Of course, no one forces us to retrain as a blacksmith in order to forge all the necessary parts using the ancient method that was used several decades ago. But we still need an elementary list of welded and locksmith equipment:

  • Electric drill with a set of reliable drills.

Of course, no one offers to forge a plow in a forge, as was done many decades ago. However, you cannot do without elementary locksmith equipment.

The base is welded from steel sheet with a thickness of at least 3 mm. This knot is the first to meet soil resistance.

The rack is a structural element that bears the entire load. Therefore, select a strip of at least 8 mm thick for it.

Welding must be done in two passes, on each side of the joint.

Wings can be made thinner from the sheet. 2 mm is enough. It is important to observe the dimension, otherwise it will not be possible to correctly dock the wings with the base.

The wings bend to any pattern - a steel pipe of a suitable diameter will do.

Due to the concave geometry and the presence of welded seams, the structure is rigid.

The adjustable lister hiller is just as easy to make yourself. The difference is that the wings are pivotally attached to the base, and there are rods in the tail section for adjusting the angle.

The technology and the thickness of the workpieces are the same as in the previous model. The versatility of the attachment increases significantly.

To the already finished design, it is only necessary to modify the traction device. It makes sense to make the mounts movable so that the width of the rows can be adjusted.

Disc hillers

The advantage of this type of attachment is in synchronization with the capabilities of the walk-behind tractor. You can adjust the speed and power, which are mutually exclusive. Since the resistance in the soil is small, there is no need to use a more powerful walk-behind tractor.

Another advantage is that by choosing the right size of the discs, you can spud potatoes at different stages of growth.

You can make such a canopy yourself. The only difficulty is in molding the discs. Most often, used cutters from a collective farm seeder are used. Having traveled through the villages, it is fashionable to find inexpensive good copies. It is better to mount on bearings with installed oil seals. The slide bushings will wedge.

If one disc gets stuck, the walk-behind tractor can turn to the side. Setting up the disc hiller consists in selecting the tilt angles and immersion depth. For this, the bracket is equipped with bolt-retained movable elements.

With their help, the soil from the row spacing is not so efficiently lifted, but the tines additionally loosen the soil, and you can set a not so sharp angle between the discs.

Propeller hillers

Two forces are used - translational motion and rotation. An active hiller for a walk-behind tractor requires the unit to have two gears and a power take-off shaft. The processing efficiency increases significantly, and the cost of the equipment rises accordingly. Therefore, just like the previous models, propeller-type hillers can and should be made independently.

Again, nothing but high-quality iron, a grinder and a welding machine is required. The axles are fitted to the walk-behind tractor, the rest of the parts are simply arc-welded.

The advantage of this device is that it performs two tasks in one pass of the walk-behind tractor.

The row spacing is loosened, part of the land is simultaneously thrown onto the rows. That is, hilling with loosened soil occurs.

Adjustment of the propeller-type hiller is not required, only the distance between the nozzles is set. Different degrees of loosening and hilling heights are set by the shape of the lugs and installation angles relative to the axis of rotation.

You can make a pair of bushings with brackets, and a set of blades for different types of hilling. It will be enough to quickly change the hooks, and you will have a new tool every time, practically at no additional cost.

Practical setting up a hiller on a walk-behind tractor

The theory of the operation of the hilling device is described in textbooks for summer residents in such detail - that even a person who is far from agriculture can figure out the settings. However, in practice, the saying “it was smooth on paper, but they forgot about the ravines!” Works.

The peculiarities of the soil, the current weather, the quality of sharpening of the hillers - this is not the whole list of factors that affect the quality of plowing. Not to mention the characteristics of the walk-behind tractor.

Therefore, before entering the garden, you need to walk the technique on the "virgin soil".

It is desirable that the characteristics of the soil be the same as on the cultivated soil. During the "work" you, firstly, will feel how the attachment is behaving, and secondly, set the correct angles and depth of processing.

It is equally important to choose the correct plowing (hilling) speed. The relationship between speed and power when using disc nozzles was described above. The same applies to other devices. Sometimes an inferior homemade hiller, at the right speed, works wonders. And an expensive active baking powder simply scatters the earth on the sides.

