Picnic table - varieties

The appearance of picnic tables differs in the shape of the countertops - it is most often rectangular, but there are also models with a round or square, and sometimes curly surface. The legs can be made of steel, aluminum or wood.

Most often, folding picnic tables are rectangular in shape, but there are also round ones.

If the legs are placed parallel, it will be comfortable to sit at such a table, but the structure will become less durable. If the legs are criss-cross, they are very stable, but sitting at such a table is not very comfortable. For uneven surfaces it is desirable to provide for removable legs that could be adjusted in height. When choosing tables of this kind, you need to focus not on appearance and size, but on design features.

For picnics and other nature trips good option the top is made of lacquered plywood, as this material is moisture resistant and will serve for many years. This type of material is one that is easy to clean and does not absorb odors. It is convenient to provide an opening for an awning in the center of the tabletop to make outdoor recreation even more comfortable, but the ratio of the table and the awning should be well thought out so that the entire structure does not tip over from the wind.

Do-it-yourself collapsible table

Made of wood or laminated chipboard tables with parallel legs look very neat. The materials and tools you need to make a do-it-yourself picnic table are common, and you can find them in almost every hardware store. For a folding table you will need:

Drawing with dimensions of a folding rectangular table.

  • glued board made of natural wood;
  • timber;
  • reinforced washers;
  • furniture corners;
  • furniture hinges;
  • wing nuts;
  • rivets;
  • screws;
  • hacksaw;
  • electric drill;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • pencil or marker.

The picnic table, depending on the functionality, may have different sizes, but one detail is common for all folding tables.

The legs, namely the folding part, must be shorter than its height, otherwise the table will not be able to fold.

You cannot stand with your feet on such tables, as the folding legs can withstand less weight than a permanent one. Having made a table with your own hands, you can then decorate its tabletop with paints or using decoupage.

The procedure for making a table

Diagram of a folding square table.

The acquired timber needs to be cut to the size of the table, legs and crossbars between them will be made from it. You will need 4 identical legs for the legs and 4 identical crossbars that will hold the legs together at the bottom and top. You will also need a cross bar that will prevent the table from folding and skewing its legs.

Pairs of legs are laid out parallel to each other on a table or on a workbench in accordance with the width of the table and the crossbar. Place two crossbars in the upper part of the legs and twist the structure with screws in the corners. The diagonals of the resulting rectangle should be equal - this will provide stability for the picnic table. After checking, the structure is tightened tightly by adding metal corners. The second post is created in a similar way.

The racks made with furniture hinges are attached to the table top. The indentation from the edges is 3-5 cm. Then a keeper tape is attached to the picnic table. It is needed to fix the legs in relation to the table top. The tape on the tabletop is fixed with screws, then, with the racks in a vertical position, the tape is cut at the optimal length. On the stand, the ends are fixed with rivets and in such a way that they can be disconnected at any time.

Folding picnic table

This construction turns out to be quite light, and therefore is used for hiking, gardening and fishing. To get started, cut out the bars, with a prudent margin of diameter. It is very convenient to cut this kind of materials into circular saw... For the countertop, you can choose any material, but lacquered plywood or wood covered with several layers of varnish is preferable. Cuts must be closed edging tape, and the timber prepared for the legs is rounded off with a jigsaw or grinder.

First of all, they start assembling the legs and supports. The legs are crosswise fastened together using a large bolt 3-3.5 cm long.A marker or pencil markings for fastening are applied to the tabletop with inside... Installation of all parts is carried out using self-tapping screws for wood. Parts are numbered, and preliminary assembly takes place, after which the structure is again disassembled and all parts are varnished. After the day for which the varnish should dry, you can do the final assembly.

The desire to escape to the vastness of nature is increasingly prevalent among residents of cities and towns. One-day trips to the nearest body of water or multi-day fishing trips to other regions of immense Russia require careful preparation and organization. One of the essential elements of a camping life is a table. Wherein the best option will serve as a folding table, occupying as much less space in the trunk of your car and easy to carry. A wonderful option for a camping table can be easily made by hand.

