New upholstery for chairs with your own hands: a stylish rework. Do it yourself: How to update the upholstery of a chair with your own hands

Beautiful covers different shades usually used to perfectly disguise the well-worn upholstery of chairs. This option is really successful. Should you spend money on slipcovers if the chair doesn't look good enough?

If you dare do the upholstery of chairs with your own hands, be sure to find out for yourself what assembly work will be needed. It is up to you to decide if you need to replace the upholstery.

Restoring a chair is easy enough. But work requires careful attention. The old fabric is completely removed. After this, a thorough inspection of the entire surface will be required. If necessary, carry out repairs. Then a new filler is prepared and the upholstery fabric is necessarily strengthened.

Upholstery. Preparatory work

Any business you want to do efficiently and quickly, not an exception to the upholstery of chairs. And when it is done with your own hands for the first time, there can be a lot of "delays". For this, you must definitely prepare.

Any fairly dense canvas will do. If desired, leather (artificial or natural), wool or tapestry can be used.

Foam rubber of a certain thickness is suitable for stuffing. Batting, latex, synthetic winterizer are also often used.

Don't forget the furniture stapler, pliers, and screwdriver. You will need them during the restoration process.

Your chair may need some preliminary repair. If it is "flimsy", then it must be carefully glued, possibly nailed somewhere. this must be done at the preliminary stage. In this case, you do not have to remove the updated upholstery later.

And also such advice: "If the chair is" flimsy ", its wooden part is" killed ", then throw out such a chair and buy a new one. Restoration is relevant when the repaired chair is no worse than the new one."

Removing old upholstery

The chair is disassembled beforehand. Initially, carefully remove the seat. Then the chair must be turned over. Then unscrew the bolts and remove the staples. All work must be done as carefully as possible. There is no need to rush in such a matter. As a result, you will be able to upholster high level... Pliers are used to remove the staples. The screws are easy to unscrew with a regular screwdriver.

Be sure to find out how stable the entire structure is. If the legs are loose, they must be strengthened. All loose connections are sealed. To seal cracks, a mass of sawdust, PVA glue and dye is used.

If the chair doesn't need to be repaired, start by removing the old tissue. After that, you can move on to creating a new upholstery. The staples are removed carefully. Frequent upholstery material can be used to create a pattern. The removed upholstery can now be thrown away. The same manipulations are done with the back. The works are carried out in the same sequence as we described above.

Features of fabric and printing

Prepare the foam and fabric of your choice. Make a pattern. A strong and tight fit of the material is required. It's important to use a template. It is made of paper. I use wallpaper for this. The process itself is not difficult. After the chair is completely disassembled, the seat is placed on the paper. face side and trace it neatly. It is required to retreat from the line at least 5 cm. This margin is provided for the hem. The template is carefully cut out and everything marked up is carefully transferred to the material.

Suitable for stylish upholstery:

  • Upholstery fabric of sufficient density. We recommend paying attention to high-quality wool, carpet cloth, velor with or without ornament.
  • High quality leather (artificial or natural).

The choice depends directly on the features of the interior and the textiles used in the interior. It is important that chairs and upholstered furniture are in harmony in style and color. We recommend that you prefer textiles that are ideally matched to bedspreads and at the same time well repeat the pattern of curtains.

The filling is traditionally foam rubber. For optimum security, we recommend carefully positioning it on the seat and sticking it on. Do not use a thick piece. In this case, it will be simply uncomfortable to sit on the chair. It is best if you focus on old stuff... You need to purchase not only textiles and foam rubber, but also suitable threads. Use only those with optimum strength. Moreover, in color, they must match the fabric. If you need to hem the edges of the fabric, you simply cannot do without them. This will also be needed when the pattern is not so simple and is made not from one part, but from several.

Self-hauling furniture

To change the upholstery of chairs correctly, you must follow a certain sequence:

Initially, the foam is glued to the base. In this case, all unnecessary is carefully cut off. Be sure to fold the edges before doing this. To strengthen the seam from the seamy side, staples are used.

Then they move on to cutting the fabric. Place the fabric on a perfectly flat surface (face down). A seat is placed on it (down with foam rubber). There is a margin for the required hem. The rest of the fabric is cut off.

