Coating the ceiling with water-based paint. How to paint the ceiling with a roller - step by step instructions

One of the most difficult stages of a home renovation that every home craftsman faces is finishing the ceiling. The lime or chalk whitewashing, which was widely used until recently, is now used quite rarely. This is explained by the fact that the initially snow-white ceiling becomes dirty over time and takes on an unsightly appearance.

In addition, such a finish requires a significant amount of labor to prepare the surface for topcoating. Painting the ceiling with acrylic paint retains its attractive appearance much longer, and maintenance of such a finish is not particularly difficult. Repairs are quick and easy and can be painted by hand.

A perfectly painted ceiling has a completely monotonous surface

Preparing to repair the ceiling

The beautifully painted ceiling is shown in the photo. To paint the ceiling without streaks, you need to prepare well for the work. First of all, you should free the room as much as possible from interfering furnishings. Then you need to carefully remove the old finish from the surface of the ceiling.

After that, it must be properly leveled, removing all significant elevation differences. At the final stage of preparation, a layer of primer is applied to the coating to improve the adhesion of the paint to the base and more economical consumption of it. The following materials and tools will be required:

  • step ladder and film for covering interior items;
  • spatula and paint roller or wide brush;
  • sanding machine and sandpaper;
  • primer and putty;
  • safety goggles, respirator and tight work suit;
  • a container with water and a lantern.

By illuminating with a flashlight, you can easily identify the existing irregularities in the coating. It is most convenient to moisten the surface with a spray gun or a paint roller, or apply a primer with a wide brush. The use of a stepladder makes the work much easier. Spray gun helps to paint without streaks.

Painting the ceiling with your own hands will help reduce the cost of repair work.

Room preparation

Painting the ceiling surface with acrylic paint requires preparatory measures. The room should be prepared for the appearance of a simply amazing amount of dirt and fine dust that occurs when removing the old coating. Upholstered furniture can be hopelessly damaged by scattered pieces of limestone and chalk dust moistened with dirty water. As a result, sofas, armchairs and other furniture must be removed from the room.

It is very convenient to close walls and furniture with a special film

Sometimes, for some reason, it is difficult to do this, in this case, you should cover all the interior items remaining in the room with a waterproof film. You can fix it with wide tape, which can be easily removed later.

Chandeliers and other lighting devices are dismantled from the surface of the ceiling, to prevent a short circuit, the supply voltage is removed from the electrical wires, which is especially important in the bathroom. Careful preparation helps to paint without streaks.

Removing the old coating

The method of removing the old coating depends on what kind of finishing material was used previously. The easiest way is to remove the whitewash with chalk: it is washed off with a soft sponge soaked in water. If difficulties arise in this process, you have to scrape off the coating with a metal spatula.

To begin with, a kilogram of table salt is dissolved in a bucket of warm water, and the area of the ceiling to be cleaned is moistened with a spray bottle, a wide brush or roller. After waiting until the whitewash is soaked, it is scraped off with a spatula, to which it is useful to screw a scoop with a wire, where crumbling dirt will collect.

The most noticeable irregularities are cleaned with a spatula.

In some cases, wallpaper or foam tiles are used to finish the ceiling. Wet wallpaper peels off the base easily, foam tiles also break off easily. In the latter case, it is better to scrape off the remnants of glue with a metal spatula, the use of chemicals can lead to injuries of the skin and visual organs. Soot spots on the surface are removed by washing with water mixed with soda, rust spots are treated with copper sulfate.

Putty and leveling

After cleaning the surface of the ceiling, it is visually inspected in order to detect irregularities in the coating. Large-sized cracks are closed with a reinforcing mesh, the hollows are filled with putty and smoothed with a spatula, the protrusions are cut off.

The joints between the concrete slabs and the joints between the ceiling and the walls are tapped in order to detect voids, which are also filled with putty. After thorough leveling of the surface, a primer is applied to it with a brush-maklovitsy in two layers.

A composition with antiseptic properties is well suited, which prevents the further development of pathogenic microflora. For high-quality drying of the primer, it is important to maintain the correct mode of positive temperatures in the room from five to thirty degrees Celsius.

