DIY step-by-step instructions for decoupage doors with a description

First you need to wipe the door with a damp cloth and then wipe it dry. Along the entire width and length of the door, you need to stick strips of adhesive tape so as not to stain the walls with paint.

We paint the wall with dark paint. After drying, apply a layer of paraffin using a candle.

We cover the entire surface of the door with white paint, it is better to use acrylic, because it dries faster and does not have a strong odor.

Then we take a decoupage card and cut out the necessary decor details. The card should be immersed in cold water for 5-10 minutes. After the drawing is wet, you can soak it with a napkin and spread it with glue. Glue the card to the dry door so that no bubbles or wrinkles form (you can smooth it with a brush).

When the card is completely glued and dried, you can fill in unnecessary areas of the drawing.

It is necessary to walk on the dried filler with sandpaper. As you can see, doing this kind of work with your own hands is not so difficult. You can decorate the door if you have all the items at hand. You can see an example of a successful door decor in the photo below.

Decoupage of an interior door will change an old and unsightly door beyond recognition. Such beauty can be done on your own, without the help of professionals.

We use photo wallpaper for subsequent work for beginners

You can stick photo wallpapers that are specially made for doors (as shown in the photo). Of course, this option will not be very cheap, but it will delight the eye with landscapes, exotic flowers, wild animals or children's drawings. You can also make a redesign of an interior door in a budget form with napkins or ordinary wallpaper. There are several nuances for decorating with photo wallpaper: the doors should be of a standard size, and the brightness of the wallpaper changes after a long time. At home, doors can be decorated with vinyl and paper wallpaper.

We decorate double-sided doors with fabric

When decoupage double-leaf doors, it is recommended to observe the pattern on the wallpaper. You can put plywood on glass doors and use it as a base for pasting. The remaining surfaces free from wallpaper can be covered with paint. It is better to keep the contrast of colors for a more effective result.

This technique of decoupage with a door cloth is very difficult, because often the glue leaves stains on the fabric. To prevent the edges of the fabric from crumbling, it is better to tuck them up. But all the work is not in vain, because it turns out very beautifully, original and simple!

An interesting solution can be obtained by sticking geographic maps, musical notes or your own posters.

But still the most popular are three-layer napkins, which are sold in any store and have bright and unusual patterns. To decorate the door with napkins, you do not need to have special skills and abilities. The element you are interested in is cut out with scissors, glued to the necessary piece of furniture, then varnished.

It's not difficult at all to create beautiful things on your own and completely free of charge, it's just worth putting in a little effort and imagination! And most importantly - you can make them yourself!

Video tutorial for beginners in needlework

This video will show you how to redesign a Shabby Chic door. Attention to the video tutorial:

After decorating the door, it will be possible in this room, in the same style as the door, to restore or.

In order to transform the interior, bring novelty to it in the cheapest way and at the same time enjoy the result, you can use the universal decoupage technique. Therefore, we will consider how to update interior doors with our own hands using such applications.

What is decoupage?

In simple words, this is a technique of cutting a pattern from special napkins and sticking it onto an object. It has existed for several centuries and is very popular today, since, in fact, it is very simple and affordable. The assortment of napkins with various patterns is so great that you can easily choose the option to your liking. When decorating interior doors, it is worth considering the overall interior design of a room or the entire apartment, if you plan to decorate all the doors.

Do not forget that they should not introduce an imbalance, but, on the contrary, it is beneficial to emphasize the overall style.

It is doubly pleasant when the work done pleases the eye and delivers aesthetic pleasure, especially in the absence of the opportunity to replace the old doors with new ones. After all, they are one of the most important components of design details. Decoupage of old doors will help to update the interior, give comfort to the space and emphasize the good taste of the owner of the house or apartment. You can decorate not only a wooden surface, but also plastic, veneer, eco-veneer and even glass.

List of materials that you may need:

  • decoupage cards;
  • acrylic primer;
  • acrylic paints;
  • craquelure varnish;
  • ordinary varnish;
  • Sander;
  • drill bits;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • a special tool for removing old coatings;
  • sandpaper of different fractions;
  • putty knife;
  • PVA glue or special glue;
  • brushes;
  • roller;
  • masking tape;
  • ruler;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • construction knife;
  • putty.

Preparing the door

First you need to cover the floors with oilcloth, as there will be a lot of dust and debris. Next, you need to get rid of old paint or varnish. If the paint is badly peeled off, then it is better to walk with a spatula and clean off everything that is peeled off. Then sand the surface with coarse sandpaper. It so happens that the varnish or paint has strongly eaten into the wood and it is not possible to remove them by sanding.

