Salvia officinalis: aromatic spice and natural doctor. Sage: planting, growing, care

Foreword

Over the course of many millennia, man has learned to isolate the beneficial properties of plants and use them for himself. This is a treatment, and correction of some imperfections in appearance, and useful food additives.

Herbal medicine is an irreplaceable form of treatment for many diseases. It is necessary to treat with herbs skillfully. At the initial stages of the disease, taking herbal medicines may be the main one, helping to reduce or even stop the development of the disease.

The healing properties of sage have been known since ancient times. Traditionally, the use of infusion from sage leaves for rinsing with acute tonsillitis and chronic tonsillitis, stomatitis, gingivitis, acute respiratory diseases, aphthous lesions of the oral cavity, cheilitis, in the treatment of pulpitis, as well as for washing festering wounds, ulcers, burns and frostbite.

At the height of the disease, synthetic medications... At the same time, sage preparations serve as additional agents, reduce the toxic effects of basic drugs.

In the process of recovery, herbal remedies are gradually replacing synthetic ones, and by the end of treatment they are completely displaced.

In chronic diseases, the use of herbal medicines is determined by the patient's condition.

In this case, it is necessary to perceive the world as a whole with the body. All therapeutic and regulatory effects of herbal medicines (tonic, tonic, etc.) are based on this principle.

The approach in each case should be strictly individual, since medicinal plants affect patients in different ways. This is the basis of the principle of individuality of treatment - when prescribing herbal remedies, first of all, the living and nutritional conditions of the patient, his condition and course of the disease, the nature and conditions of work are taken into account.

An approximate scheme for taking single doses of medicinal plants by age is as follows:

- from 25 to 60 years old - 1 dose,

- from 15 to 25 years old - 2/3 dose,

- from 7 to 15 years old - 1/2 dose,

- from 4 to 7 years old - 1/3 dose,

- from 3 to 4 years old - 1/6 dose,

- from 2 to 3 years old - 1 / 8-1 / 4 doses,

- from 1 to 2 years - 1 / 12-1 / 8 dose.

Usually, a single dose of collection from dried parts of plants is 1 tbsp. or a dessert spoon, this is 5 g.

Most diseases are chronic, which in turn requires long-term, most often continuous, long-term treatment. Mild-acting, non-toxic herbal medicines work best for this principle. The course of treatment lasts from one to several months. To avoid the body's addiction to the therapeutic effect of drugs, it is necessary to change the composition of the fees for a similar in pharmacological properties.

At the initial stages of the disease, food products with a healing effect are prescribed (garlic, beets, honey, etc.). With a more pronounced nature of the disease, herbal remedies are added. With further complications, potent synthetic drugs are added.

The highest therapeutic activity is achieved:

- for hormonal drugs in the morning;

- at stimulants of the central nervous system during the daytime;

- for sleeping pills, tranquilizers, antibiotics, cardiovascular drugs in the evening;

- in diuretics (diuretics) in the afternoon.

The medicinal plant has several types of effects, each of which has a different degree of severity. When choosing one plant, the dominant influence plays the main role. But even weakly expressed effects are intensified in the collections, which increases the effectiveness of medicinal plants, and therefore the collection itself.

Sage leaf is part of a number of gastric and breast emollient collections, as well as in the main collections used for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.

After a year of storage, sage loses its properties. Ancient physicians Hippocrates, Dioscorides called sage “sacred herb”.

Herbal Treatment Principles

Each plant has its own characteristics of action on organs and their functions. The effect of one and the same plant on the body may be different and depends on the characteristics of the organism.

The effectiveness of the action of one plant is significantly lower than that of a group united by the direction of their action. The use of collecting herbs is especially effective in the treatment of chronic diseases and in cases where concomitant diseases occur.

Medicinal plants are taken both internally and externally. For ingestion, use a decoction of herbs, an infusion, juice squeezed from a plant, a powder from dried plants (dry the grass, grind it on a coffee grinder, take it on the tip of a knife with water). Outwardly, plants are used in the form of baths, enemas, lotions, compresses, ointments. To obtain juices, the use of electrical appliances is undesirable. Juices are consumed one hour before meals. After pouring boiling water into a thermos, never close the thermos immediately (you get dead water, which can be used to wipe wounds, but do not take inside). Leave the thermos open for 5-10 minutes in order to remove the heavy hydrogen.

