Wooden doors made of boards are affordable DIY methods. Do-it-yourself doors of different designs What to make light doors from

Wood is a natural material that has not lost its popularity despite the emergence of new and more modern materials. The valuable qualities of wood contribute to its active use in construction: strong, safe and beautiful doors are made of it. In this article we will talk about how to make a wooden door with your own hands. A wooden door with your own hands is a unique piece of furniture.

Regardless of the nature of the premises (residential, civil or industrial), all wooden doors can be divided into the following groups:

  • at the place of destination and installation - entrance external, entrance from the stairs, internal, closet and household
  • in size - single, double and one and a half (two-floor), triple (three-floor), with a canvas height of 2000 and 2300 mm and a width of 600; 700; 800 and 900 mm
  • according to the picture - deaf and with glass
  • by type of construction - panel board and paneled (frame, massive).

The structure of a wooden door includes the following elements:

  • frame (box)
  • fittings
  • lock
  • peephole
  • threshold
  • seals
  • directly the door.

By the type of construction, there are the following types of wooden doors:

  • from array
  • panel board
  • paneled.

The array is called continuous filling of the door leaf. The production of solid wood doors is carried out from a single piece of glued solid wood. The resulting door is the most durable of wood, because only the strongest types of wood are used to create them:

  • Pine
  • alder
  • Red tree
  • ash
  • Cherry.

All these types of wood are distinguished by their unique color and high quality characteristics.

Such a structure includes shields (solid or hollow) 3-4 cm thick, lined on both sides.

According to the production method, all panels are divided into:

  • solid. Such shields are created by gluing from wooden slats or from chipboard.
  • hollow panels are distinguished by their frame-sheathing structure. Corrugated cardboard is used as a filler. Frames without filler can be slatted, made of fiberboard strips, or lattice.

Facing of panel doors is carried out using plastic or hard fiberboard with a coating that imitates wood (for example, laminate) or veneer (it is applied with a thin layer of different types of wood: oak, beech, birch, walnut).

A standard panel door is not highly reliable to be used as an entrance door. For this reason, the panel door is reinforced with a special metal frame with insulation. The frame is made of metal, most often aluminum plates for the entire area of the door leaf.

Paneled doors are not used for installation at the entrance to an apartment or house, because they have a lightweight design, both in weight and strength. For such doors, a special structure with an array has been created (the strapping is reinforced, additional fasteners). It is in this form that the doors are used for installation at the entrance to the room.

Preliminary preparation

It is not difficult to create a door from an array, but you need to prepare a whole list of various devices:

  • plane
  • hacksaw or circular saw
  • hammer
  • chisel
  • roulette
  • self-tapping screws
  • joiner's glue
  • sandpaper
  • screwdriver or screwdriver
  • Grinder.

The circular saw is a high power tool that can cut wood lengthwise and crosswise. You can, of course, use a hacksaw, however, the cutting line will turn out to be uneven. Be sure to follow the safety rules when working with the circular saw.

You may also additionally need a milling machine. It will help smooth edges and corners, highlight any elements. In addition, it will help you cut out a place for a lock, or grooves for hinges and handles.

It is worth choosing an electric plane, it will help to cope with the work much faster.

You can replace the grinder with a grinder or a drill with a special attachment for grinding. However, the result of such work will be slightly worse, since pits and dents may appear on the wood.

A drill or screwdriver will be needed to assemble the entire construction of the blade, as well as for the installation of external elements. Chisels will help to neatly remove excess wood during the curly finishing process.

In addition to tools, you will need to select high-quality wood. A high-quality door will be made of spruce, larch, oak, ash. At the same time, when choosing hard types of wood, be sure to keep in mind that they are rather difficult to process. At home, it is better to choose soft varieties. The wood must be well dried and even. There should be no large knots or cracks in it. To achieve the required moisture content, in sunny and dry weather, the wood is taken outside for about 2 weeks.

The number of planks used is determined by the type of canvas. For example, a panel door will require a minimum amount of material, while a blind variety will require more material.

Now you can start measuring the opening. To all measurements, add 8 mm each if you need to make a nut. Next, start creating a box on which the door is fixed. The opening consists of two vertical slats and two crossbars. Their plane is created for mounting the fixing spikes on it. Using a hacksaw, you need to make openings with a spike and groove fastening. Next, glue them with glue.

The door leaf is made 3 mm less than the frame around the perimeter. Thus, you get a structure that can be easily closed and opened. For doors, you should choose a solid sheet of natural covering or fiberboard.

How to make a box

The manufacture of wooden doors begins with the manufacture of a box. To create it, it is worth using a bar 5 cm thick and 10 cm wide.

