Download a program for blocking ads. Best ad blockers for Chrome and Firefox browsers: review, comparison, tests

Blocking ads in browsers in last years has become a compulsory measure: some sites abuse advertising so much that it is annoying to visit them. So what are the best browser ad blockers in 2016?

What are browser ad blockers?

According to world statistics, the most popular are two browsers: Chrome and Firefox. Therefore, for our review, we selected the following ad blockers for these web browsers:

1. AdBlock for Chrome

The most famous ad blocker for Chrome. According to statistics, it has been downloaded by over 200 million users. A version of AdBlock was also released for Firefox, but for some unknown reason Firefox removed it from the extensions page. In AdBlock, you can enable acceptable ad variations for YouTube and Google search, but it is disabled by default.

2. AdBlock Plus for Chrome and Firefox

An equally well-known ad blocker, but its effectiveness is questionable, since it introduced "white lists" for advertisements... This extension is available for Opera, Safari and Internet Explorer web browsers. It also works in Android browsers.

3. AdBlock Pro for Chrome

The same as AdBlock Plus, but with a simplified interface and no whitelisting. The extension icon is located right in the address bar and, when clicked, offers only 3 options: disable, create a filter and enter settings.

4. Adguard for Chrome and Firefox

Adguard is simple to use and allows you to quickly add additional blocking scripts. The main product of Adguard is a shareware application that is installed on your OS and does not require the installation of add-ons or extensions in the browser.

5. AdRemover for Chrome

It is based on AdBlock scripts and is identical to it (except for regular obsessive requests for project support). The differences between ad blockers are mostly cosmetic.

6. Ghostery for Chrome and Firefox

Blocks analytics scripts, widgets, web beacons, privacy scripts and ads. Allows you to enable or disable scripts separately for each site. Also available for Opera, IE, Safari and mobile OS.

7. Simply Block Ads! for chrome

Another clone of Adblock. Has not been updated since late 2014 and it is possible that not all ads will be filtered. However, it is very easy to use and is the only browser extension that does not send usage statistics to developers.

8. SuperBlock AdBlocker for Chrome

Built on top of Adblock by the same developer who made AdRemover. Contains minor changes to the filter list.

9.μ Adblock for Firefox

A primitive blocker in which you don't need to dig into the settings. Allows you to separately enable or disable buttons social networks... Has not been updated for a long time.

10.µBlock Origin for Chrome and Firefox

  • AdBlock Edge for Firefox

The developer does not currently support the project.

  • AdvertBan for Firefox

Has not been updated since 2012 and is therefore ineffective.

  • AdBlock Lite for Chrome and Firefox

The project is no longer supported, so some ads are not blocked.

  • AdBlock Super for Chrome

Test for ad blockers

To avoid inaccuracies in the test, we selected 10 different sites (news agencies, gaming portals). On each of them, we turned on the ad blocker and refreshed the web page 10 times, and then calculated the average by the parameters. For Google Chrome, these are:

Page load time. The time it takes for the web page to fully load. Caching is disabled. This parameter can be viewed on the "Network" tab in the developer tools.

The amount of RAM used. Consumed by the extension RAM can be viewed in the Chrome Task Manager (opens by pressing Shift + Esc). We took the maximum value for 10 page loads.

Unfortunately, in Mozilla Firefox it is not possible to see the processor load and memory usage for each extension, so we only estimated the page load time. Also, for the purity of the experiment, we tested the page loading speed without blocking ads.

Tests were carried out on a laptop with a Core Duo 2.2GHz core, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7, and a Wi-Fi connection. All ad blockers are configured by default, except for Ghostery, in which we selected the "Block ads only" option during installation.

You can see the overall test result in front of you.

Results for Chrome:

  • Page load time. The result shows that the ad blocker cuts page load times by two-thirds. The page is rendered fastest with μBlock and slowest with Adblock Plus.
  • RAM usage. Ghostery proved to be the best with a maximum consumption of 37 MB of memory, and the worst of all - SuperBlock, which "ate" 113 MB.
  • Here μBlock performed well, but AdBlock Plus turned out to be the most resource-intensive.