It is very useful to walk in the forest. The air of the forest contains about 200 biologically active substances that have a beneficial effect on the human body. Walking in the forest, breathing forest air is very beneficial for the body. And a bouquet from the forest can be brought home. An excellent healing effect is exerted by the evaporation of leaves of birch, oak, pine needles, fir, cedar, juniper. Healing bouquets of branches are good not only for inhalation. They will decorate your home with their look.

Never use tea leaves (including herbs) that have stood for more than a day. Freshly brewed tea contains substances useful for the body, while old tea contains harmful ones.

The most appropriate oral dose is 1 tbsp. a spoonful of chopped herbs in one glass of hot (70 ° C) water. Higher temperatures destroy not only proteins, but also light essential oils, which have a healing effect. Infusion lasts from 15 minutes to one hour. To extract more persistent substances after using the first infusion, the same herb is poured with the same amount of water and boiled for 5 minutes.

If the mixture contains bark, roots, seeds, it is better to prepare decoctions.

In the most ancient medicine, Ayurveda, powders made from dried herbs are most often used. Prepare them with a mortar or mechanical mill... Powders are faster acting. Powders are especially effective for gastrointestinal diseases.

From medicinal herbs, you can prepare medicinal oil, which is used for massage, lubrication of wounds. For one part of the herb, take 4 parts of oil and 16 parts of water. The mixture is boiled over low heat until the water evaporates. Fragrant herbs are added directly to the oil and infused for 24–48 hours.

There should be herbs at home for all occasions, they will protect and heal from diseases, as well as support the body's defense system.

It is important to collect and store the herbs correctly. It is best to collect herbs in dry and clear weather. Grass and flowers are harvested during flowering; the roots are dug up in the fall, during the period of wilting of the ground part of the plant, or in early spring; the seeds are harvested when they are fully ripe. Exceptions to these rules are indicated in the description of the plants.

Each of the plants must be harvested separately, never mixing them with each other. All varieties of plant materials - flowers, whole plants, fruits, bark or roots - are always dried in the shade, in a well-ventilated place. This general principle applies not only to medicinal raw materials, but also to fruits and vegetables, which for some reason many housewives try to dry under the scorching rays of the sun. The sun, of course, is a friend of plants, but only in the process of growth. Once the plants are plucked, it becomes their enemy. Under the influence of sunlight, processes occur that destroy the medicinal and vitamin value of the harvested plants, fruits and vegetables. Each of the raw materials should also be dried and then stored separately, in tightly sealed tin or glass jars (no plastic!). Keep in mind that the stronger the plant smells, the more airtight the package should be - after all, the smells almost always contain some kind of healing component. And even more: both collected with one's own hand and purchased from pharmacies medicinal raw materials (even packed in bags) should be kept away from other odorous substances, since herbs easily absorb foreign odors.

The dried herbs should break easily, but not crumble, and almost have their natural color. It is necessary to store collections of herbs or individual herbs in paper bags or glass jars and be sure to write the name of the herb and the date of collection of the herbs.

With improper storage of herbs, collected and dried medicinal plants lose their healing properties, and sometimes become completely unusable.

An important rule for storing herbs is keeping each type of plant separately. The place for storing herbs should be completely dry, clean, dark. Poisonous plants are stored separately from non-poisonous ones, and odorous plants - from odorless ones. It is best to store herbs in cotton bags or glass jars. But the bags are still preferable, the dried plants breathe in them. Be sure to sign each container with the name of the herb and the year it was harvested.

The duration of storage of plants is determined by the shelf life of the active ingredients that are contained in different parts and organs of medicinal plants.

It is necessary to observe the shelf life of medicinal herbs, subject to all conditions:

- herbs, flowers, leaves, buds - two years,

- fruits - three years,

- roots, bark, rhizomes - up to five years.