This important detail is fixed to the doorway, it is the starting point for fastening the canvas. To give the box maximum strength, it should be made of solid wood. On the surface of the duct elements, you need to make the connection points and the location of the connecting grooves. For this work, you should use a hacksaw and a knife. With these tools, openings are made similar to the thorn-groove connection. Then they are lubricated with an adhesive and tightly connected. The finished canvas is inserted into the created box and fixed to the wall with self-tapping screws.

How to create a door leaf

A solid block can be purchased at a construction supermarket, because the conditions of the living space will not allow it to be manufactured. They create it with the help of the glued joint of the timber and strips. It is most convenient to do all the work on the floor. The order of work is as follows:

  • the prepared material must be laid out on a flat plane, and small-sized lumber of vertical and horizontal type is immediately laid out
  • the connection points of the boards should be marked with a pencil. Keep track of the joining angle, it must be strictly 90 °
  • the longest parts are needed for cutting out the thorns on their surface. Be careful, the connection of the parts must be smooth
  • the end part of small boards should contain a groove hole, from the inside - a thorn. There should be two of these elements. It will be easiest for a home craftsman to work with a simple thorn, which corresponds to half the thickness of the tree.
  • spike and groove joints must be coated with adhesive. After that, they need to be fastened to the parts of the fiberboard, of which two pieces are taken. This way you get a multi-layer construction.
  • everything was done fastened to self-tapping screws, 25 mm long
  • if necessary, the door can be dried for about 2-3 days. It is imperative to put a load on it.

The front door is created in a similar way. The main difference is the need to insulate the structure, for example, with thin sheets of mineral wool. To increase reliability, an iron plate, 2 mm thick, can be placed inside the structure.

Warming process

If necessary, the canvas from the solid wood can be insulated. For this purpose, the structure is designed from the inside and outside. From the inside of the door, empty spaces are filled with any porous material. You can take glass wool, polystyrene, polystyrene, polyurethane foam. For internal insulation, you need to take the following components:

  • a piece of foam rubber, 1.5 - 2 cm thick
  • a piece of artificial leather measuring 25 - 30 cm
  • adhesive
  • large scissors
  • furniture stapler
  • special nails.

It is difficult to do this work alone, it is worth inviting an assistant. It is better to cut the foam rubber with a margin, 8-10 cm more. After that, you need to stick it on the canvas. The outer part is decorated with artificial leather. Be sure to control the same amount of material from all sides. The size of the canvas should correspond to the dimensions of the door, from which 1 cm is subtracted. This is where you need an assistant who will help to pull the material onto the surface of the structure. Fastening is carried out with a furniture stapler.

The fabric should be stretched as tight as possible, without wrinkles. The leatherette pieces need to be pulled and fastened with staples along the edge of the canvas: at first they are simply attached to the surface, then rolled up and attached to furniture nails. The connection points of the vertical and horizontal strips must be tucked at an angle of 45 ° and fixed with nails.

To make the cutout for the door handle neat, you need to make a hole in the back of the door. Next, using a sharp blade, a cross-shaped cut is made, which must be pierced in the center.

Wooden door design

In shops you can find wooden doors for various interior styles. Let's consider the most popular ones.

Wooden entrance door to a private house, photo

A wooden entrance door can be made by anyone with the right hands. Doors are one of the main elements for the interiors of most buildings.

They have certain functions: protection from unwanted visitors, heat preservation, protection from unnecessary noise, etc. Such structures are now more and more often made of metal, but the internal ones are almost always wooden.

Let's dwell on the manufacturing process itself.

Briefly what will be discussed:
  • Dowels
  • Paneled
  • Blocks
  • Mount for blocks
  • Platbands
  • Pins
  • Installation of hinges
  • Types of loops
  • Clearances
  • Regulation
  • Locks

Dowels

how to do

The main structural elements for doors are boards that form a panel, two dowels and a brace. It is located diagonally and serves to prevent distortion.

Usually, the slope and dowels are knocked out on the panel. For this, bars are used. In more difficult cases, the dowels are cut directly into the boards. For these purposes, the dowels are made according to the dimensions as shown in the figure.

The cuts are made with circular electric saws, exposing them at the desired incline (about 60 degrees).

Paneled

The outer side can be either simple or embossed. The corners of the platbands form a "mustache" at 45 degrees. In the beginning, the vertical platbands are sawn and set at the level.

Then a platband (horizontal) is placed under their upper part. The angle is marked with a pencil on one side, sawed off. Then it is also done with a different angle.

Do-it-yourself wooden entrance doors are installed by fastening the platbands with finishing nails or self-tapping screws.

