How to plant a fir tree in a pot. The benefits of spruce needles

Spruce is a coniferous plant that acts as a classic decoration of the territory. The blue spruce is one of the endangered species, therefore it is listed in the Red Book. This factor affects the cost of pine needles seedlings. But why spend money on buying young trees if you can grow them yourself? We will try to understand together how to grow a spruce from seeds, because in addition to saving finances, the gardener gets a healthy, adapted to environment plant.

Owners of country estates massively purchase cuttings of blue spruce for further cultivation, even despite the high cost. This is because not everyone has an idea of how to grow a spruce from seeds, but you will know for sure.

Features of blue needles

The main difference between conifers of this species is the color of the needles. When growing spruce at home from seeds, it is possible to obtain a tree with 30% of thorns colored in noble blue, the rest acquire a classic green hue. Therefore, many are interested in the question: "How to grow a spruce from seeds at home and get a high-quality seedling?"

How to get a quality seedling when grown at home?

There are three ways to reproduce spruce trees:

  • vaccination;
  • by cuttings;
  • growing from seeds.

Cutting method: features

This is the easiest way to grow a new coniferous tree. rooted in the greenhouse, because open ground has a negative effect on still immature conifers. So, the spruce planting begins with the selection of cuttings. Best fit winter cuttings that give results up to 4 times faster. The most favorable period for rooting is considered the moment of swelling of the kidneys. The main thing when breeding spruce is not to forget about maintaining temperature regime and the required moisture level.

Blue spruce, grown in this way, reaches 1 meter in height after 5 years. At this point, the tree can be replanted to a permanent place of growth.

Growing needles from seeds

How to grow spruce from seeds? This process is painstaking and lengthy, and the result depends on the selection of the material and how high-quality it was.

Seed collection

To grow any plant with your own hands, you need a selective planting material, which is better not to buy, but to get it yourself. For growing spruce seedlings, seeds obtained from the fruits of a coniferous plant - cones are used. The collection of cones is carried out in mid-February. This is the perfect time to harvest complete spruce seeds. The bumps are placed in a tissue bag and placed next to heating device or a fireplace, which facilitates quick opening and free access to the grains. After a few weeks, you should be able to remove the seeds without damaging them. After the cones open, the spruce seeds in the bag are rubbed together to cleanse the lionfish. Rinsing under running water will get rid of the greasy film formed due to the release of essential oils. At the final stage of preparation, the planting material is well dried.

To ensure complete protection of the seeds from bacteria, they are washed with a weak one and then wiped with a cloth. The prepared seeds are placed in a glass jar, which, tightly closed, is placed in the refrigerator. Conditions in freezer resemble natural ones as much as possible (in the cold season), where the seeds are kept until mid-March.

How to grow a spruce from seeds yourself? It is very important to get good planting material, which, however, can be bought on the market if necessary. The main thing is to know a good manufacturer.

Preparing the soil

To blue spruce from seeds at home it grew healthy, it is recommended to prepare the site before sowing the specimens.

Important! Do not plant blue spruce seeds in the area where you are growing vegetable crops- in the beds, they do not take root and quickly die.

The optimal growing environment is soil from under lawn grass mixed with soil taken from under a coniferous tree. Growing in greenhouses involves two planting techniques:

  • directly into the ground;
  • into an additional container.

When planting seeds in pots, do not forget to prepare a peat mixture with the addition of limestone flour and ammophos in a ratio of 6: 0.035: 0.020 kg. The mixture is scattered into containers in which the spruce is planted. The pots themselves are buried deep into the earthen embankment in the greenhouse.

Important! Choosing the first method of planting, an additional top layer is poured over the soil layer - from sawdust and peat.

We plant seeds

First, determine the most favorable date for planting the spruce. The seedling will feel comfortable in nature if the ambient temperature is around +19 o C (+ -1-2 o C).

Important! After changing the temperature regime (i.e. after the refrigerator), they can only be stored for 50 hours.

Before the material is treated with a solution of foundation: 20 g per 10 liters of water.

Spruce is planted in well-moistened soil. If the spruce is grown in greenhouse conditions, then the containers are deepened into the ground by 1.5 cm, and a film is pulled from above. If on open ground, first they tamp the earth in the hole, after which they put the seeds, covering them on top with a peat mixture and a thin layer of sawdust (about 1 cm).

Important! The distance between individual seeds should be at least 3.5-6 cm.

Seed germination

The first shoots can be observed in 10-14 days. If placed close to each other, there is a need to thin them out. Of the entire range of plants, only the strongest specimens are left, keeping the distance between them up to 7.5 cm.

When immature seedlings enter the active growth phase, it is necessary to maintain optimal conditions growing needles, which are as follows:

  • cancel watering and put into practice light spraying of seedlings with water - 2 times a day;
  • maintain the temperature regime: the minimum temperature is +13 o C, the maximum temperature is +15 o C.

Important! Remember that night frosts and direct sunlight during the day have a detrimental effect on immature young needles.