Results for Firefox:

  • Page load time. Firefox is generally slower to load pages than Chrome. In terms of page load time, all ad blockers were on par, with the exception of µBlock Origin, which was just 0.4 seconds ahead of the rest.

Based on the test results, we have compiled a leaderboard - the best browser ad blockers in 2016, which includes Adguard, Ghostery and µBlock Origin:

Show me someone who enjoys advertising. I think everyone would like to block animated banners on sites, all kinds of text advertisements on site pages, and even remove ads in the mailbox web interface. In this short article I will tell you which ad blocker use for all common web browsers. Regardless of the browser you are using, you can find special add-ons (plugins) to combat ads. Their main advantage is the initially ready-to-use and constantly updated database of advertising links and banners that are subject to blocking, and any advertising content can be blocked manually.

Before proceeding with the description plugins to remove ads, I would like to mention one important thought, because any medal has a downside. Dear users of the Russian Internet, do not forget that the owners of a large part of non-commercial sites on the Internet (such as) today make money by displaying advertisements on their pages. The more popular the site, the more its administration receives funds from advertising and the more the temptation to place larger banners or give a large area for the placement of many small ones. Of course, you have the right block all ads on the site, however, it should be borne in mind that if this or that banner is not displayed on the page, the site you visited will not receive money going to pay for hosting services, technical support, the work of designers, programmers, authors, etc. And to offend webmasters with a penny (like me and thousands of others) who only contain a website on their own, generally blasphemy. That is why the developers anti-adware have provided in their products the ability to limit the ability to block ads. After all, there is nothing difficult to add useful sites to the exceptions of an ad blocking program.

Opera

For Opera browser ad blocking program is called Opera AdBlock. To configure it, you need to go to the menu "Extensions - Manage extensions - Settings". Here, on the "Subscriptions" tab, you can select a database of advertising links: international " Main list»And lists recommended for residents of certain countries, there is also Russian.

A similar solution for Firefox is called AdBlock Plus. Unlike Opera, Firefox needs to be restarted after installing plugins. After the add-on starts its work, you can change the filtering parameters through Add-ons - Extensions - Adblock plus- Settings. The first step in the menu "Filters - Add Subscription" is to enable the base of advertising links "RuAdlist + EasyList (Russian)". If desired, content can be blocked manually using the context menu item "AdBlock Plus: block image ...", after which they are added to the list "My blocking rules". To disable filtering within a single page or an entire site, you must first make the Firefox Add-ons panel visible (Settings - Add-ons Panel), because this is where the AdBlock Plus quick configuration button is displayed. The item "Open list of elements" shows the entire list of content on the page, blocked objects are highlighted in red.

Users of this browser will most of all like the AdBlock extension, as the best ad blocking... Search for it by name in the Chrome Web Store and install. You can get into the settings of the AdBlock plugin by clicking the red button that appears to the right of the address bar. On the General tab, you can enable unobtrusive text ads by checking the box next to “I like text ads in Google search results; show it to me. " On the "Filter Lists" tab, I recommend that you enable the subscriptions Custom filters AdBlock, EasyList and Additional Russian filters. The "Settings" tab contains white and black lists - sites that, in your opinion, do not need to be filtered from ads, and a list of web pages that, on the contrary, will be cleared of ads even when the global filter is turned off. Similar to other ad blockers, AdBlock allows block page content manually, when you right-click on an ad block and select the menu item "AdBlock - Block this ad".

Simple Adblock. This ad blocker for lnternet Explorer will have to be downloaded from the official website and installed manually, since a single database of browser add-ons from Microsoft is not provided. To configure the plug-in, you must enable the display of the status bar in the "View - Status bar" menu. A button for calling the Simple Adblock menu will appear on it, in which you need to go to the Settings item. In the window that appears, you need to select the country whose advertising filters will be focused on.

Blocking ads on mobile devices

The easiest way to get rid of it on an Android tablet or smartphone is to install the same AdBlock Plus. To do this, go to the developer site. You may need to resolve before doing this. operating system installing programs from sources other than Google Play, to do this, go to the settings of your device, open the "Security" section and check the "Unknown sources" checkbox. AdBlock Plus will run in the background and block ads in all browsers - both Chrome and alternative.

