Do-it-yourself iron door in detail. Do-it-yourself metal door: welding an iron door according to photo drawings, how to weld yourself from a profile pipe video

Entrance doors should not only be beautiful, but also durable, as well as warm and reliable. This combination of qualities is given by metal doors. Only not all of those on the market can boast of reliability - many of the inexpensive ones can be literally opened with a kitchen knife. Really beautiful and reliable steel doors are very expensive. If you have a welding machine and some welding skills, you can make an iron door yourself. Even taking into account the cost of purchasing materials, it will be 30-50% cheaper.

What is necessary

We will be an entrance iron door made of shaped pipes and sheet metal. For work, you will need a flat work surface, a welding machine, a drill, a grinder, it’s nice to have something to measure - a carpenter's square, for example.

Standard metal doors. Approximately this is what we will do

Of the materials you will need:

  • profiled pipe 40 * 40 mm, 40 * 20 mm;
  • a sheet of metal 2 mm thick, the size of a door leaf;
  • metal hinges are strong enough to withstand a weight of about 100 kg;

To "ennoble" the door, you will need paint for metal (preferably hammer enamel), a wooden lath, insulation (foam or mineral wool), plywood, OSB or other similar material, plastic or any other finishing material, a peephole, a lock.

Cook the doors

First, we cook the door frame. We make it from a profiled pipe 40 * 40 mm. Cut off pieces to size. If there is rust on the pipe, clean it. We fold the clean blanks, set the corners, grab them together.

After welding, we check the corners, measure the diagonals. If there is even the slightest deviation, we correct it (hitting the floor with an angle usually helps, the main thing is not to overdo it).

We weld on the hinges. We retreat from the bottom and top by about 20 cm, mark, cook, making sure that they are on the same straight line. The laser level is very useful here, and if it is not there, you have to measure the distances many times in order to set it exactly.

We weld everything, check the diagonals, try on. If everything is normal, you can weld on the cross members - to increase the rigidity of the door leaf. We make them from the remains of a 40 * 20 mm pipe.

We clean all the welding places, removing the beads - everything should be even and smooth. You can grind off the excess with a file, but faster - with the corresponding disc on the grinder.

So that the frame does not "bend" and then there is a place for the installation of the sealing rubber, we raise the frame by welding the metal plates.

The frame inside the frame is set at the desired level (we check with a level or level so that everything is in the same plane), we weld the reciprocal loops.

We put a sheet of metal on the finished frame, mark it. It should go 3-10 mm over the door frame pipe. Only from the side of the hinges, the approach should be 3-5 mm, on the other sides it is possible more. We expose the sheet from the side of the hinges, mark the cutting line, cut it off with a grinder.

After cutting, we process burrs and other irregularities with a file - to an even edge. To speed up the process, you can use a grinder with an emery wheel. Then we lay out the sheet as it should be and lightly grab the frame to the frame, the sheet - also to the frame (not to the frame). The entire structure must be turned over, but it is difficult to do it differently.

We turn over almost finished metal doors and boil the sheet along the perimeter of the frame, then to the intermediate stiffeners. There is no need to make continuous seams - tightness is not needed, we weld in small sections at equal distances. At the same time, we make sure that the pure does not "lead".

Cut off the welded frame from the door frame, turn the doors over and free the welded sheet from the tacks. We clean the places of the former welding. Now the locks can be installed.

Warming and finishing

Next, we are engaged in insulation. Styrofoam with a thickness of 4 cm becomes well into the welded frame of the iron door. We take it of low or medium density, since there will be no load on it. These metal doors took 4 sheets of 1 * 1 m in size.

We cut the PP to size, take a polyurethane foam with a weak expansion (if you take a regular one, the foam will displace it). Having retreated from the edge about 1 cm, we apply it around the perimeter of the rectangle in which we put the foam, we make a few more strips of foam in the middle, we put the insulation. The remaining gaps between the PP and the pipe are also passed through with foam.

It is also possible to glue the insulation on a universal glue that is suitable for metal and polystyrene, for example, "Moment".

To save money, it was decided to use the sheet of oriented strand board available on the farm. Budget finishing is planned - self-adhesive film. As it turned out, this pair is very poorly combined - OSB putty took a lot of time. It would be much easier with plywood (moisture resistant, furniture).

