Homemade stepladder ladder. How to make a step-ladder with your own hands from a profile pipe - step by step instructions

It is difficult to find a material that is stronger than steel and lighter (with the same strength) than aluminum, so the most reliable is a stepladder for the house, made of metal with your own hands.

DIY stepladder: choosing the best option

A durable and lightweight staircase is needed in a suburban area, for example, in a garden, and in a private house, and in an apartment with high ceilings, it will be useful. And it is not always the best option - from a fairly light and strong tree. Especially when it comes to the use of inventory on living space in a multi-storey sectional building. The fact is that wood requires special care, due to the fact that it easily absorbs moisture and tends to dry out, and also easily becomes the habitat of various bugs. The metal is less vulnerable, although it can corrode if it is not a special alloy or aluminum.

There are three types of construction ladders - ordinary A-shaped, universal and transforming ladders. The former are unremarkable, but the latter may already be of interest to many owners of suburban areas. The fact is that universal structures are able to unfold from an A-shaped position to a straight one, that is, turn into an ordinary staircase. Sometimes they also have a third version of the position, such as "goats", that is, they take the shape of the letter P. As for transformers, they can usually be part of the interior, turning into tables and chairs as unnecessary.

The most difficult option for self-production is a small folding step-ladder, only those who are very sophisticated in plumbing work know how to make it with their own hands. It is much easier to build an ordinary A-shaped staircase at home by assembling it using a bolted or welded joint from steel or aluminum blanks. However, if used, a combination of metals is allowed, for example, aluminum posts and steel bars, this will greatly facilitate the design.

It should be borne in mind that the welded joint is the most durable and, if necessary, can be easily restored, in contrast to the bolted one. The latter, with an incorrect calculation of the resistance of the material to the load, is fraught with certain problems. In particular, an excessive mass applied to the bolt deforms it into bending, as a result of which, at the point of highest stress, the metal can burst. But even a simple bent bolt is already inconvenient when dismantling the ladder. Also, under load, the holes for the connecting elements sometimes lose their shape, which also complicates dismantling.

Making a step-ladder with your own hands in stages

Since it is quite obvious that metal has some advantages over wood, consider how to make a stepladder from ordinary steel. Of course, it is highly desirable to have skills in working with a welding machine. We will also use a bolted connection. That is, we get a combined assembly.

DIY stepladder - master class

Step 1: connecting the posts

For the legs of the staircase, that is, its four supports, we need 4 pipes of a square or rectangular profile (the latter option is more desirable). Their length should be the same. At one end of each, we make through perforation with an identical indent from the end for all blanks. Next, we simply connect the supports in pairs with long bolts with a short threaded thread at the end. Such fasteners will allow the supports to move freely in relation to each other, as if on a hinge.

Step 2: markup

We lay the folded pairs of supports in parallel and begin to measure equal segments from the bottom of the outer legs, making markings for future rungs or steps. Any material can be used for them: the same profile, fittings, corner. It is highly advisable to verify the markings using a protractor so that the steps are strictly at 90 ° to the supports.

It should be as accurate as possible so that there are no distortions.

Step 3: welding the steps

We connect the welding machine to the mains, if you have it electric, and insert the electrode into the holder, if the unit is carbide, then we refuel it and adjust the burner. It is better to start making a step-ladder with your own hands with spot welding installation. First, it is better to fasten the upper and lower crossbars, while adjusting the distance between the supports.

Then intermediate elements are installed and fixed by points, according to the previously made markings. When the structure is assembled, we make sure that the parts are connected correctly and we make welds.

It is quite possible to use blanks for steps or rungs longer than necessary, the surplus is then simply sawed off.

Step 4: Installing the second section cross members

The second two supports also need to be connected together so that they do not move separately. Therefore, we turn the structure over, take another 2-3 trims of the same material that went to the rungs or steps, and weld it onto the inner secondary racks from above, below and in the middle.

For strength, you can add another piece diagonally between the crossbars. We fasten a cable between the sections with enough slack to push the supports apart to the distance necessary for the stability of the structure.

