Samsung is the official country manufacturer. Brands

It's time for some amazing amazing stories. This time I will tell you the history of Samsung Corporation, where it started, how and where it went and what it finally came to. To whom and what does it owe its formation and how it looks now.
It all began around 1932, when young Lee Byeong-chul, the son of fairly wealthy peasants and a Tokyo University graduate, opened his warehouse in the small town of Daegu, selling rice flour. Yes, yes, if you want to be largest manufacturer phones (like Nokia or Samsung) start a business that has nothing to do with it - make paper, sell flour, save kittens.

At that time, all of Korea was a colony of Japan, which in every possible way stifled the spirit of entrepreneurship, because of which the country was in fact a very large vegetable garden with a very poor population.
Cheap labor gave excellent prices for goods, and by 1938 our hero was the first to transport flour to China. Business went well and the man began to carry not only flour, but also rice, sugar, fish and other nonsense necessary for people to survive, taking it away from the poor Korean workers. It was then, in 1938, that the Samson Trading trademark was registered (and this is how the name Samsung is pronounced correctly)

Samsung means "three stars", which you can see on all early versions of the logo. There is a beautiful legend that the name was given in honor of his three sons, but the trouble is that in 38 he did not have them yet and he hardly even thought about it.

Things were going uphill and by the beginning of World War II Lee was fully armed: when American troops landed on the peninsula, his factories producing all kinds of hats were quickly converted into factories producing beer and vodka, which good-natured and wealthy Americans happily bought for even rather overpriced, creating Li Byeong capital.

In 1950, the Korean war began - North Korea against South Korea. The entrepreneur's warehouses and factories were burned or looted, and Lee himself was put on the execution list of northerners for aiding and bribery of the then (and first) president of South Korea. Chul, realizing that things are bad, is about to flee south.

There is another legend that gradually grows into two. One at a time, he collects all the money and hands it over to his driver, who he sends to the south, but the driver is caught in the middle of the way and taken prisoner. However (!) He manages to hide the money in one of the houses, which later (!) Burned down, but the chest with the money by a lucky chance (!) Survived and Li Byong later miraculously (!) Finds it.
According to the second legend, Chkhun accidentally (!) Finds someone else's burnt house and someone else's money in a chest, which he later lets into the rebirth of the business.
These are the Korean legends.

After the capture and execution of the first, evil president of South Korea, the second, good, comes to power, who begins a series of industrial and economic reforms. In particular, an attempt was made to replace the import of goods own production... To do this, the President asked the United States for thousands of money for development, in fact, brazenly tying it and spending on women and booze. Our hero did not get booze and heifers, but in addition to money, the United States also distributed orders for the production of all kinds of products, on which the newly recreated Samsung could make good money. It was during this period and for these orders that such companies as Daewoo, LG (formerly GoldStar) and Hyundai were created, which are rather big companies today.

By the end of the sixties, the founder of Samsung is becoming the most influential and largest entrepreneur in the country. Realizing that the story with the president and his factories may repeat itself, he begins to travel to Japan, establish contacts with the local mythioses merchants, and Sanyo becomes the first swallow, merging with which Samsung receives the Group prefix and a division of Samsung Electronics.

While the head of Samsung was traveling around Japan, there was a coup again in his homeland, and again an evil president was in power! Lee Byong, without wasting a moment, talks with the new president and convinces him that it is his company that is able to bring the country out of crisis, wars and bring happiness and joy in the future and throughout the planet. But to do this, he had to be made the main one in economics, and his company had to be given the best and largest orders. And the president agreed.

Here it is worth making a note about the personality of the protagonist. He was a sly, nosy man. Only his desire for profit and life saved his skin and literally begged for such privileges. You shouldn't think that he was a kind entrepreneur who loved his employees and won the respect of the president.

Samsung Group begins to actively engage in the production of paper (the government gave Samsung to the care of the only paper mill) and fertilizers (again, the only ones in the country), began to build and restore hospitals, hotels, universities, engage in insurance, and by the year 70 Samsung took up heavy production. The corporation, in fact, began to serve the country, continuing to increase Li's fortune.

In parallel with this, the company decides to enter a new market - electronics, starting to collect hair dryers and black and white TVs with the help of Sanyo. At some point, realizing that they can do all this without Sanyo, they say goodbye to the company, cutting down their own components for TV sets and hair dryers.

At the same time, democracy comes to the country (this time in reality) and the flow of money and government orders stops, many institutions, such as hospitals and schools go back to the state, Samsung has to tighten its belts. The entire board, which consisted of Lee's close and distant relatives, by his own order, was dismissed and in their place were hired European and Western experts who could not only preserve the current, but also increase (what was once found in the ashes , lol).

