Sections of the article:

In most houses and apartments, the size of the opening is the standard established in Soviet times, which regulates the width and height of the passage under the front door. However, in those days, door structures were made mainly of wood and did not have such a wide variety of models. Currently, door manufacturers also adhere to certain conditions for the ratio of height and width of products. However, the principles of sizing now depend on many not only design, but also aesthetic factors.

It is important to remember that entrance doors include not only products installed at the entrance to an apartment or private house. Entrance doors are also considered entrance doors.

Dimensions of wooden entrance doors in accordance with GOST

A wooden entrance door can have various opening sizes. These values depend on many factors. So, in the presence of cladding or glazing, the right-side and left-side entrance doors have an average size of 90 cm wide and 210 cm high. The factors that determine the dimensions of the openings include:

  • Dimensional grid of the inner frame;
  • Number of shutters;
  • The size of the threshold strip.

The protective strips required for installation have dimensions that also depend on the material of manufacture. Wooden products have a thickness of 1.6 - 1.9 cm, chipboard - 0.3 cm, and plastic ones do not exceed 0.2 cm.

Dimensions of metal entrance doors in accordance with GOST

The standard parameters of a metal door include dimensions of 203 cm in height in relation to 90 cm in width. When calculating the dimensions of doorways, you should take into account the presence of a framing edging around the perimeter of the entrance. In old buildings, it is made of wood and must be removed when replacing the structure. In new houses, in most cases, such edging is made of metal and it is extremely difficult to remove it. Therefore, most often the width of such a passage is considered taking into account this element.

In addition, quite often to expand functionality, the width of the doorway can be significantly increased. Door structures with two leaves are installed in the enlarged opening.

Metric and English measurement systems

Since the market of entrance structures currently offers products not only from domestic, but also from foreign manufacturers, there are various calculation systems in use. In the process of selecting a product, it is important to take into account the measuring system used by the manufacturer.

In the metric system, the standard parameters for products look like this:

  • Simple metal doors have dimensions: 2.04 m high and 0.826 m wide;
  • Reinforced metal door - 2.05 m with a width of 0.86 m;
  • The double-leaf door measures 2.419 m in height and 1.910 m in width.

Most foreign manufacturing plants manufacture and label products based on the English measurement system. The standard products are not very large and are available in 6 feet and 8 inches, which translates to 2032 mm. The width of the products is 2 feet 9 inches, which is 840 mm in the metric system.

The ratio of the sizes of doors and openings

When calculating the dimensions for the selection of a suitable door structure, the opening for the entrance door is measured at several points and the smallest value is selected. Recommended door sizes for various openings:

  • The passage of 208 * 88 cm is designed for the installation of a canvas with dimensions of 205 * 85 cm;
  • With openings of 210 * 92 cm, the optimal dimensions of the door leaf are 207 * 89 cm;
  • For an entrance passage of 210 * 100 cm, metal doors with dimensions of 207 * 97 cm are intended;
  • The extended passage of 210 * 127 cm is great for a two-leaf door structure of 207 * 120 cm.

When using canvases of a reinforced type, the ratio of dimensions will be somewhat different. So, a product with dimensions of 2.05 * 0.865 m assumes installation in a structure passage with parameters of 2.08 * 0.9 m.When installing a structure with dimensions of 2.07 * 0.905 m, a door passage with parameters 2.1 * 0 is needed , 94 m. The product with a height of 2.07 * 0.985 m fits the passageway 2.1 * 1.02 m.

Dimensional ratios can vary significantly when installing a door structure with thick natural wood sheathing.

Standard dimensions for apartment buildings

When installing an entrance metal door into the passage, it is very important to comply with all the requirements and regulations of the law. Only in this case, the door will correspond to the declared characteristics of the manufacturer. According to building codes, the dimensions depend on the dimensions of the landing, as well as the materials from which the walls are made.