In this case, they will be able to help special products that are sold in any hardware store, or a hair dryer. There are a number of attachments for a drill or sander, but some difficulty with this method of removing the old coating is that the pressure must be even, otherwise the surface may become uneven. Plus, this method is inconvenient when processing is carried out in a residential area.

If the door leaf is not removed, then you have to do everything by weight, and there is more dust. In general, the choice is yours.

After removing the coating in any way, you need to walk over the surface with fine-grain sandpaper. Then clear the entire door from dust wiping with a rag. A brush is used in hard-to-reach places. If the door surface is paneled, then in the end it is better to walk with a vacuum cleaner without a nozzle. In this way, all the dust will be removed and you can proceed to the next stage.

Visually assess the condition of the door: if there are large or small cracks on the wooden sheet, it is necessary cover them with a special putty and let it dry well. Also sold in any hardware store. After drying, once again go over the areas covered with putty with fine sandpaper. Then everything is primed. This applies to wooden doors.

As a rule, there is no damage on veneer and eco-veneer canvases. Therefore, they can simply be wiped with a cloth to remove dust and dirt and primed using a roller.

Use a brush in hard-to-reach places. After preparation, you can start decorating.

Creative ideas

There are many design options, and it all depends on the imagination. You can pick up a rather large drawing that goes from bottom to top or vice versa. Most often, such drawings are independently printed on paper, and then transferred to the object. Or, with small applications, they are glued to predetermined places and create a specific composition. Decoupage cards are selected in accordance with the general background of the door. It is not necessary to paint the canvas with one color, sometimes the combined coloring looks more interesting.

It is worth thinking over the final result in advance, but if necessary, make adjustments in the process of work. The drawing should look harmonious and stand out effectively. Depending on the design style, these can be either monochrome pictures or sufficiently contrasting ones. In addition to floral ornaments, birds, animals, fairytale and cartoon characters, trees, and geometric shapes are popular.

If it is necessary to select a monochrome drawing in some places, then using drawing it is easy to do, for this you do not even need drawing skills.

Mark those areas that need to be selected, "by eye", and paint the desired color along the lines draw them. There is no need to try very hard not to go beyond the boundaries of the lines - there will be nothing terrible if some areas are not ideal, provided that the proportions are still maintained. As a result, the effect will be obtained, as if the whole drawing is drawn by hand, which will make the door expensive. After all, as you know, manual work is valued higher.

When everything is ready, once again take a close look at your creation: does everything suit you or you need to add something else. If you like everything, then the completion of the decoupage and door decor process will be the application of varnish. There are different types to choose from. Glossy, matte, semi-matte, craquelure. Apply with roller or brush.

Craquelure varnish is used to artificially age the surface and make it cracked.

Cracks can be made of various thicknesses and sizes. The stronger the thermal effect during drying, the thicker the cracks. In any case, they will not be the same, which gives the effect of naturalness. Read the instructions carefully before using - all the nuances are indicated there.

Other accessories can be used in the decor, if they are appropriate:

  • sequins;
  • beads;
  • rhinestones;
  • buttons;
  • braid and lace;
  • glass or ceramic mosaic;
  • toppers (words from plywood);
  • stucco molding;
  • moldings.

And much more, you can list it for a long time.

Decoupage doors with wallpaper

Surely everyone on the mezzanine has leftover pieces of wallpaper after renovation. They can also be used when decorating interior doors. Either as a background or as a substitute for decoupage cards, provided that the drawing matches the idea and style. In the same way, fix the cut pieces with PVA glue in the designated places. After that, so that the borders of the patterns are not visible, you can tint the necessary areas with the background paint with a sponge and, after drying, slightly smooth the surface with fine sandpaper.

There is also such an option when a picture from a decoupage card is glued directly onto the wallpaper, if they are the background. Of course, in this case, the wallpaper should be plain and light, otherwise the picture will be hard to see. When only wallpaper without decoupage cards is used, they are glued in the part of the door where there is a panel, or on the protruding parts, or the door is glued completely. You can also use wallpaper with a 3d pattern. Here, too, the choice is huge.

Decoupage technique can be used to update interior doors in different styles:

  • Art Nouveau;
  • provence;
  • vintage;
  • shabby chic;
  • country;
  • classic;
  • pop Art;
  • modern.

Turn on your imagination and get creative. A good mood will help you easily implement your plans, and the result will bring pleasure.

