Hanger from an old chair. What can be made from old chairs

Sometimes old unnecessary things can be turned into a worthy and functional decoration for a summer residence. In today's review, we will focus on old chairs, from which, with a little imagination, you can make really interesting decorative, and in some cases functional items: garden flower stands, coat hangers, shelves, swings, benches, etc. Below are examples of what can be made from unnecessary chairs. Let's get started ...

1. Hanger.

A necessary thing in everyday life is a hanger, it can be in the form of a coat hanger or a wall hanger. The option with a wall hanger is simple to implement, for this you just need to remove the back from the chair, tie a string on its upper part, drive a carnation into the wall and hang this structure on it.

A hanger-hanger, in general, is also not difficult to make, for this you need to stock up on curved hooks, the size of the crossbar in the closet and the backs of unnecessary chairs. With a thin drill in the upper part of the back of the chair, you need to create a hole in which to insert the pre-prepared hooks, covered at the base with a generous layer of glue.

2. Swing.

Great idea for a swing seat. It is necessary to take a seat with a back from an unnecessary chair, nail down two cross-beams from below, drill holes along the edges of which to thread the ropes. Fix the finished rocker on a sturdy tree. Children will be delighted, especially if the seat is painted in some bright shade.

3. A chair from an old tree stump.

There is an old, hard-hitting tree stump in the garden, so why not make an outwardly attractive chair out of it. To do this, take the seat of a chair and glue or nail it to the top of the stump. The seat can be painted in a bright shade or decorated using decoupage technique.

4. Rocking chair.

Many people dream of a rocking chair, but it can be made from an unnecessary chair. To do this, you need to order semicircular beams from the carpenter or remove several planks from a wooden barrel and fix a chair on them.

5. Bed for a pet.

Below you can see how loving owners delight their beloved pets. To make such a bed, it is necessary to prepare a box in which to put a foam mattress, make the headboard from the back of the chair, and the foot from the legs of the chair.

6. Shop or bench.

On three chairs without seats installed in a row, you can put a board upholstered with a pleasant-to-touch material with a foam layer. Various options for makeshift benches can be explored in the photo below.

7. Stand for a bowl of a large dog.

A large pet can be fed from a bowl attached to the seat of the chair; for this, simply cut out a circle in the seat of the chair with a jigsaw to fit the size of the bottom of the bowl. Thus, the dog will not be able to throw over the bowl of food or water.

8. Shelf.

From the back of the chair, as well as part of the seat, you will get an excellent shelf for small things, the options for such shelves can be explored in the photos below.

9. Sleds.

And here is another great idea on the topic of "what you can do from old chairs with your own hands" - a sled. A very interesting idea, but it requires design, the location of every detail must be carefully thought out so that in the end the sled is safe in operation.

10. Flower stand.

The most demanded idea of using old chairs is a garden flower stand. To make such a decorative element, it is necessary to cut a hole in the seat of the chair to the size of the future pot installed in it. The photo below shows the process of making such a stylish garden flower stand.

More examples of flower stands:

11. Box for storing magazines and newspapers.

From the legs of the chairs, you can put together an excellent box for storing correspondence - newspapers, magazines, letters.

Also, the box can be made of flat boards, and fixed between the legs of the chair at an angle, as in the photo below.

12. Bright chairs.

This point implies the restoration of an old chair, or rather sanding it, and then painting it in a bright acidic shade, as a result, the chair turns out to be so fashionable that it is simply impossible to guess about its previous deplorable state.

Flower stand from an old chair:

After this review, the question of what can be done from an old chair should stop bothering you, all that remains is to choose a suitable idea and start implementing it. It would seem that it is an old chair, well, what can be made of it, someone might say “throw it away and forget it,” but the ideas presented above will be very relevant at the dacha, so if you have such retro items in your house, do not rush to dispose of them, currently, this nostalgic destination is in great demand.

Many things lose their attractive appearance over time, so they need to be updated. You can put some effort into refurbishing the furniture and giving it an amazing look. Especially often people remodel old chairs. There are many ways to restore them.

Views

To independently renew an old chair, you need to decide on the type of restoration. There are several ways to help you restore outdated furniture. The following methods can be used to renovate wood or chipboard surfaces:

  • Decoupage- this is the ability to decorate furniture by gluing some motifs or pictures cut from paper on it. To preserve the renewed surface of the object, a special varnish is used that protects the paper from external influences. Decoupage allows you to choose an interesting pattern and transfer it to old furniture, thereby updating the interior.