In new buildings, the opening for the entrance metal door has permissible dimensions from 1950 to 1980 mm. Moreover, its width is quite small and ranges from 740 to 760 mm.

In brick houses with a large number of apartments, the openings are large. So, the height of structures ranges from 2050 to 2100 mm. The width is from 880 to 920 mm.

In apartment buildings of the old type, the doorways are designed mainly for single-leaf metal structures, but they have the largest dimensions. So, the nominal height is from 2040 to 2600 mm. At the same time, the width ranges from 830 to 960 mm. Nine-storey residential buildings from the period of construction after 1970 have standard entrance openings with dimensions up to 2550 mm in height and 1250 mm in width.

It is worth noting that redevelopment of existing doorways in multi-storey buildings is unacceptable without obtaining special permission from the architectural commission. Such strict rules are based on the engineering features of houses and walls, as well as fire safety standards. In addition, when calculating the norms for each house, the estimated loads on the walls were taken into account. Therefore, their non-observance and unauthorized redevelopment can lead to the formation of cracks in the walls of apartments. At the same time, in private houses, any dimensions of entrance doorways and their redevelopment are allowed. However, in this case, it is advisable to comply with the minimum evacuation requirements.

Benefits of using standards

Currently, most of the metal entrance door manufacturers have a wide range of products with a size range that is as close as possible to the standard dimensions of openings. However, there are many more decorative options for classic standard models than for custom-made products.

Standard doors have a significantly lower cost compared to custom-made products, despite the same equipment of the structures. In addition, the installation process is simpler and does not require significant costs for adjusting the clearances. Also, a significant advantage is the saving of time during the installation process.

Applicable standards

Currently, each of the entrance doorways, according to clause 6.9 of the normative document SNiP 210197, is an object related to emergency exits. Therefore, one of the main requirements is to ensure free and fast movement in the event of an emergency evacuation. For these purposes, the door structure, located as an entrance, must comply with the minimum permissible dimensions.

Thus, it is regulated that the minimum height must exceed the mark of 1900 mm. And the width of the doorway for residential premises cannot be less than 800 mm. At the same time, the dimensions of doors for office and other public premises have a minimum value of 1900 * 1200 mm.

Ceremonial metal structures of apartments in multi-storey buildings in their dimensions must match or exceed the width of the flight of stairs. These requirements are contained in the SNiP document under clause 6.29. Such design solutions, based on calculations, allow ensuring safety and evacuation measures for all residents of an apartment building.

In addition, compliance with the standards will allow the delivery of large pieces of furniture and large household appliances without hindrance.

Regardless of the purpose of the structure, to enter it and for communication between rooms, doors and doorways necessary for their installation are needed. Russian baths are no exception. And it is unlikely that in the near future humanity will come up with another way to enter, take hygienic procedures and not lose beneficial warmth with repeated movements. The configuration and size of the doorway by the owners can be chosen arbitrarily. However, the high cost of custom-made doors with non-standard dimensions convinces you to buy ready-made designs. This means that the size of the opening in the bathhouse under construction must correspond to the product chosen for the arrangement, so that they do not have to be subsequently adjusted to each other.

Video about installing a door block in a log house

Doors and Openings Standards

In favor of the purchase of door blocks made at the factory, not only the outstanding price, whose voice will go from a soft whisper to a heart-rending scream when purchasing accessories, seals and accessories, is expressively "spoken".

  • Factory door blocks are fully assembled and prepared for installation. The owners of the baths can only install them in accordance with the attached instructions.
  • Factory-made door frames and leaves, selected with an orientation to the operating conditions, will not deform under conditions of intense steam generation.
  • Warranties are provided, low-quality products can be changed without problems.

In case of replacement during the next repair, the standard size of the doorway will provide an opportunity to quickly find and buy a similar product. And the installation itself will not require any superhuman efforts, or special skill, or experience.

Differences between foreign and domestic doors

Bathhouse owners are now given the opportunity to equip buildings with products of Russian, Belarusian or Ukrainian manufacturers, or buy a door structure produced at a Spanish, Italian or French factory.