Leveling the ceiling with putty

The final leveling of the surface before covering the ceiling with water-based paint is achieved by applying a putty. Its first layer is located in the transverse direction of the primer coating, the second - transversely to the first. By illuminating the surface to be treated with a lantern, it is easy to detect and eliminate even minor differences in height that will shade nearby areas.

After drying, the roughness of the coating is cleaned off with sandpaper. In the bathroom, the putty should be applied especially carefully. Painted concrete will serve for a long time with high-quality preparation of the base. In the bathroom, the painted ceiling is exposed to a rather aggressive effect.

When is a good brush and the better is a roller

For high-quality performance of painting work, both brushes and rollers are used. The brush is good for painting corners, joints of mating surfaces, heating batteries, pipe networks and other similar elements. It is convenient to carry out lime whitewashing with a large brush-brush, it is somewhat difficult to use a roller when working with such material.

The roller is best used when working on large areas: the larger the surface, the more effective its use. This is true for even surfaces; curved objects of complex configuration cannot be painted with a roller.

Standard set for painting the ceiling

The specified tool can be used while standing in one place, making forward and backward movements with a long handle, which is important in case of difficult access to the treated surface. The paint is applied evenly, without visually noticeable strokes, and this is difficult to achieve with a brush. Painting the ceiling surface with a roller gives good results.

The choice of the roller is a separate question

The choice of a roller is a matter that requires separate consideration. This tool is available in a wide variety of sizes to handle a variety of surface features. There are also corner beads that have a working coating on the end part, which is necessary when processing corners. A fur coat is called a covering of the working part; it is made of the following materials:

  • felt or velor;
  • foam rubber or mohair;
  • natural fur or polymers.

When using a roller during work, it must be borne in mind that the longer the pile of his fur coat, the greater the consumption of paint and varnish material.

Working with a roller is much faster and easier, since it takes up several times more paint than an ordinary brush.
Rollers are very different in size and quality.

To cover the ceiling with acrylic paint, a roller with a fur coat made of synthetics is better suited, while the coating will turn out to be even and without streaks. You can work with oil-based paints with almost any type of this tool. It is undesirable to only use a foam rubber coat, since this material deteriorates under the influence of solvents that are part of oil paints.

Which water-based paint is better

Before going to the store, you need to decide which paint is best to paint the ceiling. In the modern construction market, there is a huge selection of paints based on water emulsion. They contain pigment and polymer components dissolved in water. Depending on the active substance, the following types of water-based paints are distinguished:

  • containing liquid glass (silicate);
  • highly resistant to moisture (acrylic);
  • resistant to aggressive chemical media (latex);
  • notable for its versatility (silicone);
  • inexpensive (polyvinyl acetate).

Several representatives of ceiling paints

To decide which water-based paint is better in each specific case, you can compare their technical characteristics. It should be based on the correspondence of the price and quality of this type of paints and varnishes.

Acrylic paint color and tinting

Acrylic paints are available in a standard color palette. To obtain the desired shade, their tinting is applied. It is a procedure for mixing paint and coloring pigments to obtain the desired shade of paint and varnish material.

Tinting is used when cosmetic repairs are needed, if part of the coating is swollen or peeled off, in case of a lack of paint to complete the entire amount of work or the need to create a color palette in harmony with the environment.

When tinting, the paint is thoroughly mixed

Coloring pigments are added to acrylic paint, the so-called colorants, made in the form of dry mixtures, paste or the same paint. They can be based on organic or inorganic origin, organics give richer colors, but they are unstable to ultraviolet radiation. Inorganic colorants have good resistance to aggressive environmental influences, but the colors formed with their help are less vibrant.

If we paint in whitewash

Previously, whitewash was widely used to finish the surface of the ceiling. If it is necessary to apply paint on top of it, certain conditions must be met. The whitewash should be applied in a thin layer that is free from cracking. Otherwise, the whitewash particles may begin to flake off during painting.

Ceiling primer is like butter that won't spoil porridge

The check is carried out by applying a deeply penetrating layer of primer to the whitewashed surface. After it dries, the control area is wetted with water, and if the coating does not peel off, paint can be applied over the whitewash.

