Design options

Before you close the battery with drywall, you should analyze the features of the placement of radiators and piping in the room. Depending on their location, you can choose one of two options for using drywall:

There is an opinion that the fastening with a cutter is not strong enough. However, when using a professional tool, the connection is not only very reliable, but also compares favorably with the absence of protruding parts, which is inevitable when using bugs.

  • The required number of horizontal bridges is installed. The more there are, the more rigid the design. For a drywall box, 1-2 is enough for each of the planes, with the exception of the front one.
  • Parts of a decorative lattice or a removable screen are attached to the frame.

It is necessary to create a solid structure, any vibration of the frame after installation is unacceptable.

  • At the final stage, gypsum plasterboard strips are cut according to the actual dimensions and fixed with self-tapping screws every 25 cm. Subsequently, the plasterboard is putty, the finishing is carried out in accordance with the general interior of the room.

Installation of false walls

It is advisable to erect a decorative wall if, in addition to masking the radiators, it is necessary to decide how to close the heating pipes with plasterboard. With this method, not so much space is lost, but the appearance of the room wins very significantly.

At the first stage, markup is done:

  • The lines for attaching the profiles are marked on the wall. They should be spaced 60 cm apart in order to join drywall sheets on them. In addition, at a distance of 30 cm from the corners, two extreme profile guides are attached.

  • Additional guides are required if there is a window on the wall: they will come in handy for fixing the slopes. It is advisable to place a couple more profiles at a distance of 10 cm on each side of the radiator - for mounting a decorative grille.

The design of the decorative wall should provide technological holes for access to taps and other parts of the pipeline for preventive maintenance or inspection. Such inspection hatches are subsequently decorated with a fine finish and become invisible in the general interior.

After marking, the frame is assembled. Its installation does not fundamentally differ from the assembly of a box or other structure made of plasterboard, so it makes no sense to give a detailed sequence of operations. The metal frame for the false wall will differ from the box design in a large number of horizontal bridges. They are needed not only for joining drywall sheets, but also for stiffening. Experts recommend installing these elements every 60 cm, securely attaching them to the posts using self-tapping screws or a cutter.

Elements cut from drywall are attached to the frame. Friends, good day.

I decided to close the battery in the kitchen with plasterboard. The kitchen area is quite large, it allows you to implement the idea without much damage to the space. And the presence of individual gas heating in the apartment and not too harsh winters allow you to lose some of the heat from the battery without affecting the overall temperature in the apartment.

To begin with, I dismantled the old window sill, and from the ceiling metal profiles I began to build a frame around the battery.

For rigidity, I additionally reinforced the long horizontal bars.

After assembling the frame, I installed the window sill, sheathed the frame with plasterboard and proceeded to puttying the structure.

After filling and cleaning, I painted the box together with the walls with water-based paint in two layers. That's what came out of it.

After that, I installed a decorative grill.

For normal heat exchange, the battery made holes in the windowsill and installed ventilation grilles.

The end result is like this.

The battery gives off heat well, warm air flows from the ventilation holes, the windows do not sweat.

For a floor-mounted structure, you need 3 lines. Two of them will define the depth, and one will define the edge of the structure.

To get a right angle, you need to fix a corner to the bottom face and draw vertical lines. Using a level, draw vertical lines until the required size is obtained. On these lines, marks are made, between which a connecting line is drawn.

After completing the drawing work, you will get a geometric figure, most often a square, sometimes a rectangle. If a support is made on the floor, it is necessary to make additional marking of the base. How the frame works: nuances

Before closing the battery with drywall, making the interior more attractive, they build a frame. It is made from 60 channel bars. For installation, you will need a variety of tools, for example, a hammer drill, scissors for cutting metal, and so on.

First, the profiles are attached, which completely adhere to the wall. Construction technology is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. A metal profile (channel) is installed to the marking line.
  2. Using a screwdriver, a small recess is made on the wall.
  3. Using a hammer drill, make a recess corresponding to the size of the attachment.
  4. A fastener, such as a dowel, is placed in the hole made.
  5. A profile is attached to an already prepared place.
  6. Self-tapping screws are used to fasten the profile.

