How to glue a skirting board to an uneven ceiling. How to glue the ceiling plinth in the corners: do it right

Ceiling plinth or molding is a product for framing the joint between the wall and the ceiling. Framing allows you to correct the imperfections of the cladding, close the technical gap and give the interior a solid look. Styrofoam moldings have earned popularity for many advantages, and knowing what and how to glue a foam ceiling plinth, a home craftsman will quickly cope with the work without the help of specialists.

Features and Benefits of Styrofoam Ceiling Skirting Board

The basis of the product is extruded polystyrene foam. The material allows you to create lightweight products with various textures.

The main advantages of lamellas:

  1. Aesthetic appeal. The moldings look beautiful and bring a certain chic to the interior.
  2. Budgetary. The price of parts is affordable for any buyer.
  3. Ease of installation. Light weight and ease of fastening allow you to do all the finishing work yourself.

Despite the fact that foam is inferior to other materials in strength, moldings have a number of undeniable advantages:

  • Versatility. Styrofoam is well mounted on any base and will hide the unevenness of the wall.
  • Long service life. In rooms with normal temperatures, the foam fillet will last for more than a dozen years.
  • Impervious to moisture. Polyfoam tolerates moisture changes well, which cannot be said about many other materials.

Extruded polystyrene foam, from which the lamellas are made, is not a breeding ground for biological life forms, so moldings can be mounted in bathrooms, kitchens and other utility rooms. In addition, the material is undemanding to maintain, the main thing is not to use abrasives, but a damp cloth is fine.

Important! Polyfoam is fragile, so the decor element should not be exposed to mechanical stress.

Skirting board mounting options

Facing with molding is made on adhesives, putty mixture or hardware. You can mount the skirting boards both on the wall and on the ceiling over the finish or base without decor. Each case has its own technological features.

Advice! Mechanical fasteners are used if the house has a suspended ceiling structure. In this case, the skirting board is mounted on the fixing strip.

Fastening to finished finishing

Can fillets be glued to wallpaper? Yes, as with any wall decor. The work algorithm in this case is as follows:

  1. A polymer adhesive composition or putty is selected.
  2. The wallpaper is tightened with masking tape so as not to stain the finished decor.
  3. The adhesive is applied to both surfaces: the baguette and the base. The strip of the mixture should be thin so that no excess protrudes after pressing the fillet.
  4. Press the plinth against the markings. If the adhesive has squeezed out, remove it immediately with a dry sponge.
  5. A white silicone ceiling molding sealant is used to seal the joints. It is better to cover cracks and joints not with a spatula, but with a finger, quickly leveling the composition and removing excess.

Advice! In order not to paint the fillets after installation with the risk of smearing the wall decor, the baseboards are painted before the installation process.

Fastening to unfinished wall

The option differs little from the first, however, it gives more opportunities for a solid installation. The base is pre-cleaned, leveled, primed and dried.

Only then the installation of the ceiling plinths is carried out:

  • A putty mixture is used, which serves as a glue and leveling compound for the wall.
  • It is better to apply the mixture pointwise, in increments of 15-20 cm. And it is better not to make a layer that is too thick so that the putty or glue does not spread.
  • The lamella is applied along the markings, pressed a little. Strong pressure is not necessary - it will damage the design and leave fingerprints on the plank.
  • Remove excess mixture, at the same time filling up cracks and joints (if putty is used).
  • The next day after installing the skirting board, seal up the remaining gaps.
  • After the putty or sealant, with which the cracks were sealed, has dried, prime the surface of the linings and paint it in a day.

Advice! It is better to start the installation of the ceiling plinth from the most uneven part of the plane or from the corner.

After installing fillets, you can glue the wallpaper or decorate the walls with another material. When gluing the wallpaper, the ribbons are cut with the expectation of a small approach to the fillet, and after gluing they are cut with a sharp knife strictly along the joint.

Ceiling or wall mounting

Where and how to glue? If this question arises, then you need to look at the place of fastening, namely, how the wallpaper or ceiling decor is glued. If the edge of the wallpaper extends onto the ceiling, then the wide part of the plinth extends onto the ceiling plane. If there is a gap between the ceiling and wallpaper, you need to glue the wide part on the wall.

Advice! The craftsmen pre-evaluate the degree of flatness of the planes, and the glue is applied to the plane that is distinguished by a large number of defects. This can prevent the fillet from snapping off the surface during operation.

Do not worry, the foam fillet will fit well on the unevenness of the surface if you choose a high-quality glue or putty composition.

Important! If work is carried out with stretch ceilings, the skirting boards are glued only to the wall. It is impossible to smear the surface that faces the stretch panel.

What to glue the skirting board and how to choose the glue

There are two mounting options: glue and putty. The peculiarity of the foam lining is that you will have to select the correct adhesive for the ceiling plinth made of this material.