A furniture stapler is used to fix the upholstery. The fabric stretches well. It is important that there are no creases and free places... Before this, the upholstery is folded, and the necessary points are outlined at which fixation will be made.

The upholstery depends entirely on the shape of the seat. It is much easier to get the job done if the piece of furniture is rectangular. If it is round, you have to try. The same can be said for the armchairs.

Be sure to pay close attention to how the legs are secured. Often special cutouts are provided for them on the seat. In the process of attaching fabric and foam rubber, you will have to remember this. Cutouts are required so that this space is completely free.

Take into account what size and what shape the grooves for the legs. If you do not take this into account in time, you will not be able to produce high-quality upholstery. You will not be able to assemble the chair neatly if you do not provide for the incisions in the fabric. There really is a way out of this situation. But it takes some patience. When you create a pattern, you need to pick up small wedges. They will very nicely surround the cutouts designed for fasteners.

In order to change the upholstery of your old, but so beloved chairs, you will not need a significant time investment. Do not forget about the neat design of the back. There is an option to replace the method of fastening the material from staples with studs (and sometimes vice versa).

And here is the whole process of self-upholstery in the video

The fabric is carefully stretched over the foam rubber. They bait her with staples. This will allow the nails to be nailed correctly. In this case, folds are guaranteed not to appear. Then the fasteners themselves are made. Always start from the top. The fastener pitch is different. It is not recommended to make it very large.

The restoration involves not only the obligatory polishing and subsequent painting of all its wooden parts.

I think you understand that do-it-yourself chair upholstery is not particularly difficult. But for some reason, everyone can cope with such work.

Furniture workshop "Encore" is ready to pull your chairs, armchairs, sofas, if you can't do it yourself!

Any furniture, having served for several years, wears out. And no matter how hard you try to handle it with care, there will still come a moment when its upholstery becomes dilapidated and outdated. Then the thought will arise to get rid of the old thing.

Chair measurement scheme and drapery.

But don't rush to throw it away old furniture, especially if you inherited it and is a family heirloom. You can try to restore your favorite thing. It is necessary to consider how the hauling of chairs is done with your own hands.

Dismantling the old drapery

The main condition for restoration is this: the frame of your chair must be strong and well preserved. Everything else is completely at the mercy of your imagination and diligence. If wooden frame it is significantly damaged or during operation it was struck by a wood beetle-grinder, it is almost impossible to restore such a chair.

We need to start with a careful examination of the chair to be restored. The old upholstery must be removed before starting refurbishment work. If some parts are damaged, there are cracks or chips, then these elements need to be repaired. Chips and cracks are glued using PVA glue or wood glue, and pulled together using clamps (a tool for fixing parts when gluing). You can use paper tape to tie small crevices. Excessive holes and irregularities are filled with a mixture of fine sawdust and glue.

Chair restraining tools: stapler, screwdrivers, pliers, drill, jigsaw, screwdriver.

Here is an example list of tools that can be useful if you decide to drag the chair with your own hands:

  • screwdriwer set;
  • nail puller;
  • pliers;
  • bit;
  • woodworker's hammer (mallet);
  • scissors.

In view of the fact that only the replacement of the chair drapery is planned, all work on its dismantling must be done with great care in order to prevent breakage wooden elements constructions.

To remove the old seat upholstery, first remove all the nails securing it with a nailer. We must make every effort to do it carefully. The covering fabric must remain intact, as it can later be used as a pattern for new draperies.

Having safely removed the facing material, with scissors you need to cut the twine holding the sacking and the filler within the boundaries of the structure. To remove the springs, you need to cut the string that strengthens them, and then pull out any excess nails.

Removing the fabric from the back of the chair is done in the same manner using the same tools. And first, the upholstery fabric is removed, and then the burlap and filler, which form the basis of the chair drapery. After removing all the upholstery materials from the chair, it will become available. interior- wooden frame. All wooden elements of the chair are carefully examined and, if necessary, they are restored. Usually it consists in strengthening the lathing, replacing some of the wooden elements with their further painting.

Padding of chairs

Assembly diagram and chair constriction.

Before you start repair work, the following should be taken into account. Since the hauling of chairs with their own hands is done mainly in order to save money, during it only heavily worn materials are replaced. When preparing for restoration work, you need to take into account some non-standard conduct of such work.