  • Adhesive tape or film helps to renew old furniture without much effort. The self-adhesive decorative foil can be designed to simulate natural stone, wood, leather and ceramics. She is not afraid of water, temperature extremes and direct sunlight. With its help, you can completely transform faded stools.

  • Art painting Is a way of decorating objects with different colors. There are several types of artistic painting: Khokhloma, Zhostovo, Gzhel and Mezen painting. But restoration with this method requires skill and care.

  • Craquelure- the technique of creating a visually aged wood. Cracks form on the coating, through which the main tone is visible. To get this result, use a special plaster, varnish or paint.

The technique itself does not require serious preparation and accuracy of application.

  • Painting- the lightest type of restoration, for which it is only necessary to clean the product well. The paintwork will keep the chair attractive for a long time.

  • Lamination- A method using decorated paper that is glued to the surface of the chair using a synthetically melted resin.

  • Veneering- represents the renovation of furniture with a thin layer of wood, which is glued to the surface with a one- or two-component composition. And to give the veneer aesthetics, you can cover it with varnish or wax.

In addition to updating the aesthetic appearance of the chair, sometimes more serious intervention may be required - it may be necessary to replace or repair a broken part of the structure. In some cases, it is enough just to restore the connecting parts, and in others - to completely replace the part.

To restore a wooden or metal highchair, it may be necessary to replace the old upholstery. For this, it is necessary to prepare materials that will help restore the product. Upholstery requires neatness and precision, combined with a mastery of tools.

How to disassemble it yourself?

It is not difficult to disassemble a chair with your own hands, since its design is known to almost everyone. First you need to unscrew the back, and then the legs. And the product is assembled in the reverse order so that all the grooves take their places. If the chair is fixed with glued spikes, the attachment points are moistened with hot water or sprayed with steam from a steam generator.

If there are cracks on the wooden structure, then they are filled with a mixture of glue and sawdust, or glued and clamped until they are completely fixed. In case of damage to the spike fasteners, the old plugs are replaced, and the side joints are glued together. To do this, you need to make a small hole, pour glue into it and wait until it dries.

If the old chair is wobbling, then it is necessary to remove the legs from the special grooves and wedge their upper part. Due to this, they increase and hold better in the grooves.

Upgrading a highchair follows the same principle as an adult, but sometimes hinges or a swivel mechanism need to be replaced in it. Usually, children's designs consist of many parts that are designed to secure the position of the child. For greater strength, all connecting places need to be glued.

To disassemble the folding chair, it is enough to remove the axial pins that connect the backrest and the seat, and then remove the seat. Structures on a metal base are easier to disassemble - you need to unscrew the seat and the soft part of the back.

If the chair seat is installed on a spring block, it must be replaced with new springs. It is not necessary to remove the entire block for this.

Recovery process step by step

After disassembling the structure and restoring damaged parts, it is necessary to remove the old paintwork. After this, the main stage of the restoration begins.

First, a primer is applied to the cleaned surface of the chair, which completely matches the color of the product. After waiting for complete drying, the primer is cleaned with sandpaper to obtain a thin layer of coverage. After that, the product is coated with paint or varnish, wait for it to dry and apply another layer.

Each material is colored in a special way. For example, an anti-corrosion agent is first applied to a metal frame, and after it has completely dried, it is covered with a basic color. Transparent varnish is applied in several stages, and if a coloring composition is used, then it is better to resort to enamel for metal.

The wooden frame is first treated with wax, carefully distributing it over all areas. Instead of wax, you can use an oily primer that is applied with a brush. Then the product is covered with several layers of acrylic paint. These recovery steps allow you to quickly and easily renew your stool without the need for special face masks or gloves.

It is highly undesirable to paint plastic chairs, since plastic is prone to bending, and this will lead to crackling and peeling of paint. Therefore, it is a priority for them to sew covers or pillows.

The last stage of renovation consists of creating beautiful upholstery. Having removed the old upholstery, the seat base is cut out of the foam cushion, which is then attached to the surface using glue. For additional fixation, you can use paper clips. Having pulled the fabric well throughout the seat, secure it with furniture clips from below. Depending on personal preference, the fabric may have a bright pattern or no pattern at all.