Aggressive compounds can simply melt the decor, so there is little choice here:

  1. Polymer-based solutions. They are well suited for surface mounting fillets, high viscosity and fast fixing. The downside is that the polymer adhesives contain a solvent that can corrode the molding. Before buying glue, you need to read the composition and clarify for which materials the composition can be used.
  2. Liquid nails are the best adhesive for Styrofoam ceiling skirting boards. Acrylic mixtures are neutral to the material, have good adhesion to any substrate and have a long pot life.

Important! Liquid nails can be neopropylene based. The mixture has a pungent odor, emits harmful substances and corrodes foam. It is impossible to use such a composition in working with fillets.

When choosing which glue to glue the foam ceiling skirting boards, it is worth taking into account the level of evenness of the base. If the plane requires alignment, then it is better to use not glue, but a filler for the ceiling plinth. Installation on a putty will require a little more time, but then two tasks are performed at once: fixing the products in place and leveling the plane.

The composition can be made independently from any dry putty mixture, water and PVA glue. For 4 parts of dry powder, 1 part of PVA is taken, mixed and water is added so that the solution resembles thin sour cream in consistency. Too thick mixture spreads poorly, and very thin - spreads.

Important! If there are height differences up to 0.5 cm on the mounting plane, it is better to tighten it with a semi-thick putty. Small defects are hidden under a layer of semi-liquid putty mixture.

Skirting-ceiling mounting technology

To work, the master will need:

  • fixing composition;
  • sturdy table or stepladder;
  • cutting tool;
  • miter box;

Difficulties can arise when cutting products at the right angle. The miter box will help carry out the process, but it is better to make a sample from fillet scraps. The pattern will make it easier to trim, especially if the master is doing it for the first time. No experience - buy ready-made corners of the overhead type, in this case fillets are glued without trimming, and corners are mounted at the joints.

Algorithm of work:

  1. Prepare the surface: level, prime, dry.
  2. Choose the best way to glue the polystyrene ceiling plinth: glue, sealant or putty. The sealant is used by masters, since the composition dries quickly and requires experience.
  3. Start working from the corner. Then you can move in both directions or in one direction. It is more convenient to join the first parts on the floor or on the table, immediately performing a trimming. If an overlay corner is installed, it is glued first.
  4. Glue or sealant is applied to the inside of the fillet in a dotted manner. Putty - on the base.

Advice! If there are irregularities on the ceiling, it is better to spread the glue on the fillet without gaps, in an even layer - this will help to avoid cracks.

Today skirting boards are often glued to the ceiling. It is not difficult at all to screw it on, and the ceiling covering with a plinth looks more stylish. But it is necessary to file it down, dock it correctly and stick it on. Such repairs will not take much of your time.

Peculiarities

Ceiling skirting boards, they are also fillets, baguettes and moldings, are used for:

  • concealment of defects in the connection of the wall and ceiling. After all, it is much easier to glue the fillet than to align the corners;
  • decor of the beveled line of wallpaper;
  • smoothing corners in order to transform the room;
  • hiding wires and other communications.

Modern skirting boards are made of various materials, but regardless of this, the length is standard for all types - two meters, therefore, with a greater distance of the curb, it is necessary to join the strips.

Gluing ceiling skirting boards is not at all as easy as it might seem at first glance. If you do not take into account the peculiarities of the material, the adhesive, the strips are not accurately cut correctly, the result can be disastrous: the parts will fall off, crevices will appear in the joints, and uneven corners will cut the eye. It is not difficult to glue on straight sections; beginners, as a rule, have difficulties when working with corners.

Views

Today the skirting board market is full of offers from budget foam to luxury wood.

Styrofoam skirting boards lightweight, they are distinguished by ease of installation. Their price is not high, however, its domain structure belongs to the disadvantages of foam plastic. A simple knife is suitable for cutting it. However, it should not be blunt, otherwise, instead of cutting, it will push through the foam, round particles will break out. During installation, you must be careful, because you can crush the surface by pressing firmly with your finger. After gluing, the foam must be putty and painted so that grooves do not remain on the surface, which will gradually become dirty with dust. This material is soft and cannot be washed.

Styrofoam skirting boards usually slightly more expensive than Styrofoam. They are lighter and more flexible and have a smoother surface. You also need to saw it with a sharpened knife. You can not paint, but just cover up the joints. Also, expanded polystyrene is stronger - you cannot crush its surface with ordinary pressure. The skirting boards are easy to clean with plain water.

This material is quite flexible - a 2 meter long skirting board bends at right angles, which is great for framing drywall on the ceiling.

Modern manufacturers make baguettes from duropolymer - the same expanded polystyrene, additionally processed under high pressure. Thanks to this treatment, its strength is increased.