The design is so simple that it can be made by any DIY skilled in the art various instruments... To work, you will need the following tools:

  1. joiner's hacksaw with small tooth for sawing parts;
  2. abrasive paper (sandpaper) of various grain sizes for finishing the edges of parts and the entire product;
  3. tape measure for measuring the lengths of parts;
  4. joiner's square for checking the rectangularity of the edges of flat parts;
  5. construction stapler with a supply of staples;
  6. drill with a drill of a suitable diameter;
  7. flat screwdriver.

In addition to the tools, the following materials must be prepared:

  1. a round rod with a diameter of about thirty millimeters and a length of one hundred and sixty centimeters;
  2. a hardwood lath with a section of fifteen by forty-five millimeters - six meters;
  3. two slats of the same section, fifty-four centimeters long each;
  4. two pieces of nylon belt twenty-five to thirty millimeters wide by fifty-four centimeters;
  5. brass threaded inserts having internal thread ten millimeters;
  6. four bolts М10 × 70.

Let's start the description of the manufacturing technology with the legs of the camp table. The best material they can be two birch rake cuttings, which are easy to obtain at any hardware store. Choose straight products to keep the table looking neat. Saw off four parts of forty centimeters with a joiner's hacksaw, clean sandpaper ends, slightly round the bottom edges. It will not be superfluous to grind the surface of the parts.

The next stage in making the table is cutting the birch slats into ten pieces of sixty centimeters each. According to preliminary marking, using a tape measure and a square with a carpenter's hacksaw, cut the blanks. To give smoothness, flatness and ends, sand with an emery cloth. Next, you need to sandpaper two pre-prepared parts, each fifty-four centimeters long.

This is followed by work on the manufacture of a flexible table top, which is a rack roll mat. Its basis is those ten slats of sixty centimeters. To connect the rails, we will use nylon straps and construction stapler... Lay the elements of the countertop on a flat, smooth surface, with the back side facing you, leveling their ends.

To maintain straightness, lay a rounded, even block along the ends. It is better to calibrate the distance between these parts with small elements with a cross section of one centimeter. Place the straps on the back of the rails, stepping back an equal distance from the ends. Pre-melt the edges of the belts in a lighter flame.

Using a stapler, attach the strap to the rails as shown in the attached photo. Keep track of the distance between the slats.

If the stapler does not slightly finish off the staples, then use a hammer for a tighter fit into the material. In this way, attach all the slats of the tabletop to the straps. Next, we proceed to the installation of threaded bushings in the legs of the travel table.

To do this, with a drill of the required diameter, drill blind holes with a depth of about 40 mm from one of the ends, then carefully screw in the bushings with a screwdriver, trying to maintain their alignment with the hole.

Now, with the countertop facing down, lay the prepared slats at an equal distance from the ends of the countertop elements and drill one hole in each slat (as shown below).

The diameter of the holes must be such that the bolts pass freely through them.

Do you want to relax in nature in comfort? Then a table is a must! Perfect option- folding model, which is characterized by mobility and ergonomics. A table like this can help out many times. Departures will not do without it:

  • for picnics;
  • fishing;

  • small size;
  • a light weight;
  • convenient for transportation;
  • made of durable material;

  • carry handle.

Features of product designs

When deciding to buy a folding table, it is worth considering where and under what circumstances it will be used. The requirements for such furniture depend on this.

When choosing a product, assess its size, appearance and design features of the frame.

Countertops

Tables differ in the shape of the countertops. The most common is rectangular, but round or square countertops are also common. But oval surfaces are less common.

The materials of the countertops are different. Wooden or laminated fiberboard looks very nice. But they need to be protected from precipitation. These are suitable for gazebos, covered verandas. A more practical one is a plastic countertop.

Table legs

They are made of wood, aluminum or metal.