Pins

The most common defects are warpage due to dry material. If there are pins, then in case of warping, it will not crumble. The absence of pins is unacceptable.

Hinges

When making entrance wooden doors with your own hands, you cannot do without hinges. Loops are more than 20 types (see). The height of the hinges can vary from 30 to 40 cm. For home doors, 75-150 cm is enough.

The most common are semi-hinged removable, consisting of two cards (one with a rod, the other without). Sometimes hinges are used. Hinges can be left and right, as well as universal.

Clearances

Before installing the hinges, the panel is placed so that there is no gap between the opening and it along the line of the hinges. To do this, use scraps of hardboard or identical slats, placing them so as to have a uniform gap.

The hinges are cut at a distance equal to their height, measured from the inner corner of the frame. If there are thorns in that place, you need to step back 1 cm from them.

After installing the spacers, measuring the distance at which the loops will be located, the cards are outlined with a pencil along the contour. The hinge slots are selected with a chisel based on the depth of the thickness. The surface of the hinges must be flush with the door leaf and the bar of the pillar.

Helpful advice! The door hinges are attached with self-tapping screws. If colored screws are used, then you need to know that they are fragile. Black wood screws are better hardened, more durable.

Door adjustment

If they start to close loosely or with a creak over time, they need to be adjusted. Adjustment (see) is the lubrication of the loops, tightening the screws, replacing them with longer ones, installing the wedges in the holes (if they are loose).

Lubricants are thick and hard consistencies: pieces of a graphite rod, grease, lubricants. After removing or as a result of lifting it, you need to push the grease into the loop hole in a certain amount. If after a while the grease begins to stand out from the hinges, it means that too much of it was put.

Sometimes they sag strongly, clinging to the floorboards. In order to eliminate this, it is necessary to place washers of a certain thickness of the inner and outer diameters between the hinge cards.

You can also rearrange the hinges higher, or scribble the lower end of the door leaf. It is necessary to shave sparingly in order to maintain a minimum gap with the permissible room humidity.

When making entrance wooden doors with your own hands, you need to keep in mind that if gaps have formed between the panels of the panel, they need to be glued and putty, or sorted out, or closed with planks.

Helpful advice! To avoid hitting the door with a canvas or a handle on the wall when opening, a buffer (stop) must be fixed to the floor. The further away from the hinges, the better.

About door locks

It is better if there is no castle, but there is. If fitted correctly, the handle should be sufficient to close the door with good tightness. If the door opens a little, a leather heel is stuffed on it.

The heel is stuffed with the required thickness on the panel closer to the handle, or on the upper end. The handle must be attached to the harness, but not to the paneled board, since this will be stronger. When installing the handle, it is taken away from the opening so as not to injure the hand.

Locks are installed on the outer doors. The most commonly used padlocks with the presence of loop-ears, as well as overhead and mortise. Hanging is the easiest option, but they are less reliable.

Chains, door closers, latches, bolts, eyes and other elements can also be installed on external doors.

Assembling a wooden door with your own hands

Choice of door material

Before making a wooden door with your own hands, you need to choose the material. For these purposes, it is best to use wood species that are durable, but at the same time are easily processed. These include:

type of wood Peculiarities
Pine Among the advantages are such points as:
  • Low price;
  • Ease of processing;
  • Low weight;
  • Resistant to moisture.

The only thing to note is that pine can dry out over time, so it is not always appropriate.

Alder It is also characterized by ease of processing and low weight. The only thing is that alder must be carefully treated with antiseptic compounds, since it is highly susceptible to decay.
Birch Hard enough and dense wood with a beautiful texture.
Oak It is a very strong and durable wood, however, difficult to work with. In addition, oak is quite expensive.
Beech Strong and durable rock, resistant to mechanical stress. The only thing, when making beech doors, should be borne in mind that this wood is susceptible to moisture. Therefore, it requires special handling.
Larch It is a strong and durable material that is resistant to moisture. The only drawback of larch is its rather high cost.
Maple It has good strength and is easy to process. Other advantages of maple include moisture resistance.

Note!
If you want to make wooden doors to the bathhouse with your own hands, then it is better to use linden, since when heated, this wood does not emit resin.

I must say that special impregnations allow changing certain qualities of wood.

Therefore, the main selection criteria are usually:

  • The first step is to cut a sheet of fiberboard, which should fit the size of the door frame.
  • Around the perimeter, the sheet is sheathed with boards... If a router is available, profiles should be made to connect the boards to each other according to the tenon / groove principle. You can attach the boards to the chipboard with self-tapping screws and wood glue.
  • Then stiffeners are mounted in the center in the same way..
  • Further, on both sides, the product is sheathed with plywood and veneer as a topcoat.