Polyurethane skirting boards are particularly durable. They do not create dust, are easy to clean and undemanding to care for. In addition, they can be used at high humidity, that is, in bathrooms, kitchens. This type of fillets can be painted without problems. But its main advantage is flexibility. It is necessary to try very hard to break such a plinth, moreover, it does not crumble. Flexibility is essential when framing curved plasterboard structures. Also, polyurethane adheres well to many types of glue.

PVC skirting boards there are a variety of shapes, textures and colors. They have such advantages as lightness, strength and different prices. However, they do not bend, as a result of which they are more demanding on the surface. It should be perfectly flat. You will need a hacksaw for cutting, since a simple knife is indispensable here.

Plaster skirting boards- a good option for classic interiors, since gypsum is very plastic and any sophisticated decorative surfaces are made from it. They are also durable and environmentally friendly. The disadvantages include fragility and high price.

Wooden skirting boards much more expensive and more difficult to assemble than previous types. However, the appearance is much more solid and richer. Docking them is much more difficult: you will have to cut it with a hacksaw with fine teeth, and then adjust it with a file. It is impossible to make mistakes in this case, since the putty will no longer help.

Attaching them to the ceiling is also more problematic: the glue will not withstand the wood alone, so you must first drill the holes for the fasteners, and then fix the fillet itself. There is another drawback - the tree rots, and if there is a danger of flooding by neighbors, then it is better to choose a plastic border.

Adhesive selection

Having chosen fillets, you can stick to the selection of an adhesive composition. First of all, pay attention to the glue recommended by the manufacturer. However, you must also choose it taking into account the presence or absence of wallpaper.

There are different types of adhesives today. The following are suitable for our task:

  • Universal substances Are viscous transparent solutions that solidify for a long time.

The most running are called "Titanium"... The range of application of this glue is extensive, it is also suitable for fillets. It is transparent and colorless, there are no fillers in the composition. The adhesive is composed of polymers. Works well with styrofoam. Moderately toxic and safe for the skin.

Another representative of the class of station wagons - Eco-Set... It is generally similar to the Titan. The problem with these adhesives is the inconvenience associated with long hold times. Here can come to the rescue "Moment"... It has similar characteristics, but solidifies immediately. The disadvantage of this glue is its price.

  • Liquid Nails- a fairly convenient practical composition, produced in the form of tubes for construction guns. Liquid nails are preferred by many professionals. There are acrylic and neopropylene liquid nails. The former emit a mild odor, harmless to health, and are unsuitable for work in the cold. The latter are perfect for rooms and areas with high humidity. The room temperature does not play any role when working with neopropylene.

  • Acrylic sealant- a universal option, suitable even for uneven walls, because the cracks can be sealed with the same sealant.

  • Adhesive putty- homemade composition of dry putty, PVA and water. The process of making such glue begins with the fact that the putty is poured into a container together with PVA glue in a ratio of 4 to 1, that is, 4 parts of putty and 1 part of PVA glue. After that, everything is mixed with a gradual, uniform addition of water. As a result, a mixture is formed, homogeneous and thick in consistency. Then, for about ten minutes, this mixture is infused and mixed again. After two hours, the solution is ready. The main thing is to make sure that there are no clots in it and that it is completely homogeneous.

Preparation

Fillets are often glued on top of the wallpaper, in which case it is imperative to make sure that they are glued reliably and adjust it to the standards. Then you need to start preparing the surface. It should be free of moisture, grease stains, it should be clean. It is necessary to inspect and check it for mechanical defects and irregularities, cut out all defects. If they are, then everything must be done to eliminate them, otherwise the planks will not press down and the skirting boards will bend.

One of the problematic points is trimming the skirting board from the end... Each fillet strip should be docked with the adjacent one in the corner of the room at exactly 45 degrees. To solve this problem, you need a miter box. It has slots at different angles - from 45 to 90 degrees. It is necessary to insert the molding into the miter box at an angle of 45 degrees and cut off with a knife, then smooth the ends. The lower edge of the fillet should be firmly pressed against the miter box, and the upper part should be held by hand. First you need to start cutting out the corners, and only then start adjusting the footage.

By the way, you don't have to buy wort in a hardware store, but make it yourself from improvised means, since this is a very primitive tool. You just need to put together a couple of boards at the right angle and cut out in the right place. Having made such a miter box, you can cut the planks directly on the weight, pressing the plank against the boards.

If you cut the corner incorrectly, you have to cut it again, so the bar will become shorter, that is, there will be a gap in the ceiling. In order to facilitate the whole process, you can buy special corners that are placed on top right at the docking point. However, they are not cheap enough.

So, the following tools are needed:

  • a hacksaw for metal, a clerical or construction knife will help cut the material;
  • pencil and ruler;
  • miter box;
  • brush, spatula and mixing container (when using putty);
  • rags and brushes to moisten the ceiling when applying putty;
  • stepladder or some other support.