To remake a seat with springs, batting is first fixed, and then a layer of foam rubber sheet. The fabric is attached according to the same principle as with a single layer of foam rubber, but it is pulled with a large emphasis to smooth out the spring relief.

Many people think about which paint is best for painting in order to maintain the effect for a long time. For wooden products, you can use stain or paint and varnish, and for iron structures - enamel specially designed for metal.

Vienna

To repair Viennese chairs yourself, you first need to assess their general condition. The amount of damage may vary depending on the operating conditions.

The most important damage that can be assessed at home is instability. This is due to the weakening of the spike joints. To bring the product back to its normal state, it is necessary to increase the size of the spike, put the seals on the drawers and replace the power bars. After that, the paintwork is replaced and the seat is restored.

To restore an obsolete structure, you need to prepare the basic materials and tools. To work, you need to get a hammer, furniture stapler, self-tapping screw, paints and varnishes, solvent, brushes, glue, scissors, cloth and sandpaper.

The renovation process begins with cleaning all surfaces of the product from dirt and dust. After that, the analysis of the chair begins. First, remove the seat and back, which are usually held in place by screws. Then, step by step, the rest of the details are removed. It is important to check the strength of all joints. If some attachment point does not hold well, then you should not disassemble it.

Disassembled elements must be replaced immediately so that no errors occur during the assembly process. All parts are smoothed with sandpaper in order to thoroughly clean them of old varnish. This is necessary so that after repainting the furniture, the new layer fits perfectly on the chair.

Next, be sure to inspect the places where the elements are glued. The top of the legs, which are attached in the grooves, must be wrapped in several layers of bandage, having smeared each layer with glue. If the leg wobbles very much, then a hole is made at the end, into which a small wedge is then driven in. Thus, the width of the end will increase, and the leg will firmly hold in the groove.

For side structures with a weakened seam on the inside, you need to make a hole, and use a syringe to inject an adhesive into it. You can also use greased matches and insert them into the socket when assembling the chair. In this case, the ends must be fitted with great accuracy so that no gaps are formed between them and the tsars.

The assembly of the structure begins with the complete gluing of all spike joints. Excess glue must be removed with a napkin. The product dries for about a day, and for maximum fixation, you need to put some heavy object on the seat.

To renew the seat, you need to get rid of the worn-out upholstery and fix all surface imperfections. If it is necessary to change the foam rubber, then on the new foam rubber sheet you need to draw a markup and cut out the part. The fabric that the seat will be upholstered with should be larger than the resulting seat. It is placed close to the surface and secured with paper clips on the back side.

The chair itself can be decorated in the Provence style. To do this, all wooden parts are painted, and after drying, they are processed with a grinder.

To fix the effect, you need to varnish the structure.

Updating parts

You can decorate the chair in various ways. Any materials can be used: paper, fabric, laces, paints, napkins, etc. It all depends on the imagination of the master and on the level of his skill. Naturally, if a person does not know how to work with complex equipment, then you should not resort to it. You need to start with something clearer.

With sisal

For this method, you can use both a wooden and a metal frame. For work, you will need a large ball of sisal rope, dense upholstery fabric such as velvet, a stapler, superglue, scissors, nails, a hammer, a pencil and a measuring tape.

You need to start repairs by removing the old upholstery from the seat and back. Then the details of the back are wrapped with sisal, smoothly passing to the legs. This must be done so that the rope fits snugly around the part and each subsequent row is close to the previous one. You need to fix the material with glue.

Having finished wrapping all the elements, you need to create a decoration on the back. To do this, a rope in several layers in 2-3 rows is wound first between the upper and lower rungs, and then between the side beams.

Having made a pattern for the new upholstery, you need to fasten it to the seat. For this, small nails or a stapler are suitable.

Wool yarn

To resort to this option, you will need a structure on a metal frame with a mesh back and a seat. For work, you need to prepare scissors, multi-colored woolen yarn, a crochet hook, a bar made of wood, a screwdriver and screws.

In this case, the mesh plays the role of a canvas, so double threads must be threaded through it in the diagonal direction. Moreover, each row can have a different color. You can use two contrasting colors or several shades of similar tone.