There is another technology for manufacturing a panel structure, which uses insulation. For its manufacture, you will need boards 25 mm thick and at least 50 mm wide, as well as plywood sheets.

Insulated door manufacturing

So, a warm wooden door with your own hands is made in the following sequence:

  • First, you need to make a frame from the boards, which is a frame and crossbars in the middle. Braces can also be used to provide greater rigidity.
  • Then, on one side, plywood is attached to the frame.
  • Then a heat insulator is placed in the frame, and the product on the other side is sheathed with sheet material.

The paneled structure is much more complex in execution, since it consists of many parts. Therefore, it is better to take on its manufacture after gaining experience in the manufacture of simpler products. However, after the manufacture of all the elements, the paneled door is assembled as a constructor, without any difficulties.

Paneled door design scheme

By design, it resembles a window frame, since it consists of a frame (strapping) and panels that fill the space of the frame.

Advice!
Since the door is a collapsible structure, when any of its parts becomes unusable, you can repair wooden doors with your own hands, replacing the damaged element with a new one.

So, the manufacturing process is as follows:

Mounting

  1. Measurements. Before buying products, measure the width and height of the opening (see). If there is no finishing floor covering, add the planned height to the calculations.
  2. ... After spreading the details of the box on the floor, look for the presence of everything you need. Measure again. Don't forget, one mistake and the job will go down the drain. Glue the parts in the corners, securing them with self-tapping screws.
  3. Foaming. Place the box in the opening. Secure the frame with wedges at the corners and center. Check the installed frame with a level. Install rigid spacers opposite the wedges. Then fill the spaces between the wall and the box with foam.
  4. Mounting. Wait until the foam dries, after 12 hours you need to remove its protruding pieces. Then remove the wedges, remove the spacers. Now it's the turn of the platbands. Saw down the previously required length at an angle of forty-five degrees, drill the holes for the nails. Attach the platband to the opening, fix it with finishing nails. The door can be hinged.
  5. Pens... After completing all the work, it remains to screw the handles. better in advance.

The door market is huge and natural wood is still a timeless classic. But not every door can be made by a beginner, so then you will find out which canvases an amateur can take, and which ones are better to order in a workshop. After that, we will analyze in detail how to make a door at home, and in 2 versions and with all the subtleties.

Not every door can be made by a beginner

It is not a problem to make wooden doors yourself, but first you need to figure out where you intend to put this canvas and what requirements are imposed on its aesthetic and operational data. After all, you must admit that a pantry in the backyard is one thing, and making doors with your own hands for rooms or your favorite bath is quite another.

Massive canvases

In this case, the term "massive doors" does not in any way refer to either the dimensions or the weight of the door leaf. This means that the doors are completely made of wood and there are no technological voids inside. Plus, such a canvas is assembled from solid boards and does not have any windows or other inserts.

Massive doors belong to an elite product

In stores, the price of such a product is one of the highest, and at the same time, making solid massive doors with your own hands is quite possible for any home craftsman. The strength of such a canvas is the highest, only iron doors are stronger than massive ones, and even then not all, if compared with Chinese goods, it is better to make the door yourself from a tongue-and-groove board.

Making doors with your own hands from a solid board for a beginner is quite realistic

Of course, you shouldn't take it straight away for a solid canvas, shining with exquisite polishing, but how to make doors with your own hands, for example, for a bath, we will tell you in all the details, but a little later.

Paneled canvases

Simply put, the term "paneled doors" means prefabricated doors. That is, first some kind of frame is made, and then panels (inserts) are inserted in certain places of this frame.

In classic paneled canvases, such inserts are made of wood. Glass can be used instead of wood in interior paneled doors. The design turns out to be light and beautiful, plus less material is spent on it.

But we do not advise novice craftsmen to take on this type of door. Firstly, in order to properly dock the frame strips and insert panels into them, you need skill, and secondly, making such canvases requires a lot of good things, including a professional tool.

Inserts in interior paneled doors can be made from different materials

Panel and frame canvases

From the point of view of the layman, panel and frame doors are not much different. It is believed that the panel door consists of a rectangular box, which is sewn on both sides with solid sheets of fiberboard or plywood. At the same time, her frame sister is made of the same box, only stiffeners from wooden bars are installed inside.

Professionals divide these doors according to other criteria; they distinguish between solid, hollow and small-hollow canvases.