Water-based paint will stay on the ceiling for a very long time if the whitewash layer underneath has good adhesion to the surface, and there are no bumps and cracks.

Of course, the use of a primer is mandatory if the painting is not done with the material that was previously applied. In this case, the composition of the soil is determined by the choice of the topcoat.

How to paint correctly with a roller

Compliance with some simple rules will help to paint the ceiling with a roller. Before proceeding with the main volume of work, you should paint over the corners and joints of ceilings and walls with a brush. Then a little paint is poured into the paint tray, a roller is dipped into it, the excess from the fur coat is removed on the ribbed part of the tray.

When painting the ceiling, it is important to sit on a comfortable staircase

The first layer should be applied from the window opening in the direction perpendicular to the incidence of sunlight, and the second layer is applied after the first has dried in the transverse direction. Thus, it is possible to avoid the appearance of weakly colored areas, imperceptible at first glance, but which will appear over time. You should start work early in the morning, since the sun's rays at this time highlight all the irregularities well. Small defects of the dried coating found during visual inspection are cleaned with fine-grained emery cloth.

You can work with a spray gun

You can paint the ceiling by working with a spray gun. Its application greatly speeds up and facilitates the process compared to using a paint roller. When preparing the tool for use, the spray gun is directed to the side and, relieving excess pressure in the system, ensure that the emerging paint is applied in a uniform and thin layer.

When using a spray gun, it is easy to ensure an even color of the ceiling

The surface of the ceiling is divided into several sections and their sequential painting will be performed, while the stream of paint is directed strictly vertically. The sprayer is held at a distance of thirty to fifty centimeters from the surface, a meter section is covered in approximately five seconds.

It is necessary to maintain a uniform pace of work, a delay of the nozzle at one point will lead to the formation of an excessively thick layer of paint flowing down. The first layer is applied in the direction transverse to the incidence of sunlight, the second - in the longitudinal direction. To form a high-quality painted surface when using a spray gun, three layers of paint and varnish should be applied. Each subsequent layer is applied after the previous one has completely dried.

Little tricks

Little tricks in the work will help to qualitatively paint the ceiling. So, the finishing layer of paint and varnish material is applied in the direction of incidence of rays of natural light, this makes the joints of adjacent layers invisible.

If a local, incompletely painted area of the surface is found, it will be necessary to completely cover it with a new layer of paint; attempts to paint over only the defective area will lead to the appearance of clearly distinguishable spots. Visual inspection from different angles of view helps to identify such areas.

Pattern of movements when painting the ceiling

Under no circumstances should you try to neglect the application of the primer coat. Such attempts to save money will lead to the fact that the paint that has poorly adhered to the base will soon simply crumble. You should not hesitate when applying paint, unjustified delays will lead to the fact that the dried material begins to stick to the paint roller's fur coat, and the work will have to be started anew. An excessively thick layer of applied paint can be brought back to normal by running a dry roller over it, while the pile on his fur coat will absorb the excess.

Not a single cosmetic repair can do without staining the ceiling. For this, water-based compositions based on polymers are used. The quality of the appearance of the ceiling depends on the correct use of paint. Often novice painters are faced with the problem of divorce. They appear due to the wrong painting technique.

This article will be useful to those who wish to learn how to avoid such problems. It describes in detail the rules and technique of painting, observing that you will be able to prevent the occurrence of stains. But before you start painting the ceiling, you need to choose the right coloring composition.

The choice of water-based paint

The consumer market has a rich assortment of water-based paints of different composition and purpose. In order not to be mistaken, carefully read the label on the jar. It indicates the type of composition and method of application. There are four types of water-based paints:

  • silicate;
  • acrylic;
  • silicone;
  • latex.

In ordinary rooms, paints are used in the composition, which contains latex and acrylic. They dry quickly, do not emit pungent odors, and are resistant to wet cleaning using chemicals.

In rooms where the level of humidity is high, paints based on silicone and silicate are used. For example, in the kitchen and bathroom. Due to its composition, a vapor-permeable layer is created on the surface, which absorbs moisture, and then slowly evaporates it.