Do-it-yourself door decoupage master class, see below.

How sometimes you want to add something new to the familiar and already boring atmosphere of your own apartment. So that, on the one hand, it would be unusual, beautiful and sophisticated, and on the other hand, this change would not require large financial and physical costs.

It seems that it is not yet required to make a full-fledged repair, but it would be nice to update some interior details, for example, an old, plain interior door. Is it corny to repaint it in a different color? Then she will be knocked out of the whole ensemble. Do you want to make some decorated inserts in it? Too time consuming. But the decoupage of the door in this case is perfect. And you can do it pretty quickly and pick up such a pattern that you will not need to re-glue the wallpaper and change the suspended ceilings.

It should be noted right away that decoupage is not a repair, although it still carries protective properties for the door. Decoupage of doors is the application of cut-out drawings, patterns and appliqués on them, followed by varnishing, which makes the door surface more resistant to damage. But the main purpose of this not new technique for a long time is to make the selected surface more beautiful.

The flight of your imagination is not limited here at all. You can make a window out of the door to another world, build a flower bed on it, or amaze friends and acquaintances with an unusual landscape. The main rule is to observe the general interior of the room so that the door does not become a pretentious stain and does not cut the eye with its irrelevance.

Decoupage of doors with wallpaper

Do-it-yourself decoupage of doors can differ only in the materials used for this purpose. The rest of the technique and sequence of actions are very similar. We will start our master class with the simplest and most accessible method. Surely you still have wallpaper from the last repair. At least half a roll. This is enough to completely change one side of the door. First, the drawing will match. Secondly, you don't need to buy anything. Is that wallpaper glue, which can be successfully replaced with PVA.

  • The surface of the door needs to be cleaned up. Remove peeling paint, wash thoroughly with detergents and degrease.
  • Cut out the drawings you like from the wallpaper and compose a composition from them.
  • Paste these pictures on the door.
  • Can be varnished.

As you can see, there is nothing particularly complicated and cannot be. The main thing is that the patterns are not scattered chaotically, but make up some kind of symmetrical composition. Although chaos in contemporary art is highly welcomed.

This method is similar to the previous one, but somewhat more time consuming. This is due to the fact that ordinary colored napkins have a less dense structure. So:

  • The door surface should be thoroughly washed and dried this time too.
  • Cover the area around the work area so that the walls and floor are not stained with paint.
  • Prime.
  • Paint the door with white acrylic paint and dry.
  • Then paint it with a color that will successfully blend in with the pattern of the selected napkins.
  • Pictures cut from napkins are attached very neatly and smoothed with a brush from the center to the edges.
  • After the surface has dried out, the edges of the drawings must be treated with a putty and then walked with a fine sandpaper.
  • At the final and fixing stage, the entire surface is covered with a high-quality transparent varnish.

Here, as you can see, you have to tinker a little and be careful. However, the result will amaze not only your friends, but yourself too.

Decoupage glass on the door

I have to admit that the statement that decoupage of a door with wallpaper is the easiest thing was not true. It is much easier and faster to stick the pattern on the glass parts of the door if they fit. Firstly, in the store you can find a special double-sided film designed just for this purpose. But if you don’t want to spend on searches, or if you see a good interesting drawing, then there is no need to hesitate.

The main thing is that the drawing is on both sides. Just stick it gently on the glass part of the door and smooth it out so that no bubbles remain. The new decor is ready.

Decoupage old doors with cloth

Not a bad option for decoupage old doors using fabric. Moreover, it is possible to cover not the entire surface, but only some part of it, which will look both unusual and sophisticated. This does not suit every style, but if you decide to resort to this method, you need to proceed as follows:

  • Rinse well and dry the surface of the door or that part of it where you are going to glue the selected fabric.
  • Apply a fairly thick layer of glue.
  • Gently attach the fabric and smooth it thoroughly, making sure that no bubbles or wrinkles remain.
  • Apply two or three more layers of transparent glue on top.
  • The final stage is the same as in almost all of the above methods - the application of a special protective varnish.

Once again, it is worth mentioning the most important nuance, which is very relevant just to this type of blend of old interior doors. A new door, or that part of it that has been treated, should not be an inappropriate stain in the overall style of the interior. So when choosing fabrics, patterns and wallpaper that are also suitable for this technique, you should imagine in advance how it will look. And if the dissonance is too obvious, it is worth either abandoning this type of work, or looking for some other drawing.

