Robbers thieves freaks dog of the wrong breed. The Tale of the Clever Mouse - Samuil Marshak

Characters and decorations
In my "bins" lay a box from under a laptop, very similar to a suitcase with a handle. It was she who served as the "starting point" for creating the scenery.

It is clear that Marshak does not at all sympathize with the heroine, whose life has been subdued by things, a lot of things. Even her own live dog is nothing more than a "piece of baggage" for her. I decided to emphasize this point: having drawn the characters of the poem and the objects mentioned in it, I pasted their images on rectangular boxes and boxes, to which I glued handles and drew riveted "corners", as on old suitcases. It turned out a kind of "images-suitcases", "luggage places" ... And only dogs (the most self-willed characters!) Were represented by purchased naturalistic figures.

And the box with which it all began and which was supposed to become a container for storing characters and scenery for the performance has turned into a luggage car.

The "highlights" of the performance were a real bronze bell, which is so great to give a signal for the departure of a train, and a locomotive traveling along miniature tracks, with the corresponding "railway" sounds and signals.

Action
So...

The lady checked in the luggage:
Sofa,
Suitcase,
Sacvoyage,
Picture, basket, cardboard
And a little dog ...

A lady appears on the platform - the mistress of the luggage, and the things listed in the verses: an old-fashioned sofa, a heavy suitcase with metal corners, a leather bag tied with belts, a wicker travel basket, a hat box (we have already seen all these antiques in the local history museum). Finally, a little puppy enters the stage. He is solemnly hoisted on a mountain of things.

The lady is given “four green receipts”.

Things are being taken to the platform.
Thrown into an open car ...

Things are moved, without losing the previous order, by spectators-"loaders" into the darkness of the carriage (for the "carriage"). The puppy, barking mischievously, runs away in an unknown direction. Some of the children give the signal to start and ring the bell (we met the sound of a real station bell in the railway museum in the city of Baranovichi, during our trip to Belarus). This is where our second "highlight" appears - a toy train.

Train departs! He cheerfully runs in a circle, making all the sounds that his real brother would make: the sound of wheels, shrill beeps ... And the audience is fascinated by his movement and, swaying from side to side, ecstatically repeat "chug-chug-chukh" ...

But now the train arrives at the Bottom station, as we are informed by a hanging sign. Porters "look" into the bowels of the carriage ... and in fright count the luggage: "Sofa, suitcase, travel bag ..."

Then a "huge disheveled dog" enters the scene, which is placed in the place of the escaped pug.

The bell sounds again, and the toy train is running along the rails again. And the funny poetic lines rhythmically "tap" like wheels at the joints of rails ...

So, finally, we “arrived in the city of Zhitomir”, where “porter number fifteen” was already hurrying towards us. He

Carries luggage on a trolley:
Sofa,
Suitcase,
Sacvoyage,
Picture,
Basket,
Cardboard,
And they lead a little dog behind.

Growling dogs are portrayed in chorus, and the whole world "helps" to turn the long-suffering baggage upside down.

As a result, a huge dog is hoisted on the pyramid of things, as a kind of monument to human "materialism" and slovenliness of railway workers.

The poem "Baggage" is built on the constant repetition of perfectly chosen words, and those asking for the tongue, so the text is remembered instantly. Already at the second performance, the audience themselves chanted by heart:

Sofa,
Suitcase,
Sacvoyage,
Painting,
Basket,

Analysis of the poem "The lady checked in a sofa, suitcase, bag ..." Marshak

Written almost a century ago, the poem "Baggage" by S. Ya. Marshak is still read with pleasure by both adults and children. Rarely are there people who are not able to recite a work by heart - bright images, lively but laconic narration is easily etched into memory.

In his desire to achieve the ideal rhythm, the author did not shy away from changing the plot of the work - before the lady went to Tver, and not at all to Zhitomir:

“We arrived in the city of Zhitomir.
Porter number fifteen ... ", and
“As soon as we arrived in Tver,
They opened the tailgate ... ".

According to the recollections of Samuil Yakovlevich, he started work without having a specific idea, he was only worried about the rhythm, playing with the word. And the rhythmic organization of the verse is such that the first lines include from 3 to 6 words, followed by one-word lines. Each time the stanza ends with a phrase about a dog.