A sheet of OSB is laid on top of the insulation, already made with our own hands. It is fixed around the perimeter with self-tapping screws. First, a hole is drilled under the self-tapping screw, then the fasteners are screwed in.

We drill mounting holes in the door frame - there are two of them on each segment. We paint the frame in a suitable color (enamel is taken in a spray can). The painted frame has to be taken out into the street somehow. We insert long mounting screws into the drilled holes, and drag it outside.

There is only one way out - to putty. We take the putty, spread it, wait until it dries, grind it. Then again - a layer of putty, again sanding. So - until the normal result.

On the second side, we also attach the OSB, but already putty and sanded in advance - it's easier this way. We cut out the holes for the eye-pens, try on everything. Next, we begin to glue the film. In our stores, the widest one is - 90 cm, the doors are clearly wider. Therefore, it was decided to make a finish with an imitation of a panel, for which a rubber self-adhesive furniture molding was purchased.

The film will be glued "curly"

We find the center on the door, set aside 45 cm in both directions, outline a strip. The center strip of the film will be glued here. We wet the surface with water (spray from a spray bottle), carefully, without bubbles, glue the film.

We cut off the missing pieces, we also glue them. We close the joints of the canvases with a molding.

All that remains is to install the handmade metal doors in place. They are installed at the entrance from the covered veranda to the house.

The doors look good. They turned out to be very heavy, cannot be compared with the store ones. Most of the time was spent on finishing. If you choose another option, it will be much faster.

Steel doors can be welded from the corners. One of the options is in the next video.

Metal doors are popular for their reliability and safety. But industrial enterprises charge a significant fee for the manufacture of such structures. And meanwhile, doing all the work with your own hands does not constitute much difficulty - there would be a desire and elementary technical knowledge.

The advantages of homemade products

Making metal structures by hand is more difficult than using professional equipment. But then there are no restrictions imposed by specific models and specifications. There is no risk that substandard materials may be used for the sake of economy, which is often the fault of even large suppliers of finished products. The design and execution ideally meet the expectations of the owner of a home, garage or holiday cottage.

Considerations of economy are also important, especially now, when each ruble gets harder over the years.

Design

There is no point in taking on the manufacture of steel doors without drawings and diagrams. First of all, they measure the height and width of the openings. The collected data is rewritten and an accurate diagram is drawn on it, showing how wide and high the canvas will be. In most cases, you can get by with a 90x200 cm door block, if the dimensions are larger than this bar, an auxiliary fragment is placed on top.

The following options can be used to close the frame:

  • Sheet steel;
  • lattice steel structure;
  • glass detail;
  • deaf fragment;
  • swinging block.

You cannot bypass any element in the project. If it is not specified or specified incorrectly, great difficulties will inevitably arise.

The number of loops included in the project is determined by the massiveness of the product. In almost every case, 2–4 hinges are enough; more complex doors are rarely used for domestic purposes. Be sure to indicate the dimensions of individual structures, and the thickness of the frame sheets, and the type of exterior door finish. It is also important to immediately understand the desired type of metal.

Tools and materials needed

It is the metal that accounts for the main costs of both large manufacturers and private craftsmen. Almost all other materials cost significantly less, with the exception of finishing coatings. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to make a steel entrance structure with your own hands within 15 thousand rubles. For this amount, it is unlikely that it will be possible to purchase even a low-quality handicraft from Asian countries.

Most often, do-it-yourself door structures are made from a professional pipe with a section of 2x4 cm. 18-22 running meters of such a pipe allow making a door block of typical dimensions - 100 cm in width and 200 cm in length.

If a misunderstanding arises, it is worth starting from the sketch, since it will not be difficult to find already calculated product drawings for all occasions. The minimum thickness of metal sheets is 0.25 cm, and the remaining dimensions must match the dimensions of the opening.

When choosing hinges, experienced craftsmen give preference to those in which there is a bearing.

Given the significant weight of the structure, three hinges will clearly work better and more reliably than two.

And metal profile corners, fittings, heat protection and decorative coatings may be required... When working, abrasive wheels and drills, electrodes consume a resource. In addition to the welding machine and a special table for working with it, it will be impossible to do without an angle grinder, a high-quality drill and an electric jigsaw.