You can reinforce the damaged mesh with a few yarn stitches. After that, you need to cut a bar that will repeat the shape of the seat, and fix it with screws.

Decoupage from sewing patterns

This option works well for antique wood products with a hard seating position. For work, you will need patterns from magazines, glue, a brush, acrylic varnish, scissors, fabric, threads and a needle.

Sooner or later, even the sturdiest chairs fail. It is a pity to throw them away, because they have already become part of the interior, they have fallen in love with and keep in themselves a lot of spiritual memories. If this is the case, then you should think about the practical rework of old furniture and its conversion into new interior items. What can come out of the most ordinary old chairs?

In the interior of a country house or house, decorated in a rustic style, objects with history look special. They give the space a special retro gloss and create a real touch of antiquity, which is so necessary in interiors of this kind. This is where towel racks made from the backs of old chairs will be appropriate. It will not be difficult to create them, but they will colorfully fit into the design picture. You can safely decorate kitchens or bathrooms with such decor items.

Are the legs loose or broken on the chair? No problem! This does not mean that his life is over. If the body itself is strong enough and has an attractive appearance, then its best purpose is to become a garden swing. Previously, it is worth sanding the piece of furniture, soaking it with an antifungal solution and painting it in a beautiful color. At the same time, the paint must be resistant to temperature extremes, precipitation and strong sun.

In the same garden, it is appropriate to put an unusual planter, also made from an old chair. Sometimes it happens that after the renovation, all the furniture is completely changed, but there is no desire to get rid of the old one. In this case, the garden and even the interior of the house can be decorated with stylish flower stands. One has only to freshen the chairs with paint, cut holes in the seats and place large pots of flowers there (these can even be small tin containers).

Today it is fashionable to decorate the kitchen with items that are found in popular cafes or restaurants. These also include slate plates, on which menus are usually written or pleasant wishes for visitors. The most interesting thing is that it is not at all difficult to make such a decor item, and it will not require special costs. All you need is the back of an old chair and slate paint. By the way, young parents should also take this idea, because children love to draw with crayons so much.

It's amazing how many varied and interesting home furnishings can be obtained using only old chairs. In addition, such old furniture with a new life is able to stylishly diversify the interior. Here, for example, a coffee table made of a chair, which is also perfect for the role of a bedside table.
Shelves are never superfluous, wherever they are - in the bathroom, in the living room, in the kitchen, in the hallway or even in the garden. A creative wall shelf will come out of the top of an old chair and will always delight you not only with its functionality, but also with its attractive design.

We have also compiled a selection. It's worth taking a look at!

Restoration methods by decorating the chair

There are several options for decorating the appearance of furniture. The chair can be refurbished in the following ways:

  • staining;
  • lamination;
  • decoupage.

VIDEO: Chair restoration: How to make a chair with your own hands. Master class from Katerina Sanina: design, interior

In many homes, if you search, you can find one or more chairs made of natural wood, which are already out of use, but have not lost their strength. Furniture that has served its life will still come in handy if you find a worthy use for it. For example:

The upper part of the chair back is a ready-made base for a wardrobe hanger. All you need is a hook for hanging it on a special bar in the wardrobe compartment. Saw off the back at the desired height, and screw a hook into the center of the upper crossbar, which can be borrowed from broken plastic hangers or twisted from a thick wire yourself.

The chair is the finished swing seat. We remove the legs and hang the rest of them on cables or chains. Since such a thing is not removed under a canopy, the wood must be protected from swelling with a special paint.

Several manufacturing methods have been invented. You can put several chairs in a row and put a board on their seats, you get a long bench with a back. Two chairs, or rather their backs with rear legs, can be easily turned into the sidewalls of a future bench, and from several thick boards to form a seat. And if you connect the chairs at an angle, you get a great option for a gazebo.

Here you can show all your imagination, because any part of the chair easily turns into a comfortable and beautiful shelf. The easiest trick is to remove the legs and use only the seat and back, simply by attaching the product to the wall at a right angle. The front legs with a part of the seat just as easily turn into a shelf-hanger.

Rocking chair

You will need 2 chairs, one of which (with armrests) will become the base, and the second will serve as runners. To do this, you need to find the so-called "Viennese" version, in which the curved rear legs are one piece with the back. Here they will become runners.