To fix wooden chair and upholstery constriction may require a specific tool used for upholstery work. This is usually:

  • furniture stapler;
  • cutter;
  • wallpaper hammer;
  • staples are furniture.

In addition, for restoration, you need to buy a strong and dense fabric for upholstery (tapestry, chenille, jacquard) in the amount of 1 meter. With a fabric width of 1.4 m, this amount of fabric is enough for 4 chairs; you may also need some materials, for example, foam rubber, batting or synthetic winterizer.

During long-term operation most of all, the parts of the chair that have a soft base are worn out and dirty. If the fabric covering the seat and backrest is completely worn out, it must be renewed.

All work required for this is carried out in the following order. First, the drapery is removed and the debris that has collected under it over the years is removed. When the condition of the springs is normal, they do not need to be disassembled or replaced. In this case, the base of the structure can simply be reinforced by applying new protective fabric strips over it. They are attached with a special stapler to the back of the seat.

White fabric is attached to the bottom of the seat, which allows you to hide minor defects and gives the product a completely finished look. Then the new facing fabric is tucked around the perimeter and stapled to wooden base so that the fixation is strong and durable.

Varieties of surface repair

It happens that the structure of the chair is such that there are no springs in it, and the base of the chair is in quite decent condition, then it is quite enough to seal it on top with a simple burlap. Using a stapler, it is attached to wooden base, folding the burlap around the perimeter. After attaching the material, the seat is inspected, all excess extending beyond the edges of the seat base is trimmed with scissors.

If there are springs belonging to soft trim parts, it must be borne in mind that they hardly wear out and can be used in the future. To give the seat an updated look, all you need to do is reattach and tie up existing springs, while trying to place them evenly over the surface of the base.

It happens that instead of the springs, the back of the chair and its seat are filled with special soft fillers: foam rubber, latex, sea grass. In such cases, the burlap is steamed from the back of the seat and synthetic winterizer, foam rubber, and plant fibers are added inside. Then the burlap is sewn up.

Now you know how to pull a chair, give it a second life. Previously, chairs were produced with a very strong frame, therefore, by dragging the new upholstery, you can extend the life of the chairs for several more years.

No matter how dear to you the furniture, but over the years it wears out and the time comes when it is no longer possible to use it. The first to become unusable is the upholstery on sofas, armchairs and chairs, it not only becomes obsolete, dirty, but also decays. Because of the unsightly appearance, you have to part with your favorite soft chairs. If your family has antique furniture, which you inherited, then there is a chance to restore it.

To carry out the hauling of the chairs, it is necessary to comply with the basic requirement - to preserve the wooden frame, but the final result will depend on the efforts and your desires.

If the chair is not very worn out and scuffs have formed in some places, then you can disassemble it - remove the back and replace the old fabric with a new one of a suitable shade. If the frame is badly damaged by bark beetles, then such a product can be restored, but the chair is unlikely to be as strong as before and over time it will still start to deteriorate and crumble. Carpenters advise against restoring furniture damaged by grinder beetles. Individual elements can be replaced, but if the chair is badly damaged, there is no point in restoring it.

In the 60-90s of the last century, burlap, felt, cotton wool and hay were used as fillers for upholstered furniture. Even now, some furniture factories continue to use technologies from the 90s in their production, and plant fiber is used as filling for chairs. Over several years of operation, such a natural filler quickly cakes, lumps can form in places, as a result of which the upholstery fabric quickly becomes unusable.

How to choose upholstery

When choosing a fabric for upholstering your chair, consider the following:

  • the density of the material - it must hold its shape well and be durable;
  • the fabric should be easy to wash;
  • the ability to process the surface soapy water or brush.

Popular fabrics:

  • jacquard - dense fabric, has good wear resistance, puffs do not form on it;
  • chenille is a popular upholstery material for upholstered furniture... The fabric is very dense and durable;
  • tapestry - made of cotton, the material can be washed by hand or in a washing machine;
  • nubuck or artificial leather- abrasion-resistant material;
  • velvet, flock - the fabric is durable, does not fade;
  • leather - "breathes", but not resistant to mechanical damage (scratches).