The outlines for the metal attached to the wall should be made in 15 cm increments. Holes are immediately made for the installed profile. According to the above technology, all the necessary parts of the frame are fastened. When you need to fix a corner consisting of several elements, the necessary parts are trimmed with scissors for cutting metal.

After the complete installation of all parts attached to the wall, the depth of the frame is made. First, the necessary parts of the profile are prepared, they are cut into the required size. The edges of the parts at the folds are trimmed by a few centimeters. Then the middle of the profile is bent down, the sides are cut to the size of the width of the profile flange. At an angle of 90 degrees, to the edges of the longest parts, the segments made are fixed. The final operation for making the frame is to connect all the frame parts to each other.

The frame must be strong and not wobbly. If this is the case, then the fastening is poorly done or too few additional small elements have been installed.

Usually the window sill is installed so that it does not overlap the battery and hangs over it no more than 2/3 of its width. It is more aesthetically pleasing if the box fits completely in width under the window sill, in which case it will have to be changed. And it is possible that such a decision will lead to the appearance of frost and ice on the window - the warm air from the radiator will not blow over the glass, and it will freeze over. This will not happen if there are triple-glazed windows or energy efficient glasses are installed in them.

There are no strict requirements in the regulatory documents for placing the battery under the window - it is important that its edge does not go beyond the border of the opening from the side of the riser pipe. But when installing it, they try to make it so that it is located symmetrically relative to the window. So the installation of drywall boxes under the battery must observe symmetry with respect to the vertical axis of the window. Therefore, first it is necessary to find and mark on the wall and on the floor the center of the window opening, from which the marking should be carried out.

If the battery is not installed under the window, then its center will be the axis of symmetry of the box.
The markup sequence is as follows:

  1. Beat off a line perpendicular to the wall on the floor in the center of the opening or battery;
  2. From this line, the depth of the frame is measured without taking into account the sheathing;

How to fix the battery to drywall - marking stage

The markup of the future structure is carried out using:

  • measuring tool- tape measure, ruler, corner;
  • descriptive instrument- a simple pencil, marker;
  • precision instrument- building or laser level.

During this stage, it is advisable to adhere to the exact dimensions, limited to whole centimeters. Millimeters are used only in the case of a particularly precise design, for example, for an established interior project.

Before you sew up the battery with drywall and get rid of its unpleasant appearance, you need to decide for which method of termination to carry out the marking:

  • a box is a simpler and faster method of work (only the area of ​​the battery is sealed and, literally, 12-20 cm outside of it);
  • wall - a more time-consuming method (the wall with the radiator installed is completely sealed; if the heating device is installed near the window, slopes must be made).

In terms of the volume of work, the termination of batteries according to the first method is simpler: less material is used and a small number of construction processes are carried out. In the second case, even fewer construction processes are used, but more material is used.

Radiator box

When installing a box, the structure takes up little space, covering a little more space than the radiator itself. The depth of such a box depends on the width of the heater (most radiators are narrower than batteries with metal plates).

Note! The edges of the structure must protrude at least 10 cm beyond the edge of the radiator. Otherwise, it will not be possible to install a removable screen on the front side.

Instructions for marking the box:

  • Depending on the required position of the structure, a horizontal strip is drawn. If the box hangs, measure the distance from the floor and draw a marking line using a level. If the structure rests on the floor, there will be 3 lines (two at the edges - depth, one front - the edge of the structure).
  • It is necessary to set a corner to the bottom edge and draw vertical marks - we achieve a right angle. Using the level, we bring the vertical lines to the required size.
  • The same marks are marked on the vertical lines, between which a connecting segment is drawn.

The result should be a square or rectangle (in the case of support on the floor, additional marking of the base).

How to close batteries with drywall - wall method

Analyzing the room and thinking how to close the radiators and pipes with plasterboard and do it correctly, the decision to install an alternative wall comes naturally.

The essence of the solution - together with the radiator, the entire surface to which it is attached is covered. This method is wasteful, since you can get by with small amounts of material by arranging a point box. But the wall is the only way to completely hide the heating device from the room with your own hands.