How to glue?

Skirting boards are glued in two ways: over the wallpaper or before gluing the wallpaper onto a leveled primed surface. The second method is priority, but more labor-intensive. When replacing the wallpaper in the second case, it will not be necessary to re-install the fillet. Also, if the walls are uneven, then it will be much more difficult to seal the holes. So it is better to start gluing wallpaper only after installing the ceiling plinths.

First you need to choose a place for gluing the first element. It is preferable to start at the corners and then work towards the perimeter. There will be no problems with straight sections around the perimeter if everything is in order in the corners.

If you have a tensioning canvas installed, then the skirting boards need to be glued only to the walls. Before this, it is advisable to close the cloth with polyethylene.

The rest of the process is the same as described above. However, when choosing skirting boards, one must be guided by the specifics of fastening the canvas. The main requirement for baguettes installed in a room with a stretch ceiling is that the lower part is much wider than the upper one. Wooden skirting boards paired with a stretch panel are excluded as the surface may be damaged.

If you are going to install lighting in the ceiling plinth, then the main thing before gluing the plinth is to start laying the wire, otherwise there are no differences.

You need to approach the gluing, making sure your hands are clean, so as not to stain the white baseboards. A thin strip of glue is applied with a gun or a spatula to the back of the fillet, the one that will be pressed against the ceiling and wall. In the version with a stretch ceiling, it is applied only to the lower one, adjacent to the wall.

After directly gluing the skirting board, you need to wait a little, then press it to the right place. Part of the glue will protrude from under the strip; it must be removed with a dry cloth. For gluing, the trimmed piece of the skirting board must be used so that it duplicates the cut profile. It is necessary to repeat this technology to the end.

After gluing, you may find gaps and holes between the planks. They are removed with a white sealant.... Perhaps you have not yet whitewashed and painted the ceiling, in which case you need to run through the glued strips with a putty. It is necessary to coat the strips with paint, and after they dry, remove the excess with fine sandpaper or a plaster sponge. After that, the ceiling will merge with the strips into a single whole and the gaps are guaranteed to disappear.

Also, after gluing and eliminating defects, you can paint the skirting boards. Painting is generally optional, but for greater visual appeal, it's still worth doing. Moreover, if the plinth is white, then it must be painted, otherwise over time it will gradually acquire a shade of unpleasant yellowness. For this, water-based, latex and acrylic dyes are usually used. Or you can use nitro paint, but in this case, the surface of the planks will have to be primed.

When the ceiling covering is ready, the last step to its decoration remains - you need a perimeter edging in the form of a baguette. At first glance, this is easy to do, attached and glued. In fact, not everyone knows how to glue a ceiling plinth. The HomeMyHome editors can help with advice, so we will immediately study this topic and learn all the secrets of masterly gluing fillets.

How beautiful it becomes
PHOTO: dekormyhome.ru

The ceiling plinth is called a baguette, frieze, fillet and is used in decorating ceilings. These products are perfectly combined with any wallpaper, ceiling coverings, plaster, painted walls and ceilings.

Skirting boards are used in almost all styles, but where they are definitely superfluous is in high-tech.

We will analyze below how to properly glue a ceiling plinth made of foam, and now we will consider what options for fillets are available, and clarify what is the point in them.

A baguette is needed if:

  • there are defects that stand out at the junction of the walls and ceiling;
  • unevenly cut wallpaper;
  • want more decorativeness;
  • the interior requires a clear outline of the perimeter;
  • I want the finish to take on a finished look.

Now let's discuss the assortment of fillets.

PHOTO: nikovera.ru

Baguette material:

  • Styrofoam: the most affordable option with light weight and easy installation. The products have a lot of advantages. They are both externally good, and moisture is not a hindrance to them, and they do not rot, and are easily cut with a clerical knife. But they also break easily from mechanical damage;
  • gypsum: very decorative products, but they are used only on perfectly flat surfaces, because gypsum is not at all famous for its flexibility. Baguettes will weigh a lot, absorb moisture, but with them the room will take on a royal look;
  • extruded polystyrene: The structure of this material is denser and smoother than that of foam. The joints are smoother and more invisible, but the cost of the models is higher than that of the foam ones;
  • wood: Wooden models are durable and beautiful, but not suitable for every interior. The cost of such skirting boards is high, and the service life is limited by the influence of humidity in the room.

How to glue the ceiling plinth correctly: glue or putty

Before considering the question of how to glue fillets, we will find out what exactly they are glued with. There are several ways, let's deal with two main ones.

How to glue the ceiling plinth to the putty

An excellent adhesive composition is the finishing putty, with which the walls were previously treated. This method is used on plastered and plasterboard walls.