Before applying water-based paint, carefully prepare the ceiling. To do this, remove the old layer of whitewash. If the ceiling has damaged areas, rub over the defects with putty. Level the entire surface and prime at the end.

  1. Cleaning the ceiling. To remove limescale, wet the surface well. This is done with a water spray or a regular roller. For maximum effect, do this procedure twice, at intervals of twenty minutes. Lime will absorb water well, this will help to easily remove it from the surface. Use a metal spatula to scrape off the whitewash. After cleaning, scrub the ceiling with a sponge.
  2. Elimination of defects. Expand any cracks or chips that appear and fill with a finishing putty. Do this in small portions, rubbing in deeper. After giving time to dry, rub the putty with sandpaper.
  3. Leveling the surface. While fixing cracks and chips, you may have noticed that the ceiling has uneven areas. To fix this, use a thin layer putty. It is flexible and adheres well to the surface. Use a wide trowel to apply the filler. In areas with a large indentation, make several layers. Achieve a perfectly flat surface over the entire ceiling area.
  4. Ceiling primer. After leveling the ceiling, it must be primed. The primer fills the micropores, makes the putty surface smooth, and improves the adhesion of the water-based paint. Apply the primer in two layers at intervals of 15–20 minutes.

Required tools

Choose the right tool to apply water-based paint without streaks. Pay special attention to this step. To paint you need the following tools:

  1. The roller is the main tool in the painting business. It has a foam and fur surface. To paint the ceiling with a water emulsion, it is better to use rollers with a fur coat that has an average pile length. When rolling, foam rubber creates small bubbles with air - this must not be allowed! And the fur coat leaves behind a relief mark that masks small scratches well.
  2. Brush - Used to paint areas that the roller cannot grasp. Ideal for spot work in areas close to the wall. For this process to be convenient, it is better to use brushes with a medium head size.
  3. The tray is a plastic tray with a small depression filled with paint. It is convenient to use for dipping the roller.
  4. Construction mixer - used to dilute paint.
  5. Polyethylene and masking tape - will help protect walls and furniture from staining solution.
  6. Protective equipment: work clothes, goggles, headgear and gloves.

If you plan to paint the ceiling in two or three shades, then for each color you will need to use a new brush, roller and tray. Using the same tool for the entire job will blend the shades. The result will not be the look that was intended.

Ceiling painting rules

Many people make mistakes when painting the ceiling with water-based paint. There are nuances that are important to be aware of. For example, it is necessary to take into account the rays of light or the order in which the areas are painted. By following the rules, you will be able to make the surface of the ceiling streak-free.

  • Always start painting from the corners, and then the rest of the area.
  • Apply several coats of water-based paint at intervals.
  • Allow twelve hours for each layer to dry.
  • When finished, cover the windows with a cloth to keep the light out of the surface. The sun's rays can leave dark spots on the ceiling.
  • Avoid drafts in the room until the water-based coating dries.
  • Do not dry the ceiling with electrical devices.

There are several technologies for applying water-based paint. The choice of method depends on the conditions in which it will be used and the type of coating. In our case, it is necessary to make a streak-free surface. In order for the paint to delight with its appearance for a long time, use the following tips regarding the dyeing technology:

  1. Start painting at the corners and edges of the wall and ceiling junction. Determine the corner farthest from the front door. Dip your brush in paint and run it around the perimeter of the ceiling. The width of the line can be 5–10 cm. This is done in order not to hit the walls when working with a roller.
  2. After finishing the work with the perimeter, start painting the main area of the ceiling. Fill the patch with water emulsion and dip the roller in it. Then roll it well on white paper so that the paint evenly saturates the pile and start painting the ceiling.
  3. Hold the roller at a 45 degree angle, being careful not to overhead.
  4. Apply the first coat parallel to the rays of light falling on the ceiling. Make the second pass perpendicularly. The third coat should be applied in the same way as the first.
  5. Make parallel movements with an overlap of 5 cm. Be sure to apply the layer evenly. Do not roll over the same place many times - an influx will form.
  6. To remove excess water emulsion from the ceiling, walk over the area with a dry roller without paint - his fur coat will absorb the excess.
  7. Use a bright, directional beam of light, such as from a flashlight, to determine the quality of the surface.
  8. Apply the finishing coat with a new roller, this will help to achieve an even distribution of the coloring composition and prevent streaks.