Decoupage of doors with photo wallpaper

By the way, about the wallpaper. There are special options designed specifically for this purpose. I must admit that they are not cheap enough, but the financial costs will more than pay off with the sophistication and unusual appearance of the door, on which real works of art will suddenly appear. The choice is so great that you can get confused in the store. Perhaps you want to contemplate a piece of warm summer landscape in your room. Or a dynamic ride of graceful horses with beautifully flowing manes. Or maybe a mysterious lunar landscape. Or a collage of children's drawings. The choice is yours. But we must remember about three nuances of using photo wallpaper for decoupage doors or some other surfaces.

  • You can use photo wallpaper for decoupage doors only if you have standard size doors.
  • Before buying, you should decide which type of photo wallpaper will be easier for you to use. Paper or vinyl.
  • After some time, the brightness of the wallpaper may gradually decrease and you will have to change it. This is not a problem, but rather a new feature.

That is, perhaps, all that can be said on this topical and interesting issue. You will notice some nuances and successfully implement yourself. Some of them will be solved together with the experience gained. We tried to explain as clearly as possible what decoupage of old doors is, how to do it and what should be taken into account. We hope that we managed not only to tell you how easy it is, but also to push you to real creativity. After all, even an old, peeling surface can be turned, if not into a real work of art, then make it so that at one glance at it, joyful notes arise in the soul, and the mood rises.

After renovation, interior openings remain open or are closed with old doors due to the high cost of new ones, however, you can always update the panels by making do-it-yourself decoupage of the inner door with glass.

What is decoupage and what is the value of this type of decor?

This art of decorating various objects has existed for more than 5 centuries, and it began in Venice. The craftsmen of this city noted the high cost of Chinese household items, decorated with the finest inlay or carving, but since they did not know the technique, a skillful imitation was created. A drawing was applied to dishes or furniture, most often it was a thin fabric with some kind of pattern, and then the surface was covered with several layers of varnish. Sometimes their number reached 30 or more. Actually, in this technique you can decorate anything, including glass. Varnishing will give it a matte finish, but at the same time the drawing will acquire depth, and at the same time will not interfere with the penetration of light.

Decoupled chest

Decoupage became widespread due to the fact that the cost of such products was significantly lower than that of Chinese household items. That is why this technique of drawing with subsequent varnishing was at one time called the art of the poor (in Italian - arte povera). Over time, decoupage spread throughout the world, it is even known that even icons in Russia were made in this way. However, later the technique was forgotten, using less and less, and its peak of popularity arose quite recently. Given the variety of modern materials, the use of such a decor can be very versatile. It should be especially noted that this art is available to everyone, it does not require special training and any complex devices for doing it yourself.

Learning the basics of glass decorating

First of all, you should remember that you are making the decor for yourself, not for sale, and therefore it is not at all necessary to repeat the path of the Venetian masters and apply dozens of layers of varnish, you can do with one. Sometimes you need to cover the drawing itself with a special transparent decoupage glue, so that then from the back side, carefully remove a part of the paper base and get the thinnest film with the image. This is mainly required when working with printer prints on thick paper, which is difficult to apply on glass due to its opacity. By impregnating the top layer where the pattern is printed with glue or varnish, you will be able to gently soak the back side of the paper.

Glass plate after decoupage

It is noteworthy that, unlike opaque surfaces, decoupage of door glass can be either direct or reverse. The first option is standard - applying a napkin or other material with a pattern outward, and wooden and metal household items are decorated in the same way. Another thing is the reverse application of the image, when the finishing layer is located behind the glass, turned with its front side to it. In this case, the clarity of the pattern will remain even after the application of varnish, which will cover the back of the paper or other substrate applied to the door glass. However, this option cannot be applied to matte, translucent products.

There are several styles in which the decor is performed, these are Victorian, Provence, country, the so-called shabby chic, which has existed since the late 80s, simplicity (using a minimum number of elements) and ethno... Actually, all these styles correspond to those that are used for interiors in living quarters, because it is necessary that the decorated object fit into the environment. For the rest, as already mentioned, you will not need any special devices for work, everything that is needed to make decoupage on a glass door with your own hands is usually at home for everyone. The main thing is paper scissors with which you will cut out the images you like. Use a variety of brushes, a paper knife, emery, a sponge and a roller. And how to apply all this - we will tell you further.

How is decoupage glass done?

