The life span of modern support bearings of a screw pair has not yet reached a level when, during this time, intervention and replacement are not required. On average and honestly, the bearings run from 10,000 to 20,000 hours, depending on the quality of the bearings installed in the screw block at the factory and the regularity. Maintenance from the owner of the compressor. After operating this time, noise appears under load in the screw pair, increasing as the wear increases for another 5000-15000 thousand hours. As a result, the compressor starts to overheat and the screw block wedges due to the changed gaps in the screw pair. In case of serious overheating, the ends of the screw pair are "welded" to the body, which dramatically increases the labor costs for repairing the screw block. Or bearings fall apart, leaving behind unpredictable damage - from local overheating of the screw pair to scuffing and chipped screw shanks.

Repair of the screw block 250 kW

Twin screw block with direct drive through gearbox. The unit worked properly for 5 years, after which, on the increase, noise and vibration appeared during the operation of the screw block. The weight of 1100kg and the size of the unit inspire respect for anyone who stands next to this piece of engineering.

After agreeing on the scope of work with the customer, we carried out flaw detection of the screw block with complete disassembly:

An autopsy showed complete wear of the support bearings of both screw pairs, one part a little more, the other a little less, and small local seizures on one of the screw blocks. Apparently, the irresistible power of this unit sucked in and ate some very solid debris:

Bearing wear was approaching critical, which, in addition to debris, also affected the ends of the screw rotors:

Metal shavings were present in the crankcase and closed cavities, which indicated extreme wear of the bearings and impending overheating and seizure. If it were not for the accuracy and attentiveness of the compressor operating personnel, then a little more and the volume of repairs would have increased significantly:

After the results of the fault detection, we ordered new bearings for the screw pairs, made their replacement, as well as the replacement of the gearbox bearings. Collected all metal shavings, washed the crankcase, removed all the seizures on the rotors and covers. Both screw blocks were carefully assembled and as precisely and carefully adjusted as possible in order to avoid load distortions during operation.

Now for the next 4-5 years, the Customer has nothing to worry about, except for the timely replacement of oil and filters on this unit.

Repair of the screw block 75 kW

Helical block with gear drive. The trouble crept up from the side of the Siemens electric motor, which broke its bearings and, accordingly, the gear reducer, which led to jamming. The keys on the toothed gears were not cut and what should have happened happened - the small gear and the shank of the main rotor were split.
Material analysis of the screw pair showed that it is ordinary cast iron. Friction efficient but difficult to repair. It also explains why the steel key is not cut and makes the repair only more interesting.

Repair of the screw block Rotorcomp NK100 22kW

The Rotorcomp screw block from the Renner-Kompressoren compressor arrived at our repair base in a jammed state, having honestly worked its 5 years since 2007:

Despite the regular maintenance of the compressor, time took its toll, the wear of the support bearings reached critical tolerances, the oil did not help in cooling the screw pair, and the screw rotors rested against the working surface, being welded to it. This type of repair is always unpredictable in terms of the scope of work, and having received carte blanche from the Customer, we began to disassemble the screw block. The decision was made to disassemble slowly and gently in order to minimize damage when disconnecting the welded parts. After a stubborn struggle for safety, the screw pair surrendered with minimal losses for the Customer's wallet:

We restored the working surfaces of the screw ends and the plane of the cover using welding, turning and milling machines, as well as invaluable knowledge and experience of our mechanics. Replaced the support bearings of the screw pair. Assembled and set up the screw block. Returned to the Customer with comments to whom to contact and what to do, when after 4-5 years of hard operation of the compressor, the operating temperature of the oil will start to rise again.

Wear-resistant screw (screw) pairs of gerotor screw pumps.

Gerotor or single-screw pumps are positive displacement pumps, their principle of operation is based on the movement of the product by a rotating rotor along the internal spiral of a two-thread stationary stator. This does not create pressure surges, and the structure of the transported product is not subjected to mechanical stress. Foam concrete does not exfoliate. Screw pumps are used in many industries. The pumping working body of the pump is a screw gerotor or auger pair. The helical pair consists of a single-thread rotor rotating inside a fixed elastic double-thread stator (cage). The geometrical parameters of the screw pair, such as the length and diameter of the rotor and stator, the pitch of the helical surface, the number of steps, the axial eccentricity, etc. determine the volume of the resulting working cavity between the rotor and stator and the number of such cavities. The ability of the screw pair to develop a certain pressure of the product at the outlet, to pump a strictly defined amount of product in one revolution of the screw (rotor) and to pump solutions with a certain size of the solid fraction (2-16 mm) depends on the design characteristics. A vacuum is created at the inlet of the screw pair, therefore the pumps are self-priming. The screw pairs of the gerotor pump are capable of pumping various abrasive solutions, thick and gaseous liquids and are a consumable wear part pumping unit... When pumping abrasive plaster and concrete mortars the working surfaces of the rotor and stator are subjected to intense abrasive wear, therefore the rotor is made of wear-resistant hard alloy, and the stator is made of wear-resistant elastic material.