Hilling agricultural crops allows you to more successfully maintain soil fertility, increases productivity and decorative qualities of plants, and reduces the cost of pesticides and irrigation. It is impossible to get a good harvest of a number of crops, especially potatoes, without hilling. Hilling is especially effective in personal subsidiary plots and small commercial farms, the soil in which is usually depleted and used intensively. However, hilling the rows with a hoe (hoe) is an extremely tedious work, and the cost of ready-made hillers, manual and for motoblocks, is frankly not encouraging. Choosing a prototype

Hilling is generally a type of soil cultivation and is carried out most often with an ordinary cultivator with replaceable working bodies. An exception is hilling potatoes. In order for the potato to form more large nutritious tubers, its rows are made wide (0.5-0.6 m), and the bushes are spud high. Therefore, the potato hiller is a specialized attachment. Active or Passive?

In large agricultural technology, they often work as active hillers, the working bodies of which are set in rotation from the power take-off shaft of the traction unit. Motoblocks and mini tractors for private household plots and small farms are on sale, but in practice it turns out that an active hiller increases the productivity and quality of work for them insignificantly, but its cost and fuel consumption increase significantly, and the engine resource is developed faster.

The reason is the engine. There are no mini-potatoes or tomatoes and will not be - we need edible ones. The mini-hiller should turn over the soil per meter of row as much as the large one; the same amount of energy is needed for this. It is not a problem to select 10 kW for a 5-body hiller from a 100 kW diesel engine, but giving 2 kW to a single-body engine of 6-10 kW will be already at the limit of possibilities.

There is one more essential circumstance. Tractor diesel engines of a special design, although this is noticeable by eye only to a specialist in motor-builders. Their liter power is small, but the engines themselves are very responsive, with a soft external characteristic, therefore, the power take-off to the mounted unit has little effect on the specific fuel consumption in g / kW * h. It is difficult to put the same motor on a walk-behind tractor already because the required performance characteristics are obtained only with a sufficiently large engine displacement. But even if this obstacle can be overcome, the motor will still turn out to be too expensive, heavy and cumbersome.

Large agricultural holdings consume tons of fuel; Private household plots and small farms - liters. But the engine of the walk-behind tractor must also keep a uniform tractive effort, adapting itself to the inhomogeneities of the soil, because processing flaws are unacceptable in any case. Therefore, mini-agricultural machinery is equipped with motors, carburetor or fuel-injected motors, deliberately voracious and designed for the speed of movement of the unit, approx. equal to the walking speed. Thus, it is possible to minimize the costs of mechanization as a whole, but the external characteristics of the engine, necessary for a “painless” power take-off, are no longer obtained: the engine overstrains, burning an unreasonable amount of fuel and itself. Therefore, further we will restrict ourselves to considering only passive hillers (without transferring power directly to the working body), which load the source of tractive effort as little as possible.

Motor or yourself?

Hilling can be carried out in half a row (top right in the figure at the beginning), when each bed is wrapped in earth in 2 passes, and immediately in a row (bottom left in the same place). Hilling in 2 passes in half a row is useful only for individual crops grown on a thin fertile layer in conditions of insufficient moisture: a dip on the crest of the dump prism serves as a moisture trap. Effective hilling of potatoes is carried out only at once in a row.

Manual hilling by one worker is possible only in half a row on light, loose, poorly moistened soils, up to 30-35 cm wide.Already for hilling potatoes on ordinary garden soil without mechanical traction, at least two are needed (item 1 in the figure below ): the front creates the actual traction, and the rear holds the furrow and working depth. A great exercise for feminists who want to prove themselves as good as vile male harassers. But liberal-tolerant ladies prefer public actions, on the Internet or in kind. Maybe because there is no useful work to be done there? And for a useless one, you can bargain for a higher payment, tk. 100% reliable criteria for assessing unproductive labor are impossible in principle. But back to the topic.

The presence of a walk-behind tractor with a power of 0.5-1 kW will make it possible to hilling potatoes in a row, pos. 2 in Fig. Motoblock Neva, etc. pulls a 2-body hiller for a working width of up to 0.8 m, pos. 3, according to the scheme 0.5 row + 1 row + 0.5 row. On any mini-tractor, you can attach a 3-body hiller of the same type (pos. 4), for processing 0.5 + 1 + 1 + 0.5, or a 2-body for processing 1 + 1. Labor productivity in this case increases, per 1 pass, 2-3 times compared to hilling in a row, but the cost of purchasing special equipment grows significantly. Disc or share?