How to pull a chair with your own hands

In order for the chair hauling work to be completed in a short time, think in advance what materials you need and prepare the appropriate tool.

Instruments

List of materials and tools:

  • the cloth. It is best to use furniture fabrics for upholstering chairs - tapestry, flock or jacquard. They are abrasion resistant and durable. Before going to the store for fabric, you need to arm yourself with a centimeter and decide on the amount of material. Measure the seat of the chair and add another 10 cm to the resulting figure on each side. This stock will go to hem, as well as the height of the upholstery;
  • filler. Good recommendations received such a filler as sheet foam rubber (thickness no more than 40 mm), you can also use sintepon, batting or latex as a filler. Cannot be taken as a filler for chair sitting bulk materials(buckwheat husks, polyurethane or silicone balls), since the load on this part of the chair will be much higher than the load on the pillow. If you use a fine filler, then after a few weeks of operation, it will begin to crumble. If foam rubber is chosen as a filler, then its density should be from 30 to 50 kg / m 3. If you use a material of a different density, then the foam rubber will perforate and it will be uncomfortable to sit on such a chair;
  • thick cardboard to make a pattern;
  • glue and brush. It is best to take PVA at a hardware store;
  • a stapler and staples for furniture, or a cheaper option - small nails and a hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • tape measure and sharp scissors;
  • a ruler, pencil, chalk, or a bar of soap for marking.

How to remove old fabric

Work must begin by removing the old upholstery.

How to properly remove worn fabric:

  1. The seat must be removed first. To do this, turn the chair upside down and disassemble the fasteners in a strictly specified sequence (it is advisable to remember the procedure, since then you will have to assemble the chair back). First, we pry the fasteners with a screwdriver, then remove the nails, unscrew the screws and remove the metal pads. It is easy to pry the staples with a screwdriver and pull them out with pliers. If they are worn out, the staples can be thrown away, and all the rest of the fasteners can be folded into a separate bag so as not to lose.
  2. Now you need to check the condition of the wooden chair frame. If it is loosened, then the furniture hauling will not solve the main problem, appearance will be beautiful, but it will not be safe to sit on a wobbly chair. Therefore, first, it is necessary to eliminate all cracks in the wood (fill it with a colorless sealant or glue it with PVA glue), put in clamps, and it is advisable to seal the weakened joints.
  3. Now it's time to remove the old upholstery fabric. Put on the floor plastic wrap or add old newspapers. Peel off the old fabric and carefully remove all of the foam. At this stage, do-it-yourself chair constriction needs to be determined with measurements, so do not rush to throw out the worn-out fabric - you can just make a pattern out of cardboard or cut out a seat immediately according to the old pattern. Place the old linen on the wrong side of the new upholstery fabric and outline the outline with chalk.
  4. Now you need to put the fabric aside for a while and start with the base of the seat. Remove the remnants of the adhered crumbled foam rubber, remove the old glue.

We will prepare the fabric and foam rubber

Since it will be difficult for a beginner to draw a chair without a template, let's just start making it. You can make a template in different ways. First option: put a plywood seat on a piece of cardboard, circle it with a pencil. Now the plywood can be removed, and in our drawing add 10 cm on each side for allowances. Cut the template with scissors or a sharp clerical knife. Option two: let's use ready-made template and attach the old fabric to a piece of cardboard, outline the outline with a pencil. This will be our template. Choose for yourself suitable option and make a seating template.

We have a ready-made stencil - you can cut out the necessary part from a sheet of foam rubber with a sharp knife. Using the same principle, we make a template from fabric: we draw a contour and add another 10 cm on each side (let it be better to have a small supply of fabric than it will not be enough). We cut out the detail.

If you have chosen a fabric with a pattern, then it is necessary at the initial stage - the acquisition of fabric, to take this moment into account and take the material with a margin. Lay the patterned fabric so that it sits in the middle and does not move. If this rule is not followed, then the chair will not look presentable. Now you need to fix the fabric and mark it out.

In some chairs, instead of the usual plywood seating, you can see a mesh or rubber frame. When the wicker base is normal, then nothing needs to be done; if the material has become unusable, then it must be replaced with dense wide rubberized ribbons.

