Thermal insulation methods for wooden ceiling structures

Numerous technologies in wooden houses are divided into two groups according to the place of installation of the insulation:

  • from the side of residential premises (from the inside);
  • from the attic side (outside).

Both approaches have their merits and demerits. So, insulation of the ceiling in a wooden house from the inside will save money, but will reduce the useful volume of living quarters, and insulation laid outside will require additional protection from mechanical damage and more powerful hydro and vapor barrier, which will entail an increase in the cost of insulation.

In the classic version, the thermal insulation layer has the following structure:


  • external vapor barrier;
  • insulation material;
  • lathing;
  • internal vapor barrier;
  • sheathing.

How to insulate the ceiling?

All materials that can be used to insulate the ceiling in a wooden house are divided into three groups:

  • free flowing;
  • soft;
  • solid.


The first group is used only for external insulation. The other two are used in both methods.
The most popular representatives of each of the groups, respectively, are:

  • sawdust;
  • mineral wool;
  • Styrofoam.

The easiest way to insulate is to finish the ceiling from the inside with foam. Its advantages include:


  • relatively low material cost;
  • light weight;
  • unique steam and moisture repellent properties;
  • ease of installation;
  • environmental friendliness.

Stages of work

First, a waterproofing layer is attached to the hemmed ceiling between the beams. For this, you can use glassine, plastic wrap.

Foam plates are fixed on top of the waterproofing using special glue. After applying the adhesive to the insulation, wait 1 - 2 minutes and press it firmly against the ceiling. Plates are mounted end-to-end. If there are gaps between thermal insulation products, they are sealed with polyurethane foam. It is better to additionally fix the insulation on the surface using self-tapping screws with washers of a large diameter (10-14 mm.).


After installing the plates, a layer of glassine or other vapor barrier material is again laid. The whole process is completed by cladding and decorative finishing of ceiling structures.

Sawdust

Preparation of the composition

Better to use medium-sized shavings. Thirse will not work for insulation. Its volume contains very little air. The sawdust should not be fresh. Raw materials are treated with antiseptic and antifungal compounds. The simplest solution to this problem is to soak wood chips in a solution of copper sulfate, after which it should be thoroughly dried.

The required volume of sawdust is equal to the planned volume of the insulation layer, the recommended thickness of which is 20 centimeters.

The process of preparing a cement-sawdust mixture consists of the following stages:


  • in a spacious container (a trough with sides 25-30 cm) prepare "cement milk" by mixing water with cement in a ten to one ratio, and mix thoroughly;
  • sawdust is added to the resulting mixture, which, during the mixing process, should be evenly covered with a layer of solution.

Surface preparation

Before proceeding with the manufacture of insulation, you should prepare the area for its application. This preparation includes the following steps:

  • dismantling the attic floor;
  • cleaning the space between the lags from debris and other foreign objects;
  • treatment of all available structures of wooden floors with antifungal and antiseptic agents;
  • laying a vapor barrier carpet (as insulation, you can use a dense polyethylene film laid with an overlap on the logs).

Applying insulation composition

Further, the produced cement-sawdust mixture is scattered over the overlap area and lightly rammed. The insulation must be evenly distributed between the floor joists. After complete drying, the resulting coating can be walked on.


One of the main advantages of this method of ceiling insulation is the low cost of materials. First of all, this concerns sawdust, which, having tried, can be purchased for free.

Mineral wool

A popular method of insulating a wooden ceiling is also using mineral wool. In terms of its thermal insulation characteristics, this material is superior to polystyrene. The installation process is relatively straightforward.

Vapor barrier layer

A vapor barrier is laid on the outer surface of the ceiling, freed from the coating, free of debris and foreign objects. As with sawdust, a thick plastic wrap will do.


Install it with an overlap of about 10 cm. The seams are glued with tape.

Mineral wool is produced in slabs and in rolls. When using roll material, the cotton wool is unwound along the beams.

Choosing a thermal insulation material

Any insulation available on the modern market is suitable for this insulation option. Most often they use plate models: expanded polystyrene plates, mineral wool in mats. You can use expanded clay. Polyurethane foam is very popular today, which is applied to insulated surfaces in the form of foam. It polymerizes under the influence of air, turning into a durable layer with high thermal performance.