Water based paint is an affordable way to create a beautiful ceiling. For the quality of work to be at its best, you need practice and adherence to simple techniques. The result will be a surface that will delight you with its uniformity.

Video: how to paint the ceiling with high quality

Painting with water-based paint is one of the most popular methods for finishing the ceiling. Its advantage is its simplicity: a few strokes of the brush, and a neat, beautiful coating is ready. However, in order to achieve such a result, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the technology. Let's talk about this in more detail.

Why water-based paint

Important! If the ceiling is very dark, be sure to lighten it before painting with an appropriate primer. Otherwise, the base will shine through the paint and even 3 layers will not be enough for the coating to become snow-white. In this case, the paint should be chosen with a high hiding power.

What tools do you need to paint the ceiling

For work, you should prepare:

  1. Roller with medium pile. A short pile can leave streaks, while a long pile will pick up a lot of paint. Craftsmen do not recommend using foam or velor rollers.
  2. A small flute brush for finishing the ceiling at the junction with the wall.
  3. A paint bath with a grooved bottom. Do not neglect it. The cuvette, unlike other containers, will help to leave just as much paint as needed on the roller. This will help you achieve an even, smudge-free layer.
  4. Fine sandpaper for grouting.
  5. Masking tape for pasting the edges of surfaces that do not require painting.
  6. If you do not plan to use a ladder or goats, then you will need a telescopic folding handle for a brush or roller, with which you can reach the ceiling.
  7. It is advisable to get a bright portable lamp to track the transitions of paint on the surface and monitor the uniformity of the applied layers.
  8. Water-based paint.

If it is planned to paint the ceiling with colored paint, then the white composition must be diluted with a color intended for water-based mixtures. When mixing, it must be borne in mind that the dried surface will be a couple of tones lighter than liquid paint. The entire volume should be diluted: it is extremely difficult to get the same shade in different portions.

If you use in-store tinting, write down the paint color code. In the case when you need the same shade, it will be enough to purchase the same paint with which the surface was painted earlier and tint it with the same shade. But it should be remembered that if the surface was painted for a long time, then the paint could fade and lose its tone. In this case, it will be much more difficult to choose the same shade. It may be easier to paint the entire surface.

Stages of work

So, it's time to start painting. For best results, apply 3 coats to the ceiling.

Step 1. Stir the paint, add water to it, if necessary according to the instructions, stir, pour into a bath. If there is a lot of paint, then you can use an electric drill with a mixer attachment for mixing. This should be done at low speeds so as not to whip the paint into foam. Some paint formulations must be drained. This can be done using a nylon stocking or gauze.

Step 2. Paint over the corners and places near the joints with the walls along the perimeter of the ceiling with a brush. The strip should be as narrow as possible - 7-8 centimeters. Treat other hard-to-reach places behind the radiator pipes, around the wiring.

Step 3. Apply the first layer with a roller, applying stripes perpendicular to the window, from one wall to another. You need to paint with wide, confident movements, making parallel stripes, with an overlap of several centimeters. You should act quickly without respite and smoke breaks, otherwise the composition will lie unevenly in places of breaks.

Step 4. Wait until the first coat of paint is dry (usually no more than 2 hours).

Step 5. Assess the result. After applying the first layer, it is still difficult to draw conclusions, but you can already notice the unpainted places.

Step 6. Apply a second coat of paint. Now the stripes should be applied parallel to the window, that is, the paint layers must be alternated in the perpendicular direction. Check the uniformity of the coating with a lamp and carefully touch up the missing areas, if any.

Step 7. Wait until dry and apply 3 layers.

Important! When choosing the direction of staining, one must proceed from the following principles: the last layer must be done, moving towards the window, with strokes along the sunlight, and each layer must be perpendicular to the previous one.