Sage

Description of the plant

"Salvia" - "salvation", this is how the name sounds in Latin, more familiar to our ear, like sage. Asia Minor is rightfully considered the birthplace of this beautiful plant with delicate bluish-lilac flowers. Later, sage began to be cultivated in the countries of the Balkan Peninsula and the Mediterranean, after a while its fame reached northern Europe. Ancient Greek physicians considered sage to be a sacred herb. Its name comes from the ancient Greek words: sun and health, well-being.

Currently, sage is cultivated in many countries of the world, for example, in Europe, some regions of Yugoslavia and France are engaged in the cultivation of this medicinal plant, sage fields have survived in Ukraine, Moldova, Crimea and the Caucasus. It is not found in the wild in Russia, but it is successfully grown by gardeners.

Sage is a wild perennial medicinal plant with a characteristic strong aroma. In nature, there are different types: meadow, nutmeg, medicinal, Ethiopian. Their appearance and useful properties are largely similar, although each species has its own smell that distinguishes it from others.

There are about a hundred varieties of sage in the world that have healing properties to varying degrees. There is also a hallucinogen plant among them, although its homeland is located across the ocean, in Mexico. In our forest-steppe zone, meadow sage, which has long been used in folk medicine, is widely represented. But its medicinal properties are significantly inferior to medicinal sage, specially grown in gardens and vegetable gardens. This plant is unpretentious, drought-resistant, so it does not create any particular difficulties for gardeners. Only some species have useful and medicinal properties: they are medicinal sage (pharmaceutical), clary sage, Spanish sage, Ethiopian sage.

Often meadow sage (field) is confused with medicinal sage, attributing the same medicinal properties to it, but this is not at all the case, medicinal properties field sage is much weaker and hardly ever used.

Sage is a perennial shrub up to 75 cm high. It has dozens of varieties. Sage stems are numerous, tetrahedral, densely leafy, woody at the roots. The leaves are opposite, petiolate, silvery-greenish in color, often covered with a felt bloom. It blooms in the second year of the growing season.

A feature of sage is that the largest number medicinal substances are accumulated by a plant grown by man. Sage is a semi-shrub, so in nature, old shoots take up a significant part of nutrients, but the healing effect from them is not great. In the garden, sage is constantly rejuvenating, leaving only young shoots on which leaves filled with life-giving power grow, and in the summer spike-shaped inflorescences with medium-sized blue-violet flowers appear.

Sage leaves contain vitamins, phytoncides, essential oils, alkaloids, flavonoids, organic acids, resinous and tannins, natural antioxidants, and much more useful. Sage has pronounced anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, hemostatic, restorative properties, increases the secretory activity of the digestive tract, the secretion of gastric juice, significantly reduces sweating.

Medicinal sage is a semi-shrub up to 70 cm high, with gray-green wrinkled leaves, up to 8 cm long. It is grown in gardens and flower beds as a medicinal and ornamental plant... In June-July, it blooms with light purple flowers, collected in loose spike-shaped apical inflorescences.

In the wild, it is found in warm and temperate regions of our planet.

The plant has erect stems. They can be branched or simple. In growth, sage can reach a meter and a half. The leaves in most species are whole, but they can also be pinnately dissected. The top side of a sage leaf is darker than the bottom side.

Sage flowers are collected in spike-shaped or paniculate inflorescences. They are white, yellow or purple in color. Now breeders have bred flowers of other colors. The corolla consists of two parts (lips). In 25-30 days after flowering, the seeds ripen, which are in the fruit, which consists of 4 nuts. Garden sage in our flower beds is an annual, less often it is a perennial crop. In general, sage can be roughly divided into two groups.

The first includes sage, which cannot winter outdoors. These are mainly herbaceous plants that grow in the wild in the tropics. Although they can grow in their native climate for several years, our winter is destructive for them. Sage from the first group has different dates from planting to flowering. Those of them that take more than three months to do this need a seedling method of planting in open ground, sage with a short period from planting to flowering can be planted by seeds directly into the ground.