Successfully chosen stylistic figure, and became the key to the success of the work - children easily learn a musical phrase, and chased words-ladders are used in games as a counting rhyme. This was the purpose of the pattering repetition of traveling objects connected in one chain by rhyme and a repetitive refrain.

As for the imagery, a picture easily appears in the child's imagination - a fragile lady puts a huge sofa in her luggage. What about the rest? - just think! - a suitcase, a travel bag, a picture, a basket, a cardboard box (full of fluffy hats, by the way) and some tiny terrier.

The situation is undoubtedly amusing. In the final lines there is a climactic clash between an orphaned lady and railroad workers, and the image of a shaggy mongrel replacing a small dog became a hilarious denouement of the story (“However, the dog could grow up during the journey!”). The author noted that these lines were born by themselves.

Adult readers will also smile at sarcastic allusions to bureaucratic formalities ("They gave the lady at the station four green receipts"), a disdainful attitude towards other people's things ("Things are being taken to the platform, thrown into an open carriage"), or to see the irony in the name of the station - "Bottom ".

The cheerful verse was negatively received by Soviet critics. But having survived the time, he continues to delight readers today.

Marshak's poem "Baggage" I seem to have taught in primary school... Or did you not? And how, then, do I remember these magical lines: "the lady checked in a sofa, a suitcase, a bag ..."? It seems, over the unlucky aunt, who checked in a little dog, and received in return huge dog, then the whole class laughed ... Although, now, having matured, I think: - what's so funny?

Do you remember where you yourself first heard Marshak's verse "Baggage"? I have no doubts what we have heard. 🙂 Read this funny story about a lady and her luggage with your kids today.

Analysis of Marshak's poem "Baggage"

The poem "Baggage" is an excellent example of Marshak's sparkling humor and imagery. It reads great at any age and remains very modern, despite the fact that it was created almost a hundred years ago.

The work was written in 1926. Samuil Yakovlevich changed his plot in the course of the composition, since he was primarily interested in the rhythm of the poem. For example, the heroine was originally going to Tver, but later it was decided to make Zhitomir the final destination of the trip. It seems that these moments were not so important, because the main thing that makes the poem unique is a play on words and vivid images.

The lines of the poem are organized as follows: the first two to four lines contain three to five to six words. They are long lines followed by several lines one word at a time. The stanza ends with an invariable phrase about a dog. Thanks to these lines, which are a special technique - an epiphora, "Baggage" has become one of the most famous and cited children's poems:
Sofa,
Suitcase,
Sacvoyage,
Painting,
Basket,
Cardboard
And a little dog.

This is not surprising, because the author deliberately tried to select words and put them in consonant ladders, so that it would be easier for children to perceive and remember them. Undoubtedly, he succeeded, because the poem really quickly went into the people and was repeated by the children like a counting rhyme.

This poem also owes its popularity among readers of all ages to the fact that its characters are very colorfully and vividly depicted in it, and the action is dynamic, despite the laconicism of the narrative. For example, it's easy to imagine the heroine from the first lines. The author calls her "lady", "lady". Coupled with a huge baggage, which includes a foreign "bag", a cardboard box in which fluffy hats are usually transported, and a small "noble" dog breed, she gives the impression of a puffy woman claiming a high status. However, the situation surrounding her makes the image very comical. Also, it is not difficult for children to imagine the behavior of a lady, a dog and the beast that was found to replace her, to imagine stations, a railway station and nimble porters. Therefore, the poem is easy to read and listen to even by the smallest children.

But adults can also find something funny in the work. For example, to discern the subtle irony of the existing order in the country at the time of the creation of the poem. The author ridicules the bureaucracy (“They gave the lady at the station four green receipts”), the negligence of the workers (“Things are being taken to the platform, thrown into an open car”), the pretentious behavior of passengers. Even the name of the Bottom station contains a hint. It is known that for such a caricatured depiction of reality, Marshak was criticized by the Soviet regime. However, the work has stood the test of time, and today readers can get a charge of humor by rereading "Baggage".