They regulate the dimensions of the doors and the corresponding dimensions of doorways GOST number 6629-88, SNiPs and DINs with numbers from 18100 to 18102. The difference in the values of the width, height of doors and openings is insignificant, since all standards are focused on the average physiological parameters of users, but about taking into account the specifics of the manufacturing country, one should not forget when calculating the opening:

  • The height of the door leaf usually varies around the height of two meters. It is 2000 mm ± 100 or 150 mm.
  • The width of the leaf of a factory single-leaf door of domestic production is from 600 to 900 mm. Foreign manufacturers in this parameter are in solidarity with ours. Only the French produce canvases with a width of 1 cm less (89 cm, 79 cm, etc.).

The thickness of the door structures produced in the CIS is designed for the traditional wall thickness of 75 cm. To increase and decrease it, special schemes have been developed. If they are not provided by the manufacturer, you will need to purchase and install an additional bar.

Please note that the maximum thickness of the factory door block is 128 mm. If there is no money and the desire to install an additional extension on excessively "thick" walls, you can cash the opening only from the front side, and make a slope from the back or install a self-adhesive strip.

In principle, the thickness does not affect the choice of the door and the calculation of the opening for it. The basic indicators of height and width are important, the so-called door clearance, starting from which the required values are calculated.

How to choose the width of the doorway

If there are no well-fed people in the owner's family or among his acquaintances, you should not get carried away with wide bath doors. After all, they will not retain heat in the same way as walls:

  • The width of the door opening of the entrance door preferred by the owners of country baths is on average 80 cm. It is possible and more, taking into account the need to bring in and change bath furniture and equipment.
  • For the arrangement of internal partitions, doors with a width of 70 and even 60 cm are sufficient.
  • In the steam room, bathroom and shower, if any, it is better to install doors with a width of 60 cm.

If possible, then it is advisable to buy a special linden door for the steam room, and already by its dimensions, calculate the dimensions of the opening with scrupulous accuracy.

Formula for calculating openings for bath doors

In order to calculate the dimensions of doorways, we will use the simplest arithmetic. The height of the door clearance is banally designated by the letter B, and the width is W. We also need the thickness, that is, the size of a quarter of the box beam. Usually its side is 25 or 30 mm.

  • Add the thickness of the right and left beams to the width of the canvas, suppose 25 mm + 25 mm. In order for the door to function normally, you need to leave gaps on the porches. For free operation of the hinges, add 2 mm, and for the lock 4 mm. You will also need technological clearances for assembly seams. Right and left 10 mm each. Total: W + 2 × 25 + 2 × 10 + 2 + 4 = opening width. This means that 76 mm must be added to the width of the canvas.
  • Add 10 mm to the height of the door leaf without a sill. At the top, in addition to the box thickness of 25 mm, add 3 mm and another 10 mm for the gap for the upper assembly seam. Total: B + 3 + 25 + 10 + 10. It turns out that 48 mm should be added to the height. The height is calculated from the plane of the finished floor.
  • To the height of the door with the sill, add the thickness of the upper and lower box beams, 3 mm for the free operation of the door at the top and 5 mm at the bottom. Total: B + 2 × 25 + 5 + 3. It turns out that the difference between the height of the canvas and the height of the opening is 58 mm.

It is desirable that the doors in one room are on the same level, for which it is necessary to perfectly level the floors. If you plan to close the doors, do not forget that for their arrangement, you will also need to install platbands.

Features of the formation of openings in wooden baths

They can be formed in the process of erecting crowns from a log or a bar. You will need a preliminary marking of the elements of the log house and the implementation of additional grooves for fastening the boxes. After that, you will still need to wait for the time required for the traditional shrinkage of a wooden structure.

A year and a half of the post-construction break must be withstood in any case. Installation of door blocks in a wood bath is permissible only after intensive shrinkage.