In large agricultural technology, at least 10 types of hillers are used. There are hundreds of patents for this type of attachments for cultivating the land, and everything is being added. But, taking into account the possibilities of home technologies and the requirement to work also on the muscular traction of a person, the choice of a prototype turns out to be small: this is a hiller or a general-purpose plow, or a disc for potatoes. For more details on both, see below, but for now let's see in what conditions which of them is best suited. The determining factor is the granulometric composition and physical properties of the soil. If your site is on loose, non-sticky sandy or sandy loam soil (which, as you know, is best for potatoes), then you can, without further ado, build a manual mini-hiller for light soils, which you can work with alone, see, for example. video:

In all other cases, it will be necessary to take into account the peculiarities of the weapons of the previously selected types. For a plow hiller, they are as follows:


The disc hiller has a trace. peculiarities:

  1. Requirements for the qualifications of the worker are minimal: a properly configured disc hiller (see below) automatically keeps the specified processing parameters.
  2. On light loose soils, less tractive effort is required than for a plow.
  3. On soils of medium and heavier severity, the situation is reversed.
  4. On muddy, heavy alluvial, etc. the disc hiller will not last sticky soil and the tractor - the engine will stall, the hitch will break or the implement will break.
  5. On soils optimal for potatoes, high hilling immediately in a full row with a sharp prism ridge is possible manually.
  6. The working width of the single-row disc hiller is up to 630-650 mm.
  7. High hilling in 2 half-rows is possible: discs that go close to the root ball, or roll along the roots, or damage them imperceptibly for plants.
  8. Having bumped into an obstacle, the working bodies roll over it. In this case, a slight flaw is possible, but there is no forced interruption in work.
  9. It works just as well with a winch, with an internal combustion engine or electric, as with a straight line.

Finally, it is necessary to take into account the fact that potatoes are an excellent insurance crop in a farm of any direction. Potatoes cannot be called the record holder for profitability, but the demand for “second bread” is stable, and the keeping quality of potato tubers makes it possible to realize the harvest with the greatest possible profit. Therefore, a significant share of the total area is allocated for potatoes in integrated agricultural enterprises. Which one, this is a question of the economy in relation to specific local conditions, but first of all it makes sense to make a disc hiller. An exception is the case if your area on the ground is heavier than average, and you have not yet acquired mechanical traction.

Disk

The device of a disc hiller for potatoes is shown in Fig. below; its working bodies rotate on the move under the action of friction against the ground. However, in case of self-production for a small private economy, this unit can be significantly simplified by setting the vertical angle of inclination (in a motorist way - camber of the discs) fixed at 30 degrees at an angle of attack (negative convergence) of 0 degrees, or by leaving the discs vertical. In the first case, when adjusting the hiller to the desired angle of attack, the inclination of the discs will also slightly change, but when walking on foot this is insignificant and even convenient: the tool is set up by one turn of the discs.

It's about processing speed. The maximum possible, which does not gradually kill soil fertility, is theoretically 20-26 km / h. Acceleration of the movement of the implement gives a double fuel economy: by optimizing the operating mode of the internal combustion engine of the traction unit and reducing the processing time of the field of a given area. Considering that, according to the most optimistic forecasts, oil suitable for diesel fuel remains on Earth for 50-60 years, and agricultural machinery consumes up to 20% of heavy motor fuels produced in the world, this is a matter of vital importance, over which teams of highly qualified specialists are fighting.

Note: light, low-sulfur shale oil is suitable for gasoline for passenger cars (which are already beginning to be replaced by electric vehicles), but diesel fuel, jet fuel and fuel oil for ship power plants cannot be obtained from it. Almost all known reserves of heavy oils are concentrated (in descending order) in Saudi Arabia, Russia and Iran; dark oil fields in the USA and Venezuela are practically depleted. Moreover, their size in the Russian Federation is not exactly known - Russian specialists get off with general comments on direct questions that, they say, many potentially oil-bearing areas have not yet been properly explored. Why they keep silent, it is quite understandable, this is information of the greatest strategic importance, more than the nuclear-laser-stealth-hypersonic secrets all together.