If necessary, a hammer, nail puller and a sharpened ax will help to dismantle the old structure. It is more convenient to fasten hardware sometimes with a wrench or screwdriver.

Making measurements

Non-standard dimensions of a do-it-yourself door is an important advantage over serial designs. Professionals in factories charge extra for deviations from the most common dimensions. But first of all, you will have to estimate the actual size of the opening and the door block that should be put into it. Measurements are made with a tape measure and must be recorded on paper: you should not rely on memory in this case. In addition to the size of the canvas, it is also taken into account that a box will stand around its perimeter, which usually has a thickness of 20-30 mm.

Since the width is greater in the area of the loops, and less along the rest of the perimeter of the canvas, you will always need to include in the project the use of additional parts. The widest size is taken into account, since only this condition allows the casing to be applied tightly enough. The height of the openings is measured along the side slopes on both sides. With a very high cavity, it is necessary to reduce the opening or prepare large platbands.

When the height of the hole is small, it is better to cut the wall with a special tool than to make adjustments to the door under construction.

How to make an iron front door with your own hands?

After completing all measurements and choosing the material, tools, you can immediately get down to work. The technology implies a mandatory check of the walls. They should be made of solid block materials or solid concrete.

In the opening with dimensions of more than 150x200 cm, it is recommended to install prefabricated boxes, the top or side of which is covered with an additional strip of metal. The wide recesses are equipped with a pair of glass accessory modules. They will help make the door stronger and decorate it.

The door will have to open outward, not inward, to facilitate care in the event of an emergency.

They begin by laying out the key parts of the box on a steel workbench and cutting them according to the markings. The accuracy of the cuts is checked by trial assembly and evaluation using carpentry corners.

Much attention should be paid to the exact connection of all the diagonals to the corners. The seams remaining after welding are finalized using angle grinders.

Now you need to make blanks for the frame, they use steel corners. Templates during work are rectangular structures of strictly specified thickness. The main gaps from the frame to the box in the area of the castle are approximately 0.5 cm, and on the other three sides of the structure they are taken at 0.3 cm. The profile is marked and cut, put into the box and the accuracy of the diagonal is checked. Side profiles are provided with slots for locks.

In order to weld a door from metal yourself, you need to start work by fixing the corners of the frames and welding the frames at several points around the perimeter. Then a strip metal is welded onto the frame, which holds the skin, and a stiffener is welded into the frame. Immediately after this, you need to clean the resulting seams, mark the canvas.

Now you can cut the sheets with a grinder and weld them to the frame. After that, it is required to insert and weld additional stiffeners.

The place for the installation of the lock is marked directly on the canvas; a well is drilled there and brought to the desired condition with a file. Then the holes for the lock are prepared, the threads are cut.

As soon as the installation of the lock is completed, you can grab the hinges, welding them to the frame of the canvas and to the door frame. It is worth noting that the box needs to be opened and the parts of the hinges must be fixed inside using a welding machine.

Often the work does not end there and a door with a window is built.

In the prepared recess, you can put not only glass, but also a decorative steel grate, made using the cold forging technique. As practice shows, in terms of its ability to transmit light, such a solution is no worse, and in terms of design characteristics, it is even better than a simple glazed hole. If it is required to save heat in the room as much as possible, however, the grille can be combined with a glass unit. If you wish, you can try other design solutions.

Box making process

In addition to the door itself, no matter how convenient and high-quality it is, you will definitely need a box. It is easiest to create it with a woodworking machine, the original component is a planed board. It is worth checking the wood to see if it has dried well, otherwise the whole structure can quickly warp.

The required elements will also be the following:

  • saws;
  • hammers;
  • slats;
  • screwdrivers;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • nails;
  • other metal fasteners.

At the entrance doors, the main part of the box is mainly made of metal, which is welded. But wood has its own advantage - it's ease of processing. But the fibreboard does not last long enough, and soon it will be necessary to change the box. When choosing wood, pay attention to dark spots. If they are, then this indicates a violation of the drying technology. Such defects cannot be masked even with several layers of high-quality paint.

The markup is performed first along the upper, then along the lower boundaries. To avoid mistakes, you need to add the crossbar and the nut, respectively. Having completed the blanks according to the notches made, they are adjusted to the dimensions of the door.