  • Solid canvases are the highest quality in this niche. Inside the box is filled with a wooden lath, which significantly increases the strength of the structure. True, the quality of the slats is not the highest; waste often goes there. In part, this design resembles a solid massif, only there is used a high-quality grooved board, and here is production waste;
  • Small-hollow canvases - such doors differ from solid ones in that the inside of the canvas is filled in fragments. Roughly speaking, when they want to save money or do not have enough wooden slats for continuous filling, these slats are fastened with passes, through one;

On the left (A) solid, and on the right (B) shallow filling of the canvas

In panel boards, the technology and existing GOSTs allow using chipboard, MDF, polystyrene and even honeycomb cardboard as a filler, in addition to wooden slats.

  • Hollow canvases are the simplest and cheapest option for doors. Here, sheets of plywood or fiberboard are simply stuffed on both sides of the box. To make the empty box not so noisy, a filler is mounted there. The cheapest filler option is honeycomb cardboard, and the best option is foam.

It is clear that it is easier to make simple doors with your own hands, so we will leave the paneled structures alone and focus on massive and panel canvases.

Two options for assembling the door leaf

We decided on the types of structures, but before making a door with our own hands, let's briefly go through the minimum set of tools and choose wood for our future work of joinery art.

What tool is needed

There is never a lot of tools, at the same time it is not always possible to buy a complete set, but since you cannot make a door yourself without a tool, we will go through the main positions.

Carpentry tools for making doors

  • Hacksaw for wood;
  • Electric drill;
  • Square;
  • Roulette;
  • A set of screwdrivers or screwdriver;
  • Plane;
  • A set of chisels;
  • Level;
  • Minimum 2 - 3 clamps;
  • Metal hammer;
  • Mallet (wooden or rubber hammer);
  • Pliers;
  • Awl;
  • Emery or grinder.

If you want to make a really beautiful door with your own hands, then you will have to fork out for a high-quality hand-held milling cutter with a conductor (guide frame for the movement of the cutter). You will not make curly details without it.

A beautiful door cannot be made without a good cutter

Choosing wood

When choosing a wood species, it is advisable to take into account several recommendations. So for a dry room, you can take any wood, but since we make a door with our own hands, it is better to refuse from strong species, such as oak or acacia, it is difficult to process them.

In humid rooms, for example, in a bathhouse, it is better to take larch, aspen or pine, they are less susceptible to rotting. But at the same time, only hardwoods are used for the steam room; at high temperatures, resin will flow from the conifers. The most affordable option is linden.

For doors you need a so-called "business forest". Unlike the usual one, there are fewer knots, and most importantly it is well dried. The moisture content of the working wood should not exceed 15%.

Some firms offer wood impregnated with protective compounds in autoclaves, it costs a third more, but then you won't fool your head with antiseptics, plus industrial impregnation is an order of magnitude better.

In no case should you buy curved boards, especially the "propeller", no matter what they tell you, it is no longer realistic to align the behavior board.

Option number 1. Doors from solid wood

Making a door with your own hands begins with the selection of a board. The fact is that the basis of the canvas is a shield drawn from a grooved or simply planed board. If you are making doors to the utility room, then you can take a regular board, it is cheaper. If the door is in a conspicuous place, then it is better to buy a tongue-and-groove board.

The minimum thickness of the board for doors is 25 mm, but it is inconvenient to work with such a strip, so if you have a single-layer board, it is better to use a board with a thickness of 40 mm or more.

A tongue-and-groove board is an order of magnitude better

First, take the boards and connect them together on a completely flat table. The tongue-and-groove board is joined according to the tenon-groove principle, so it can be difficult to assemble the board “dry” the first time. At this stage, your task is to clean out all the burrs so that the shield connects normally.

When the shield is assembled, you number the boards with a pencil and disassemble the structure. Now, one by one, put wood glue into the groove of each strip and re-connect the shield into a single structure. This time, the first plank rests against some hard ledge, and all subsequent boards, when docked, are firmly knocked out with a mallet.

So that the shield strips do not disperse during drying, they need to be tightened in 2 - 3 places with clamps from the sides, plus 2 even boards are applied from above and below and also tightened with clamps. With this approach, the planks will no longer lead anywhere.

The shield is tightened with clamps in 2 - 3 places

In a day, some of the clamps can be removed and the installation of the main retaining stiffeners can be started. Stiffening ribs are the simplest option for assembling massive doors, they can be positioned as you like, the main thing is that they reliably hold the vertical slats of the shield and provide rigidity to the canvas.

The connection will be an order of magnitude stronger if you embed the stiffeners into the canvas array, but here you have to choose the grooves for the stiffeners. Theoretically, such grooves can be selected using a hacksaw and a chisel, but only a master is capable of this, for an amateur for such work it is better to take a milling cutter or even refuse to cut in strips, just nail them from above.