Step 5: weld on the base crossbars

On this, the manufacture of a step-ladder could be completed if it was used only for home. However, in an area where there is little hard surface such as asphalt or tiles, the supports will easily sink into the ground, especially after rain. To avoid, we take two more trimming of the profile and weld it from below onto the ends of the legs, connecting in pairs the outer and inner stair legs.

However, there is one inconvenience in using a rectangular pipe - it can become clogged with earth. Therefore, in order not to do unnecessary work, welding the ends of the profile, it is better to use a corner, especially if this particular material was launched on the steps. The stepladder is ready.

Homemade stepladders of complex design

Above mentioned are universal stepladders and transformers. It is much more difficult to make them yourself, however, if you still have such a desire, it is better not to use a steel profile for this purpose. For structures of a universal type, aluminum will be the optimal material, and small transformers that turn into interior items are more convenient to make from thin duralumin tubes... The connection is bolted, it is possible with anchor, and not ordinary nuts, in order to avoid self-loosening.

In fact, even the step-ladder, the description of the manufacture of which was given earlier, can be made universal, that is, turning into an attached one. If you make the safety cable removable, one section in relation to the other will be able to rotate 270 °, that is, a position is possible when all the supports will be in the same plane. If you unfold the ladder and weld powerful bolts on the outer sides of its legs in the knee region, so that the latch is on one section, and the receiving bracket on the other, you will get a reliable fixation. It only remains to turn one section by 180 ° if necessary, click the bolts, and you will have a long ladder in your hands.

Structurally, this type of ladder is very similar to those that can be found today in almost any hardware store. The only difference is that it is made not of aluminum, but of a shaped pipe. This material is very good because, due to its cross-section, it is less prone to bending, rather light (when compared with wood), plus it is not difficult to purchase, since there is a wide selection on sale of absolutely any size.

The ladder can be used both in the house when carrying out cosmetic repairs, and in the country, during the harvest. If you look at the photo of the step-ladder made from the profile made by your own hands, and at the “shop” one, you can see one significant difference - the second has many stiffening ribs. This is all in order to strengthen the ladder, because aluminum itself is a light and soft metal. Although there are no such ribs on the profile, the strength does not suffer, since the pipe is heavier and less prone to deformation.

DIY tools for making a ladder

Here you need a little skill and skill, since you will have to use:

  • electric welding;
  • grinder;
  • drill;
  • common tools like tape measure, marker and angle.

Before starting work, stock up on electrodes and discs for metal for the grinder, because during the manufacture and installation of the ladder, you will have to cut a lot of material. You also need to think about your safety: wear special glasses when cutting, because small metal shavings will be enough; use a mask when working with welding, as eyesight can be seriously damaged.

We make a ladder with our own hands

First, think about how long you need a ladder; sketch out a rough drawing or, more correctly, a sketch; it will not hurt if you find and view a photo with each stage of production, or even a video that shows everything in detail. The material that needs to be prepared right away is a profile of a suitable section. Depending on the height of the ladder you need, you will cut two equal pieces of pipe.

Rust must be removed immediately to facilitate further work. To do this, it is best to use a drill or grinder with a metal brush attachment. We fix the pipe and clean it to a metallic sheen. Next, we proceed to cutting steps from the same profile. Also remove the rust from them first. The easiest way is to cut steps from a profile of the same length. Trying on the steps (it is best to do this on a flat floor or workbench). If necessary, adjust the dimensions.

When everything is ready, we grab the steps of the future stepladder by welding to the base, check for irregularities, if there are none, we finally connect.

Now we weld "patches" from below, and from above we close the holes in the pipes. Half done. We take a profile pipe (smaller section is possible), cut off two pieces with a length equal to the resulting ladder. At a distance of 0.25-0.3 meters from the bottom and top of these blanks, we weld the crossbeams. Their length should be equal to the length of the stairs. We weld the two halves with suitable canopies. Approximately in the middle of the ladder, you need to drill holes on both sides in the profile pipe and use bolts to fasten some kind of belt that will prevent your metal ladder from decomposing.