As soon as the hinges are hung and the door is in place, it is adjusted again to eliminate the appearance of gaps. For your information: if some point in the work inspires fear, there are doubts that not everything will be able to be done, then you need to contact professional craftsmen.

Installation of double-leaf doors

Double-leaf doors are placed somewhat differently than single-leaf structures. Moreover, they have their own divisions inside, which must be taken into account. So, some doors with a pair of leaves swing open, while others move apart. If the door has already been installed, it is dismantled as carefully as possible.

To preserve the old boxes, they do this:

  • remove the platbands;
  • remove cement and foam;
  • unscrew screws or cut nails.

After removing the box, remove the remaining leveling layers, for this use a perforator. If the old shell is made according to all the rules and is well preserved, it is left intact, just removing the foam. As in the case of a single-leaf door, you will need to measure the opening. But in addition to it, adjacent planes are measured. The frame of the box is cut at an angle of 45 degrees.

The most practical tool is a miter saw, but if not available, a fine-toothed hacksaw can also be used. Then they cut into the vertical parts of the hinge opening; a router is used for this purpose. A chisel and a hammer will help to replace it as a last resort; and it will be even easier to use overlapping insect loops. Pulling the structure together is done using self-tapping screws. To keep the box intact, before the introduction of the fasteners, holes are prepared 1 mm smaller than the diameter of the screws.

The box in the opening is set exactly at the level, and you need to follow not only the verticals, but also so that the structure does not leave even a small edge the contour of the recess. Having attached the rollers to the canvases, having marked the height of the guides for them, draw a line along the level and screw a bar 4–5 cm thick along it to the wall. The guides are mounted on the bar, and the door is suspended from it. It is always required to reserve the technological gap from the sash to the box.

So that it does not let cold air and precipitation into the room, this gap is filled with foam.

How to make a warm door at home?

But even a hermetically sealed door structure cannot by itself become a reliable barrier to frost. To avoid the negative phenomena associated with this, you will have to insulate it. Most often, foam and polystyrene are used for this, which in production are transformed into plates of various thicknesses. Such materials do not deteriorate when moistened, therefore they are allowed to be used for insulating all rooms, regardless of climatic conditions. The frame is made of dry timber, which should not damage the metal sheets.

The materials are placed in the spaces between the bars or put by surprise. They can be attached both mechanically and with glue.

You should try to keep the gaps separating the insulation from the frame as small as possible.

After finishing the work, they wait for a while and check if any gaps have arisen. A layer of face material is placed on top of the insulation. It is very important that it is not only durable, but also as graceful as possible.

Decoration and decor

Numerous teams of builders and designers are ready to decorate the doors, even those made on their own. But the payment for their services is often excessive, calculated on an arbitrary basis. And at the same time, all the same work can be done with your own hands in the shortest possible time.

Door openings can be covered with the following materials:

  • laminate;
  • decorative stone;
  • clapboard (plastic or wooden);
  • siding.

If the prospect of welding work scares you less than the price tags on the metal entrance doors, you can make it for your home just as well with your own hands. And when compared with Chinese consumer goods, it is also much more reliable.

The detailed instructions below will help you cope with this task. It would seem that the choice on the market is so huge that there is no need to make it yourself. But for many, this process itself can be very interesting, and the opportunity to save money plays a significant role. However, in order to cope with this complex work on your own, desire alone is not enough. At a minimum, you need to have at least a little welding skills and have the necessary tools.

To understand where to start work, what materials you need for this and in what quantity, you need to carefully study the opening. Often, in houses of old buildings, the entrance doors are kept "on parole": if you pull out the box, it turns out that between it and the main wall there was a void, sealed with plaster.

Therefore, you need to clean the opening to its actual size in order to determine the size and design of the future door (see). If the opening is standard (in our reality it is about 900x2000 mm), it will not be so difficult to do it yourself.

If it is much wider, you will have to weld an additional metal frame and fix it to the side of the door. If the opening is higher, then an additional frame is welded over the box. If desired, it will be possible to insert shockproof or armored glass into it.

Having received all the dimensions you are interested in, make a detailed drawing of the design of the future metal door and calculate the required amount of materials.