The second group includes those sage that tolerate winter well. These plants are grown as perennials. The most famous plant in this group is the Ethiopian sage.

Chemical composition

All parts of the plant contain essential oil, the amount of which in the leaves is 1.3–2.5%.

The essential oil consists of D -? - pinene, cineole,? - and? - thujone, D-borneol and D-camphor. Oleanolic and ursolic acids were also found in the leaves. The fruits contain 19-25% fatty oil, represented mainly by linoleic acid glycerides.

Sage leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins and resinous substances, organic acids (oleanolic, ursolic, chlorogenic, etc.), vitamins P and PP, bitterness, phytoncides, as well as a significant amount of essential oil containing pinene, zioneol, thujone, borneol , salvene and other terpene compounds.

All of these active ingredients form the basis chemical composition sage medicinal (medicinal sage).

The healing properties of sage have been known for a long time, they are used by both scientific and traditional medicine. Sage has anti-inflammatory, disinfectant, astringent, analgesic, expectorant, diuretic, carminative, estrogenic, anti-putrefactive effect.

The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of sage medicinal are associated with the content of tannic and flavonoid compounds in the leaves of the plant, as well as with the presence of essential oil and vitamins P and PP in the aerial part (grass) of the plant.

The antimicrobial activity of the plant is most pronounced in relation to gram-positive strains of bacteria, and to a lesser extent, herbal preparations of sage affect gram-negative strains of microorganisms.

The anti-inflammatory effect of medicinal sage is due to a decrease in the permeability of the walls of blood vessels and capillaries under the action of drugs, as well as the presence of hemostatic properties in the plant. The combination of these properties significantly potentiates the overall effect on the main links of the inflammatory process, including the possibility of inhibiting the vital activity of pathogenic microflora.

In addition, it was experimentally established that sage leaves increase the secretory activity of the gastrointestinal tract due to the presence of bitterness in the plant.

The galenic forms of the plant also have a slight antispasmodic, relaxing effect.

The ability of the leaves of salvia officinalis to inhibit perspiration has long been known.

Salvia officinalis is found not only in the wild, but also successfully grown as medicinal plant... It is grown for the preparation of medicinal raw materials, which are sage flowers, leaves and grass. It is cultivated in gardens, vegetable gardens, flower beds.

The aromatic and valuable plant has many types. There are annual varieties, as well as perennial, dwarf shrubs and shrubs, with flowers and leaves of the most varied colors. In Russia, there is no such diversity, but some cold-resistant species have adapted on garden and summer cottages. They are grown outdoors, in almost all regions of the country.

The most widespread among us is the medicinal sage as a garden plant. It is a semi-shrub with dark green velvety leaves and blooming blue-lilac flowers. Growing this plant is not too difficult. It reproduces well by known methods - cuttings, seeds, seedlings, layering and dividing the bush. Which method to choose depends on the conditions in which the sage is supposed to be grown. You can collect the seeds, and then sow them in late autumn or early spring to a depth of 2–4 cm. You can dig a bush in autumn, divide it into several parts, leaving in each part both the roots and the aerial part. But the easiest way is to propagate sage with horizontal layers. V summer time it is necessary to choose the most lush branch of the bush, and bend it to the ground. It is not necessary to cover it with earth, the main thing is that it is well attached to the loose earth. After a couple of months, roots form on the branch, then it can be cut off from the bush, divided into several pieces, and planted on seedlings. In the spring, it is necessary to transplant the plants to a permanent place.

The main actions that are required for sage are timely pruning and shearing of the bush. If you do not cut the plant, it will quickly stretch out, become bare and age. Regular haircut stimulates the formation of new shoots, and the plant shrubs better, blooms more luxuriantly and looks prettier. When the sage has completely bloomed, remove any dried flowers and trim the shrub in fall or early spring. Do not spare the branches, because the more you cut, the more young shoots there will be.

Also prune lignified shoots, leaving only a couple of centimeters of young greenery. For the winter, sage should be covered with compost or humus completely in order to protect it from freezing and ensure the growth of root shoots.