And you are not tired of advertising in browsers? If you are tired, then you have come exactly where you need to. Nowadays, advertising occupies a large market, and it is profitable for the companies themselves to develop search engines that there is a lot of it. More advertising means more money in your pocket. But advertising must be of high quality and today we will figure out what is needed for ad blocking in modern browsers like:

  • Google Chrome developed by Google;
  • Firefox developed by Mozilla;
  • Internet Explorer developed by Microsoft;
  • Safari developed by Apple;
  • Yandex Browser developed by Yandex;
  • Opera developed by Opera Software;

For these purposes, we will use a fairly well-known extension (plugin) for browsers Adblock or Adblock Plus, probably the best ad blocker .

Adblock (Adblock Plus)- this is so, I already said the extension () for browsers, which is necessary to block ads: pop-ups, advertising banners or annoying elements that interfere with the normal use of sites.

We will look at how to install and configure this extension for all of the above browsers. Therefore, I propose to highlight the main questions:

Let's move on to watching the video of the Adblock Plus installation:

Now we are sorting out all these questions in order. There is a lot of work, a lot of information, so read carefully.

Installing and configuring Adblock to block ads in Google Chrome.

First, open this browser, in the right upper corner click “ Setting up and managing Google Chrome", In the drop-down list, click on the item" Customization”.

Now you will be redirected to the page of the online store of extensions from Google. Here, in the search bar, write Adblock and click “ Enter”. In the list that appears, select our application and press the button “ Is free”. In the pop-up window, if we press “ Add”.

After the steps taken, the extension will be installed in your browser and you can see the application icon at the top right.

Right-click on the icon and select “ Settings”. On the “ General"Do not change anything, go to the tab" Filter Lists”And put a check mark“ Malware protection”, We leave the rest unchanged.

You can look at all the tabs and choose the settings that may suit you, but I gave an example of a standard setting that I use myself.

Now the extension works and when ads appear on the site pages, it will be blocked. The number of blocked ads can be seen near the icon, a square with a number.

Installing Adblock Plus is similar. Moving on to setting up the next browser.

Installing and configuring Adblock Plus to block ads in Mozilla Firefox.

All steps are almost identical to those we described for Google Chrome. First, open the Mozilla Firefox browser, find in the left corner the button “ Open the menu", Looking for the item" Supplements”And click on it.

Now on the page to which we were thrown in the search bar on the left, we enter “ Adblock plus”. In the list that appears, select the extension we need and press the button “ Install”.

After the browser installs the add-on, you will see an icon at the top left. Click on it and go to the item " Settings”And see that all the checkboxes were checked. If they are, then the whole supplement works perfectly to its fullest.

You can now work in Firefox without any problems. Adblock add-ons for this browser does not exist.

Installing and configuring Adblock to block ads in Opera.

And again we go to the browser, only now in Opera and will install the ad blocker Adblock.

To do this, click on the icon on the right and select “ Extensions”.

In the extension window, select the last item “ Add extensions”And we will be redirected to the page where we can download Adblock.

In the search box, enter the name of the extension and after finding it, click on it.

On the next page, click on the green button “ Add to Opera”.

After successful installation, an icon will appear in the left corner, right-click on it and select settings. See all settings as in Google Chrome. installing the Adblock add-on is similar.

Installing and configuring Adblock Plus to block ads in Internet Explorer.

Here we press the button “ Install for Internet Explorer”And follow all the recommendations. After everything has been successfully installed, the browser will ask you to install the icon on the toolbar, click “ Yes”. Now at the bottom right you can see the extension icon.

You can leave all settings by default, it will work fine.

Install and configure Adblock to block ads in Safari.

And as we have already done, we open the browser again, but now Safari from Apple and follow the link:

Click on the button “ Download”And download the add-on itself.

After downloading the add-on, install it. It's easy to install, click on the downloaded file and follow all the recommendations.

Now the extension is installed and you can see the icon at the top left. In order to configure it, click on it and select the "Parameters" item.

You will be redirected to the Adblock settings, the “ General"Leave unchanged, and on the" Filter Lists"Put the last check mark" EasyPrivacy (privacy)”.

Now everything is ready to block ads by 100%.

Moving on to the latest browser for today.