In 1983 the company starts manufacturing computers and components.
In 1987, the founder of the company, Lee Byeong-chul, dies in Seoul at the age of 77.
Production begins by 1991 mobile phones.

But most of all, Samsung, of course, "rose" on monitors and televisions, factories were erected as quickly as possible in many large countries in order to fully provide domestic markets. For example, all Samsung TVs and monitors sold in Russia are manufactured at the company's plant in the Kaluga region.

Now Samsung is not just a multi-billion dollar company, but also a leader in many industries, collecting not only well-known phones and electronics. In addition, Samsung does not hesitate to continue to engage in the chemical and heavy industries, build houses, cars, planes, ships, as well as issue loans and insurance. Samsung is an elegantly built corporation, with branches in various industries that not only generate revenue, but also help propel its core business forward.

For example, a construction department can build factories, a light industry department can sew clothes for workers in these factories, and a finance and credit department can insure life and issue a loan. The automobile concern produces cars for all kinds of managers, and the plant itself produces the same monitors and televisions.

The experience that the company gained by raising the country as it was intended was not forgotten, but on the contrary, it was applied with wisdom.

Sponsoring activities in art and literature

Samsung is a whole industrial concern. The giant was founded back in 1938.

1938 Korean entrepreneur Lee Byung-chol manages to register the Samsung Trading Company trademark. Initially, his company exported rice, sugar and dry fish from Korea to China and Manchuria.

Samsung's name is not Korean. Lee Byungchol named his venture this way because he had far-reaching plans. At the onset of the 50s, the ambitious Korean planned to develop partnerships with the countries of North America.

During World War II, when American troops landed in Europe, Samsung began supplying rice vodka and beer to the American military. However, the fierce Korean War that erupted in the 1950s stalled the company's growth. The alcohol business was shut down, and many factories were simply destroyed.

Revival

After the end of the Korean War, the new government began to implement large-scale economic reforms. In order to raise the country's economy, it was decided to provide the largest entrepreneurs with state orders. They were also provided with huge tax and legal incentives. It was during this period that such Korean giants as Daewoo, Hyundai, Goldstar (LG) were created.

Each company had its own specialization. Daewoo was engaged in the production of cars, Hyundai in construction, Samsung began to manufacture electronics, LG was engaged in the production of various electronics.

The company made another breakthrough when, in 1969, after merging with Sanyo, it began to produce the first black and white televisions. At that time, only 2% of Koreans had TVs at home.

The merger of the two companies became the basis for the creation of a large division - Samsung Electronics.

However, already in the 80s the company had to go through a major crisis. The economic downturn of the eighties nearly cost the company a collapse.

Samsung had to get rid of several non-core divisions, as well as reduce the number of subsidiaries.

Big changes

The next chapter in the history of the company began with the arrival of a new leader - Lee Hong Hee. He proposed a wide range of reforms, which involved a complete restructuring of the company and a change in all management fundamentals.

The company was also expecting a complete change in the field of marketing. The company strategy and logo were completely revised. It was then that the world saw the modern Samsung logo.

Today, to all students who are studying to be advertisers, they speak of Samsung's rebranding as one of the most successful in history. A stunning design and a large-scale advertising campaign around the world did their job. Now the Samsung logo is considered the most recognizable in the world.

In 1983, the company began manufacturing personal computers. In 1992 - 1993, the company's developers completed work on the first personal mobile devices.

According to marketing research conducted by international agencies, Samsung is in 21st place in terms of total brand value. The Samsung brand is valued at nearly $ 17 billion.

The Samsung Group has many business divisions that cover the microelectronics, chemical, construction and other industries.

The structure of the company consists in a complete (closed) production cycle of various electronics.

According to research, Samsung is the # 1 selling mobile phone in the United States. The company is a leader in the European mobile phone market and is ahead of its main competitor Swedish company Nokia.

Interesting information about the Samsung brand. Reference data on the Samsung trademark.

In the 1930s in Korea, entrepreneur Lee Byungchol started his own rice flour business. A small warehouse in Daegu city marks the beginning of a long history for Samsung. At this time, Korea was a colony of Japan, and it was quite difficult to engage in private business in the country. However, as early as 1938, Li managed to create the first independent export channel from Korea to China and Manchuria. The active development of the supply of food products such as rice, sugar and dried fish made it possible to officially register the Samsung Trading Company trademark. The foreign (for Korea) origin of the name was a consequence of the far-reaching, ambitious plans of the Korean entrepreneur: by the end of the 1950s, Lee Byung was going to establish trade with the countries of the American continent. And after the landing of US troops on the Korean Peninsula, the products of the plant for the production of rice vodka and beer began to be sold to representatives of the allied forces. The Korean War ended this business. Warehouses were ransacked and burned, just like the company's main factories.