Better or worse than analogs?

Of course, it is worth carrying out the finishing work - priming and painting. But even in this form, a metal step-ladder is quite suitable for use, only high humidity will soon make itself felt. This manufacturing option is the fastest, but if you pay more attention, effort, patience and time, you can make a design that will be many times better than store counterparts.

Therefore, in order to achieve higher qualities of your step-ladder, you need to make drawings to scale, view photos of finished structures and make your own development on their basis. In general, we can say that even the simplest staircase is in no way inferior to factory products.

Stepladders are folding ladders that are indispensable for performing various works in a city apartment, in a private house and in the country. These ladders are comfortable, stable, compact and practical. A do-it-yourself stepladder can be made from scrap materials. The manufacturing process is simple and within the power of everyone. At the same time, a self-made step-ladder will not be inferior in functionality and reliability to industrial designs. This article has everything about how to do it: a description of the process and tips.

Stepladders, their types and features

How to make a ladder with your own hands? First you need to choose the most suitable folding structure model, then choose the material from which the step-ladder will be made with your own hands. In terms of appearance and functionality, these stairs are conventionally divided into three groups:

  • Classic.
  • Universal. Universal structures are distinguished by the fact that they can also be used as a conventional (attached) ladder structure. Such ladders are divided into folding and telescopic.
  • Telescopic models are assembled from several sliding sections, which are securely fixed with hooks or automatic locks (latches). These stairs can be very high.
  • Transformer step-ladder is a modern, universal, multifunctional step-ladder. The transformer consists of sections that are connected with hinges. The hinges allow you to easily and quickly change the position of the sections and securely fix the selected position. The transformer can easily take the form: a classic model, a ladder with a console, a convenient building platform, a regular (extension) ladder.

Multifunctional transformer step ladder

Construction height

How to determine the correct height of your folding ladder? To do this, it is necessary to know the maximum height to which it is necessary to reach from the upper stage of the structure. From this height, they take away their height and 30-35 cm, which will allow you to perform all the necessary actions without touching the ceiling with your head. The stepladder for a standard apartment has a height of 70 to 150 cm. The number of steps depends on the height and can be from 3 to 5 steps. For industrial needs and construction work in a private house, a model with a platform is convenient. A more complex design (transformer step-ladder) allows you to significantly increase the height of the stairs.

Materials for making

As a rule, folding structures are made of wood or metal (aluminum alloy or steel). The choice of material depends on the purpose of such a ladder, its size and the load that it must withstand.

Stepladders made of light and durable aluminum alloys are very popular. If you are planning to make a transformer, then you should pay attention to aluminum materials. Structures can be assembled from one type of material, or you can combine several different ones. For example, a garden folding ladder or a reliable stepladder for building renovation work can be made from steel pipes (posts) and wood (steps).

The best option for making a step-ladder is an aluminum profile or pipes. Of course, you can make a stepladder for the house and from wood. This is the simplest and most affordable option. But it is worth considering that for such work you need to use high-quality, well-dried wood.

Timber constructions

The first thing to do is to develop drawings of the future wood structure. It is necessary to clearly imagine what kind of step-ladder will have, to determine its configuration, basic parameters. While working on the drawings, they are also determined with the choice of fasteners and materials that will be needed to make the stairs. A full-fledged transformer from wood, as a rule, is not made.

For the bowstring of a wooden step-ladder, beams are used (approximately 5x5 cm), for the steps - a board (3-4 cm thick). It is necessary to mark and cut off the bowstring beams of the required length. They should match the height of your ladder.

Important! To ensure the stability of the structure, the lower ends of the wooden beams are cut at an angle of approximately 30 degrees.