More stable models with crossed legs, but these may not be comfortable to sit behind. It is much more convenient to sit at a table with supports parallel.
There are models with adjustable legs. This comfort will be appreciated on uneven surfaces.

Steel supports are often found in the form of a closed loop: such a table is more stable, does not “sink” into the ground. It is good if the steel is powder coated. The paint provides protection against corrosion and an attractive appearance.

For a picnic, a lightweight aluminum table is the best option. Also suitable is a model with aluminum legs, which are located crosswise, and the tabletop is made of varnished plywood. It folds and unfolds very easily.
And at the dacha you can buy a completely wooden table. A model with metal legs is also suitable, and a tabletop made of laminated fiberboard or plywood.

The disadvantage of all folding tables is that they do not withstand heavy loads, for example, you cannot stand on top of them.

When choosing products, consider the features of the materials:

  • Aluminum is lightweight but short-lived.
  • The tree requires additional maintenance (moisture protection).
  • Steel is durable, wear-resistant. Need protection against corrosion.

Manufacturing steps

  1. Cut four pieces of the same length from round bars. These are the legs of the future table.
  2. Cut off 10 boards, 60 cm long. You also need to cut out two planks 60 cm long, and 2.5 cm wide enough. Carefully sand all the sections with sandpaper to avoid splinters.
  3. Cut the nylon tape into two pieces 60 cm long. Burn the edges with fire using matches or a lighter.
  4. Spread the worktop boards evenly on a horizontal surface seamy side up.
  5. Having retreated from the edges of the boards 5-7 cm on both sides, across them furniture stapler staple two strips of nylon tape. So all the boards will turn out to be connected with a ribbon.
  6. We place thin strips across the tabletop (parallel to the ribbons) on both sides (which are 2.5 cm thick).
  7. Drill in the planks at the corners through holes for bolts.
  8. Drill 25 mm deep holes in the leg blanks (round bars). (To do this, the bars are fixed in a vice, each having been wrapped in cardboard beforehand). Insert brass threaded inserts into them.
  9. Everything wooden parts worth painting or varnishing.

The folding table is lightweight and compact, which allows it to be easily folded into the trunk of a car.

Varieties

This furniture comes in various shapes and sizes. They differ in the shape of the tabletop (round, square, oval, rectangular), material (made of wood, metal and their combinations), as well as the way they are folded.

The most popular type of folding tables is wooden. If you want to make it as lightweight and easy to transport as possible, then install an inexpensive chipboard countertop.

The easiest way to fold at tables with a cruciform foot. When folded, the dimensions of the structure change, but it itself cannot be disassembled. In addition, there are completely collapsible products. To create them, threaded fasteners are used.

If you want to do round table do it yourself, then you need to shape the tabletop before fixing. This will greatly simplify the assembly process.

Preparatory work

If you decide to figure out how to make a folding table with your own hands, then first assess your capabilities. Craftsmen who do not have impressive experience should give preference to the simplest models with cruciform legs.

Table sizes are selected depending on your own needs. It is important to consider the maximum possible load and operating conditions.

At home, it is easier to create a table made of wood. For the countertop, chipboard will be the best option. You will also need tools for work:

  • Electric jigsaw;
  • Level;
  • Paint brushes;
  • Ruler / tape measure;
  • Hammer, screwdriver;
  • Grinder (sandpaper).

The latter is recommended to be used only experienced craftsmen... Everyone else should give preference to regular sandpaper. Of course, using it will slow down the process of creating a table a little. But the product will turn out to be of high quality and beautiful.

For work, you need wooden blocks measuring 2 x 4.5 centimeters. If you are planning to make a large table, you can order 3 x 5 centimeters parts. As for the length, it ranges from one to five meters.

The material is cut into pieces the right size according to the drawings of the folding table. It is advisable to use boards for countertops that are thick (at least 4 centimeters) and durable.

Assembly

To connect the bars, you need bolts and screws. Their length is selected in accordance with the thickness of the selected materials. Bolts are used to unite the legs, self-tapping screws - to secure the footrests.