But there is another alternative, in which overhead stiffeners are not used. For this case, it is advisable for you to have a milling cutter. The scheme is approximately as follows: you assemble the shield, then cut a groove along the upper and lower ends of the shield and glue a grooved board into it. Additionally, the connection is fixed with self-tapping screws.

The decor of massive doors made of natural wood is a separate big topic and it is best revealed.

Option number 2. Assembling the panel door

If you figured out how to make the doors yourself from the array, then assembling hollow panel doors will not be difficult for you. In this case, the most important thing is to assemble a solid frame. Often, for these purposes, a board with a thickness of 20 mm or more is taken.

The option for joining the corners is shown in the diagram below, but if you do not want to bother with cutting out the grooves, then you can do it easier, take metal furniture corners and select small recesses for them with a chisel, tighten the body with corners. In any case, then all connections will be covered with a shield.

The most affordable option for sheathing the box is fiberboard or plywood, but the appearance will not be the best. If the appearance of the doors is important to you, then it is better to buy a ready-made laminated MDF board; among professionals, such boards are called door cards.

Usually, an MDF card is simply planted on good wood glue, but if you are in doubt about the strength of the structure, then you can add a few self-tapping screws. Only in this case, the caps of the screws will have to be covered somehow, for example, with stickers or plastic chips.

We do not recommend making a completely hollow door for you, there should be several stiffeners inside. And so that the empty box does not "ring" the rest of the space can be filled with foam or mineral wool.

For insulation and noise absorption, it is advisable to fill the panel door with foam or mineral wool

Now you just have to choose and cut in the hinges and then install your new doors. You can learn about the intricacies of choosing and cutting hinges, and the door installation technique is shown.

Output

As you can see, making a door with your own hands is not so difficult, in any case, a person who is not afraid of a hacksaw and a hammer can handle such a task. In the video in this article, the masters reveal their subtleties and give recommendations for arranging doors, so study our instructions, watch the video and do not be afraid, you will succeed.

A task such as wooden doors with your own hands is quite feasible even for a beginner in this business. Wood is a very convenient material to work with, so your imagination is practically unlimited. You have a unique opportunity to create one of the most important interior elements in your home yourself.

Wooden doors are suitable for any interior

Selection of material

If you do everything with your own hands from scratch, first of all you need to pick up the material. Since you will be making interior and exterior doors from wood at home, for this purpose it is best to select sufficiently strong rocks that can be processed well. Pay attention to these options:

  • Pine. One of the cheapest breeds, it has a low weight and lends itself well to processing. It can dry out over time, therefore it is not always appropriate as a door leaf.
  • Alder. It is also light and soft, perfectly processed, but not resistant to decay and shrinkage.
  • Birch. Dense and moderately hard, viscous and fine texture, may deteriorate over time.
  • Oak. It is very strong and durable wood, but it is rather difficult to process it with your own hands, it can split during work.
  • Beech. It is very durable and resistant to mechanical stress, it is prone to react to changes in humidity, therefore, it necessarily requires special processing.
  • Larch. Strong, with a homogeneous beautiful texture, good processing and does not deteriorate over time.
  • Nut. It lends itself well to processing, while being very resistant to damage and moisture. Long-lasting breed.
  • Maple. Durable, but at the same time excellent workability, excellent polishing and good moisture resistance.

Pine is the most affordable material

To eliminate some of the shortcomings, impregnation and varnishing allow, in most cases the weight of the material and its durability become the determining factor.

Tools and fittings

Since it is supposed to make a wooden door yourself, you need to take care of the availability of all the necessary tools and auxiliary materials. If you are making an entrance door, you will need:

  • peephole;
  • locks;
  • a pen.

Hardware for wooden doors

For interroom, there will be enough handles with or without a latch. Also find the right hinges. The following tools are most likely useful to you:

  • drill;
  • planer, sandpaper or sander;
  • chisel;
  • saw;
  • nails.

Fabrication of canvas

The most important stage is, perhaps, the production of the canvas itself. There are many ways to make a wooden door with your own hands, it is important to take into account the specifics of the opening for which this structure is being prepared.

How to make a solid wooden entrance door to a house? It is best to use a solid piece of wood for this purpose. The fact is that the entrance to the house must be reliably protected from strangers, as well as from drafts and noise from the street. To do this, you need to select material that will allow you to cope with all these tasks. Of course, you can try to create a curly product with various decorative inserts and onlays, however, it is much more difficult to do it yourself, so for the first time it is better to go the simple way.