Installing and configuring Adblock to block ads in Yandex Browser.

The browser is pretty young, but still not very popular on the Runet, so I'll show you how to install this plugin for it.

and we repeat all steps as for installation on Google Chrome.

I don't want to do the same scribbling, so go to.

That's how easy we installed add-ons for all browsers, I mainly use Chrome and Firefox, but since I am doing site layout in parallel with blogging, I use all browsers for testing.

After you install Adblock and Adblock Plus for ad blocking in your browser, it will become more convenient for you to work and memory will not be wasted on downloading viral banners and advertisements.

Below is a list of the best free ad blockers. But none of them is perfect, so it is most efficient to use multiple solutions at once.

Types of advertising

When choosing the best ad blockers, we adhered to the following criteria:

  • Completely free;
  • Good user ratings;
  • No need to register account for use;
  • Recently updated (in the last 12 months);
  • Implementation as a plug-in for at least one browser or operating system;
  • Blocks "display ads" (pop-ups, banners, videos, static images, wallpapers, text ads);
  • Blocks ads in videos (for example, on YouTube).

To test blockers, we used several sites with different types of advertisements. These include Forbes.com, Fark.com, YouTube, and OrlandoSentinel.com.
On Orlando Sentinel, we found aggressive ad formats that most ad blockers can't block. In fact, only a few of them effectively blocked all ads shown on the Orlando Sentinel.

We've tested and rated each of these free tools against the specified criteria. In addition, the ad blockers listed below, with the exception of Stend Fair Adblocker, are software open source.

Best ad blockers - browser plugins and apps

The best ad blocking option is to install a specialized plugin or use a browser with a built-in ad blocker. They interact with websites much more accurately than stand-alone programs that run in the background on your computer.

Stands Fair AdBlocker
It is only available for the Google Chrome browser. With this plugin it is possible to block all types of ads. But it is only available as an add-on for the Google Chrome browser.
Stands Fair AdBlocker is not designed to block ad units, although it can be used for that as well. The development company believes in fair advertising and encourages users to whitelist ads displayed on sites.

Luckily, Stands does a great job at blocking all other ads. Including the aggressive ad formats shown on Orlando Sentinel. Plus display ads, autoplay videos, and YouTube ads.

Rating: 7/7

Main advantages: Block ads on Facebook and Google Search.

Works with: Google Chrome

Adbuard adblock
AdGuard AdBlock was able to block all types of ads. But the biggest drawback of this ad blocker is that all features are only available in the premium version. In this case, the difference between the versions of the blocker is explained only in the help documentation.

Many users rated AdBuard AdBlock positively. It has been downloaded over 4 million times and received high ratings.
When we tested, he turned out to be one of the ad blockers who not only effectively blocked ads displayed on the Orlando Sentinel website, but also did not skip ad frames with the word “advertisement”.

Rating: 7/7

Main advantages: Ability to transfer the whitelist to the blacklist.

Works with: Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Microsoft Edge, Yandex Browser.

Opera Browser
One of the fastest and most productive browsers. He was one of the first to offer his users a built-in ad blocker.

After enabling adblocker in settings, it blocks almost every ad you come across. But the browser was unable to block interstitial ads on Forbes (the quote blocks that appear in front of the articles). Most of the other ad units have been blocked.
In addition, the Opera adblocker successfully blocked advertisements displayed on Orlando Sentinel.

Rating: 7/7

Main advantages: built into popular browser, simple job with a whitelist.

Works: with Opera.

Adblock plus
It is the most popular ad blocking software with over 10 million downloads in the Google Chrome browser alone. It is a free and open source project. Adblock Plus is the basis for many other free ad blockers.

By default, Adblock Plus is designed to block only those advertisements that are deemed intrusive or potentially harmful. Therefore, it requires additional configuration.
If you want to block most of the ads (including automatic video playback), you need to disable the "Allow some non-intrusive ads" option in the settings. Even so, ABP does not block everything.

Adblock Plus was one of the tools that failed to do anything with the ads shown on the Orlando Sentinel. Unfortunately, even the "lock items" feature was unable to help. ABP is good and popular, but far from perfect.

Rating: 6.5 / 7

Main advantages: the presence of an anti-blocking filter.