The "real" disc cultivator shown in fig. above, it is adjusted to the maximum possible travel speed on the given soil. But in a private household or on a small farm, in general, it does not matter, it will take, say, 2 or 2.5 liters of low-octane gasoline for hilling and the processing will take 1 hour 30 or 40 minutes, but it will be much easier to make a hiller.

This is an old, well-tested still Soviet amateur design, fragments of which, scattered across the expanses of the Russian Internet, are brought together here. Its distinctive feature is the presence of scrapers that clean off adhered soil from the discs. Where needs to be finalized

The weak points of the described design today are:

  • the disks themselves - they must be made of ductile carbon steel;
  • scraper - the material is the same, but it cannot be bent at home: the thermal tempering will take place, and the scraper will bend itself, and not clean;
  • disc hub - works in the toughest conditions.

Disk

The authors of the original design recommended that the discs and scrapers be taken from agricultural machinery. It was easy for them to advise that - then both were lying underfoot on any collective / state farm farm. Alas, now is not the time. Although, of course, not alas - what happened then, we all experienced the hard way. Now, of course, buying discs for a hiller is not a problem. Problems appear later - with the quality of the material and the hub, see below. With the price too - a knowingly high-quality disk for a hiller for a walk-behind tractor is about the floor of a whole new attachment, or even more. So we need to find ways to make a good, durable disc for the hiller with our own hands.

The disc profile is simple: it is a spherical segment. The boom of its deflection (distance from the base to the pole) for working with walking speed should be approx. 6% of the diameter. You can double as much, then on light loose soils the blade prism will form better, but the tractive effort will increase.

Material - ductile carbon steel not worse than St44. Disc thickness (not to be confused with deflection boom) 2-4 mm; the better the steel, the thinner the disc can be and the easier it will be to pull the hiller (or less gasoline will gobble up the engine of the walk-behind tractor). For the same purpose, the cutting wedge is sharpened from the inside by 3-5 degrees; this can be done with a cylindrical abrasive cutter tucked into an electric drill.

Where can I get it?

Yes, this steel is no worse than St44. Domestic gas cylinder bottoms and boiler tops are not suitable. They are viscous, but low-carbon, so that they hold pressure (have a high enough yield point) without the danger of sudden destruction. Unfortunately, their material is not adapted to abrasive, alternating and shock loads: the disks will quickly become blunt, and soon they will even be crumpled.

Scrapers

Old rubbish will help out with scrapers: they can be made from pieces of springs; this is again what you need, with a large margin. Since it is impossible to bend spring steel in a home workshop without depriving it of its strength, toughness and elasticity, the scrapers are simply cut out with a grinder. Discs are made according to the radius of curvature of the spring, because that of the disk itself is not critical, see above. It is only necessary to take into account that the gap between the scraper and the disc is needed within 2-5 mm, depending on the stickiness (adhesion) of the soil.

Hub

It is precisely because of the hub that it is strongly discouraged to buy discs for the hiller (especially on the Internet): most of them with one sliding bearing and are loose literally in the first bed. The disc coulter hub for the hiller must sit on a pair of nylon plain bearings (see figure on the right). "Balls", bronze and even fluoroplastic are not suitable, it's all in the ground and dust. Therefore, the hub bushing is tightly closed at the ends with threaded caps, and its inner groove is regularly stuffed with a mine shaft, etc. heavy duty grease. The sleeve is split on the shaft. That, of course, makes it difficult to remove / install the disk, but any other mounting of its working conditions will not withstand.

Note: on garden soil, it is somewhat heavier (denser) than usual, simple disc hillers without separate adjustment of the inclination of the discs are sometimes squeezed up on the move. Plow

The device of a 2-row plow hiller for a walk-behind tractor is shown in Fig.:

Gardeners often call the plow-eared hiller because of its dump wings. Its base frame is no different from that of a universal cultivator; Yes, in fact, this is a cultivator with replaceable working bodies. Body Type 1 (furrow, plower) is intended for furrowing (plowing of furrows); Type 2 actually for hilling. Type 1 wings are rigidly fixed; the range of Type 2 dumps is adjustable. Body Type 2 is also equipped with a field board that sets the depth of the working body: less on heavy soils, more on light soils; in the same way, the volume of the dump prism is regulated, i.e. hilling height. The principle of operation of both bodies is the same: the opener knife cuts the soil and transfers it to the share, which divides the cut layer in two. The only difference is the work of the wings and dumps. The wings simply deflect the soil a little to the sides and smooth out the tip of the blade. Dumps (no longer soil, but a hiller share), on the contrary, form the most even prism with a sharp ridge.