For the wall device, the frame is built to the entire height of the room:

  • With the help of the level, several vertical lines are drawn on the base for the frame. Step - 60-100 cm. Mandatory lines for profiles in the corners of the room.
  • From each vertical line it is necessary to draw a continuation to the floor. For this, a corner is used. The depth of the floor lines is equal to the width between the main wall and the alternate wall.
  • Similar to the floor ones, lines are drawn on the ceiling - of equal depth and strictly parallel.
  • The last marking lines are drawn above and below the heater, at a distance of 7-10 cm.

Marking is also carried out on the sides of the radiator - along the perimeter of the device, profiles are needed into which a removable screen will be installed. But to get rid of unnecessary work, you can draw the main markings (which are for the entire height of the room) directly on the sides of the radiator.

Metal frame under the wall

Before you close the heating battery with plasterboard, decorating the interior of the room with this, you need to arrange a frame. For its construction, channel-shaped metal profiles with a width of 60-70 mm are used.

In total, in the process of doing the work you will need:

  • profiles - as the main frame;
  • screws (40-60 mm) - fastening the structure;
  • dowels (40-60 mm) - fastening in the surface;
  • metal scissors - for cuts, if necessary, bending metal;
  • pliers, screwdriver, drill or hammer drill - an auxiliary tool.

The profiles that are attached to the wall are attached first.

  • a metal profile is attached by either side or center to the marking line;
  • a small outline is left on the wall with a screwdriver;
  • a perforator makes a recess for the size of the mount;
  • a dowel is inserted into the hole made;
  • a profile is attached to the prepared place;
  • the screw is fastened.

After adhering the metal to the wall, the outlines are made in 15-25 cm increments. The holes are prepared immediately for the entire profile.

All the necessary parts of the frame are attached by the described process. In the case of fixing a corner of two elements, you need to trim the necessary parts with metal scissors.

When the parts that are attached to the wall are installed, go to the depth of the frame:

  • we cut parts of the profiles of the required size;
  • cut both edges of the element at the bend by 4-5 cm;
  • bend the middle down, and cut the sides to the width of the profile channel shelf;
  • we attach the segments to the edges of the main long elements at an angle of 90 degrees towards the room.

The last part - connecting the upper and lower short parts, elements.

Note! When installing a wall covering the battery, long vertical metal elements are used, so two short ones at the top and bottom will not be enough - at least 4-5 pieces are needed.

The finished frame should represent a strong structure, not stagger. If the frame is wobbling, it means that the fastening is not of high quality, or there are not enough additional short elements.

Sheathing batteries with plasterboard

The most difficult stages of solving the question of how to close the heating battery with drywall and not deprive the room of heat are left behind. If everything is prepared, installation is a simple procedure.

Fastening of drywall is carried out according to the following method:

  • a sheet of material is attached to the metal base;
  • a descriptive tool marks the place of the trim - this is how the material is marked into the necessary pieces;
  • the prepared part is attached to the corresponding part of the frame and fastened with a screw.

The pitch of the screws when fastening the material in the battery box is 10-15 cm, an example of the location of the fasteners can be seen in the photo above.

It is better to prepare and fasten one part of the material, if you cook everything at once, you can make a mistake because of the corners protruding in some places.

Note! When screwing in the screw, it is important to feel the measure - if you put the fastener too deep, you can damage the front side of the drywall.

A removable screen must cover the radiator for ventilation and heat transfer to the room. The first part, the inner one, is attached to the metal even before working with drywall. Then the main material is arranged, and the last step is to put on the removable, external, part of the screen.

Dealing with the question of how to close the battery in the room with drywall and not spoil the interior, it is important not to use radically new colors. The best option is to arrange a box or an alternative wall in the general colors of the room. But first you need to prepare the surface for final finishing.

The finishing process proceeds according to the following principle:

  • Sealing joints between pieces of plasterboard (see also the article on plastering plasterboard joints). To do this, a small piece of a serpyanka mesh is applied to the seam, then the joint is covered with putty.
  • Sealing the fastener. It is carried out according to a similar method - serpyanka and putty.