It is much easier, having withstood the required technological break, to cut openings with a chainsaw according to precisely adjusted markings. When using this method, in order for the crowns not to "disperse" along the vertical axis of the wall, a groove is made for the installation of a reinforcing bar. The door frame is nailed to it.

Between the upper line of the doorway and the frame, it is imperative to leave 3-5 cm, since the wooden structure will slightly settle down later.

It is not difficult to calculate the dimensions of doors and doorways. Experts who thoroughly know the algorithm for installing door blocks will calculate all the necessary values at a time. Inexperienced performers are somewhat more difficult, since they need to understand why this or that gap is needed.

In case of an error in the calculations, the opening in the wooden box is easy to fix. If we need more, we'll use a chainsaw. But to reduce too much clearance, carpenters recommend installing an additional box - a counter box.

In order to bring the production of interior elements to a single model, standard dimensions of interior doors were introduced and approved at the state level. This greatly simplifies the selection of products when it is necessary to replace them. It is enough to make a correct measurement of the parameters of a typical opening and buy a suitable model.

If there are no problems with domestically produced products, then when buying an imported interior door, a difficult situation may arise, since there is a different standard in foreign countries. In addition, when buying alternative types of doors (double, sliding, hidden), you need to know some of their design features.

State standards

There are certain approved state standards (GOST), according to which domestic manufacturers produce interior interior elements. These are GOST 6629-88, as well as SNiPs 21-7, 21-8, 21-9, 21-10, 21-13. For ease of viewing, these data are summarized in a table, where the most common standards are displayed:

If the choice fell on a product of imported origin, then the dimensions of the interior door can be checked for compliance with European standards DIN 18100-18102, as well as DIN4172, indicating the dimensions of the opening in the light:

These dimensions must be taken into account if you plan to order, for example, an Italian door. Most likely, imported models will have non-standard dimensions that should be taken into account when laying doorways in the process of planning construction or major repairs.

For doorways in height exceeding 2000-2040 mm, its own standards have been developed, indicated in the table below.

The development of state standards takes into account the needs of the main segment of the population living in standard buildings. In the choice of typical models of one size or another, its functional purpose also plays an important role. In other words, the place in the apartment where this product will be located is important. In accordance with this requirement, the dimensions of the canvas, design features, and equipment with special fittings are selected.

The nuances of correct measurement of the opening

In some cases, it becomes necessary to independently measure the parameters for the purchase of an interior door. This happens if the house or apartment is located at a great distance from the manufacturing company, in another city or in another state. Self-measurement is also carried out in cases where there is no time to wait for the visit of the measurer, or it is more convenient for the customer to take measurements on his own. Regardless of the reason, this event must be carried out as accurately as possible so that the selected model fits perfectly into the existing opening without the need to adjust it. This means that the height, width and thickness of the interior door leaf should be as close as possible to the corresponding parameters of the opening. To make a correct measurement, you should be guided by the following rules.

Determination of the value of the width of the opening.

To do this, measure the distance between the walls at the narrowest point of the opening. If the wall becomes narrower closer to the door, then it is necessary to measure in this part. In the case of a uniform wall width without tapering, the location where the width is measured is not critical. If the dismantling of the old door has not yet been made, then the measured distance from the middle of one platband to the middle of the opposite platband is the width of the interior doors.

Determination of the height of the opening.

To determine the indicator of this dimension, it is required to measure the distance from the point of the finished floor to the lowest point of the upper part of the opening. If the doorway narrows closer to the hinges, then the measurement should be taken in this area. If the height of the opening is uniform, then the location of the measurement is not critical. The easiest way to measure is the old door, if it has not yet been dismantled. In this case, the height of the interior doors will be equal to the distance from the middle of the upper platband to the zero point of the finished floor.

Determination of the depth of the opening.