It's all about the ploughshare

Operational adjustment of the plow hiller for the processing conditions is not performed. Instead, replaceable plowshares are placed on the carrier (s) of the frame.

The plow share (item 1 in the figure) is not adjustable to the working width: it is 20-25 cm. It is the direct heir of the old peasant plow (see figure on the right). It is easiest to pull the hiller with a plow share in narrow rows on light or ordinary garden soil. In addition, the plow share is suitable for shallow plowing, weeding, and digging of potatoes - but not on light sandy soils, where the potatoes “scatter” large, tasty tubers widely and deeply.

A typical plow hiller is a lister, with lister dumps of an adjustable span, pos. 3 and 4 in Fig. above. Lister in English to list; just list without a preposition indicating that it is a verb (there are no such verbs in purely inflected Russian language), it is a list and a few additional meanings. The width of capture of the lister hiller is the maximum possible for this type of implements, up to 450 mm. Potatoes, as mentioned above, are planted in wide rows. It is very difficult to pull a lister hiller with such a range of dumps, and then it will not form the prism of the dump as needed. Therefore, potatoes are spud with a chisel hiller (pos. 5). A chisel in a general agricultural sense is a knife that performs preliminary or additional tillage. There is some analogy here with tearing the fabric: it is difficult to break a whole cut in width, because its edges are covered in a special way specifically against this; so is the soil cemented by plant roots. But it is necessary to slightly cut the edge of the fabric, and the child will tear it "with a whistle"; such a pioneering cut of the soil makes a cheeser. For better loosening of the soil and the formation of a high peaked prism, the ploughshare of chizer hillers is often made split (see the figure below): the springy “feathers” of the wings (which are also called chisers), under the impact of lumps of soil, additionally loosen it and then discard it. The advantage of chisel plow hillers for potatoes is that only an underground knife-arrow needs to be made of high-quality viscous carbon steel, and all other parts can be made of ordinary structural steel; complex profiling of the chisel, the actual share and dumps are also not required.

Do you need a profile?

The share surface profile is the determining factor for the fuel consumption of the traction unit during plowing and hilling with a plow hiller. The role of energy savings in agricultural technology was mentioned above, therefore, entire scientific institutes are engaged in profiling the plowshares of agricultural implements. The development of a new profile that provides savings of 2-3% over current consumption is considered a major achievement. But it is very difficult to make a "really" profiled plow share with your own hands, and it is also said above why in private household plots and small agricultural farms, when processing at walking speed, fuel economy fades into the background. As for the tractive effort (this is already the main thing for a manual hiller), at the same speed, careful profiling of the share reduces it insignificantly; almost imperceptible. But there are no foundries with a cupola and a stamping press for 2-5 thousand tons or more in a home workshop, and bending and punching out the most common structural steel with a thickness of 2 mm or more is exhausting work. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to make a do-it-yourself plow hiller with a simplified profile share.

Examples of constructions

In the Russian zone of open ground cultivation for potatoes from home-made plow hillers, lister with a simplified share (s) and chisel are applicable. Which one to do is determined by the nature of the soil of your site. We do not touch chernozems and other highly productive soils: they are not allotted for summer cottages, private household plots and small farms; if you have such happiness, then you need to work as an active hiller. On gray, brown and brown soils common in the Central Lane and in the south of Siberia, potatoes do not give record yields, but their rows can be narrowed to the limit of 50 cm - the roots of the bush will not disperse far, and there will be no tangible benefit from very high hilling. But another variant of potato luck is also possible. When the last great glacier melted, streams from it in the Valdai region merged with a river up to 200 km wide (!). For the first time, the existence of such a river was proved by alluvial deposits on the Ergeni Upland, and geologists called it the Ergen River, and the sediments remaining from it were called Ergeni. Ergeni are widespread in the European part of the Russian Federation. For example, in the Voronezh region. literally across the road from more than a meter thick black soil, God knows where in the width a strip of thin grayish earth on loose sandy loam or sand can begin - this is crap, stretching from here to the Dnieper; Chernihiv and Sumy regions with their famous potatoes (and unbearably disgusting moonshine from them) are almost entirely located on ergeny. Potatoes grow well on yergeny, but you need to plant them in wide rows, and spud them with a chisel or disc hiller.