The next stage is the manufacture of rungs (steps). The number of steps is calculated taking into account the total height of the ladder and the optimal distance between the rungs. The standard step for ascent / descent is 35 cm, approximately this distance should be between steps. It is worth considering that almost all models of stepladders have a peculiarity: they taper from bottom to top. The length of the first (lower) step should be approximately 65 cm, the upper one - no more than 35 cm. The dimensions of the steps will have to be adjusted during the manufacture of the ladder. After preparing the steps of the required size, it is advisable to number them on the reverse side.

If an additional platform is provided in the construction of the stairs, then it is made of the same material as the steps. The second half of the stepladder (supporting) is also assembled, only instead of steps to strengthen the strength, crossbeams are used, nailed across or diagonally (different options are possible here).

Bolts are used to securely connect all parts of a wooden structure, and hinges are used to ensure the mobility of its parts, and spacer mechanisms or stops are used to fix the position.

Installation is started by connecting the bowstring and crossbars. To do this, self-tapping screws are screwed into the ends, at the points of fastening of the steps. All joints must be treated with wood glue. The steps must be parallel to the floor plane when the ladder is unfolded. If the staircase has a platform, then an additional support is mounted. The movable halves of the ladder are connected by hinges. A travel stop must be provided. Fix it at two ends. The limiter ensures stability and reliability of the wooden structure.

Making a wooden stepladder with your own hands

If the steps are attached with glue, then to increase the strength of the structure, the bowstrings are pulled together with metal rods. They are placed under the steps: below (under the first step), in the middle, above (under the upper step).

To protect against decay, the wooden elements of the ladder must be covered with an antiseptic compound that creates a water-repellent film. You can also varnish the product without affecting the metal parts of the structure.

Metal constructions

A metal step ladder can be made from pipes or profiles. When working with metal, great care must be taken and all sharp edges must be carefully processed after cutting.

Advice! To protect hands and feet from injury during the operation of a folding metal structure, you can use special plastic or rubber plugs.

Metal products can be collapsible (detachable connections are used for installation) or monolithic (welded). A welded joint is usually used for a steel structure made of pipes and angles.

To make a metal step ladder, you will also need a drawing. When working on the design of a metal ladder, it is worth making one part of it longer, which will allow you to form comfortable handles on top and make it easier to fix the hinges without compromising the strength of the structure. A metal profile of rectangular cross-section is the best option for installing a folding ladder. But a product made of steel pipes and corners turns out to be quite heavy, which is not very practical, especially for home use.

To make a stepladder, you need a metal profile (section about 20x40 mm). The length of the profile must correspond to the calculated height of the ladder. After cutting all the necessary parts, be sure to carefully finish the edges. The necessary holes for bolted connections are drilled in the metal. The hinges are installed in the same way as in wood products. As a limiter, you can use a pipe segment secured with movable metal bolts.

When building a house with at least 2 floors, you definitely need to think about the stairs in it. And if the house will be built with your own hands, it is logical to make the stairs as well.

Various photos of stairs help you make a preliminary selection and clearly understand what type of climb you need. But before taking on the work, carefully calculate the future structure for strength and dimensions, this will save time and money, because incorrect calculations (or their absence) will lead to numerous alterations of the original project.

Types of stairs

There are many different options for flights of stairs. They differ in the material of manufacture (wood, concrete or metal), the type of rise (gentle staircase, spiral, with a turn by a certain degree).

The most common is a wooden staircase. Also, a staircase with a 90-degree turn is often built. It is not uncommon for these two types of lifting devices to be combined into one.

In the case of limited space, a spiral staircase is made of metal. The helical type of lifting allows you to save space, and the manufacture of metal - to increase the strength of the structure. Concrete is used for stairs in massive buildings (for example, mansions).

What to look for

In a low-rise building, having no construction experience, it is better to order a modular staircase, a kind of constructor, where all the details are cut out and numbered, and you just have to assemble them using the instructions. These are usually wooden stairs.

When building a staircase made of concrete, in addition to pouring the frame, you will need to perform an external finish (with beautiful stone or wood materials). This is a double waste of time and money. However, for cottages of 3 or more floors, they are mandatory for fire safety requirements.