The simplest option is to use a special napkin or card, which is applied to the glass, like a decal. In this case, you only need to prepare the surface by degreasing it with a window cleaner and wiping it well with a clean paper towel. Then you should apply to the desired area a special glue for decoupage or any other suitable for glass, that is, one that remains transparent after drying. Now we overlay the image, in a direct or reverse way, which we talked about earlier, and then carefully align the thin paper layer with a roller, at the same time squeezing out the excess glue. With a cotton swab dipped in alcohol, we remove the glue that has come out, and if there are streaks, then we clean them off with a paper knife. And it remains to cover everything with acrylic varnish.

DIY decoupage on glass

It is somewhat more difficult to work with images cut from magazines or printed on a printer, since in this case the paper will be very thick. To avoid a pronounced transition from the surface to be decorated to the drawing, which is called a "ledge", you need to prepare a cut piece of paper. To do this, we cover the front surface of the sheet with acrylic varnish, wait for it to be absorbed and dry, cover it with a second layer and so on up to 5 times. Now we are patiently waiting for everything to completely harden, after the drawing will be firmly tacked with a transparent film, and you can soak the back layer of paper in warm water. Next, carefully clean it off with a thin skin or pumice stone, the pattern will remain on a thin varnish film, which we glue to the glass in the reverse way indicated above.

If the image is not too bright, it is recommended to create a background for it using, be sure to superimpose it in 2 layers after pasting the picture (but in no case before). The adhesive must dry so that the applied paper does not move during the acrylic coating process. In this case, decoration is performed only in the opposite way, so that the picture is pressed against the glass, and its back side, along with the other surface, is painted. Use spongy brushes, they will create a beautiful texture, in contrast to the fleecy ones, after which streaks often remain in the form of stripes. After coating with acrylic paint, after it dries, apply several layers of acrylic varnish.

To apply several images with your own hands in a certain order, on the opposite side of the glass, make markings with a washable felt-tip pen or glue a sheet of paper with risks with masking tape.

A few subtleties when decorating door glass with pictures

If you want to stick a picture from a fashionable glossy magazine, be sure to soak the page in warm water first, otherwise it will go in waves after smearing with glue. The same goes for prints on thick printer paper. By the way, it is much easier to get high-quality and bright images on the glass of the door, using often even denser large-format photo paper for an inkjet printer. Covering it with water-free varnish and thoroughly drying it, you can tear off most of the layers of the sheet in one motion, leaving only a thin front one with a pattern. If delamination is not observed, remove the fibers in spools, after soaking the sheet with a varnished front surface.

Materials and tools for decoupage

If you use special decoupage cards or napkins, it is not necessary to soak them beforehand, you can simply put them in a puddle of liquid glue, slightly immerse them in it and, taking them out with tweezers with rounded or soft tips, apply them to the glass. You can also do otherwise - lightly spray a napkin from a spray bottle, and then immediately apply it to the glass of the door, previously greased with glue. A slightly damp paper will smooth out well with a roller or brush and will not wrinkle afterwards after drying. And finally, one more trick from the masters: before decoupage the door with a napkin with your own hands, gently smooth it out, spray it with hairspray and then smooth it with an iron.

Attention - only water-based varnishes are warped and wrinkled on napkins and rice paper, so try to use undiluted formulations.

It is worth mentioning separately which adhesives are suitable for fixing the pattern on the glass. In addition to special ones, the already mentioned acrylic varnish (only undiluted), paste, nail varnish, ordinary glue stick, PVA, wallpaper glue (again undiluted with water) and even egg white will suit you. All of them will give a thin and, most importantly, transparent layer, which is especially important when doing do-it-yourself decoupage using the reverse technique. Of the materials, in addition to those listed, you can also use wallpaper, postcards and photographs; after having previously varnished them, you need to process them with a thin sandpaper on the back side, carefully removing one layer of paper after another. Floral felt is also suitable for application on a flat surface, but a large amount of glue must be used for it.

Now let's talk a little about giving the decor a touch of antiquity, which is suitable for Victorian and country styles, and especially for shabby chic. It is not difficult to artificially age the image itself; it is enough to immerse it for a short time in a decoction of onion peels, tea or in freshly brewed strong grain coffee. Another option: fill a wide and flat container with turpentine, stir in it a few drops of burnt sienna oil paint, and then immerse the drawing in the resulting solution for 2 seconds. It will turn out to be a kind of old parchment with engraving. And, finally, also a rather simple way - dissolve a little bitumen in white spirit to get a composition pale in color, which covers the already glued drawing. On the image applied in a direct way, you can walk a couple of times with a metal brush, vertically and horizontally, this will give the effect of cracking.