First you need to cut the right amount bars. It is advisable to make them a little larger than originally planned. The hole must also be larger than the fastener. For example, for M4 bolts, the hole diameter must be at least five millimeters.

Each piece after cutting needs to be processed grinder or sandpaper. To extend the life span, they are covered protective compound(paint or varnish).

It is important to securely fasten the footrests (four pieces). They are at an angle of 90 degrees in relation to the "goats" (folding legs with crossbars at the bottom). For this, ordinary self-tapping screws are used.

Three pieces are required for each support. The distance between them should correspond to the dimensions of the bar from which the "goats" are made.

To understand what it looks like finished structure, find on the Internet a photo of a folding table with your own hands. So you will understand what result you should get in the end.

All parts are connected with bolts. They are placed in the through central holes of the bars. It is not recommended to overtighten them. The axle should be allowed to rotate freely. "Goats" are fixed to the table top by bolted connections... Foot supports must be attached to them in advance.

If you are worried that the axle mount will loosen over time and fail due to constant folding / unfolding, then use locknuts.

If you want to make a compact table, then remove the bolts that connect the "trestle" and the footrests. It is allowed to pick up one or two bolts. Practice shows that it is not worth tightening the fasteners too much in these areas.

Reliable fastening and tightening of the bolts are required only for the foot supports. This is due to the fact that it is they who guarantee the normal installation of the legs.

Diy folding table photo

Any family loves to go out into nature, and for this you need a table and chairs, lightweight and foldable, which can be easily stowed in the trunk of a car.

The folding design has its own advantages and features.

It is worth starting with the choice of the material from which this structure can be made.

If you do not have experience with metal and plastic, for which you need a special large set of tools, then build a structure made of wood- it is easy to manufacture.

A simple picnic table can be made from planks, blocks, plywood or chipboard.

Wood has many advantages:

  • naturalness;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • durability with proper processing;
  • does not cause allergic reactions.

But there are also disadvantages:

  • wood is afraid of dampness;
  • she can be jarred from sunlight;
  • it is affected by temperature changes;
  • insects can spoil it.

For this reason, it will be necessary to carry out additional processing against decay, exposure to moisture and insects so that it does not change its appearance over time.

Metal Is an excellent, durable material that has both advantages and disadvantages.

Among the advantages are: environmental friendliness, long term service, aesthetic appearance.

Disadvantages:

  • a special set of tools is needed;
  • if choose thick metal, then the structure will turn out to be quite heavy;
  • moisture can corrode the metal;
  • requires some skill and additional processing.

WITH plastic it is much more difficult to work, but it does not have such disadvantages as metal and wood, and it does not require additional processing.

Advice... In addition, the table can be combined, for example, the table top is made of wood, and the legs are made of metal.

What material to choose is up to you, we will consider making a folding picnic table made of wood. For him you need to prepare:

  • wood glued board or plywood;
  • bars for legs;
  • reinforced washers;
  • corners for furniture;
  • furniture hinges;
  • nuts;
  • rivets;
  • black screws.

Dimensions and Drawings

The table can be made in any configuration, it can be:

  • square;
  • rectangular;
  • round;
  • oval.

The table can be made on a frame that folds easily, and, if necessary, is brought to the desired position.

Important... The legs play the main role in this design. Competent calculation of thickness and length, correct positioning of fasteners will ensure ease of folding into a compact position and good stability of the table.

Create drawing you can independently, based on your needs, taking into account the number of people who will simultaneously sit at the table.

But you can go along a simpler path - to find suitable drawing in the Internet.

Important. The folding part (legs) must be made shorter than the height of the structure, otherwise it will be impossible to fold the table.

Instruments

To quickly assemble the table, the following tools should be prepared:

  • hacksaw or jigsaw;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • emery cloth;
  • tape measure and marker.

Advice... If you use a power tool, it will be much easier and faster to work.