It is this application technique that will make it possible to make an even, clean, uniform ceiling. The last layer is best applied with a new roller.

The most common problems and how to solve them

Despite the seeming simplicity, ceiling painting does not tolerate even the slightest negligence. Most often, ugly spots and stains remain on the surface, which appear especially clearly in bright light. The reasons are:

  • poor surface preparation (the ceiling is not leveled, there are contrasting spots);
  • non-compliance with painting technology.

In the first case, you will have to leave everything as it is, or rip off the paint to the ground and start over. In the second, you can try to correct the situation: apply another layer of more liquid paint to the entire ceiling, after sanding the surface with fine sandpaper. Did not help? We'll have to redo everything. To prevent this from happening, when painting you need to pay attention to the following points:

  • the composition must be mixed very well, otherwise the tone of the ceiling may be heterogeneous;
  • the paint should saturate the roller evenly, for which it needs to be dipped and squeezed several times until it completely absorbs the mixture. They need to roll, not spread paint on the ceiling;
  • the paint should not be too thick, otherwise streaks may appear;
  • no need to evaluate the exact result before drying: a "wet" ceiling looks very different than a dry one;
  • the next layer should be applied only after the previous one is completely dry.

Sometimes the paint starts to flake off. This is possible if, when painting, it was too thick, applied in a thick layer, or the ceiling was poorly prepared. It is necessary to remove the exfoliated material, rinse the surface, dry, prime and paint again.

Among all types of finishing, painting the ceiling with water-based paint is the most common option. But what is typical, when it comes to this method, for some reason they mean exclusively a concrete floor with a surface prepared to an ideal state. This is not the case.

There are different base materials for which painting with water-based paint is, if not the only one, then one of the main types of finishing:

  • ceilings with a leveling layer of plaster or putty;
  • concrete floors in "clean" form;
  • false ceilings made of wood;
  • suspended plasterboard systems;
  • glass wallpaper;
  • stretch fabric ceilings.

The list of works at the initial stage depends on which option is being discussed.

Preparation of the concrete base

Technologically, the most difficult type of work is leveling the floor to the ideal state of a smooth surface. The complete cycle looks like this:

  • remove the old coating: wash off the whitewash, peel off the paint or remove the wallpaper;
  • for plastered ceilings - remove crumbling areas and strengthen with a deep penetration primer;
  • clean up traces of rust (if they have emerged from a closely located surface of the reinforcement) and treat this place with an anti-corrosion compound;
  • if there is a fungus or mold, then a full processing cycle is carried out, up to the removal of the entire infected area of plaster or putty;
  • the entire surface is leveled with a thin layer of finishing mortar, which is sanded after drying;
  • clean the surface with a vacuum cleaner;
  • primed.

Preparation for painting a concrete floor for a loft-style interior looks much easier. It just needs to be cleaned of any kind of finish, including a layer of plaster. And then from the whole list of works only one drops out - leveling the surface. But it is he who is the most time-consuming and difficult when performing ceiling repairs.

Wooden ceilings

Many interior styles use wooden ceilings. And not all of them are covered with colorless varnish (with or without tinting - it doesn't matter). Designers often resort to painting a hemmed (or suspended) wooden ceiling with colored water-based paints for wood. For example, in the Provence style, this is any pastel shade of blue, salad or beige.

There are also two options for preparing for painting a wooden ceiling with water-based paint with your own hands.

In the first case, the boards or slats are sanded, a layer of colorless wood primer (with antiseptic properties) is applied and painted. Unlike concrete or plaster, there can be one layer of paint here, so that the texture of natural wood appears through it.

In the second case, you can do without grinding. For example, when used for sheathing unedged boards in the interior "rustic style", "loft" or rustic.

Plasterboard suspended ceilings

This look also requires leveling the surface, although this is one of the purposes of the structure itself.

It is necessary to putty either part of the surface or the entire ceiling.

But first, it is necessary to strengthen the seams and corner joints of the sheets (for multi-level ceilings) so that cracks do not appear on the decorative paint layer. On flat joints, this is done with a serpyanka tape, on the edges - with a perforated corner.