Tools and materials

In this case, you will need:

  • Steel sheet with a size of 1000x2000 mm and a thickness of 2 mm.
  • Protruba 50x25 mm - 9 r.m. Of these, 6 rm. for the manufacture of boxes and 2-3 r.m. for stiffeners.
  • Steel corner 32x32 mm - 6 rm for the door frame.

For reference. Metal corners and profiled pipes are sold in whole rods of 3 or 6 meters. Consider this when buying so that you do not have to weld one part from two elements. Buy with a margin.

You can sheathe doors with wood panels or planks, stick on PVC foil that will imitate the structure of wood, or trim the doors with soft material. You can also simply paint the canvas, and to improve the appearance, weld some forged decorative elements to the door.

Even a novice craftsman can do this if he knows how to handle a welding machine.

Of course, you won't be able to get a complicated model right away, but making and installing a basic model of an entrance door is quite affordable.

The importance of the front door can hardly be underestimated.

This is not only the first and main line preventing the penetration of dishonest citizens into your home, but also one of the key details of the interior of a residential building.

Sound insulation and room temperature control are two more functions of the entrance metal door.

And if you start a major overhaul in an apartment, then the question of installing a new entrance metal door is one of the first to be decided.

A ready-made door purchased in a store does not at all guarantee that there are no hidden defects in it, and prices are not always affordable there, its adjustment will be difficult, and sound insulation will probably not suit you.

Well, self-made shaped doors are still ahead of you, and we will start with the simplest.

As in other cases, the manufacture of a metal door begins with paperwork, in other words, we have to create a drawing.

In order for the drawing to be accurate and true, you have to decide on the dimensions.

The structural diagram of the entrance door proposed for acquaintance will acquaint you with the names and location of the main units and elements.

Preparing the scheme

A drawing of an entrance metal door is a large-scale diagram of a door leaf, according to which the assembly and installation of the product will be carried out, with the dimensions of the door frame applied to it, the locations of the stiffeners, hinges.

We arm ourselves with a tape measure and take measurements from the doorway.

The standard door size is 90 x 200 cm, if the actual dimensions of the opening are much larger than the data, it makes sense to install a separate unit on top or on the side of the door leaf.

The side block can be made deaf or hinged, and the upper one can be closed with sheet metal, glazed or grilled.

All this is also applied to our drawing.

The dimensions of the door frame should be 2 cm less than the doorway - this will be the mounting gap in which the unit is adjusted to avoid distortions. Below is a sectional diagram of a metal door.

Most often, the door is mounted on 2-4 hinges, their number depends on the weight that your structure has.

Hinges are external and hidden, the second option is more difficult to manufacture and requires certain skills.

Since we are trying to make a "door for beginners", we will focus on the first option.

To evenly distribute the load, the hinges must be made at an equal distance between themselves, and the upper and lower hinges should be located at a distance of 15 cm from the edge of the door.

You can make the stiffeners in any direction - horizontally, vertically or with a mesh, as well as diagonally - everything is at your discretion.

The ribs must be made so that they do not pass in the places where the installation of the lock, peephole, door handle will be carried out.

You determine the number of ribs yourself, it must ensure that the door is not bendable under its own weight, otherwise, after a while, the door will need to be repaired.

So, the drawing is ready.

We prepare materials and tools

Having decided on the dimensions, we prepare a set of tools that we will need for work, calculate the amount of materials needed and go to the store.

We offer you an approximate list of tools:

  • welding machine;
  • drill;
  • a set of screwdrivers or screwdriver;
  • Bulgarian;
  • clamps;
  • files or grinder;
  • trestle or door assembly table;
  • measuring instruments (corner; tape measure, etc.);
  • building level.

For a metal door of a standard size, you will need:

  • steel sheet 2-3 mm thick - 100 x 200 cm;
  • metal corner 3; 2 x 3; 2 cm - 6 r.m. (for the door frame);
  • profile pipe 5 x 2; 5 cm - about 9 r.m. (for door frame and stiffeners);
  • metal plates 40 x 4 cm with a thickness of 2-3 mm - at least 4 pieces (for attaching the door frame to the walls);
  • door hinges;
  • lock;
  • fittings;
  • anchor bolts;
  • anti-corrosion coating;
  • paint for metal;
  • polyurethane foam.