To do this, you will need to measure the thickness of the wall in which the doorway is located. This will be the depth of the opening. Measurement should be made in three sections: top, middle and bottom on both walls. This meticulous exercise is necessary in order to identify the widest spot in the wall. If the old door has not been dismantled, then it is necessary to measure the dimensions of the box and the wall (thickness) if it protrudes beyond the box. It is best to use the services of a professional to correctly measure the three key dimensions. Possessing a body of knowledge, the installer will make an impeccable measurement and give practical advice on choosing a typical or non-standard interior door. We remind you that when ordering doors from Porta prima, the visit of the master to measure the dimensions and consultation on the choice of the door leaf are absolutely free.

Formulas for measuring door leaf

Often there is such a situation that it is required to make a doorway, and the choice of the model of the canvas has not yet been made. In this case, to measure the parameters of the opening, the following points must be taken into account:

  • dimensions of the door leaf (width, height, thickness);
  • box dimensions (thickness, width);
  • indicator of the width of the platbands.

For greater clarity, an example of calculating the dimensions of a doorway will be given.

Suppose that a standard size door leaf with the following dimensions will be used for installation:

  • Vdv - door leaf height - 2000 mm;
  • Шдв - standard width of an interior door - 70 0 mm.

With such parameters of the interior product, a box will be installed, the thickness of which (Tc) will be 30 mm. In this case, the size of the mounting gap (Mz) will be equal to 10 mm, and the value of the door block (Bd) will be 20 mm. At these standard values, the threshold height (Bp) will be 20 mm.

Formula for calculating the width of the opening of the future door:

W of the opening = Shdv + 2 × Tk + Mz + 2 × Bd = 700 + 2 × 30 + 10 + 2 × 20 = 810 mm.

The opening height is calculated using the following expression:

In the opening = Vdv + Vp + 2 × Tk = 2000 + 20 + 2 × 30 = 2080 mm.

Therefore, for an interior door leaf with dimensions of 2000 × 700 mm, it will be necessary to make a doorway of 2080 × 810 mm.

The door frame is manufactured according to the standard of the opening depth of 7.5 mm. If the thickness of the door leaf of the interior door does not correspond to this indicator, it is necessary either to order a box according to individual dimensions, or to use additional elements in the design. Therefore, it is recommended to make calculations in advance.

How to calculate if the door fits into the opening?

A common situation is when a standard door is selected to an existing opening. Usually, a good clue for choosing is the labeling of door products, on which the main dimensions are indicated.

At this stage, doubts may arise whether the product will fit and whether there will be additional difficulties in its installation.

To dispel doubts, you need to reason as follows:

  • Let's say we have a doorway of 900 × 2040 mm, which meets the standard.
  • We calculate the width: we add the indicator of the standard width of the canvas 800 mm with the thickness of the box (on both sides) and design intervals of 15 mm. Note that there is an interval to the left and right of the door, so you need to multiply it by two. When calculating, we get 880 mm.
  • We calculate the height in a similar way. A door leaf height of 2000 mm is added to the box thickness of 25 mm and the top mounting distance of 15 mm. We get the value 2040 mm.

Therefore, an interior door with a standard size of 800 × 2000 mm will ideally fit into a typical opening with dimensions of 900 × 2040 mm. This once again proves the need to create state standards in the construction industry. You can safely buy a typical product without worrying about whether it will fit.

What to do if the door is chosen incorrectly?

However, there are situations when the purchased canvas with the box was not chosen accurately. When the return of the purchase is impossible for an objective reason, you can use some construction tricks:

  • when only a few millimeters in the width or height of the doorway are missing, you can carefully cut a wider hole in the wall;
  • if the box is narrower than the thickness of the wall, it is recommended to use an extension that will cover the prominent area of the thickness of the wall;
  • if the thickness of the box is much narrower than the dimensions of the doorway, then along the perimeter of the box (with the exception of the bottom) they are drawn into an even slope;
  • if the listed methods are unacceptable, it is recommended to order doors according to individual non-standard parameters.