A month later, the seedling of a young blue spruce reaches a height of 3-4 cm. Experts note that indirect diffused sunlight has a good effect on the growth rates of specimens. Since small needles are not resistant to diseases affecting plants, namely to root rot, there is a need for special protection: first, fungicide will be required, then treatment with an insecticide solution.

Plant transplant

You already know how to grow spruce seedlings from seeds, but it is impossible to do it qualitatively without transplanting annual plants... The procedure is carried out in early spring... After the seedlings reach the required level, it is important to plant the specimens you have bred so as not to lose the plants.

Before transplanting, pits are prepared, which are tamped and sprinkled with a layer of earthen mixture from under a coniferous plant.

How to carry out a transplant correctly?

Small Christmas trees are dug out of the ground, separating the interwoven roots of individual specimens. It is necessary to carry out this work quickly, but carefully so as not to damage root system and keep it dry.

Blue spruce, grown from seeds at home, requires special care. These are often standard rules.

Interesting! By the third year of growth, less than half of the seedlings survive.

Three years after the sowing of the seeds, the plants are re-transplanted. This is done to provide sufficient space for the roots of the spruce. During this period, the Christmas trees are planted at a distance of 1 m from each other.

Are you wondering how much spruce grows from seed? And we have an answer to this question. After 5 years, you will have a full-fledged spruce, exceeding 1 meter in height.

Such a bluish-green beauty will become a real garden decoration or successfully complement landscape composition... It is quite difficult to grow plants with your own hands, but due to the entertaining process and in case of a positive result, when it turns out that the efforts were not in vain, you will certainly be proud of your herringbone tree.

I am disabled, and I would like to grow in an apartment and always have my Christmas tree in a pot for the New Year. Several times I bought Christmas trees with a clod of earth; how long they were in this state is unknown (although the sellers say: "They just dug it up, put it in a pot, and it will grow"). But after planting the Christmas trees, after a while, without turning yellow, they crumbled. I live in an apartment (in Nevinnomyssk, Stavropol Territory), a balcony on the north side. In addition to the Christmas tree, which of the conifers would you advise to buy in order to grow in these conditions? And it's a pity to watch every time a tree dies ...

First of all, I want to say that the Christmas tree generally does not adapt well and grows in indoor conditions, it is better to plant it in the yard of the house or in the garden. Conifers of temperate latitudes are not suitable for indoor use (they do not live in a room for a long time); most often southern species of conifers are used for this.

Only a few types of conifers are suitable for indoor conditions; more hardy cypress, cypress, thuja, cryptomeria, araucaria are often grown. For the northern side, of the conifers I have listed that are suitable for a room, cypress, cypress and thuja are more suitable, then, according to the need for lighting, there is araucaria, but do not buy cryptomeria - this breed is very light-loving, and it will be a little dark for you on the north side.
In December, they start selling "festive" conifers, whose twigs are sprinkled with sparkles and artificial "snow" - do not buy them in any case, they will definitely dry up soon after the New Year - these plants that people, not residents, mocked at ...

If a plant is sold with a clod of earth, it is considered to be an open root system! This packaging is only suitable for planting in the garden. Buy conifers for your home only in a pot!
Conifers in a room are a source of health and positive emotions: they have decorative and aromatic greenery that has antibiotic properties and purifies the air in the room; they can be decorated with small toys for the New Year.
If you want to grow a Christmas tree in a room, then you need to provide it with as cool light conditions as possible, fresh humid air, proper watering and spraying. I repeat once again: be sure to buy a Christmas tree with a closed root system, that is, already growing in a container, since this plant tolerates transplanting very painfully and may die at the very beginning precisely because of the transplant!

It is better to keep the Christmas tree not in the back of the room, but on a bright cool glazed balcony with a temperature of + 6- + 10 degrees. When in winter, in frosts, the temperature on the loggia will drop and stay around zero, you need to make sure that the earth in the container does not freeze. In the absence of a glazed balcony, you can put the Christmas tree on a light cold windowsill, close to the glass, periodically turning the pot slightly relative to the glass for uniform illumination and cooling of the entire crown so that the needles do not crumble.

Next to the Christmas tree in the room, place wide vessels filled with water, from which there is a constant evaporation of moisture; ideally if the electric humidifier is periodically turned on. If a heating battery is running in the room, then the plant must be protected from the flow of warm air, the tree must be regularly watered, sprayed and ventilated.
The water used for watering and spraying the Christmas tree must be defended and softened (if you live in an ecologically clean place, you can take melted snow water or melted ice). The temperature of the water used should be room temperature. The Christmas tree is watered as the soil dries up in the container, providing an even moderate moisture content of the substrate. It is important to get used to watering the Christmas tree and not to allow either the soil to dry out or its excessive waterlogging, so that the plant does not suffer from small suction roots.