When making a ladder for the first time, you do not need to immediately swing at a complex structure. The simpler the model, the more likely you will be able to successfully build this lifting device on the first attempt.

Pay attention to the angle of inclination of the ladder: if it is more than 45 degrees, the ladder will be considered an attached ladder, and you can go down it only with your back forward. The optimal ascent angle is considered to be 37 degrees.

Wood as a material for construction is preferable, since it allows, due to its properties, to correct minor construction flaws that have arisen due to inaccurate calculations and inexperience of the contractor.

Also, after construction, the building may settle due to loose soil, as a result, the staircase can become a few centimeters higher or lower than the floor, and it is easier to fix this in a wooden structure.

When constructing a lift with a turn towards the opposite, the distance between the spans must be at least 100 mm.

Construction stages

Answering the question of how to make a staircase to the second floor with your own hands, there are several stages of construction.

The first stage of any construction, be it a staircase to a house, or an interfloor staircase, is the creation of a project. Particular attention should be paid to the safety of the building and its ease of use.

The structure must be able to support the average weight of an ordinary person with a fair amount. The use of handrails is mandatory!

If they are not there, another fence must be designed to ensure the safety of the descent and ascent.

Consider creating a wooden staircase with stringers

After you have designed your building, you need to prepare the materials. In our case, choose boards of suitable thickness and length, prepare balusters with railings and prepare stringers. This will be the second phase of construction.

A pine board 4 cm thick is suitable as a material for kosour.On it, we mark the steps according to the pattern and cut it out with an electric jigsaw.

Note!

We use the resulting product as a sample for the second (and if the width of the stairs is more than a meter, then the third) kosour. We will cut the required number of steps to size.

The third step is to assemble all the parts together. First of all, stringers are installed in their places of permanent placement. Then, using self-tapping screws, the steps are attached to the stringers.

Then, using pins, balusters are placed on the steps, and handrails are attached to them. The ladder is ready!

DIY ladder photo

Note!

In those designs where high reliability and durability are required, the elements are made from metal parts.

A ladder from a profile pipe with your own hands, made at home, is no exception.

The main types of stairs

A step ladder is a ladder that can stand on its own using any suitable support (wall, for example).

The stepladder can be of one-sided or two-sided type. The design has a frame to which the steps are attached, and the additional elements that the ladder is supplied with are handrails and legs.

The calculation of the height of such a structure from a profile pipe is carried out during the determination of the interval between the floor and the last step. The calculation is carried out with an orientation to an interval of 20-25 cm. Due to the presence of various functional features, the step-ladder can be:

The constructions of the universal type combine the functionality of a regular ladder and a step-ladder.

The frame of such products can be folding or telescopic. The presented step-ladder has a frame consisting of several sections, with each section consisting of 5-7 steps.

Telescopic structures differ in that their sections can be extended gradually. They are fixed with special latches or hooks.

The transformer stepladder can work in several positions. Such products from a profile pipe are very compact, lightweight and can easily fit even in the trunk of a car.

Almost finished stepladder

The frame of the staircase is assembled using metal shaped pipes that serve as load-bearing racks, the steps can be made of wood or a material less durable than the frame.

All connections of the structure made of shaped pipes are joined together using bolted connections.

This allows, if necessary, to quickly replace any damaged element. Some ladders made of metal-profile pipes can be made non-separable - welding is used to create them.

It should be noted that the most common and practical material for creating the described structures is aluminum or duralumin alloy. A ready-made staircase assembled by hand will have such advantages as:

Tools and materials required for work

To create a ladder with your own hands, preference should be given to aluminum or metal profile pipes. Subsequently, such a structure can be easily transported even in public transport. In addition, this metal is resistant to the harmful effects of corrosive processes and other negative environmental factors.

The profile does not need to be additionally primed and painted, and the service life of the product will depend only on the build quality. When assembling such a structure, you cannot do without:

In addition, you will need consumables such as:

  • belts or chains;
  • several rubber heels for the legs;
  • metal glue or liquid nails;
  • metal sheet from which steps and connectors will be cut;
  • metal or aluminum profile pipe.

