-party software, services and "buns", so it works perfectly.

China will receive a version of Red Magic with "Red Magic OS" firmware without Google apps. It is currently unknown what Red Magic OS consists of and what its main features are.

Camera

Red Magic has one 24-megapixel module on the back and 8-megapixel on the front. Its aperture is quite large - f / 1.7, there is digital stabilization technology. To compare the photos taken on this gadget with others does not work yet. But it is unlikely that he will be very pleased with this parameter. We hope for just a good camera. The phone records videos in 4K at 30 frames per second, as well as slow motion video at 120 FPS and 720p resolution.

Performance

The processor is, perhaps, one of the characteristics where Red Magic Phone unpleasantly surprised. It uses last year's top SoC, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. While it's still powerful, we all believed we'd see a Snapdragon 845 gaming machine. It's weird... A device that's marketed as a gaming device comes with a slightly outdated chip. In turn, ZTE says it preferred the more stable Snapdragon 835, which features a perfect balance between power consumption, power and temperature. They also claim that they have adapted the Snapdragon 835 to reduce power consumption by 40 percent.

Recall that this single-chip system consists of the cores of the previous generation (Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A73), modified by Qualcomm specialists and renamed Kryo. There are eight of them (4 × 2.1 GHz + 4 × 2.45 GHz). Note that Nubia factory overclocked this processor by increasing the clock frequency of the small cluster by 250 MHz, and the large one by 100 MHz. In AnTuTu, it scores very high rates and bypasses 96% of all other devices in terms of speed. So far, its performance will be enough for one or two years to run all 3D applications at maximum image settings, and throttling will not be felt due to processor cooling.

The phone received 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of built-in. MicroSD card is not supported. So much memory you have enough for anything, multitasking will be at the highest level.

The Red Magic phone is available through an Indiegogo campaign that began on April 26, 2018 and raised the required $50,000 in four days. Those who supported the manufacturers will be able to buy the device for $399, which is 24% less than the retail price set at $529. For $400 they can also be taken under the testing program.

According to the campaign, the release date in China will happen in May, while the standard Android-powered models will only hit stores in June.

Attention! Most recently, ZTE Corporation was banned from buying any technology from the US. In this regard, it is not known what will happen with the release of Red Magic, as they are built on the basis of American Snapdragon processors.