With the help of spatulas, the entire surface of the product is putty, whether it is a box or a wall. When the mixture dries, it is leveled by sanding it with fine sandpaper.

The final stage is the finishing of the product - often it is painting or wallpapering. It is better to use the material that is more in line with the general interior of the room, if its price, of course, is within the projected budget.

Is it possible with this method of masking heating units to reduce the loss of heat transfer? How to cover the battery with drywall so that it does not affect the room temperature?

The choice of the type of construction and features of the markup

There are two main ways to hide the heating unit behind drywall: erect a box around the radiator or hide it behind a decorative wall.

The choice of this or that technique depends on the floor plan and the location of each specific radiator.

The first method, a box, is relevant if the battery is on the surface of a flat wall. It is easy and quick to install the box with your own hands - this method is economical, since the radiator itself is closed directly, which means that the space of the room suffers less.

The design of the box assumes that its edges will protrude from the battery by about 10 - 20 centimeters on each side. The specific parameters of the duct depend on the size of the radiator.

Important note: the front wall of the structure must be at least 10 centimeters from the front of the battery, otherwise it will be impossible to install a removable screen on the front panel.

The box is of two types: it can either hang on the wall (there will be a distance to the floor under the box), or it can stand on the floor. The choice of design depends only on the design solution in a particular interior.

After determining the design of the box, you can start marking the wall.

If the box is to hang on the wall, then first we set aside the desired size from the lower edge of the radiator and draw a line along the level indicating the bottom of the structure.

Then, using a corner, we draw the side walls of the box at a distance from the edges of the battery. Lay on these lines the same segments that go beyond the upper border of the radiator, and connect with a horizontal line. All lines must be checked with a level.

If the box will stand on the floor, then you need to start from the upper border of the structure, and already from it, lay the side walls.

Plus, on the floor, it will be necessary to mark the parameters of the base of the box so that the front border protrudes beyond the front surface of the battery.

The layout of many apartments is designed in such a way that heating units are installed in niches under the windows. In this case, it is worth covering the battery with a second type of construction, an alternative wall.

However, you may want to completely change your interior and get rid of the type of batteries altogether. Then it will be necessary to erect a plasterboard wall to the entire height and width of the room.

This method of hiding pipes with drywall will require high costs in terms of material consumption, but only it will allow you to completely hide the radiator from the eyes.

You need to start preparing the frame by marking the vertical lines for the metal profile. It is imperative to fix the profile posts in the corners of the wall. Along the entire length of the wall, the spacing of the racks should be from 60 to 100 centimeters.

To avoid additional metal profiles, it is recommended to place two vertical posts on the sides of the sewn-on radiator at a distance of 10 - 12 centimeters from the edge of the battery.

The vertical lines should continue in projection onto the floor and ceiling, the depth of the top and base should be equal and, in centimeters, be the depth of the radiator plus 10 centimeters.

The final stage of the marking is to draw two horizontal lines 10 centimeters above and below the radiator borders.

Frame device, structure installation and finishing works

Before closing the radiators with drywall, it is necessary to equip the frame of the structure. To mount the frame with your own hands, channel metal profiles are used, the width of which is 60 - 70 millimeters.

First, you need to fix the profiles that will be adjacent to the wall. The technology is as follows: the profile is attached to the marked wall and the wall is marked with a screwdriver for future fasteners, which should be at a distance of 15 - 25 centimeters from each other.

The basting is deepened with a puncher, based on the size of the dowels used for fastening. The dowels themselves are inserted into the holes obtained, the profile is attached to the wall and fixed with screws.

When all the profiles are fixed on the wall, they begin to create the volume of the frame. To do this, the metal profile is cut into the desired lengths, the resulting parts of the profile are cut from both edges by 4-5 centimeters at the bend.

The middle part is folded down, the extreme parts are cut, based on the width of the profile. Sections of the profile are fixed to vertical drains along their edges at right angles.