Choose the fittings and the lock according to your taste. Manufacturers offer a large selection of locks, the most reliable of which are three-sided.

A lock with crossbars on three sides is, of course, more difficult to install, but breaking it is also not easy.

If you are making a metal door for a utility room (shed), then it is allowed to make a lightweight economical option - in this case, a thick reinforcing bar is used for stiffeners instead of a profile pipe.

Door assembly

The work on assembling a metal door is carried out in several stages.

Putting the box together

It is necessary to make blanks for the box from the professional pipe, cut the corners inward at an angle of 90 °, lay out the corner with a rectangle, fix it with clamps and grab it with welding.

Then we check the perpendicularity of the sides with a square, and also measure the distance between the pairs of angles opposite on the diagonal and compare, the obtained measurements should be equal.

If there is a bias, then additional adjustment is required. If everything is in order, then we carry out the final welding and grinding of the seams.

We will use the same scheme a little later to assemble the door frame.

We weld metal mounting plates to the box.

We collect the door leaf

Here we need a new measurement - we take measurements along the inner walls of the door frame.

Having stepped back 7-10 cm on each side, we get the actual dimensions of the frame of our metal door.

We cut the sections of the required length from the corners and perform preliminary processing, similar to the blank for the door frame.

We put the prepared corners inside the finished box, forming a rectangle, and carry out a control measurement for the correctness of the design.

If necessary, we make a fit and weld the joints tightly.

We turn to the manufacture of the door leaf, for which we lay the steel sheet on the table (goats), place the finished frame on top and draw a contour of the required dimensions, retreating from the outer edges of the frame by about 10 cm.

We cut the sheet along the contour, grind the cut points and weld it to the frame.

Be careful not to weld with a continuous continuous seam to avoid deformation.

It is much more functional to weld in sections about 30 mm long at intervals of 15-20 mm in the direction from the center to the edges of the product.

Take your time, periodically let the door cool down, otherwise hidden defects may appear, and the door will have to be repaired in a short time.

We put the door leaf on the table with the outside side down, on top you need to install the door frame.

Using spacers 2-5 mm thick around the entire perimeter, the position of the box relative to the frame is adjusted.

In this gap, the installation of a sealing tape will later be performed, which will increase the qualities of the door, such as sound insulation.

On the finished door leaf, we make cuts for the inner lock and, if necessary, under the peephole, drill holes for attaching the door handle, carefully grind the edges of the holes.

The size of the cut for the lock should be such that its installation is free of play, but provides access to the lock if repair is required.

We will embed the lock itself and install the fittings a little later.

If you use a padlock, then you need to install on the same level of the door leaf and the box lining for it.

We fasten half of the door hinges with grooves to the door frame, weld the second parts of the hinges (with pins pointing up) in the appropriate places to the door frame so that they are located on the same axis, we grind the welding places.

Some hinges are equipped with holes for lubrication, in which case their installation should provide access to the technological holes and the ability to remove the door if repairs need to be made.

We wipe the metal structure from dust and shavings so that hidden defects do not appear after painting, apply anti-corrosion protection, on top of which, after drying, you can tint or make a decorative finish.

You can familiarize yourself with the manufacturing process of an entrance metal door in more detail and visually using the video below.

We mount the door

We place the door frame in the opening and adjust it using a plumb line and a level so that no repairs have to be made in the near future.

Having achieved the correct position of the box, we carry out the installation, fixing the steel hinges to the wall using anchors, we hang the door leaf on the hinges.

We check - if the installation is done correctly, then the metal door will close and open without distortions, without catching on the door frame, and the hinges will move effortlessly.

At the final stage, the peephole is installed, the lock is inserted and the handle is installed.

The lock and handle are bolted to the door so that later they can be repaired or replaced without any problems.

After completing the installation of the lock, we rub the end sides of the crossbars with chalk and make marks on the door frame. We cut out the metal according to the resulting marks, forming grooves for the crossbars.

For additional protection of the lock from possible burglary, we weld a piece of the corner to the door leaf at the exit points of the crossbars, it also makes sense to reinforce the door leaf at the place where the lock is installed by welding a 6 mm thick steel sheet from its inner side.