An important nuance! You can glue the plinth to the putty before pasting the room with wallpaper and painting the walls and ceiling.

The fact is that if you carry out the installation already on the finished walls, then white traces of the putty mixture will remain on the wallpaper.

PHOTO: couo.ru

Preparatory work and installation

The putty is prepared as prescribed by the instructions, but reducing the volume of water by 6-10%, which will give it the desired consistency.

Installation can be started from any corner. On the inner sides of the baguette, put putty in one layer and install the element in the place allotted to it. Fixation is done by hand for 1-2 minutes.

Excess composition is likely to protrude from under the fillet and should be removed. With the resulting uneven joint, it is corrected with a solution.

Mounting with adhesive for ceiling plinths

How to properly glue a Styrofoam ceiling skirting board? It is better to use special glue here.

The choice of adhesive for ceiling plinth made of foam, polyurethane, PVC profile

For this purpose, the polymer glue "Dragon" or the more common "Titan" is purchased. The application is carried out on the inner sides by a drop method. The step between the drops is about 3-5 cm. They are applied in a checkerboard pattern on each side.

PHOTO: alloya.ru

This will transfer some of the adhesive onto the wall and ceiling. The glue strands are removed and wait 2 minutes: during this time the glue wears off, and you can press the plinth again, but you need to hold it for about a minute.

Advice! If the walls are uneven, do not be zealous by pressing the plinth: the cracks are then sealed with acrylic sealant.

You can purchase an adhesive called liquid nails. It is also applied in a checkerboard pattern on the inner edges, but the plinth is glued immediately after application.

We bring to your attention a video on how to glue foam ceiling tiles

For perfection in detail: how to shape corner and intermediate joints

How to glue a Styrofoam ceiling plinth if there are corners in the room and molding joints are formed? And the joints will be, because the length of the moldings will still not be enough. In fact, there is nothing complicated, let's study this process more closely.

How to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth correctly

How to cut a corner of a ceiling plinth correctly? It is best to do this with a miter box, which is designed for such purposes. It allows you to cut the staff at a precise angle.

PHOTO: youtube.com

For such a cut, you need to prepare the moldings themselves and a number of tools: a hacksaw for metal or a clerical knife, a miter box with a goniometer, a ruler and a pencil. If the angles are non-standard, then you will need to work with a construction knife with replaceable blades.

PHOTO: youtube.com

Unfortunately, if the angles are not straight at all, then the miter box will only help approximately, you will have to be content with constant live measurements. But still, first, two baguettes are cut, which must be joined, and then they are already adjusted with a construction blade. Processing is done on two elements at once.

How to glue skirting boards to the ceiling in corners and intermediate joints

Outside corners are more difficult, often requiring filler and abrasive processing. After that, there is nothing left to do but glue the ceiling plinth in the corner and move in a straight line.

PHOTO: ukrsmeta.ua

For the inner corners, keep in mind that the bottom will protrude above the top. In the case of the outer corner, the opposite is true.

If the plinth is glued on the left, then the cut is on the right, respectively, with the right plank, the cut will be on the left.

What to glue first: wallpaper or ceiling plinth

This question is serious and worries many. And in that, and in the other version, you need to perform the same preparatory work:

  • remove all unnecessary from the room;
  • dismantle unnecessary coatings;
  • if necessary, change the wiring;
  • make slopes;
  • align the walls.

For the rest, you need to weigh the pros and cons.

If you glue the skirting boards on the finished wallpaper, you will not be able to hide the cracks under the plaster putty or sealant.

But if you are not a master of accurate wallpaper trimming, it makes sense to just hide them under the skirting board, gluing it on top.

Tips on how to glue skirting boards to different types of ceilings

Consider the nuances of gluing ceiling moldings on stretch, plasterboard and plastered ceilings.

How to properly glue skirting boards on a stretch ceiling

How to glue a ceiling plinth to a stretch ceiling, we will tell you first of all, today it is the most popular coating.

PHOTO: vseprokley.com

If the corners are not used, you will need a miter box, in addition, a standard set of tools. Don't forget about the stepladder.

Pasting is done from any angle: it is better to mark the lower border of the plinth with a pencil. The glue is applied to the molding surface adjacent to the wall, the time set by the manufacturer is waited and you can apply it to the designated place. No glue is applied to the edge adjacent to the ceiling.

An expert's point of view

Dmitry Holodok

Technical Director of the repair and construction company "ILASSTROY"

Ask a Question

"It is always better to glue the moldings together - this will allow you to withstand the same pressure force along the entire length."

PHOTO: youtube.com

Then the tape is removed without any problems. Gradually paste over the entire perimeter. For accuracy, you will need to measure the distance to the corner in order to know which segment is needed.