The beautiful and spectacular sage can also be grown as an ornamental plant. Pineapple sage, sparkling sage, elegant sage are very beautiful sage species, but they are thermophilic species, therefore they are grown only through seedlings as annual shrubs.

You can grow medicinal sage in the garden, on the balcony, and at home on the windowsill. This plant is quite unpretentious. It is only important to provide him with good lighting and not too acidic soil.

To get high-quality medicinal raw materials, take sage in your pharmacy garden sunny area with loose, fertile, humus-rich soil.

To plant sage, prepare a planting hole where you want to put drainage, sand and soil with humus. When transplanting, the plant usually does not get sick and very quickly begins to please the eye, attracting with its appearance.

Somewhere in the middle of summer, sage blooms, releasing arrows with flowers of cream or purple, and gradually turns into a bush with dense foliage.

Sage is photophilous and thermophilic. It is necessary to plant seedlings, because the development of a plant before flowering lasts at least three months, and for some varieties up to six months. Not very fertile soil is suitable for it, it is better with neutral acidity. With very fertilized soil, worse flowering is possible, but foliage is abundant. Freezing temperatures below 5 ° C will kill sage. The flower is unpretentious, but it can get sick when planted in a waterlogged area.

These plants are drought tolerant and like dry, permeable soils. Some sage are exceptions to the above parameters. Sparkling salvia loves fertile soils, and sticky - moist.

Depending on the ripening period of the plants, they prefer the seedling method or planting seeds directly into the ground.

For propagation of perennial sage, you can use the seed method, dividing the bush or cuttings.

With the seedling method, the seeds are planted in prepared boxes at the end of February. Shoots appear in two weeks. The first time you need to make a dive in the third week after planting. Then, when the seedlings grow, they need to be transplanted into peat pots, which are then buried in the ground. This should be done in early June.

Before the seedlings move into the open ground, they need to be hardened. This can be done using special hardening greenhouses, in which the seedlings are placed in April.

In the open field, the distance between the sage bushes should be about 25 cm.

You need to care for sage like many other plants: regularly weed, loosen and feed with mineral combined fertilizers.

Sage care is simple: regular weeding, loosening of row spacings. Top dressing is given 2 times per summer - at the beginning of the regrowth of shoots and during the budding period. Use diluted slurry (1:10) or combined mineral fertilizers at the rate of 15–20 g per square meter. m.

It is advisable to cover the plant for the winter, and in the spring those stems that have taken root can be separated from the mother bush and transplanted.

Sage can also be propagated by seeds, which must be sown in the fall or early spring into the soil to a depth of 3-5 cm.

The plant is easy to shear, after which the cut cuttings can also be rooted in a glass of water, and then planted on the garden bed.

Sage seeds are sown in late autumn or early spring (late April-early May). They sow to a depth of 3-5 cm, the aisles are made 50-60 cm wide. When sowing, you can add organic fertilizer to each hole - 0.5-1 kg of rotted manure or humus with 3-5 g of complex mineral fertilizer.

The optimum temperature for seed germination is 20–25 ° C, then the germination rate will be maximum - up to 75%. At lower temperatures, germination will be low - for example, at 5 ° C, only 15% of the seeds will germinate. They usually germinate in 15-30 days. Crops must be protected from the wind. Sage seeds are sown on seedlings 40-50 days before planting in open ground.

Sage will look very nice planted around the edges of the flower bed with dense bushes.

Good honey plant; in favorable warm and humid weather, it abundantly releases odorous nectar. In addition to nectar, it produces glue that bees collect. The honey is dark golden in color, with a pleasant smell. Honey productivity reaches 200 kg / ha.

Sage can be grown on the balcony. Choose containers for the balcony in light colors so that they do not overheat in the sun and serve as a good background for foliage and flowers. It is advisable to purchase a box made of plastic, as this is the most durable and convenient option. Wooden boxes begin to rot after some time, and from an aesthetic point of view they lose in many ways. The depth of the container should be at least 25-30 cm. The length can be absolutely any, the most optimal width is considered to be a width of 20-25 cm, although this is not essential.