How to pull a chair

First, glue the foam rubber to the plywood. Foam rubber is glued to PVA glue. On the front (top) of the plywood seat, apply a layer of glue with a brush and apply foam rubber. Wait for the glue to set. Upholstery work can be started after the adhesive is completely dry.

When the glue dries up - check again if the foam rubber has adhered well - if there are not glued places, then it is advisable to fill them with glue and again wait for it to dry completely. Then you can fix the upholstery fabric. Lay it with the wrong side up, place the seat on top so that the foam is "facing" the fabric. Tuck the fabric (this is the stock) onto the plywood on each side. Stretch the fabric tightly so that the fabric does not wrinkle. Now take a furniture stapler and shoot the edges of the fabric against the plywood. Work sequentially, in increments of no more than 2 cm. Large folds should not form between the staples. If you see that large folds are formed in the places of the curvature, and furniture staples do not hold them, then you can strengthen these places with furniture studs. Hit the cloves with a hammer. Excess fabric can be trimmed after finishing the chair constriction.

If you are overtightening the square seat of a chair, then in the corners you need to lay folds and direct them to the center, fold the fabric, and then attach to the plywood.

We put the overtightened chair seat back on the frame, attach the plates first, and then fasten the screws. Do-it-yourself chair padding is completed. This is what the restored chair looks like:

Would you like to know how easy it is to upholster the seat of your chair with your own hands without much effort?

Then this article is for you! The photo shows dining chairs, but you can upholster any chairs in a similar way.

What you need for homemade products:

Construction stapler

Special glue (in this case, foam glue was used)

Screwdriver

Step 1. First, remove the seat from the chair with your own hands using a screwdriver. (Don't forget where you leave the screws so you can find them easily later)

Step 2. Using the chair, create a cardboard template slightly larger than the chair itself

Step 3. Using a cardboard template, carefully cut out the batting for the seat using scissors

Step 4. Apply a generous layer of glue foam to the top of the chair

Step 5. Then turn the chair over with the glue-smeared side down and lay it on the cut out batting

Step 6. After that it is necessary to determine the size of the fabric for the upholstery of the chair. To do this, you need to measure the chair, including the batting from all sides, taking into account both the length and the width.

Step 7. Cut the fabric + 4 cm to the resulting size.

Step 8. Take construction stapler, lay the cloth on a clean, flat surface and place the top of the seat, batting down.

Pull the fabric a little so that there are no ugly folds left, but you should not pull too much, this can also spoil the appearance and shorten the shelf life of the upholstery. Use a stapler to secure one side of the chair.

Step 9. Secure the opposite side of the chair

Step 10. Secure the third side

Step 11. Secure the fourth side of the chair

Step 12. As a result, you should get the following picture.

Step 13. Using scissors, cut off the excess fabric, leaving about 2 cm of fabric in the corners in order to "fold" beautiful corner as shown in the next step.

Step 14. Fold the corner, playing with the folds of the fabric, until you end up with a nice and neat corner. Then place 2-3 staples in this place, secure well and do this with each corner.

Step 15. This is how all 4 anchored corners look like.

Step 16. Flip the finished seat and oopla! You have a nice and comfortable soft seat.

Step 17. Attach the seat to the chair using screws and a screwdriver, and you're done - your homemade product is ready!

Do-it-yourself chair padding

Preparatory stage

Here is a list of tools and materials that we will need:

  • Fabric (chenille, jacquard, tapestry, flock). Before going to the store, you should measure the seat of the chair, adding 15-20 centimeters on each side. This margin is required for hem and upholstery height.
  • Filler (sheet foam rubber 40 mm thick, batting, latex, synthetic winterizer). When deciding how to pull the chair, choose the appropriate padding. Polyurethane balls, buckwheat husks and other bulk materials are definitely not suitable. Still, the seat of the chair is not as tight as the pillow, and it experiences considerable loads. After some time, the fine filler will begin to slowly crumble. If foam rubber is chosen for the seat, its density should be equal to 30-50 kg / m 3, otherwise, during operation, it will slip to the plywood itself.
  • Cardboard for patterns.
  • PVA glue.
  • Furniture stapler and staples (or hammer and furniture nails).
  • Pliers.
  • Screwdrivers.
  • Scissors, tailor's tape.
  • Pencil, chalk for marking material, ruler.