Works with: Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, Yandex Browser, iOS, Android.

uBlock AdBlocker Plus
Unlike other tools, uBlock AdBlocker Plus is easy to use. However, there are some things the developer could do better. For example, a blocker site is just a page with the name of the plugin and no additional information.

Block AdBlocker Plus effectively blocks most of the ads, but still skips some of them. For example, it did not block the automatic playback of advertisements on one of the sites.

When some advertisements were loading, I used the element blocking feature to block specific ads on the web page. For example, on the Orlando Sentinel, element locking worked great. And its application did not lead to page reloads (as was the case with other ad blockers).

Rating: 6.5 / 7

Main advantages: easy to use, the ability to block elements.

Works with: Google Chrome.

uBlock Plus Adblocker
The biggest drawback of this plugin is that it has an awkward interface. There are several settings that are activated using switches. But most of the work involves digging into the parameters. However, uBlock Plus Adblocker effectively blocked all advertisements, including autoplay videos.

The main advantage of the plugin is the presence of a large library of third-party filters. The tool also includes advanced custom settings that allow you to create your own content filters.
During testing, uBlock Plus Adblocker blocked most of the advertisements. But I couldn't do anything with the banner ads shown on the Orlando Sentinel.

Rating: 6.5 / 7

Main advantages: filters elements and unsafe ads.

Works with: Google Chrome.

AdBlocker Genesis Plus
If you've used uBlock Origin or AdBlock Plus, this plugin will work for you. AdBlocker Genesis Plus is a fork of other popular plugins. It uses the same basic source code but implements many of its own functionality.

Its user interface is slightly different, but the ad blocking functionality is the same. The plugin developer claims to have deliberately removed the tracking code from the uBlock / AdBlock Plus source code to ensure more privacy.

This ad blocker has a high rating (4.34 out of 5) based on over 100,000 ratings. But I found that Genesis Plus does not block all advertisements. On one site, this plugin blocked simple display ads (Fark.com), but was unable to block a display ad on Orlando Sentinel.

Rating: 6/7

Main advantages: no tracking code, simple whitelist button, item blocking button.

Works with: Google Chrome.

Adblock Ultimate
Open source project. The tool allows you to fight most advertisements. In testing, it was able to block YouTube ads and most display ads on websites. This ad blocker has high ratings: 4.84 out of 5 from Google Chrome users and over 600,000 installations.

The plugin was unable to handle the ads shown on the Orlando Sentinel. He did not block ads broadcast on this site at all. But for those who only need to cut out most of the ads, this is a good option. Unfortunately the plugin hasn't been updated in over a year. Because of this, his grade was lowered.

Rating: 6/7

Main advantages: Fast "element blocking" function to instantly block any advertisements.

Works with: Google Chrome.

NoScript

This tool is only suitable for Firefox and to a greater extent is a script blocker, not an adblocker. NoScript prevents all types of scripts from loading on web pages: JavaScript, Java, Flash and others. You can allow loading of certain types of scripts. But by default, the tool applies a fairly “hard” filter.

As a result of its work, most display ads are blocked. Including aggressive ads on Orlando Sentinel, which other tools did not cope with. But NoScript doesn't block ads in videos at all.

Rating: 5.5 / 7

Main advantages: full script blocking.

Works with: Firefox.

Why are Privacy Badger and Ghostery missing from this list?

You may have heard of the popular adblockers Privacy Badger and Ghostery. The fact is that these plugins are not designed to block ads, but to opt out of ads and other site elements that violate user privacy. As a result, they both block certain types of advertisements. But first and foremost, the tools are aimed at protecting privacy.

This means that by using any of these plugins, you will not see the ads that you might be interested in. In addition, they provide limited control over what type of ad you want to block. And given their policy of "good advertising", you won't be able to block a certain part of the ads at all.

Google Chrome Ad Blocker

Despite the loud statements from Google developers, Chrome's built-in adblocker is not capable of much. During our testing, we found that it skips almost all advertisements.
At the same time, the control of the built-in blocker is very limited. Even finding a site that had advertisements blocked turned out to be a challenge. And since Chrome adblocker is designed to block certain types of advertisements, most of them are not intercepted.