There is a legend that on the ruins of a burnt house, Lee Byung found a hidden box with money, which he invested in his new business. It was a textile factory, a sugar factory, and later an insurance business. Lee Byung grew rich quickly, despite the fact that the average per capita income in Korea in the 1960s did not exceed $ 80. It is worth noting that at that time, even in the capital, Seoul, there was no permanent electricity, electricity was supplied for several hours a day, and there was no centralized water supply. Not surprisingly, an imminent military coup overthrew Lee Seung Man, president and close friend of Lee Byung, who, as a wealthy businessman, was a member of the disgraced ruler's inner circle. Lee Byung Chol himself was jailed for bribery and close acquaintance with the ousted president.

The new president of South Korea, General Park Chung Hee, began industrial and economic reforms. A program for the development of the industrial sector of the economy was developed, an increased focus on export was supported by close relations with the United States, it was supposed to take foreign loans, acquire raw materials and modern technologies, and re-use the resulting profit for the purchase of raw materials and equipment. Korean reformers concluded that a stable economy should rely on large concerns, but they had to be created in as soon as possible therefore, government credits and loans were provided to the most prominent businessmen in Korea. They were backed by government orders, while certain legal and tax breaks made it possible for small businesses to grow into large conglomerates. Lee Byungchol was one of the successful entrepreneurs.

Thus, 30 large companies were created (chaebols - "money families"). Among them, in addition to Samsung, were Daewoo, Hyundai, Goldstar (LG), etc. Each "money family" had its own direction: Daewoo - car production, Goldstar - household appliances, Samsung - electronics, Hyundai - construction, etc. etc.

South Korea's economy has grown at a rapid pace of 6 to 14% per year. The increase in exports during this period was 30%. So in 1969, when Samsung, after merging with Sanyo, began producing black and white televisions, in Korea itself, only 2% of the population had them.

The merger of Sanyo and Samsung marked the beginning of one of the largest sectors of the Samsung Group - Samsung Electronics. The company managed, albeit with heavy losses, to weather the economic crisis of the 1980s. The price of the crisis is a few non-core divisions, a sharp reduction in the number of subsidiaries. With the coming to the board of Lee Honghee, a whole range of reforms was proposed, which involved not only a complete restructuring of the company, but also a change in the very foundations of management: the company had to fully comply with the conditions of the free trade law. The proposals to change the policy towards external investors were supposed to make the company more attractive for subsidies, as the conglomerate lost financial support from the state.

Until the 1980s, the shares of the companies included in the concern were circulating only in South Korea, while they used enough low demand from the side of investors. The reason is traditionally Asian governance based on the principles of Confucianism: only representatives of the Li family were at the head of the government. External investors had no levers to influence decision-making in the management of companies. In addition, traditional management meant life-long employment and career advancement over the years of service.

Marketing changes were introduced, a complete redesign of the company's mission and a change in its symbol. The first two logos of the company featured three red stars. But Samsung's management, considering the former logo inappropriate to the image of an international corporation, decided to replace it. It was then that the modern emblem saw the light - a dynamically inclined blue ellipse with the name of the company written inside. Great design and a large-scale advertising campaign did their job: the logo became one of the most recognizable in the world. Advertising students from leading universities are examining Samsung's logo change as an example of an extremely successful rebranding today.

When developing a new emblem, oriental philosophy was not without. According to the company's representatives, "the elliptical shape of the logo symbolizes movement in the world space, expressing the idea of renewal and improvement." These changes continued until the 1990s.

In 1983, the production of personal computers was opened.

In 1991-1992, the development of the first production of personal mobile devices and mobile telephony was completed.

Finally, the 1999 Forbes Global Manufacturing Awards consumer electronics was awarded to Samsung Electronics.

One of the most important directions is the creation of LCD panels (monitors) and TV, as evidenced by the ubiquity of production. Plants for the manufacture of monitors Samsung Electronics are located in South Korea (Suwon) (1981), Hungary (1990), Malaysia (1995), Great Britain (1995), Mexico (1998), China (1998), Brazil (1998), Slovakia ( 2002), India (2001), Vietnam (2001), Thailand (2001), Spain (2001).

In 2008, a TV set production plant was opened in Russia (Kaluga region), the enterprise is engaged in the assembly of LCD and plasma TVs. The plant has a workshop for the production of plastic parts of the product body, but the line is not fully loaded and the main part of the devices is assembled from imported parts (mainly made in China) (November 2008).

The main production in the suburbs of Seoul has become loaded with the production of displays of the highest quality (of all produced by the concern), and the 6 sigma control system has been introduced at this enterprise. Here they develop new models, test them, create the first series of products, and after a successful implementation, they distribute the load on the manufacture of a new product between factories around the world. This standard has been introduced at most of the plants of the concern, for example, it is the corporate strategy for the work of the Samsung SDI division.