PHOTO: givewhereyoulivehamptons.org
Advice! The corners are cut with a small margin, this will help if there were errors in the measurement.

When gluing moldings, glue is applied to the end of one of them. Remove excess glue immediately with a dry cloth.

On drywall

What kind of glue should be used to glue foam ceiling skirting boards if they need to be placed on drywall? The actions are generally the same as when gluing a baguette in the case of a stretch ceiling.

The molding is glued to the drywall to the wallpaper, and so that the baguette is one piece with the surfaces, all joints are coated with putty and painted to match

On a plastered surface

A few words about how to glue baguettes on a plastered surface. It is better to take not glue, but a finishing putty, applying it in a thin layer on the inner edges of the molding. But this can be done only where there is still a decorative surface finish with wallpaper, because almost indelible stains will definitely remain on the walls.

How to finish a skirting board

The baguettes under the ceiling are painted at will. This helps to achieve greater decorativeness and to mask the filler in the cracks.

PHOTO: nashaotdelka.ru

The work is carried out as follows:

  • the skirting board needs to be primed;
  • apply the first layer of paint, wait for it to dry;
  • if necessary, paint everything again.

A thin or decorated wide strip along the ceiling is an elegant completion of the renovation. It masks the junction of wallpaper and ceiling, making the transition smoother and more harmonious. Ceiling foam plinth is glued with tolerant glue, and this task is within the power of even an inexperienced master.

Preparing for repair

To fit and glue the skirting boards perfectly and quickly, you need certain tools. Fortunately, they are available in almost every household. And if something is missing, you can always buy it by spending only a few tens of rubles. So take:

  • pencil,
  • stationery cutter,
  • ruler,
  • rubber spatula,
  • roulette,
  • brush,
  • foam plinths,
  • glue.

The choice of the latter should be taken very seriously - it should not contain solvents. Otherwise, getting on the foam, the glue will simply eat through it, leaving extensive yellow streaks.

When you need to glue the skirting boards to the stretch ceiling, you will also need a special polyethylene lining - it is freely sold in any hardware store.

We carry out measurements

First of all, you need to measure the length of all the walls on which you plan to glue the skirting boards - the easiest way to do this is with a tape measure. After that, add about 10-15 cm more to each result obtained - the excess will be cut off when adjusting the corners.

Divide the resulting length by the length of one plinth to get the total number of products that will be needed for gluing. To obtain the remaining length, cut one of the skirting boards - as already mentioned, with a margin.

It is advisable to do all this work before you start gluing the skirting boards, so as not to be distracted from the installation later.

Adjusting the corners

Now let's figure out how to neatly fit the corners of the ceiling plinth. It is also advisable to do this work in advance, and then carefully lay out the skirting boards along the walls where they will be glued. This will save you a lot of time.

In general, a special tool, a miter box, can be used to adjust the outer and inner corners. Working with him is greatly simplified. However, it is not always at hand, so it makes sense to figure out how to make a fit without it. In addition, the miter box is intended for cases when the angles are precisely adjusted - 90 degrees each. Alas, this is quite rare - much more often you can see apartments with angles of 88-92 degrees. Of course, here it is no longer possible to perfectly fit the skirting boards using a standard tool. But manually - it is quite possible.

Advice
If, due to the unevenness of the corners, it is not possible to fit the skirting boards perfectly evenly, then use special nozzles that mask the gaps at the joints.

First, let's figure out the inner corners - they will be guaranteed in the room, and in an amount of at least four.

How to adjust the corners correctly:

  1. Take the skirting board and press it to the place where it will be glued. Try to keep it flat against the ceiling and wall with the same distance from the corner.
  2. Mark with a pencil - from the corner and 10-15 centimeters.
  3. Repeat step one on the second wall, making the same markings to get a crosshair.
  4. Without removing the skirting board, mark the point on the top edge where it intersects the first drawn line. Now it can be put aside.
  5. Take the first plinth again and attach it to the first wall, making a mark (also on the upper edge - this is very important!) At the intersection with the second strip.
  6. Using a ruler, draw straight lines on the baseboards connecting the points made with the edges of the opposite (lower) faces.
  7. Using a clerical knife, make an incision exactly along the lines you have drawn.

It remains only to attach both skirting boards to the corner where they will be glued. Make sure they fit perfectly together. Otherwise, you can trim it a little with a knife - defects arise due to the unevenness of the walls.

This completes the adjustment of the inner corners.

Outside corners are no more difficult to deal with than inside corners. The whole procedure is carried out in the same way: we apply the skirting boards, mark, connect the mark to the bottom edge and cut. After that, we apply them to the corner, if it turns out to be neat, then immediately proceed to the next step.

We start installation

The preparation is complete, start gluing the skirting boards to the ceiling. Some users are worried if they can be installed directly on the wallpaper. In fact, it is quite possible. The main thing is to choose white or colorless glue and apply it carefully so that it does not protrude from under the fillets. Otherwise, very unattractive stains will appear on the wallpaper.