Google's ad blocker looks like a fake. Perhaps its appearance forced some sites to remove particularly intrusive ads. But you will not be able to use this tool for full blocking.

A note on ad blocking and website revenue

Users hate ads for several reasons:

  • It can slow down page loading;
  • Many ads are intrusive and annoying;
  • Advertising is often not in the interests of users;
  • Ads may interrupt your viewing of content (particularly on video streaming sites such as Hulu or Crunchyroll);
  • Many advertisements contain a tracking code that sends information about user behavior to third parties.

The quality of displayed ads became so bad that even Google started using ad blocker in its Chrome browser. But Google's intentions. The company owns a large ad division and most likely Chrome does not block ads from Adsense.
The advertisements shown to us have various disadvantages... And they can be used to spread computer viruses by hackers.

Before installing any of the ad blockers, keep in mind that the sites you visit often rely on ad revenue to survive. Profit generated from broadcast advertising continues to be the main source of income for many Internet resources. In recent years, the use of ad blockers has resulted in websites losing $ 15.8 billion in revenue.
The "white list" is good way provide the sites you like with ad revenue. Even if you never click on ads, they all earn revenue early on from ad views.

This publication is a translation of the article " 10 best free ad blockers to remove ads and popups"Prepared by the friendly project team

Good bad

Are you looking for a way to permanently remove ads in your browser for free without registration and SMS :)? He is there. This is a simple and basic plugin called Adblock. More precisely, there is not even one, but two popular versions of this extension, as well as several ad blockers similar in functionality. There are versions for the Yandex browser, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Safari and others less popular. If these extensions do not help, most likely, your computer is already infected with a virus, and in order to eliminate it, you will have to sweat, but first things first.

Browser ad blockers

There are several types of ad blockers. The most popular and easiest to use are undoubtedly Adblock and Adblock Plus. Also, there are less common, but no less effective: uBlock, Adguard, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, Disconnect.

Installing Adblock

Control is carried out using a button in the control panel and LMB (Left Click with the Mouse) and RMB (Right Click with the Mouse) on it.

You can enable and disable certain types of advertising, include sites in the exclusion lists. All controls are easy and intuitive. You can turn off unwanted objects on the page.

The settings look like this

As you can see, the option to display unobtrusive ads is left by default. This means that ads that do not take up a lot of space and are labeled "ads" will not be blocked. Basically, you don't have to change the settings, and everything will work as it should, as they say, out of the box.

Site: https://adblockplus.org/ru

Description: A browser extension that completely blocks all annoying ads on websites, including Youtube and Facebook ads, sharing and like buttons, and spyware and malware.
On my own I will add that there is a localization of the site into Russian, in contrast to the same. For me, it's about something, yes it says.

Supported browsers:

  • Chrome (on the WebKit engine: Yandex Browser, Google Chrome and the like)
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Opera
  • Internet Explorer
  • Safari
  • Maxthon
  • Microsoft Edge

There is a mobile browser own production for Android and iOS - Adblock Browser.

Installation is also done in one click. As you can see, you can select your browser from the list

Control and configuration is also performed using LMB and RMB by the button that appears in the control panel (to the right of the URL entry field) after installing the extension.

And here's what the settings look like from the inside

As you can see, in general, the essence is similar to Adblock: unobtrusive advertising is allowed, there is a white list of domains (the list of allowed domains, for which Adblock Plus is disabled). There are personal filters, where you can set your own parameters of what exactly needs to be blocked on sites (in general, an option for advanced users).
A warning has been issued that the filter lists should not be too large, otherwise it can severely slow down the browser.

In general, these are two of the most popular ways to block inappropriate content on websites, and they are more than enough for almost all occasions. Use them and don't forget to include useful sites in the list of allowed domains.

Description: The original Adguard is a firewall with the ability to filter ads, prevent phishing at the network level, that is, incoming traffic is processed even before it reaches the browser. This is its advantage over Adblock and other browser extensions. It is possible to install the Mac version, as well as mobile Android and iOS.
Adguard firewall is paid, but the cost is far from prohibitive, in the region of a couple of hundred rubles per year. In return, you get a complete commercial product with 24/7 support, ready to use right out of the box.