By the way, the main characteristic that determines the insulation is thermal conductivity. The lower the value, the better, the smaller the thickness of the material to be laid.

It all depends on what kind of insulation will be used. If mineral wool or expanded polystyrene plates are used (which is inexpensive), then on a prepared basis it is necessary to make a crate. It's just that wooden slats with a cross section of 50x50 mm are nailed to the flooring every 1 m.

The distance (1 m) is not easy to choose. This is the width of the mat of mineral wool and PP slabs. After all, the main requirement for thermal insulation processes is to create a layer without cracks and gaps, which during operation will become cold bridges. Therefore, the insulation must fit snugly against the elements of the sheathing. If from one of the edges of the structure the step between the slats is less than 1 m, then the insulation is cut to the required width.

And after that, boards are stuffed on top, because walking on a mineral wool means crushing it and reducing its strength and thermal performance. In this regard, foam is stronger, plus it does not absorb moisture. But it is not recommended to walk on it either, so you will have to lay OSB boards or plywood sheets on top, or boards.

As for expanded clay, it is simply scattered over the surface of the flooring, after having filled the restrictive elements along the perimeter of the latter. It can be all the same slats, stacked vertically in three rows. The thickness of the expanded clay layer of 150 mm is more than sufficient.

Polyurethane foam is the best of all. But it has two drawbacks:

  1. It costs much more than all other materials.
  2. For its application, special equipment is required, consisting of two cylinders and a compressor, plus hoses with a nozzle.

Before insulating a wooden ceiling with polyurethane foam, you need to weigh the pros and cons. The only thing to add is that manufacturers now offer mini installations. They include two cylinders in which the insulation components have already been pumped under pressure, that is, the compressor is no longer needed. The equipment weighs 30 kg.

Apply polyurethane foam in a small layer (within 2-3 cm). In air, the colloidal mass immediately solidifies and becomes strong. So you can walk on such a warm floor in the attic without fear of damage. In this case, the heat-insulating layer is a continuous coating without seams, gaps.

Economical option

You can save a little on insulation of the ceiling outside. To do this, a rough ceiling is stuffed along the lower edges of the load-bearing beams. Edged boards, plywood sheets, OSB, fiberboard are used. If you look at the ceiling surface from above, then it will be a structure of large cells. They will need to be filled with insulation, having previously laid with a waterproofing material.

Its task is not to let moisture pass towards the insulation from the side of the attic, but to allow excess moisture to leave the space between the beams. The most important thing is to properly install the vapor barrier. There are marks on the film that show which side to install the material in the direction of the insulation layer. It is important not to be mistaken here.

The second option is to use mineral wool mats, one side of the panel of which is, as it were, spring-loaded. That is, if you press on it and then release it, then the edge takes its original shape. Therefore, from the side of the materials, a force will act to hold the insulation in a horizontal hanging position.

Warming with expanded polystyrene plates

This option is simpler than the previous one, because slabs of dense insulation can be glued to the plane of the rough ceiling, the elements of which are stuffed along the floor beams. You can glue with any composition: liquid nails, "Moment" and so on.

In addition, it is possible not to use additional protective layers in the form of films and membranes. Although experts assure that they should not avoid penny costs. It is better to pull the film from below. It will not only protect the thermal insulation layer from moisture emanating from the interior of a wooden house, but also wooden floor beams. And this is an increase in their service life.

The only thing that is required from the contractor is to fill in the gaps and gaps between the slabs and beams or between adjacent slabs. Many people use polyurethane foam for this. We carry out insulation

Before starting work on any of the insulation schemes, it is necessary to impregnate the bearing beams with a fire retardant to increase fire resistance, a fungicide to protect against fungus and an antiseptic that protects against decay, or a complex preparation that performs three tasks at the same time. All elements of wood construction, which will be involved in the insulation of the ceiling, are subject to processing.

Insulation from the inside of the room

In this case, we insulate the ceiling with slabs or mats. For work you will need materials:

  • Insulation.

  • Super diffusion membrane.
  • A bar made of wood, with a section of 50x100 mm.