It is necessary to clarify that the aluminum pipe has a high electrical conductivity and the finished product must not be used for the repair of high-voltage lines.

However, in everyday life, such a need does not occur so often. Aluminum conducts heat well, and in the open air it heats up several times faster than metal.

So, for example, if such a ladder is left under the sun for several hours in the summer, then it is very likely to become very hot, which will complicate the work.

A ladder made of shaped pipes is easy to manufacture, and the material is generally available and has a high margin of safety. A stepladder made of a metal profile pipe requires painting to protect it from corrosion.

Manufacturing procedure

To create a ladder from shaped pipes, it is recommended to adhere to the following sequence of actions:

  1. Prepare a metal aluminum or steel pipe and cut 4 segments of the same length from it.
  2. If the pipe is made of metal, then especially coarse rust should be removed from its surface using a grinder or a drill with a special nozzle.
  3. Hold the pipe securely in a vise and polish it to a shine with sandpaper or a special rust remover.
  4. Cut steps with the same length from pre-prepared metal sheets. If necessary, rust deposits are also removed from them.
  5. The frame begins to form with the welding of the steps. If there is no welding machine, then bolts and nuts can be used.
  6. Plugs are welded on top and bottom of the pipe, or rubber tips are put on.
  7. Beams are welded to the two remaining pipes in their lower and upper parts, the distance from which to the end of the pipe should be 10-15 cm.
  8. The frame of the supporting profile pipes is placed horizontally and a number of holes are drilled in it, in which the belts are fastened with bolts.
  9. To the part of the staircase on which the steps are not fixed, you need to weld a metal plate perpendicular to the frame. Two metal plates must be attached to the other half of the frame - the top step is welded to them from above.

In order to ensure reliable fixation, cuts are formed at the level with the base plate, which will act as a lock.

Self-made stepladder (video)

Making other types of ladders

Some structures cannot always be conveniently transported disassembled. To give the structure solidity, the part on which the steps are located is made somewhat longer.

At a distance of 10-15 cm from the highest step in the profile pipe, a special gap is drilled and cut.

The ends of the halves are inserted into it without steps. These parts are milked and flattened. After that, a through hole is drilled in the frame, and the structure section is fixed with a lock nut.

In order to assemble a transformer step-ladder, you should first carry out a design calculation, and then perform the following steps:

  1. 8 pieces of pipes are cut with the same length.
  2. Steps are cut from a sheet of metal. You can set any step size.
  3. The steps are fixed so that on both sides of the sections they are located at the same distance from each other.
  4. Fitting is done and the sections are connected using locking mechanisms.
  5. The stepladder is primed and painted.

It is worth noting that the load on the locking mechanisms of the transformer step-ladder is in most cases quite high, therefore, it is necessary to form a welding joint between the structural elements with the utmost quality.

To create a transforming staircase, you will need the same set of tools and materials as for the classic analogue of the design, but instead of belts, stop mechanisms will be used.

The assembly technology of the sliding-type ladder is practically no different from the installation algorithm of the two previous types.

All bearing sections are made according to the transformer principle and are connected to each other by means of sliding mechanisms. In this case, the outermost two sections are interconnected according to the principle of an ordinary stepladder.

Diy ladder (stepladder) from a profile pipe

How to make a ladder with your own hands from a profile pipe?

For various works and household chores on a suburban area, a folding step-ladder, assembled from a profile pipe with your own hands, can be useful.

The structure as a whole will be quite strong and lightweight. What is needed for its manufacture and what type of ladder is better to choose?

Use at home and in the countryside

The stepladder is used to get to high inaccessible places: chandeliers, wiring under the ceiling, the second floor of a building, etc. But this is only its primary role, and its secondary role is the ability to be at a height without much discomfort and perform work without the risk of falling.

To ensure this, the ladder has 4 support points, which distribute the total weight of the structure and the user.