There must be holes in the bottom of the container to drain excess water during watering, otherwise rotting of the root system of lovingly planted flowers on the balcony cannot be avoided. If these holes are not there, then you can make them yourself using a nail heated over a fire.

It is worth paying attention to the color of the box you have chosen for landscaping the balcony. It is recommended to choose a neutral color (light brown, white, green). Do not use black boxes, as they will attract Sun rays and then overheating of the soil cannot be avoided, which is not very good for plants.

When choosing pots for planting sage on the balcony, you should pay attention to the shape. Planters are angular, round, square, wall-mounted. It all depends on where in the loggia this pots will be hung. And yet, one should not choose containers that are too large in volume: the larger the pots, the more likely it will fall off the mount. For sage, a large pots are not needed, it has a small root system.

Mulch the soil in pots and boxes with peat from drying out. Water the plants with settled water with the addition of low-concentration fertilizers: alternate the application of mineral fertilizers and infusions of organic fertilizers. Use foliar top dressing as needed. Spraying in the morning and evening hours refreshes the plants and the air well.

Prune shoots that are too long regularly. Fight diseases and pests in a timely manner using preparations from plants.

We fill the bottom of the container with drainage, which can be small pebbles, gravel or expanded clay. The drainage layer should be about one centimeter. Next, we fill in the soil. There are also universal soils with a balanced composition of trace elements. This option is suitable for sage, since it is not the most capricious. The best soils for sage are dry, lime-rich, permeable, not too light. A variety of sage, salvia sticky, grows best on rich and moist soils, another variety, sparkling salvia, - on moderately fertile and loose, on moist and rich soils it blooms weakly. Sage salvia forest on heavy soils rots and loses strength. Before planting plants, the soil must be properly moistened. If the container is suspended from the outside of the balcony, then after planting, the topsoil is covered with the same drainage to prevent soil erosion during rain.

After the main flowering, cut the sage completely and the plant will bloom in late summer. Fertilization also contributes to the second flowering. Shorten sage by 2/3, then the plant will be more compact. Remove the shoots.

Seeds of glittering salvia are sown in February and early March in boxes. Seedlings usually appear on the 10-15th day. Seedlings dive twice. To obtain strong seedlings, the second pick is carried out in 9 cm pots. In April, they are taken out to greenhouses for hardening. They are planted in a permanent place at the beginning of June, after the end of spring frosts, maintaining a distance between plants of 20-25 cm. Hardened seedlings tolerate transplanting well. Perennial species are propagated by seeds, stem cuttings and bush division. Planting is best done in late August - early September. Young plantings in the first winter require shelter.

Most sage can be used for decoration as they are very beautiful. Brilliant sage is very effective in ceremonial compositions, flower beds, flower beds. Cultivars with compact habit are good for growing on balconies, in pots, flowerpots and containers. Much less often this species is planted in mixborders, however, it deserves wider use in mixed compositions, as it allows you to create bright spots that are decorative for a long time. Ethiopian sage is suitable for group planting against a background of stones: unusually beautiful and large rosettes of pubescent leaves in the first year of the growing season, and huge airy inflorescences in the second. Sage: bright red, mealy, green, whorled, sticky, meadow and oak - good in mixborders and groups. Their loose inflorescences do not give bright color spots, however, the variety of shades of lilac-blue gamut, large, picturesque bushes, excellent compatibility with other perennials make it possible to successfully use these species in landscape compositions. Compact sage looks great in the foreground of mixborders and can be recommended for rockeries as well. Sage is rarely used for cutting, however powdery sage is great in arrangement. Its dark blue velvety inflorescences retain their decorative effect in water for a long time, and when dried, they are an excellent material for winter bouquets. In dry compositions, you can also use faded whorled sage and green sage. The tops of the shoots are dried in bulk in the sand, while the spectacular purple or bright pink color of the bracts is completely preserved.

You can also grow sage on a windowsill. This plant is quite unpretentious. It is only important to provide him with good lighting and not too acidic soil. For growing in pots and flowerpots, decorative low and compact forms of sage are recommended.