If you need to sew up the entire wall along its height, then such volumetric elements need to be fixed in increments of 50-60 centimeters along the entire length of the vertical racks.

Last but not least, another row of vertical posts is attached, which will form the basis of the alternative wall, and to which the drywall will be attached.

An important condition: the frame of the structure designed to close the pipeline must be strong and stable, and in no case should it stagger.

Plasterboard sheets are attached to the mounted frame with screws, the distance between which should be 10-15 centimeters.

You need to screw in the fasteners carefully so as not to damage the material.

After sheathing the frame with plasterboard, a "window" remains in the structure, through which the radiator is visible. A removable screen is mounted in it, which ensures the flow of hot air from the battery into the room.

The inner part of such a screen should be fixed in the frame even before working with gypsum plasterboard sheets, and the outer part is fixed after the main installation work on the structure for sheathing the heating battery with plasterboard.

Preparation of a rough surface for finishing materials is carried out according to the following technology.

First, with the help of a serpyanka and putty, the seams between the drywall sheets and the screws with which the drywall were attached to the frame are sealed.

Then the entire structure of the box or wall is putty. After drying, the surface is rubbed with fine emery. Everything is ready for finishing: painting or wallpapering.

Radiators unsuitable for modern renovation should not spoil the interior design. With the help of simple installation technologies, it is not difficult to independently change the appearance of an apartment by hiding heating pipes and radiators behind drywall.

Note! All markings should be applied using a level. Otherwise, it will be very problematic to create an even and correct design.

  • if the box will stand on the floor in a room or kitchen, then you need to draw three lines: two on the sides (depth) and one that will connect them (the front edge of the structure);
  • a square should be attached to the lower edge of the device and vertical lines should be drawn along the wall at right angles. They should be brought up using a level;
  • above the battery, these lines must be connected with a horizontal segment.

If everything was done correctly, then at the end of the markup you will receive a rectangle or a square (depending on the length of the radiator). If the box will be on the floor, for example in a kitchen, then the markings on it should reflect its base.
When deciding to close the radiator with a plasterboard wall in order to hide the pipe, the markings are done as follows:

  • markup is drawn from floor to ceiling. Vertical lines are marked on the wall. The distance between them is half a meter or a whole meter. Don't forget to use the level;
  • the vertical line with the help of a corner is extended to the floor. The distance between them depends on the planned distance from the battery;
  • similar markings are made on the wall. Lines are drawn strictly opposite to the floor ones and parallel to them;
  • then draw two lines above and below the radiator. In this case, you need to step back 10 cm;
  • on the right and left sides of the heater, lines are also drawn for the profile.

Stages of installation work

Finishing the battery with plasterboard (or any other finishing material) with your own hands is possible only after the completion of the preparatory work. When the markup is ready, you can start mounting the profile frame. For this you need:

  • first, you should fix the profiles that should be located on the walls;
  • marks are made in the wall with a screwdriver, and the necessary holes are drilled with a perforator along the entire length of the profile. Dowels are inserted into them;
  • press the profile to the holes and screw them with screws. Mounts must be installed every 15-25 cm;
  • further, by analogy, you should fix the guides that are adjacent to the wall;
  • after that, you need to install the profiles in the depth of the structure. To do this, they should be cut into suitable segments and attached to long guides that run vertically;
  • we connect the profile from above and below with long segments.

Finished frame

After creating the frame, you can proceed to fastening the material. Plasterboard finishing involves the following actions:

  • we attach sheets to profiles and make notes in the places of the cuts;
  • cut the sheets into the desired pieces;
  • we fasten them to the frame with screws. The interval between them should be 10-15 cm;
  • to create even and neat corners, use an aluminum corner and putty.

At the end of the installation work, the plasterboard box is ready for final finishing. It can be painted, wallpapered or tiled.
Installation of a plasterboard wall frame involves the use of longer profiles that will run vertically. In all other respects, installation work is carried out in a similar way.
You can sew up any heating device using drywall with your own hands. To do this, you only need to correctly markup and carry out installation. Thanks to this, your battery will be hidden from view, while it will continue to heat the room, as before.