The design of the ladder itself may have some differences that will be useful in a given situation:

  1. Standard A-shaped stepladder. It has 4 supports, a leg lock and an upper small platform. Convenient for work at low heights.
  2. Folding A-shaped stepladder. Unlike the first option, it can be folded into a ladder, increasing its maximum possible height. In the normal state, it is still stable, but in the folding one you can reach an object that is very high.
  3. Transformer - the structure is a multifunctional model that can be used both as a staircase and as part of an interior. A very expensive option, although it has a practical application in everyday life.

Of these three options, it is worth choosing one that is most suitable, and then follow the instructions.

Necessary for work

In order to make your own ladder, you will need materials and a drawing. The very first thing is to get the blueprints. The technical documentation for the first two options for stepladders is quite simple and does not contain any big tricks, but assembling a transforming model on your own is already a challenge to yourself. For the first time, it is better not to overdo it and choose something more or less simple.

The purpose of the work is a metal step-ladder, which will be convenient to use. To lighten the structure, it is better to make it from a profile, and for this, square pipes are useful. Also for work you will need bolts, nuts, several metal strips and hinges.

We decided on the material, and from the tools you will need:

  • drill with a drill for soft metal;
  • welding machine;
  • set of wrenches.

Depending on the selected drawing, everything you need is collected and work begins.

Why is it best to assemble a ladder from a profile pipe? Here are some reasons:

  • the hollow tube structure will be quite light;
  • the profile is quite strong and is able to withstand a heavy load without deformation;
  • it is cheap stuff;
  • square pipes are easy to process - drill holes in them, cut off unnecessary parts.

Double-sided and one-sided version

To make a standard A-shaped double-sided metal step-ladder you will need:

  • 4 pipes made of square metal of the same size;
  • bolts;
  • metal strips from a profile for steps;
  • welding machine or drill with fasteners;
  • level.

The work process is as follows:

  1. Having 4 blanks of the same size, you need to fold them in pairs and mark the places where the steps will be attached.
  2. Then there are 2 design options: sharp and flat.
  • sharp - 2 tubes will be connected at their ends using a bolted connection;
  • flat - tubes are screwed to a rectangular workpiece.
  1. Regardless of the option chosen, it is worth starting to place the steps. Each plank should be positioned so that when installing the stepladder, the steps are at a slope of 90 °, a level will come in handy here. This should be taken into account in the selected drawing, where the angle of the supports is indicated.
  2. Then you can connect the steps to the supports in 2 ways: bolted or welded. Which of the options is more convenient is worth choosing.
  3. First you need to fix 2 strips - the lower and upper, and then the rest, moving towards the middle.

The one-sided version of the ladder eliminates the installation of steps on one side. Instead, 1-2 planks are installed at different levels.

Folding ladder

A homemade stepladder, which also folds out, is a great thing for construction. The steps for assembling it are similar to the first option, only here you need to make a hinge connection between 2 separate ladders and a metal retainer that will fix the structure when unfolded. All this is done only according to the selected drawing.

This video shows the process of making a staircase from a profile pipe:

A hand-made iron step-ladder will definitely come in handy on the farm.

In order for the structure to be stable and functional, it is worth choosing a proven working drawing, as well as choosing high-quality profiles. Doing everything according to the instructions, as well as consulting with the masters, you can do really good things with your own hands.

Do-it-yourself stepladder from a profile pipe: how to do it right

For various works and household chores on a suburban area, a folding step-ladder, assembled from a profile pipe with your own hands, can be useful. The structure as a whole will be quite strong and lightweight.

Homemade profile ladder

Structurally, this type of ladder is very similar to those that can be found today in almost any hardware store. The only difference is that it is made not of aluminum, but of a shaped pipe.

  • electric welding;
  • grinder;
  • drill;

The article is about nothing, a lot of water, little specifics. Anyone who knows how to work with a grinder and welding does not need it. And the office plankton will go and buy a stepladder in lerouamerlen or obi.