Collection and storage

Medicinal raw materials are leaves, which are harvested in the second half of summer in the first year of vegetation, and in subsequent years of plant growth, the leaves are harvested 2-3 times from the beginning of flowering. For medicinal purposes, not only the leaves are used, but also the tops of the stems collected during flowering.

Sage is harvested and harvested during flowering, preferably in the morning. Leaves are harvested 2-3 times per summer, starting from the moment of flowering until autumn, but no later than September. In the first years of the plant's life, it is recommended to pluck only the lower leaves, and in the future - all the leaves and tops of the shoots.

Before drying, the raw materials are examined, the accidentally caught lower coarse stems, brown leaves are removed. Raw materials are dried in the air, in the shade, in well-ventilated places; you can also do this in the oven or in the oven at a temperature not exceeding 50-60 ° C.

Sage medicinal raw material leaves or flowering tops serve. They are first harvested in September of the sowing year. In subsequent years, the leaves are harvested two to three times during the growing season, starting with flowering and ending in September. Sage is also harvested by mowing the aboveground mass.

For seeds, sage is harvested during the period of brown seeds in the lower cups. During the budding period, its leaves and stem tops are harvested, which, when dried, are used in traditional and folk medicine, cosmetics.

The raw material is re-collected after plant regrowth.

Harvesting in the first year can be carried out not earlier than September, on older plants - at the beginning of seed ripening. Re-collection of leaves in autumn is possible. You can collect leaves up to three times per season: the first harvest in spring, when the plant forms buds, the last in early autumn. Sage grass and flowers are harvested when it begins to bloom. Dry raw materials in a well-ventilated area; it is important to dry the harvested plants quickly so that the grass does not turn black.

Raw materials are stored in various containers with good sealing. Shelf life is 1 year.

They are classified as thermophilic shrubs. The plant has an elongated shape and an average height of up to 70 cm. The sage leaves are oblong, pointed, have a rich green tint, and the flowers, collected in inflorescences, are colored light purple. A large number of essential oils are concentrated in the flowering tops, so they should be collected and harvested for medicinal purposes.

Sage bush

The intensity of the aroma, the content of essential oils, and the concentration of sage nutrients vary with the season of the year. That is why there are certain harvesting periods in the summer and autumn. You can meet lawns with sage growing in the wild in Slovenia, Macedonia, Croatia, Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece and other countries of southeastern Europe. In Russia and the CIS countries, wild sage is rare. It is mainly grown in private gardens and summer cottages.

The most favorable period for collecting leaves and flowers is the beginning of summer. It is then that the largest amount of essential oils is concentrated in it. You can start harvesting immediately after the blossoming of the inflorescences. For the preparation of the medicinal base, choose dark green leaves and lilac inflorescences. For the convenience of drying, we cut off the branches, where the lower flowers have already blossomed, and the upper ones are collected in buds. Summer collection time20 days after blooming.

Young sage

Further, the sage fades, and the secondary stage of maturation begins. Self-sowing takes place, new seeds are formed in the pericarp, which soon fall to the ground or are carried by the wind, and after the first rain they germinate, filling the area with young sage bushes. During this period, the plant is not harvested, its leaves and stems coarsen, and the concentration of nutrients decreases several times.

Try to harvest most of the sage in your area if you don't want the plant to fill most of your garden during the new bloom period. Many gardeners specifically devote large areas to sage, because, in addition to the medicinal use of dry leaves and inflorescences, you can also use its stems as green fertilizers for compost. Re-collection begins at the end of September. By this time, both young and old shrubs have time to fully form, on which green leaves and lilac inflorescences reappear. In terms of the set of nutrients, the autumn planting is not inferior to the summer one.