If the listed conditions for keeping the Christmas tree are unfavorable, the needles will begin to turn yellow and fall off, which is an alarming sign. It is impossible to restore fallen needles on the branches of the Christmas tree, since new needles will grow only at the ends of the bare branches.
In the spring, you need to shade the Christmas tree from the bright and every day more and more hot sun, otherwise the plant will receive sunburn. If you wish, you can plant a spruce winter-hardy species to the garden at the end of the spring frosts, choosing for it a place protected from the midday sun with moist, dense soil. It is important not to deepen the plant when planting - the soil level in the pot and in the garden must exactly match.

Make you think. Is the two-week presence of the tree in the house worth such victims? It is even sadder to watch the picture after the New Year, when the former "green beauties" thrown away everywhere flaunt. Exists Alternative option purchase a live Christmas tree. She will delight you with her appearance even after the end of the winter holidays. No, this is not an artificial tree, but a decorative spruce in a pot. Caring for her is a little more difficult, but in the end you will get a real beauty in your garden.

Choosing a Christmas tree

Spruce in a tub is a great way to slow down the deforestation of coniferous forests. In addition, it ceases to smell after a couple of days, and crumbling needles now and then dig into the heels. This cannot be said about the planted spruce. Decorative species are striking in their variety, even the most gourmet gourmet will be able to choose a plant to their liking.

If you decide to buy a Christmas tree and plant it yourself, pay attention to its root system. Her condition will be a harbinger of the plant. In conifers, it is predominantly deep. If, due to its length, the tree does not fit into the pot, find a large container or plant it in open ground. Do not under any circumstances shorten the root of the plant, otherwise it will live no longer than a felled spruce. The decorative dwarf beauty has a more compact root system. Therefore, this species is great for growing in a pot.

When buying an already planted Christmas tree, keep in mind that in a tight container, the roots of the plant are formed quite tightly. Having chosen a suitable tree, do not rush to pay. Ask the seller to remove it from the pot to show the root. There are unscrupulous traders who cut off the interfering part and sell the plant. And what will happen to such a tree, we wrote above.

Decorative spruce in a pot. Care and its features

On the eve of New Year's holidays, it's time to go for the symbol of the New Year. But what to do after the spruce has been bought? The description of the tree will help you learn the features of growing and caring for this plant.

Conifers grow rather slowly, so they can be in a tub for several years. To do this, you need to properly keep the spruce in the pot. How to care for such a plant is described below.

You need to water the spruce in a pot at least 3 times a week, the best option- in one day. To do this, spend 2-3 liters of water. Carefully make sure that the soil in the pot does not dry out, and this can be if the air in the apartment is dry.

Remember that a decorative fir tree in a pot cannot stay in a heated room for more than two weeks. Caring for her in room conditions is simple: regular watering and high humidity. After the New Years, send the winter beauty to a balcony or other cool but well-lit place. Sharp drop temperature can harm the plant, so it must first be hardened. To do this, leave the tree for several nights in a room where it is about 7 degrees below zero. To prevent the root system from freezing, insulate the pot. Use hay, straw, and other materials.

To improve the growth of the tree and its condition, replant the plant every 2-3 years. Choose a pot a few centimeters wider than the previous one.

Spruce, like all plants, requires regular watering, which stops with the onset of real frosts. In the spring, it is recommended to fertilize the soil, and to feed the tree with a complex one, which is applied along with water.

We carry out a formative pruning

Such a question arises for everyone who asks himself to grow a spruce in a pot: "How to care for a plant so that it takes on a beautiful shape?" The answer is simpler than it sounds. To obtain lush tree symmetrical shape, it is necessary to regularly carry out formative pruning. This procedure is carried out in early spring in dry weather, when the plant has not yet entered the active growth phase. When pruning, stick to the natural crown shape and only shorten branches that are too long. This will stimulate branching, and you will get a beautiful lush tree. You need to cut the branch immediately after the joint, from which new branches will go.

Important! You cannot prune a weak or sick tree, since after the procedure it may not recover and will begin to dry. Prune branches only to green needles, as the stiff part does not give new shoots.

Transplanting a Christmas tree from a pot to a garden

After the tree has successfully overwintered, it can be transplanted into the garden. The best time for transplant - spring. To do this, prepare a hole that is slightly larger than the pot. Before planting, you need to fertilize the soil, so put compost on the bottom. Remove the tree from the pot and plant it in the hole. Then water liberally.

What can replace a Christmas tree?

In addition to Christmas trees, other conifers are also grown in pots: pine, fir, holly, sciadopitis and others. These trees grow very small and grow very slowly, which is a good substitute if you are not satisfied with a decorative spruce in a pot. Caring for a pine or fir is the same as for a Christmas tree. The only difference is that pine can withstand quite severe frosts if the tree is hardened beforehand. Glauca Globosa. The height does not exceed one and a half meters. The needles are bluish in color, frost-resistant and unpretentious.

Montgomery. The height of such a spruce is about two meters. It tolerates drought, frost and pruning well. Spruce has an unusual color. Bluish needles at the tips of the branches, greener - closer to the trunk.