A wooden door can be made not only from a solid sheet, but also from individual boards

First, measure the doorway, according to this data, a frame for the door to the house is being made. Next, you need to fill the boards on one side of it. To improve sound insulation, fill the interior with insulation. After that, stuff the boards to the other side. In principle, for the entrance to the house, you can do it with blind inserts.

And how to make interior doors from wood with your own hands? There are many more options available here:

  • Panels- the fabric is made according to the principle of the designer. The frame is represented by a thicker array. A panel is inserted into the center of the door. For this, grooves are drilled in the frame, thin panels are inserted there. They can be of different types, it all depends on the wishes of the master. The joints are reinforced with wood glue.
  • Glass inserts- to begin with, the base is made, and after that a recess is cut from above for the insert. The glass can be inserted into the grooves or fixed in the frame with glazing beads.
  • Sliding- a canvas of small thickness or a wooden frame upholstered with another material is used.

Decor

After you make the basis for the canvas, you can proceed to the next stage, the essence of which is processing and. First of all, we will consider the manufacture of wooden entrance doors to the house with our own hands. Several options are available here. Antiseptic impregnation is mandatory. After that, you can choose one of these methods:

  • staining and varnishing;
  • pasting with veneer or PVC;
  • cladding with dermantin.

If the canvas turns out to be small in thickness, you can use MDF overlays, which will not only increase the massiveness of the structure, but also give the door additional useful properties.

For interior wooden doors, you can come up with an original design and bring it to life with your own hands. In addition, there is a place for fantasy to roam. The most popular options:

  • preservation of wood texture - stain and varnish or wax impregnation;
  • painting;
  • covering with foil, veneer or laminate;
  • decoration with fabric;
  • gluing wallpaper;
  • drawing on the door.

If wood susceptible to moisture is used, it is recommended to treat it with a water-repellent impregnation, or even better - to cover it with several layers of varnish.

In order for a wooden door leaf to serve for a long time, it must be treated with a protective impregnation or painted

Installation

The last stage of making wood doors with your own hands is the installation of the canvas in the doorway. To do this, you can use an old tray or mount a new box. For this purpose, the same material is used as for the canvas.

A very important point is the insertion of loops. In order for the door to become perfect, you need to carefully align the position of the canvas with respect to the opening and the floor. The standard version is mortise hinges, they are installed flush.

A wooden door is usually installed using mortise hinges

After the door is hung, you can start cutting in the locks and handles. For this, it is convenient to use a drill with various attachments or a screwdriver if the wood is soft enough. First, the mechanism itself is installed on the door, after which the position of the latch tongue and crossbars is verified and a recess is drilled in the mating frame. Interior doors can be fitted with knobs, lever handles or rosette versions. But at the entrance to the house, at least two versions of the castle should be installed. It is best to use a combination of lever and cylinder mechanisms.

If all the work is done correctly and accurately, a self-made door will be no worse than the production version.

Doors are a necessary element of the interior, which not only makes it complete, but also carries several main functions: it protects the room from unwanted intrusion and retains heat inside it. Among all the variety of such products, the most popular are canvases made of wood. The cost of such models is not small, but if you make a door out of wood with your own hands, you can save a considerable amount of money. There are several techniques by which you can make such interior items, we will dwell on one of them in detail. In this article, we will look at how to make a door from boards with our own hands.

Types of wooden doors

Before making a wooden door with your own hands, you need to decide on some of the subtleties of the design of various types of canvases. The production of massive panels is carried out from planed or thick-walled planks, equipped with a “tongue-and-groove” locking system, assembled into a one-piece panel.

Thorn-groove connection

If you opted for this particular option, then you should carefully choose the material for its manufacture. Speaking of the front door, it is better to make it from dense high-quality wood: cedar, oak or larch. Well, when your bath needs to be supplemented with such a design, then in this case it is better to give preference to less expensive raw materials, choosing deciduous trees like linden. The only nuance in the manufacture of the door to the steam room is that all structural elements must be treated with an antiseptic and moisture-repellent solution.

For the assembly of paneled door leaves, a wooden beam and boards are taken, which were obtained by gluing wooden lamellas. After assembling all structural elements, the timber is covered with natural veneer, giving the product a beautiful design. In this case, glazed parts can also be used, which makes it possible to obtain a unique door panel.

There is another option for doors that are relatively low cost - panel doors. Such interior items are made from inexpensive "consumables" - fiberboard (chipboard, MDF, thick cardboard, etc.), which is faced with laminated panels or veneer.

Preparatory activities

How to make a door with your own hands? In fact, this is not such a difficult process. Adhering to the step-by-step instructions proposed further, even an inexperienced person can make a door with his own hands.