If you don't want to pay, there are extensions Adguard Anti-Banner under Various types browsers.

Supported browsers

  • Google chrome
  • Yandex browser
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Opera
  • Palemoon

What can I say - Adguard in comparative tests with uBlock, Adblock, Adblock Plus showed itself far from the worst. And blocking ads in mobile, in my opinion, is a rather useful feature, which is provided at the proper level by far from all available free apps... And here, for a meager fee, a complete set with guaranteed service and support. In general, Adguard is an option for those who value their time and money.

Site: https://www.ublock.org/
Description: a relatively young, but very promising extension for blocking ads on the site. The main advantage of uBlock over Adguard, Adblock and Adblock Plus, its authors say, is a very low CPU load and memory consumption for the plugin to work. For clarity, comparison in memory consumption

As you can see, uBlock almost does not consume RAM, its level remains almost at the same level as in the absence of blockers

With the load on the processor, things are even more interesting.

Here you can clearly see that uBlock leaves its competitors far behind. In general, if you use Adblock or Adblock Plus, and because of them your browser slows down, I advise you to try uBlock, perhaps this is what you need

Supported browsers:

  • Chrome (Webkit: Google Chrome, Yandex Browser)
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Safari

Installation:

uBlock is very similar to Adblock and Adblock Plus - the same whitelist, a list of used filters, the ability to add your own. You can import and export settings, so you can easily transfer all your settings to another machine and do not lose them when reinstalling the operating system.

Control is performed using LMB and RMB by the button that appears in the browser control panel.

Customization: Third-party filters - check RUS: BitBlock List and RUS: RU AdList.

Then you need to update the filters (find the Update now button). The setup is complete.

Another point - some sites have scripts in their arsenal to detect and bypass Adblock and Adblock Plus. UBlock has an interesting Anti-Adblock Killer mechanism - it is a site detector with similar anti-blockers. Using this antiblock killer, uBlock finds such sites and forcibly cuts ads on them. So, here's another plus for using this interesting plugin. Try it.

Description: The main task of the extension is to find and suppress hidden spy scripts embedded in the code of site pages and suspicious objects. Also knows how to block aggressive ads

Supported browsers

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google chrome
  • Yandex browser
  • Opera
  • Safari
  • Internet Explorer

Site: https://www.eff.org/privacybadger

Description: essentially similar to Ghostery, the functionality and mission are generally the same as those of most similar blockers

Supported browsers

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google chrome
  • Yandex browser

Description: software that is no exception among its kind. It detects and suppresses surveillance, including from social networks, cuts ads, reports on the work done, and does it well. This becomes especially clear in light of the fact that the author of the extensions is former employee Google

Supported browsers

  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google chrome
  • Yandex browser
  • Opera

If Adblock Doesn't Help

If you already have an ad blocker, but you have not disappeared pop-ups with annoying VKontakte ads and other nonsense, I have bad news for you - most likely, you have picked up a virus or Trojan. But, do not despair, there is a solution to every problem.

Alternatively, you can start scanning your computer using 2 free utilities, from Kaspersky and Dr.Web:

And even if a regular antivirus did not help, you are likely to be helped by special utilities to combat Spyware, Mailware and similar evil spirits. One of these programs can be downloaded here - https://www.malwarebytes.org/products/.
After scanning the system, all suspicious objects are sent to quarantine. If useful files are sent there by mistake, you can restore them.

Also, where to look:

The above measures should be enough to fix the problem with pop-up ads.

How to use Adblock correctly

As you know, advertising is the engine of trade, and without a market we would be deprived of adequate prices for goods and services. Therefore, not all advertising is bad. In addition, advertising on the site is often the only source of profit, due to which the site lives and develops, and there are many of them on the Web. I understand that some webmasters, in the pursuit of profit, forget about the boundaries of reason, hanging the site with advertising like christmas tree garlands. Yes, there are doorwayers, and those who do not shun the spread of viruses and Trojans, and then the adblock will definitely help you. But there are also some good, useful sites with soft ads that you visit regularly and that grow and evolve from the ads they place on them. I’m not urging you to completely stop using Adblock, but be sure to add helpful resources to your ad blocker's exclusion list to thank the creators for their efforts to create quality content.