Partial surface filling is carried out for simple painting of the ceiling. In this case, the points of attachment of the gypsum board to the profiles and the place of reinforcement are covered and leveled under the general level.

It is recommended to do a full putty of the surface when pasting the ceiling with wallpaper for painting. Although not necessary. The only advantage is that this technique makes it possible to remove the entire upper decorative layer during the next repair, while preserving the drywall itself.

Preparation for painting glass wallpaper and fabric ceilings

Perhaps these are two of the simplest options.

If glass wallpaper was once glued, then the problem is how to update the ceiling painted with water-based paint. In this case, at the initial stage, either dry cleaning is carried out to remove dust, or wet cleaning to remove more severe dirt. Applying a primer is necessary if the new color is very different from the old one.

Painting a fabric stretch ceiling is often used for both a new canvas and an old one.

In the first case, the reason is a small palette of the source material, which is limited to light matte shades. And if, for design reasons, a rich or bright color is needed, then the fabric is dyed. Manufacturers claim that this can be done 4-5 times.

The same motivation is most often for painting an old stretch ceiling. Although the same method allows not only changing the color to a new one, but also restoring the old one if it was damaged in some places.

And for fabric ceilings, the entire preparation procedure consists of dry or wet cleaning of the coating.

Types of paint

There are four main types of paint that use water as a solvent:

  • Polyvinyl acetate.

Already from the name it is clear that the same group of polymers is used as a binder as for PVA glue. This is the least expensive category, but the least durable. Paints are afraid of water and high humidity, quickly fade and begin to "peel off".

  • Silicate.

Another group related to the binder of the same name glue. Refers to mineral water-borne paints. Supplied in the form of two components - dry part containing pigments and potash water glass. They have good adhesion to all mineral surfaces, therefore they are often used when painting cement (cement-lime), gypsum or silicate plaster and concrete. The coating is characterized by good vapor permeability and moisture resistance.

  • Silicone.

They have good hiding power and elasticity - they can be applied even without a primer layer. Excellent vapor permeability combined with resistance to fungal attack. The main area of use is the coloring of mineral substrates that are used in high humidity conditions. The price limits widespread use, the highest among water-based paints.

  • Acrylic.

Some of the most popular and durable. They are distinguished by their versatility - they are suitable for any type of base. Due to the peculiarities of the drying of the hydroxyl group, the structure of the film is akin to the crystalline one - with high strength and resistance to any kind of impact. Pigments are not located on the surface, but inside the layer, therefore, the effect of coloring in the mass is created - the coating does not fade, does not wash off, does not wear off. Additives are responsible for adhesion and gloss.

Among them may be latex, which increases the elasticity of the film and its resistance to temperature changes - this type is used to paint fabric stretch ceilings.

Technologies and tools

A standard set of tools is used to create a "smooth" monochrome coating:

  • brushes;
  • rollers;
  • spray gun.

The most even layer is given by the use of a spray gun. Usually they use diluted and strained paint, in a more "liquid form" than when working with a brush or roller. This reduces its hiding power, so sometimes even the second layer is not enough. An exception is painting the ceiling with water-based paint over a layer of old paint of the same color.

The disadvantage of this method is the need for complete protection of all surfaces and the entire "content" of the room. It is not enough to close only the adjacent part of the wall - a suspension from microscopic drops will fall on any open object in the room. Therefore, it will not be possible to quickly "refresh" the ceiling - this method is good when carrying out a full-fledged renovation: in an empty room, with a standard "top-down" finishing sequence

If we talk about how to paint the ceiling correctly - only with a brush or only with a roller, then both types of tools must be used in combination. They work in stages. At first - "thinly", painting over the corners and skirting boards with a brush. Then paint the ceiling with water-based paint with a roller.

The first secret of painting is the correct direction of movement with a brush and roller:

  • For two layers. The first is across the ceiling relative to the window, the second is towards it. If the room has two walls with windows, then the interior door is chosen as a guide.
  • For three layers. The first is towards the window, the second is across, the third is again along.

The second secret is to thoroughly mix all the paint and be sure to strain it so that there are no lumps.