Ball screw- a kind of linear actuator that transforms rotary motion into translational motion, which has distinctive feature- extremely low friction.

The shaft (usually steel - made of high-carbon steel types) with a specific shape of treadmills on the surface acts as a high-precision drive screw interacting with the nut, but not directly, through sliding friction, as in conventional screw-nut gears, but through balls, through rolling friction ... This results in high overload characteristics of the ball screw and very high efficiency. The screw and nut are produced in pairs, fitted with very tight tolerances, and can be used in equipment where very high precision is required. The ball nut is usually slightly larger than the slide nut due to the recirculation channels of the balls located in it. However, this is practically the only moment in which the ball screw is inferior to the screw gears of sliding friction.

Scope of application of ball screws

Ball screws are often used in aircraft and rocketry to move steering surfaces, as well as in cars to propel steering rack from the electric steering motor. Ball screw history

This is usually solved by installing a corrugated protection on a pair, polymer, rubber or leather, which excludes the ingress of foreign particles into the working area. Another method is to use a compressor - supplying filtered air under pressure to a propeller installed openly. Ball screw drives, due to the use of rolling friction, can have a certain preload, which removes the gear backlash - a certain "gap" between rotational and translational movement that occurs when the direction of rotation is changed. Eliminating backlash is especially important in software-controlled systems, which is why preloaded ball screws are used especially often in CNC machines.

Disadvantages of ball screws

Depending on the angle of elevation of the treadmills, the ball screws can be subject to reverse transmission - low friction means that the nut does not lock, but transfers linear force into torque. Ball screws are usually undesirable to use on manual feeds. The high cost of ball screws is also a factor that often tilts the choice of machine builders in favor of more budgetary gears.

Advantages of Ball Screws

The low friction coefficient of the ball screws results in low dissipation and high transmission efficiency - much higher than any other analogue. The efficiency of the most common ball pairs can exceed 90% compared to the maximum 50% for metric and trapezoidal lead screws. Practically non-slip ball screws significantly increase the life of the ball screws, which reduces equipment downtime during parts repair, replacement and lubrication. All this, combined with some other advantages, such as higher achievable speed, reduced power requirements for the electric drive of the screw, can be a significant argument in favor of ball screws as opposed to its high cost.

Ball screw production

The most accurate ball screws can only be produced by grinding. Also, the screw can be obtained by knurling - such a screw will differ significantly in cost, but its accuracy will be limited by an error of the order of 50 microns per 300 mm of travel.

Ball screw precision

High precision screws usually give an error in the order of 1-3 microns per 300 mm of travel, and even more accurate. Blanks for such screws are obtained by rough machining, then the blanks are hardened and polished to condition. Three steps are strictly required as heat treatment greatly changes the surface of the ball screws.

Hard-whirling is a relatively new metalworking technology that minimizes heating of the workpiece during the process and can produce precision screws from a hardened workpiece. Ball screw tool screws typically achieve an accuracy of 250 nm per centimeter. They are manufactured by milling and grinding on ultra-precise equipment controlled by specialized submicron precision equipment. Lines for the production of lenses and mirrors are equipped with similar equipment. These screws are usually made from Invar or other Invar alloys to minimize the error introduced by thermal expansion of the screw.

Ball Recirculation Systems

The bearing balls circulate in the thread passages of the nut and the screw treads. If you do not direct the ball after the end of its travel, the balls would simply fall out of the nut after reaching the end of the track, therefore, in ball screws, several systems for returning balls to the beginning are more expensive - recirculation systems.

The external system uses a metal tube that connects the inlet and outlet of the nut channel. The outgoing balls fall into the tube, and, pushed by the subsequent ones, follow to the entrance. The internal system involves cutting a similar channel inside the nut, the balls coming out of the nut are guided by a special pad into the drilled channel, at the exit from the channel, a similar pad transfers the balls to the entrance of the treadmill. It is also very common when the balls circulate through several looped channels, where the return is provided by a special plug.