Lister

There is not a single detail of double curvature in the product, and only a knife is made of high-quality steel (det. 5 in the figure). The share itself is a piece of steel angle from 40x40x2. The dumps are attached to it on card hinges. Blades curved in plan (item 2 in the figure) made of sheet steel from 2 mm can be further simplified by making faceted ones, as shown at the top left in Fig. In this case, more tractive effort is not required, and the quality of cultivation of ordinary garden land will not noticeably deteriorate.

Chisel

It is also possible to make the most plowshares using it; shown in Fig. sizes and sections are enough for this. Only an arrow-knife is made of durable viscous carbon steel (a piece of a spring, a part of an autodisk, etc.); its cutting edge is sharpened on a simple wedge with a point angle of approx. 20 degrees. Blades span - up to 550 mm, they are made of sheet steel with a thickness of 2 mm. First, you need to make a life-size model of a share out of packaging cardboard, etc. light sheet material, and on it precisely fit the wings to each other, maintaining the specified dimensions. The model is then disassembled and parts of it are used as templates for nesting sheet metal. The cut workpieces are bent to match along the weld line and tack welded. Next, the wings are carefully bent to the desired opening angle, complete symmetry, and the seam is completely welded.

Fully self-pulling

If you are just planning to buy a walk-behind tractor, and you need to huddle potatoes, a manual plow hiller with the possibility of converting to mechanical traction is suitable for you. At the same time, the flexible rope strap is replaced with a rigid rake, and the plow share with a wingspan of up to 25 cm (no more pull) is replaced by a lister or chisel share.

Drawings of a manual hiller of this type are shown on the left in Fig. This is, in fact, a "semi-manual" unit: it is suitable for traction from an agro winch without alteration. In addition to attachments, there are manual disc hillers. They are also efficient at work, and inexpensive in terms of cost. Hand tools are durable and reliable, compact in size, easy to operate. The tool can be used both in small gardens and in the fields. If the device is equipped with a weight and a steering wheel, then control will be available to one operator. Standard manual construction is operated by two people, one pushing the implement and the other pulling.

How to do it yourself?

Any equipment is easier to manufacture if there is a corresponding drawing with specified dimensions. The tool making algorithm is required first:

  • draw drawings on paper;
  • make a template in full size, which will then be used to cut out steel parts;
  • bend the blanks of the disks along the level until the parallel lines of the radius are reached;
  • organize welding work, with an apparatus with the appropriate power for the metal used;

  • fasten the racks and turnbuckles with bolts;
  • weld structural elements;
  • adjust the position of the discs.

The required steel thickness for the discs is 2-3 mm. The distance between the elements can vary from 35 to 70 cm. The racks and brackets are made of ordinary water pipes with a diameter of up to 20 mm, and a steel thickness of about 2 mm.

Required materials and tools

As discs, it is allowed to use ordinary lids from kitchen utensils with a diameter of 40 to 60 cm. These parameters are selected experimentally and are associated with the power traction of the walk-behind tractor. Too heavy a device, the unit may simply not be pulled. The elements of the connectors will be replaced by a hollow pipe with a diameter of at least an inch, with a meter size.

Propeller type

Propeller hillers are used on those walk-behind tractors that are equipped with two forward gears.

When choosing potato hillers for a walk-behind tractor, a few more points should be taken into account. It is better to use equipment with a streamlined shape (a plow-shaped hiller is well suited), because they turn the soil out with less intensity, which does not allow it to lose moisture.

In addition, it is worth giving preference to steel tools with a sheet of greater width and with the presence of bearings. The dimensions of the tiller are related to the size of the walk-behind tractor and the length of the cultivated strip of land.

Take a metal layer two millimeters thick. Then cut out the halves of the part from it according to the proposed template (taking into account the dimensions). Important! Or they can be made directly from metal sheets (no more than 2 mm thick), then bend the edge of the lower edge.