Third - if the ceiling area is large and you will have to use several cans of paint to paint in several layers, then you need to make sure that they are all from the same batch. At least for the last layer.

How to paint a rough ceiling

How to paint a rough ceiling surface evenly? You don't have to try to "repair" it to make it perfectly flat. There are simpler and easier methods.

Decorative paints with a volumetric texture. For example, multicolor. They consist of a colorless polymer binder and multi-colored soft particles. The paint is applied with a roller or brush, and then the filler grains are pressed with a soft spatula.

The second method is to use decorative staining with a special tool. These can be embossed rollers or sponges in the form of a set of sponges with large pores. In this case, two paint colors are used: the first for the "base", the second for the top layer.

It is believed that painting the ceiling in an apartment with water-based paint is not difficult. But in order to achieve an excellent result and high quality repairs, you should study the technology for performing the preparatory and basic painting processes. It is important to choose the right material and tools that will be easy and convenient to work with. Then painting the ceiling with water-based paint with your own hands will not cause any problems and the result will delight the eye for many years.

Choice of paint and tools

Water-based paint replaced chalk and lime, which until recently were used to whitewash all ceilings in apartments. This finishing material is good because

  • dries quickly;
  • produces little splashing;
  • practically does not smell;
  • absolutely safe, does not poison the air with toxins and other harmful substances;
  • suitable for all types of surfaces.

You cannot find the best material for decorating the ceiling and walls with your own hands. It is easy and pleasant to work with him for both a professional and a common man in the street.

Manufacturers of these paints produce compositions of different quality characteristics. There are several types of water emulsions: silicone, silicate, acrylic and latex. All of them provide excellent whiteness, but differ in coverage, abrasion, moisture resistance and price. For kitchens, bathrooms and rooms in which surfaces require frequent wet cleaning, it is recommended to choose washable compounds with a dirt-repellent effect.

Before painting the ceiling with water-based paint, you need to carry out the necessary calculations in order to buy the required amount of material. Since the color may differ slightly in different containers, it is recommended to purchase a jar of a slightly larger volume than required. Leftover paint can be used for wall decoration.

In some cases, creating perfectly white ceilings is not required. Then a color scheme of a certain color (more often blue) is added to the paint and the desired shade is obtained.

If the pile is too long, the instrument will be heavy. If it is short, you will have to drive over the same place several times before it is painted over. The foam pad will wear off quickly and will need to be replaced.

The handle, the clasp, must be stable, not dangling, and move freely. A rubber insert must be attached to it so that the tool is firmly held in the hand.

Preparatory work

To paint the ceiling with water-based paint and achieve the perfect result, first examine the condition of the surface. It is necessary to eliminate all defects in advance, level and smooth the base, otherwise they will appear under the paint. The process of preparing the surface with your own hands consists of the following activities:

  • or wash off the whitewash;
  • cleaning and plastering large seams;
  • then small cracks are covered with putty;
  • be sure to putty the joint between walls and ceiling;
  • the entire surface is leveled with a special mixture and smoothed;
  • at the end, cover with a layer.

When painting the ceiling with water-based paint, you can reduce material costs and ensure better adhesion to the surface. To do this, you need to prime the base to create a dense layer and close all the pores. To do this, use a liquid primer or a mixture made by hand from PVA glue and water.

If the ceilings are dark in color, and the paint has a slight hiding power, you will have to repeat the finish several times. To achieve the effect of an even, smooth and perfectly white surface, it must be painted over several times.

In order to save paint at the stage of preparatory work, the craftsmen cover the base with white plaster or leave a layer of old material. This can be done if you are sure that he will not "reach" for a new layer of aqueous emulsion. Otherwise, potholes will form on the surface, and the peeled old finish will stick to the pile of the roller.

Another way to save money is to buy cheap and expensive paint. For the first layers, a budget option is used, and for the topcoat - a composition with special additives that create a pleasant shine and gloss.

How to paint the ceiling with water-based paint without streaks? It is enough to adhere to the general rules, use a quality tool and follow the finishing technology. Then the result will be impressive, and the quality of work will avoid repairs for several years.