Its base is a wooden box, which is painted in a suitable color, and a large pillow is put inside. The headboard is made from the details of the chair and the foot is decorated. In this way, you can get functional and elegant furniture for cats, dogs and other pets.

For dogs of large breeds, veterinarians do not recommend giving food on the floor; instead, special stands are used. A product from a pet store is not cheap, but from an old chair you can make a stand for everyone to envy. Just saw off the legs to the desired height and you're done.

Prompt! It is more convenient not to put the bowl on the seat, but to insert it into a specially cut hole with a slightly smaller diameter than the feeder.

The model without a back is simpler - we use a seat with shortened legs as a base, and we fasten the runners from the bent legs of Viennese chairs. For the elongated version with a back, you will need another chair.

Advice! Draw a project on paper, indicating the size of each detail, this will help you not to make a mistake when sawing the "raw material".

To get a beautiful result, you need to show the talent of a decorator and restorer. The seat can be removed completely, and a spacious box is inserted into the rim instead. From above it can be closed with a glass or plywood tabletop, making fasteners on furniture hinges. We cover the back with a soft cloth, which will allow you to use it with benefit, for example, to sew an organizer for small things.

We design the bedside table in a similar way, only the back is no longer needed. It is beautiful when the wood is carefully sanded, tinted and varnished. This bedside table will become a true decoration of any interior.

Support for flowers

Chairs made of wood with carved legs and a back look very decorative if you convert their seat into a box or holder for flower pots. The easiest way is to remove the seat, leaving the outer rim to fit the box inside, but you can also cut a hole to a suitable size when the chair is not separable. The back will serve as the basis for attaching the holders into which we insert the pots.

You will need curly legs from chairs already used for various crafts, and also a piece of plywood of a suitable size (for example, 50x40 cm). Plywood can be painted, varnished, and if desired, it is not difficult to apply the decoupage technique, taking as a decor a beautiful napkin, an illustration from a magazine, etc. We fasten (with nails or self-tapping screws) around the perimeter of the plywood sheet at a right angle, the legs of the chairs - 4 in the corners, and distribute the rest at approximately equal distance from each other. We gird the top with the same legs (can be made from pieces).

Prompt! If all legs are different, that's even good, the result will be a unique thing!

There is a chair, sturdy and durable, but boring. We decorate it using decoupage technique. Anything can serve as a decor: colorful napkins and clippings from magazines, contour maps left over from school days, your own drawings on thin paper, etc. We sand the entire surface or only part of it (seat, back) with the finest sandpaper to achieve smoothness. We glue the decor using PVA. We cover the product with transparent furniture varnish. Ready!

This technique is good when we have a large photo, but for disassembly there is a highchair, whose curly parts are not as large as ordinary chairs. From them we collect a rectangular frame, which is easy to fasten with small furniture nails or even PVA glue. The backdrop is made of thick cardboard, and is attached to bent nails. It remains to nail the eyelet and you can hang it!

The backrest, in which there are bars in the form of a lattice, or the central part is a sheet of plywood with perforation - this is an excellent base for the holder. It can be hung next to the dressing table, after having painted it in a color similar to the table - you get a real set.

There is nowhere to break a flower bed, but your soul asks for flowers? It doesn't matter, any chair is a ready-made flower bed in the corner of your yard. We put the chair in the chosen place, take out the seat and insert a plastic box or tub instead of it (so that water does not leak when watering). A flowerbed made of metal chairs looks no worse, and it is better to choose blooming ampel type plants.

A seat from a wooden chair is a ready-made board on which you can write with chalk, and if you paint it in a dark color, the inscriptions will be seen better. At the back we nail the hinges for hanging on the wall, and in the front from the bottom - a rail on which we will put the crayons.

A practical side for a narrow shelf comes out of the shortened top of the back. It is convenient to place bottles with drinks on it. The side will not allow you to accidentally brush off the glass container on the floor.

This design is good when there is little storage space for shoes, and there are a lot of accumulated pairs of shoes and boots. We turn the chair into an organizer. We build a box into the seat where you can put shoes vertically. We screw hooks into the legs of the back and sidewalls of the seat, on which you can simply hang the shoes.

Advice! The more beautiful the fittings are used in work, the more beautiful the finished result will be!