On March 1, 1938, in the South Korean town of Daegu, a local rice trader Byong Chul Lee founded a new firm with his Chinese partners to expand his then business. The starting capital at that time was $ 2,000. It is from this moment that Samsung history, which translates to "Three Stars" and is pronounced "Samson" in South Korean.

Initially, Li's organization exported rice, sugar, noodles and dried fish to China and Manchuria. Already in 1939, the company acquired a brewery, after which wine and rice vodka were added to the range.

Thanks to Biong Chul Lee's commercial flair, intuition and management talent, things were going very well; the staff and sales volumes increased. Even the Second World War failed to provide significant negative impact on his business. After graduation, sewing machines, steel and fertilizers were added to the product catalog. And in 1948, Lee and his partners decided to be referred to as the then fashionable name in the American manner of Samsung Trading Co.

Korean War and the years after it

Period 1950-1953 became a very severe test for the company. Its main production lines and warehouses were destroyed, and the business itself was virtually destroyed. But the fact that its creator went down in history was that he did not give up and managed to achieve the impossible: Samsung literally rose from the ashes. It was important to find the strength to continue activities, and here it was not without the support of the South Korean government, which made a bet for the restoration of the post-war economy on large concerns (chaebols). Effective measures in the form of benefits, loans and government orders have done their job: Samsung Trading Co has become one of the leading corporations in the country.

In the 60s and 70s, Lee's business expanded significantly: a powerful fertilizer factory was built, participation in the South Korean insurance system was developed, and a newspaper was founded; also begins the construction of hospitals, hotels, universities and even ships. And all this is under the well-known trade mark.

Interesting fact: The construction of the Burj Khalifa Tower in the UAE (the tallest building in the world), the Twin Towers in Malaysia and a number of other unique objects, including the large-tonnage ship of the same name - all this is the merit of Samsung Corporation.

Start of production of household appliances

In 1969, the first English-language logo of the Korean monster of the world economy was created. At the same time, a division for the production of black and white TVs was opened in conjunction with Sanyo. In 1973, this partner enterprise became fully controlled by Samsung Trading Co and later, after the transformation, became known as Samsung Electronics Corporation.

In subsequent years, their product line was replenished with the following types of goods:

  • 1974 - refrigerators and washing machines;
  • 1977 - color televisions;
  • 1979 - VCRs, cameras and microwave ovens;
  • 1983 - personal computers;
  • 1991 - cell phones;
  • 1999 - smartphones.

The corporation managed to become the first in Korea, occupying a total share of its products with a fifth of the country's total exports. In 1978, a representative office of the company was opened in America. This is how the path to conquering world leadership began.

Interesting fact: More than 70% of the group's sales are in electronics. Today, the leading division of the corporation, Samsung Electronics, is the world leader in the production of household appliances and electronics. And the shipbuilding division of Samsung Heavy Industry is ranked second in the world.

1986 saw the Korean Management Association win the Best Company of the Year award and the 10 millionth color TV. At the same time, sales offices of the company were opened in Canada and Australia, in addition to this, research laboratories began to work in California and Tokyo.

Interesting fact: According to British research companies, back in the summer of 2005, the total value of the Samsung brand exceeded that of Sony for the first time.

The history of the mobile line from the company

Smartphones from this corporation cannot boast great price and the status of the "premium" segment of the telephone market. This place is honorable and has long been occupied by the nearly bankrupt Vertu company. We wrote material about her

In 1994, the total

the corporation's sales exceeded $ 5 billion, and in 1995, the export turnover already exceeded $ 5 billion.

In 1997, Samsung launched a CDMA mobile phone weighing just 137 grams - the lightest in the world.

Since 1998, the corporation has been the world's leading manufacturer of LCD monitors. At the same time, the mass production of digital TVs was started. And just a year later, in 1999, Samsung was awarded the honorary title of "Best Household Appliance Company" by Forbes Global magazine.

Interesting fact: In Russia, the first Samsung production was opened in Kaluga in 2008. An area of 47.3 hectares was allocated for the industrial complex. The total investment amounted to 3.5 billion rubles.

After the death of the founder of the corporation in 1987, it was headed by his son Lee Kun Hee.

He revised the then concept of large-scale production of budget quality products, focusing not on their cheapness and mass production, but on high-quality innovative products that outstripped market trends. This decision turned out to be very successful and subsequently significantly increased the brand's image in the world. As a result, having made a choice between quantity and quality in favor of the second, the corporation only won, and now it can boast of both.

Interesting fact: Due to the worldwide fame and popularity of the brand, the city of Suwon, in which the corporation's headquarters has been located since 1973, is called Samsung-City by the common people.