How to glue:

  1. It is advisable to start laying from the corner, as well as measurements - this simplifies the fit.
  2. Using a brush (if necessary), apply a small amount of glue to both protruding surfaces of the skirting board. You don't need much - the foam weighs very little, so a high bond strength is not critical.
  3. Gently press the fillet greased with glue to the ceiling and wall, and then hold it for about a minute - if necessary, at this time it can be moved to drive it exactly into a corner or edge, as originally planned.
  4. After a minute, you can release the plinth - the glue has already set and will completely hold the structure.
  5. After a few hours (the longest is a day), it will gain maximum strength, and it will be impossible to tear the fillets from the ceiling.

Install the next part, fitting it as tightly as possible to the first. At the same time, try to maintain the same angle of inclination so that the illusion of solidity of the entire structure is created. Even small cracks and irregularities on a white background will be conspicuous in certain lighting conditions, spoiling the effect of the repair, in which you have invested a lot of time, effort and money.

Final finishing

Alas, even if all the work was done as accurately and correctly as possible, this still does not guarantee the perfect evenness of all the seams. The fact is that ceilings and walls are not always as smooth as we would like. What about the cracks? Of course, they need to be eliminated: dark defects will stand out especially between white foam products.

The easiest way to do this is to use a putty:

  1. Dilute a small amount so that the mixture resembles plasticine in consistency or a little thinner.
  2. Now arm yourself with a rubber spatula, put putty on it and gently walk along the entire seam. It is not necessary to specifically push the mixture into the slots - it is already evenly distributed with uniform, accurate pressure.
  3. The same can be done with rough seams left between adjacent fillets.
  4. Remove excess filler and drips immediately after finishing work with a damp, soft cloth.
  5. It remains only to wait a day or two (depending on the humidity and temperature in the room), and the putty will completely dry out and turn white. Now, even with a close inspection, it will be difficult to notice any flaws in the repair.

If, instead of standard white skirting boards, you decided to use more original ones, suitable for the color scheme of the room, then the putty will drastically stand out from the overall design. This is also not a problem - choosing the right paint, you can simply tint it. The paint adheres perfectly to the dried material, however, you may have to paint it twice - the first layer will act as a primer, and the second will give the room completeness.

How to work with stretch ceilings?

The aforementioned polyethylene pad will come to the rescue. The installation process itself is practically no different from that described earlier. But in this case, the skirting boards will have to be fixed not to the ceiling and walls, but exclusively to the walls. You can even increase the amount of glue applied (most importantly, without fanaticism!) To ensure good adhesion.

A plastic film is attached to the ceiling and after that the skirting boards are glued to the wall. The film can be removed immediately after the end of the process - it is no longer needed. The main thing is to do it carefully so that the newly glued fillets do not fall off.

As you can see, fitting and gluing ceiling skirting boards is not such a difficult process. With due care and diligence, everyone can do the job.

The quality of the ceiling finish greatly affects the appearance of the room. Therefore, they try to do everything perfectly, or very close to it. The finishing touch to the design is the ceiling plinth. They give the finish a complete and holistic look. The strips themselves are mounted on flat surfaces simply: on a special white glue, but problems arise with the design of the corners. Without knowing how to make the corner of the skirting board correctly, a lot of material deteriorates. We will tell you about how and what to cut it in the corners.

What is it made of and what is it called

The very first skirting boards on the ceiling were made of plaster. They were cast in special molds and then installed on the ceiling with mortar. Such figured decorations were called fillets. Today you can rarely see them: they are expensive, and outwardly they are almost indistinguishable from the cheaper options. And the name is almost lost.

The most popular ceiling skirting boards today are made of polyurethane or polystyrene. They are inexpensive, look great, easy to install, have a wide range of profiles and patterns. The width can be from 5 mm to 250 mm. They are used in almost any room, decorated in any style. Exception - Wooden products are most often used here - the style dictates its own terms.

There is also a similar plastic finish. It is mainly installed in bathrooms. But even in damp rooms, you can safely mount polyurethane strips - they are not afraid of dampness.

You need to cut the ceiling plinth in the corners of any material in one of the ways described below. The only exception is plastic skirting boards: you can arrange such a corner only using ready-made corners.

How and how to cut

Working with skirting boards made from different materials means using different cutting tools. When working with a wooden skirting board, it is more convenient to work with a saw on wood. All others, including plastic ones, made of polystyrene and other polymers, are better cut with a blade for metal. The result is a smoother cut, less burr. Saws are usually used when working with a miter box.

When working with polystyrene skirting boards without special devices, they cut them with a good office knife. Its blade is quite thin and even, the cut is smooth, not wrinkled. If you use a saw with polyurethane or polystyrene, do not press hard: you can wrinkle.