At the same stage, the operation of the lock is adjusted, the density of the door closing.

Another video for those who make repairs gives very relevant recommendations on how to properly strengthen the door and cut in the lock, how it is adjusted.

Now you can start finishing.

At the very beginning of the article, it was already mentioned that the metal door at the entrance to the house should perform some functions, such as sound insulation, preventing foreign odors and low temperature air from entering the room.

The most practical, effective and cheap insulating material for door decoration is generally recognized as ordinary foam.

We cut the polystyrene into pieces of the required size and put them without gaps into the space of the door leaf between the stiffeners.

For better sealing, we will use polyurethane foam, with which we seal the space between the foam and the stiffeners, around the lock, and also fill the inner space of the stiffeners through pre-drilled holes.

Sound insulation is also excellently provided by mineral wool.

From the inside, a metal door can be sheathed with wooden slats, MDF panels or other finishing material, and we glue a sealing tape around the perimeter of the door leaf.

We foam the mounting gaps between the door frame and the slopes of the doorway. Our design is ready for use!

Now you can be sure that there are no hidden defects in this design, the quality of the entrance metal door is 100%, and doing the work with your own hands made it possible, by performing repairs, to save a considerable amount from the family budget.

The installation of an entrance metal door is demonstrated to us by the masters in this video tutorial.

It's no secret that today such an element as an entrance metal door is not a luxury, but an obligatory attribute of any living space, including a private house or apartment, as well as various administrative and office buildings.

Thanks to the modern development of technology and the emergence of innovative materials, you can personally design any, even the most complex, item needed in everyday life. The metal door is no exception: if you have some building skills, this element can be equipped on your own, thereby saving yourself the need to overpay for the installation of a ready-made model. In addition, it is much more pleasant to equip a home at your own discretion, without using stereotyped patterns. Therefore, you should consider in more detail how competently it should be.But first you should pay attention to the list of advantages that this functional part of the house possesses.

The main advantages of a metal door

Thanks to the ability to use modern insulation materials, this element can provide excellent protection from noise and from the ingress of cold into the room, which is especially important in cold climates. Insulated metal doors are a guarantee that you will not freeze in your house.

Another reason to personally create such an indispensable attribute of everyday life is an excellent appearance, which makes it possible to turn a seemingly standard part of a home into a unique and unique element with high aesthetic indicators.

Perhaps the main advantage of a metal door is its high resistance to burglary, coupled with the ability to install additional protective equipment (various limiters, etc.). This will completely protect the home from the penetration of unwanted persons and save the nerves of its owners.

It is these advantages that are the key factors influencing the adoption of such a decision,

As in any other business, you must first perform all the necessary calculations. When making an element such as a metal door, you first need to take measurements of the opening with your own hands. In accordance with them, the door leaf and frame will be designed. It is important to remember that it is extremely important to subtract 2 cm from all the parameters obtained during the measurement process. This small gap will subsequently make it possible to correct and align the door in the opening. Measurements are required to be performed for the entire length and width of the desired hole, that is, starting from the base in the form of brick or concrete, and not from plaster. This must be done this way, because the finishing material can be applied in a thick layer, and if the calculation is incorrect, the parameters of the finished door may not coincide with the real indicators of the installation site.

Tools and materials for work

The equipment required for the hand-made device of a metal door includes the following set of tools:

  • welding table;
  • angle grinder equipped with a metal wheel;
  • welding machine;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill with multiple drills;
  • tape measure and other measuring devices;
  • and screwdrivers.

As for the materials directly from which the door will consist, their set is as follows:

  • metal corners for a box or a steel pipe with a square profile;
  • sheathing material in the form of plywood, veneer, boards, etc.;
  • metal sheet with a minimum thickness of 1.5 mm;
  • door hinges;
  • fittings (handle, locks);
  • fasteners (screws, bolts, etc.).

Door frame design

It is absolutely possible to do it yourself, while all the work should start with making a box for it. This element consists of securely welded corners, which form its basis. It should be remembered that after installation of vertically and horizontally located parts, it is imperative to leave gaps that will be required in the future.

It is necessary to place a corner or a square profile on the welding table and cut it in accordance with the required parameters. The finished parts must be laid in a rectangle and all the parameters must be checked again.