The collection process itself takes place in two ways. In the first case, you can pluck the leaves and inflorescences from the growing shoot, and in the second, you can trim the aerial part of the sage garden shears and dry it in a way convenient for you. It is recommended to remove not all leaves and inflorescences from the bush, but somewhere around 50-70% of the total. This will give you the opportunity not to plant new crops next year, but to get young shrubs from germinated seeds. Choose dry and sunny days for harvest, waiting for the moment when the morning dew has completely evaporated. Before harvesting, we recommend washing the bushes from dust with a hose and letting them dry thoroughly. During collection, pay attention to the quality of raw materials, excluding diseased and spoiled leaves, inflorescences.

If you do not have the opportunity to grow sage in your summer cottage, you can do it at home, creating special conditions. To do this, you need to have a cool room with great access to light, for example a loggia or balcony, where you could keep a constant temperature within the range from 0 to +5 ° С.

Sage has a pleasant aroma that lasts even after drying. But if you prepare raw materials incorrectly, it will have a musty smell. Therefore, start drying the plant immediately after collecting it. We wash the leaves and inflorescences under water at room temperature, not hot, otherwise the sage will lose half of its medicinal properties, and then lay everything out in an even layer on parchment paper or newspaper. Drying is carried out in a ventilated, dry room or under a canopy in the open air, not forgetting to turn the leaves.

Drying herbs

Also, you can not remove the leaves and flowers from the cut shoots, but collect them in a bunch and hang them upside down to dry.

You can use a dryer. This process must be carried out at a minimum temperature of no higher than 35-40 ° C in order to prevent the loss of essential oils and sage aroma. In dry raw materials, there should be no twigs, thick stems and other impurities. A simple test will help determine the readiness of raw materials. If the leaves break easily, they are well dried, and if they bend, we continue to dry the sage. At the end, you should have 25-30% of the original volume of fresh sage. Natural tea from such raw materials has an astringent and bitter taste.

Keep the leaves and buds intact, as essential oils evaporate from the crushed crop much faster. We recommend using breathable materials as containers for storage: cardboard boxes, paper or canvas bags, dry cans with a nylon lid. The room where dry sage will be stored must also be constantly ventilated. Subject to all these rules, the shelf life of raw materials is 2 years.

Sage, a pleasant-smelling herb, is often found in recipes.

But it turns out that sage has truly unique medicinal properties.

Useful properties of sage

  • Salvia officinalis is anti-inflammatory, disinfectant, antimicrobial and astringent.
  • It is used for diseases of the upper respiratory tract.
  • Externally used for angina, mumps, gingivitis.
  • It helps with inflammation of the gallbladder and liver.
  • The leaves contain essential oil, tannins, resins, acids, bitterness, vitamins P, PP, mineral salts.

For the preparation of raw materials, the leaves and tops of the stems are used. But unfortunately, sage is almost never found in the wild. But those who grow it on their plots should know the rules for harvesting it.

How and when sage is harvested

Sage is harvested in early summer, when its flowers are just beginning to bloom. For harvesting, dry, sunny weather is chosen.

Plants must be clean. If there is dust on them, then they must be rinsed with a hose or watering can and allowed to dry well.

Sage is a perennial plant, and it begins to bloom only in the second year of life. If the plant has never bloomed yet, then only the lower, well-formed leaves can be taken for drying.

And in a flowering plant, the leaves are cut off along with the upper part of the stem.

Before drying, the plants are sorted out, removing the lower stems, since they are rough, almost woody in sage and are not suitable for drying. Brown leaves are also removed.

How to dry sage

The stems are collected in bunches, tied with a coarse thread and suspended with flowers down in a darkened, warm, dry place where there is good air circulation.

Also, plants can be laid out on a canvas or burlap and, as the top layer dries, gently stir up the raw materials to avoid rot.

Sage is a very fragrant plant, but if dried incorrectly, it takes on a musty smell. Therefore, they dry it very quickly.

Sage can be dried in dryers, but the temperature should not rise above 40 °, otherwise essential oils will evaporate.

The finished raw material should consist of whole or slightly broken leaves. It is not customary to grind sage leaves, because then they quickly lose their aroma.

Well-dried leaves become very brittle and the stems brittle. When dry, sage does not lose its aroma. The taste of raw materials is bitter, astringent. The output of finished raw materials is 25-35% of the original volume.