Metal ladder stepladder from a profile pipe: video instruction

Drawings and video master class on how to create a ladder from a profile pipe with your own hands.

We make a step-ladder for the house with our own hands

A hand-made stepladder will become an indispensable assistant in everyday life

Stepladders are folding ladders that are indispensable for performing various works in a city apartment, in a private house and in the country. These ladders are comfortable, stable, compact and practical. A do-it-yourself stepladder can be made from scrap materials. The manufacturing process is simple and within the power of everyone. At the same time, a self-made step-ladder will not be inferior in functionality and reliability to industrial designs.

Stepladders, their types and features

How to make a ladder with your own hands? First you need to choose the most suitable folding structure model, then choose the material from which the step-ladder will be made with your own hands.

In terms of appearance and functionality, these stairs are conventionally divided into three groups:

  • Universal. Universal structures are distinguished by the fact that they can also be used as a conventional (attached) ladder structure. Such ladders are divided into folding and telescopic.

Universal folding step ladder

  • Telescopic models are assembled from several sliding sections, which are securely fixed with hooks or automatic locks (latches). These stairs can be very high.

Telescopic ladder overview

  • Transformer step-ladder is a modern, universal, multifunctional step-ladder. The transformer consists of sections that are connected with hinges. The hinges allow you to easily and quickly change the position of the sections and securely fix the selected position. The transformer can easily take the form: a classic model, a ladder with a console, a convenient building platform, a regular (extension) ladder.

The stepladder is made of combined materials

Example drawing of a ladder

For the bowstring of a wooden step-ladder, beams are used (approximately 5x5 cm), for the steps - a board (3-4 cm thick). It is necessary to mark and cut off the bowstring beams of the required length. They should match the height of your ladder.

After you have cut off the desired length of the beam, you can start making steps

The stepladder will be more stable if the bottom is wider than the top.

If an additional platform is provided in the construction of the stairs, then it is made of the same material as the steps. The second half of the stepladder (supporting) is also assembled, only instead of steps to strengthen the strength, crossbeams are used, nailed across or diagonally (different options are possible here).

One of the options for attaching the second half of the ladder

Bolts are used to securely connect all parts of a wooden structure, and hinges are used to ensure the mobility of its parts, and spacer mechanisms or stops are used to fix the position.

In most cases, the two halves of the ladder are connected by hinges.

The limiter is needed so that the legs of the stepladder do not part.

Metal bars are needed to make the ladder more durable

To protect against decay, the wooden elements of the ladder must be covered with an antiseptic compound that creates a water-repellent film. You can also varnish the product without affecting the metal parts of the structure.

Metal constructions

A metal step ladder can be made from pipes or profiles. When working with metal, great care must be taken and all sharp edges must be carefully processed after cutting.

To protect hands and feet from injury during the operation of a folding metal structure, you can use special plastic or rubber plugs.

Metal products can be collapsible (detachable connections are used for installation) or monolithic (welded). A welded joint is usually used for a steel structure made of pipes and angles.

Stepladder made of steel pipe with welded connection

To make a metal step ladder, you will also need a drawing. When working on the design of a metal ladder, it is worth making one part of it longer, which will allow you to form comfortable handles on top and make it easier to fix the hinges without compromising the strength of the structure.

A metal profile of rectangular cross-section is the best option for installing a folding ladder. But a product made of steel pipes and corners turns out to be quite heavy, which is not very practical, especially for home use.

Stepladder made of metal profile

To make a stepladder, you need a metal profile (section about 20x40 mm). The length of the profile must correspond to the calculated height of the ladder.

After cutting all the necessary parts, be sure to carefully finish the edges. The necessary holes for bolted connections are drilled in the metal. The hinges are installed in the same way as in wood products. As a limiter, you can use a pipe segment secured with movable metal bolts.

Drill holes to connect the two halves of the ladder with the hinges

It is advisable to provide special anti-slip pads on the steps of a metal structure. Now you know how to make a ladder that best suits your needs.