It is very important that all angles are exactly 90 °, therefore it is necessary to carefully study the indicators of the diagonals, measuring the distance from one end to the other. At the end of all calculations, you can start welding the door frame. At this stage, it is allowed to make cuts in it for this, use a grinder.

When installing an element such as a metal door, do-it-yourself drawings should be done as correctly as possible so that the design fully corresponds to the previously drawn up project. Otherwise, the result of the work may turn out to be completely different from what was originally intended.

Door leaf installation

First of all, you should clearly define the size of the potential canvas. To do this, you need to measure the parameters of the inner part of the box and leave a gap of about 0.5 cm on each side.It is on the basis of these indicators that a metal door should be made with your own hands, the drawings for which, in turn, help to do all the work as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Next, you need to weld a frame consisting of corners, intended for the canvas. The process of its manufacture resembles in its actions the creation of a box. From the inside, parts of the corner must be welded to the frame at the same distance from each other. These elements will act as stiffeners.

The next procedure that should be performed when making such a house element as a metal door with your own hands is to cut out a steel sheet. It must correspond to the parameters of the frame, while it is extremely important to observe an allowance of 1 cm on each side, as well as 0.5 cm on the hinge side. This sheet must be welded evenly to the door base, while remembering to remove any burrs that appear and fix uneven seams with a grinder. On this, the manufacture of the door leaf can be considered complete.

Fixing a metal door on hinges

Welding these elements is required according to a special scheme. As a rule, one of the hinge parts is first attached to the box, which has a special pin. In this case, the second part is fixed directly on the canvas. It is very important to pay attention to the drawing of a metal door, according to which all dimensions should be correctly calculated and the required distance should be measured for mounting the hinges.

It is imperative that both of these functional parts match perfectly. This will not only avoid skewing the entire structure, but will also improve its tightness and extend its service life.

When installing insulated metal doors, do not forget that for laying the insulation, it is also necessary to leave some free space inside the canvas. This procedure will be more complicated, but such a measure will definitely protect the entire structure from cold penetration.

At the end of the installation of the hinges, it is necessary, if necessary, to clean the seams, and then paint the finished structure.

Equipping a metal door with fittings

Thinking about how to make a metal door of the highest quality, do not forget that in order to create a reliable model, special attention should be paid to such an important matter as installing and fixing the lock mechanism.

For this work, you will need to purchase two samples of different types, which during installation need to be positioned as conveniently as possible. It is very important that each of the elements of the castle matches the other, and the whole system interacts smoothly and easily. A drawing of a metal door, of course, will not be able to reflect this, but it will be much better if, during the opening, the mechanism does not create unnecessary sounds (squeak, rattle, etc.).

After that, it is recommended to cut a special hole in the door leaf, intended for the installation of a good and modern door peephole, which has a wide viewing angle and, if necessary, closes. This completes the work with the fittings.

Installation of a metal door in the opening

To insert a ready-made door structure into the opening, it will take the strength of at least two people, since it will be problematic to do this work alone. In addition, you need to pay special attention to the following points:

  • The box should be geometrically even. It will be possible to carry out all measurements using the building level.
  • The structure must be fixed securely and tightly.
  • All the gaps formed between the wall and the door must be sealed with polyurethane foam.

The installation of the metal door is completed with another check of the reliability of the lock mechanism. In addition, you should make sure that the system opens easily and without any interference in the desired direction and closes just as easily.

A good addition to the aesthetic appearance will be the device as well as the design of its slopes. Such procedures will not only make the structure more beautiful, but also improve its technical characteristics, improving thermal and sound insulation.

Working with such a modern and necessary attribute of the house as a metal door, you can not only make the model itself, but also decorate it beautifully with your own hands.

Here, as always, the design is based solely on the preferences and tastes of the owners, but one should not forget about such an important factor as the operating conditions, since it is far from always possible to decorate different doors in the same way due to some external factors: climate, type of building, etc.

Alternatively, you can use veneer or MDF, polymer painting is also suitable. This type of finish, such as door trim with a special film that protects against external mechanical damage, is gaining more and more popularity.

One way or another, you can arrange a metal door in different ways, but the main thing is that this element clearly fulfills its functions and is able to serve for a long time and reliably.