In general, to get used to the tool and material a little, take a piece and practice on it: cut, saw, trim. So there will be fewer problems when working.

How to get the correct angle

Most of the problems when working with skirting boards arise in the design of corners. Since the surface of the products is complex, it will not be possible to simply cut off at the desired angle: it is also necessary to cut it so that they dock and, preferably, without large gaps. There are actually several ways to make the corner of your skirting board perfect (or nearly so).

Using a miter box

If the corners and walls in the room are even, you can use a special carpentry tool - a miter box. This is an upside-down U-shaped chute with lines for cutting at 90 ° and 45 °. The part in which you need to make a gash is laid inside, a saw is inserted into the guides. The part is held in place and cut at the desired angle.

In the case of skirting boards, not everything is so simple: they must simultaneously adhere to two surfaces, therefore they must be pressed against one or the other wall of the miter box. When working with ceilings, they are pressed against the side closest to you.

The sequence of actions when finishing the outer corner, you need to make a gash at an angle of 45 degrees. Place the miter box in front of you. Trying on how the plinth will be located, determining which part of it will be attached to the ceiling. In order not to get confused and cut off the ceiling plinth correctly, put the strip that will be located on the right on the right, the one on the left on the left.

Press the part that is on the ceiling to the bottom of the miter box. The other side is closer to you and raised. Lean it on the wall of the device so that it does not stagger when cutting. That is, the front part of the skirting board turns out to be turned away from you. Do the cutting direction as shown in the photo below. By folding the two cut pieces together, you get a protruding outer or outer corner.

How to make the outer corner of a skirting board using a chair

First put the sawn-off parts in place "dry", without applying glue. If the geometry of the corner is not so perfect, you can tweak it a little with a knife. It is easier to cover small errors with a special putty.

The situation is very similar with the inner corner of the skirting board. First you try on which side will be on the ceiling, press this part to the bottom of the miter box, lean the second part on the wall closest to you and make cuts as shown in the photo below.

And again, first try on without applying glue, if necessary, slightly adjust. Then apply a thin bead of glue to both surfaces that will adhere to the wall or ceiling.

Your own version of how to use the miter box correctly is shown in the video.

How to make a corner of a skirting board without a miter box

Few people in apartments or houses have angles of exactly 90 °. Small deviations are easily corrected after fitting. But not always. Then you have to mark everything "in place" - under the ceiling.

You will need a finely contoured pencil (hard - it is not so visible on the ceiling, but leaves quite clear marks near), a small piece of plinth, a ruler and a good stationery knife if you work with polyurethane (polystyrene) baguettes or a metal saw to work with the rest of the materials.

Apply the plinth to the corner, draw along the outer edge with a pencil. Apply to the other side of the corner, also mark. You have a cross on the ceiling, the center of which marks the place where the plinths of the ceiling plinth should converge (look at the photo). Having installed a piece of plinth in the corner, which will be glued there and resting it with its end on the wall, transfer the mark to it.

How to make corners on skirting boards without using special tools

Now take a ruler and connect the edge of the skirting board with the marked mark. If you just put the plinth on the table and cut it along the line, the two parts in the corner will still not add up: the inner part will interfere. It can be trimmed later by trying on the ceiling. The second way is to set the piece to be cut on the table with the piece that will be on the ceiling. And cut along the line, but holding the knife at an angle of about 45 °. It will still need to be corrected, but much less (and less likely to make a mistake).

Repeat the same operation with the second bar. Put it against the desired wall, rest the butt against the adjoining wall, mark the place where the cross is drawn, draw a line and then cut it off. Correction Carried out "dry" without applying glue.

You repeat exactly the same steps for the outer (protruding) corner. Now you know another way to make a corner of a ceiling plinth, and without a scaffold or other special devices.

With decorative corners

There is one more, simpler way. For skirting boards made of polyurethane or polystyrene, use ready-made, factory decorative corners. They are installed in a corner, strips are glued to them closely. It is very easy to cut them if necessary: by a few millimeters with an ordinary clerical knife.

How to join in corners

If the installation of the first corner is completed, we can assume that you have already learned almost everything. "Almost", because you still need to learn how to join the corners and cut the planks to length. When some part is already glued and there is a small distance to the corner, how not to be mistaken with the length? The answer is simple: leave some stock.

At first, you can cut a piece 10-15 cm longer: it will be possible to redo it several times if something does not work out right away. Then you make a corner in the way described above, try it on dry, adjust everything so that the result suits you. Only then can you attach the already cut strip to the corner and mark the place to which it can be shortened. The trim should be exactly 90 °. It is not necessary to use a miter box. Just try to place the knife (hacksaw) perpendicular to the surface.