Selection of "consumables" and tools

Assembling wooden door panels will be faster and better if you carry them out on a stable workbench. In the absence of such, free up space on the floor and clean it of dirt, dust, etc.

What tools are required:

  • manual milling cutter, screwdriver, jigsaw (if there are none among your tools, you can rent them at any hardware store);
  • a plane and a set of different-sized chisels;
  • a pair of hammers - rubber and regular;
  • level, plumb line, square;
  • pencil, tape measure;
  • sander or sandpaper.

Building materials:

  • tongue-and-groove boards equipped with a thorn-groove mount - the thickness is selected depending on the purpose of the product being manufactured;
  • a set of different-sized self-tapping screws;
  • wood putty or primer;
  • antiseptic;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • joiner's glue.

After purchasing wood, it is advisable to dry it. And even if you have been assured that the material is completely ready for work, it is better to reinsure yourself. Each board is laid on a gasket, which can be absolutely any moisture-absorbing cloth. Make sure that the elements do not touch each other.

Excessive moisture inside the wood can lead to mold and decay processes. And this, in turn, significantly reduces the service life of the door panel.

Drying is carried out for one to two months, while the temperature in the room should be 25 ° C. And do not forget to ventilate the room from time to time (just not in rainy weather).

Boards need several days to "acclimatize"

If a special chamber is used for drying, then it is highly undesirable to exceed the temperature regime above 50 ° C. This can lead to the release of resinous substances from wood (when using conifers), which will significantly reduce the strength characteristics of the finished product.

Getting Started

Let's consider step by step how to make a wooden door panel:

  1. At the first stage, you need to mark and cut the boards into elements of the required length. After that, we lay out the prepared segments so that the drawings of the annual rings look in one direction.

  1. The next stage is the assembly of the boards in the panel, fixing them by means of the “thorn-groove” fastening system. As an additional fastening, the parts need to be glued together with wood glue.

Assembling a structure made of wood

  1. Now we cut off the spike from the extreme element and process the end using a grinder for this purpose. After that, the panel is compressed with clamps and left to dry completely.

During drying, the wooden board should be on a level surface. This will avoid distortions.

  1. After drying, the panel is milled and sanded. If there is a need to strengthen the structure, then two canvases are made at once, which, when glued, are superimposed perpendicular to each other. As a rule, panels for entrance doors are made in this way.

Possible types of door cross-straps

  1. Next, you need to fasten the product with a strapping, which consists of 2-3 crossbars:
  • preparation of wooden pieces with a size equal to the width of the door, while the shape of the crossbars is made in the form of a trapezoid, which ensures better entry of the elements into the groove;
  • we apply markings for the placement of the transverse parts;
  • note the depth of the groove - as a rule, its value is equal to half or a third of the thickness of the board;
  • cutting of transverse grooves;
  • processing of grooves with an adhesive base and the introduction of transverse structural elements into them.

We are decorating

After the panel is assembled and well dried, you can start decorating it. First of all, it is necessary to process the surface with sandpaper or a grinder. Further, the wood is treated with an antiseptic solution. After the antiseptic is completely dry, the panel is putty or primed. It remains only to cover it with varnish, stain or paint. The color and number of layers depends solely on the aesthetic preferences of the owner of this product.

Stain finish

If it is supposed to apply several layers of decorative coating, then it is imperative to let the previous one dry before applying the next one.

Regardless of the chosen decorative coating (stain or paint), two layers of varnish must be applied over it. If we are talking about making an entrance door, then in addition to an antiseptic, the canvas is also covered with a water-repellent liquid.

Moving on to installation work

After the homemade wooden door is completely ready, you can start installing it. Guided by the dimensions of the opening, we assemble the door frame and check the evenness of its installation. The frame is fixed by means of anchor bolts, and the attachment points are closed with decorative plugs. Then we try on the panel to the opening and, if there are any errors, we adjust the dimensions of the product.

Layout scheme before installation

The next step is to fix the door panel in the opening. But before that, it is necessary to blow out the gaps between the frame and the opening with the help of polyurethane foam and, after it has dried and trimmed, to collect the elements of the platbands.

Now you need to install all the necessary fittings. Then we mark the places for hinges and awnings and cut them out with a chisel. Optimum fastening of the hinges is flush with the end of the panel.

It remains only to make the grooves for the locking mechanisms to install the panel on the hinges, while adjusting the location of the structure. And do not forget to provide striker plates for the locking mechanism on the door frame.

Knowing how to make a wooden door yourself, you will be able to implement the task in the best possible way.
