How to cut a 45 degree ceiling plinth. How to cut the corners of skirting boards: solutions for different materials

All photos from the article

When someone first tackles the preparation of corners, most often they have to spoil more than one meter of material. Alas, even the acquired miter box does not always help with this, when the walls in the room are connected at an arbitrary, and not at a right angle.

Then you have to rely on your own eye or make a special template. Today you will learn how to make ceiling molding corners with and without a tool.

Tip: instead of the saw attached to the miter box, it is better to use a regular metal hacksaw. Its cut is more accurate and smoother, which is very important in this process.

Before starting work

Choosing the right baguette width is a guarantee beautiful interior... The method in which you do it also plays an important role in the sawing process. We would like to give you a couple of recommendations that will help you achieve your plan.

So how to choose the width of the material and how to trim ceiling plinth in the corners:

  • the prepared surface of the walls is not a standard of evenness, use slats of smaller width, as they are more flexible and can cover the maximum number of defects... Accordingly, on the contrary, the more ideal the surface, the greater the width of the molding can be, however, keep in mind - in rooms with low ceilings mount a narrow baguette so as not to reduce them also visually;
  • always apply the left side of the corner to the miter box while sawing on the left, the right side - on the right... In addition, this should be the side of the tool closest to you, the far side for the floor moldings. Please don't be confused.

Below we will deal with the task in more detail, where you will learn how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth correctly and with the highest quality.

External

There is one nuance of this process that you should never forget about. We always look at the ceiling fillet from below, therefore, when the plank is placed in the miter box (to the wall closest to you), it must be turned over.

The upper part of the molding will then be at the bottom, and the lower, respectively, at the top. Thus, there will be no gaps between the planes of the corner parts when they are connected.

The process instruction will be like this:

  1. Take measuring instruments, for example, a tape measure, and a pencil. Start at the inside corner so you don't miss the outside corner. It may happen that the length of the baguette is not enough and you have to make a lot of joints;
  2. Attach the molding to the ceiling surface and mark the dimensions;
  3. Prepare a miter box and a hacksaw for metal. Press the baguette to the side of the tool closest to you;
  4. Hold the fillet with your hand and select the position of the hacksaw at which the appropriate joint angle will be set. These can be standard parameters - 45, 90, or 135˚, or arbitrary, for which it is necessary to move the miter box to the selected degree;
  5. Cut the workpiece with a hacksaw;
  6. Install the opposite bar to the near wall of the tool and fix it by hand;
  7. Set the selected degree on the miter box and cut the workpiece with a hacksaw for metal;
  8. Join the resulting plinths.

Advice: if the walls are connected to each other at right angles, only in this case the miter box will help you in your work, otherwise you will have to do it yourself.

Interior

There is a professional miter box, which has a swivel platform and can be moved apart to obtain arbitrary angles, as well as for home use, where special opportunities are limited. Usually, it is enough to use the second option for repairs.

So, the basic principle is that the ceiling strips are cut off at the tool wall closest to you, we hope you have not forgotten.

The process in this case looks like this:

  1. Measure the required length of the baguette by attaching it to the ceiling surface;
  2. Place the molding strip in the miter box, while its position should fully correspond to the location of the baguette on the ceiling;
  3. Press the bar against the near wall of the tool;
  4. Choose the appropriate cutting degree, most often it is 45. Make sure that the handle of the hacksaw is as close to the hand holding the bar as possible to make the cut as accurately as possible;
  5. Cut off the workpiece, but do not apply excessive force to the hacksaw;
  6. Prepare and cut the opposite baguette strip, not forgetting that it should be pressed against the near wall of the miter box;
  7. Choose the appropriate cutting angle for it, leaving a minimum distance between the hacksaw handle and the hand holding the molding;
  8. Cut off the edge of the plank.

It remains to check the correctness of the joining of the segments, and, if everything meets the expectations, install them in place.

Tip: start cutting from the front of the molding, then you can orient it as accurately as possible in place. After cutting, process the corners of the wooden molding and file with a file.

How to make corners of a ceiling molding without a miter box

For the first time deciding to make a frame on the ceiling, the beginner does not see any problem in this, but in vain. We advise you to immediately take into account in the costs a certain amount of material that will simply have to be thrown away.

Alas, at what angle to cut the ceiling plinth depends only on the connection of the walls to each other. Not everyone corresponds to a straight line, for which it is enough to simply cut off the strips under 45˚. Often there are parameters corresponding to 85 or 95 degrees, but this is already a problem for novice finishers.

If you are the owner of an apartment built in the last century, this was generally considered the norm. The fact is that when you simply cut off the strips for 45˚ and install on the ceiling, there will be gaps between them, which then have to be sealed with sealant or putty. We will try to help you solve the problem with minimal cost, since the price of not every molding is cheap.

So, how to properly cut the corners of the ceiling plinth for the inner corner:

Preparation Prepare the tool that you need for work.

If the skirting board is made of:

  • foam or polyurethane, it is enough to have a sharp knife or hacksaw for metal;
Markup
  1. Take the molding and attach it to the chosen corner. Orient it in the same way as it will be installed in the end. With a pencil, draw a line along the plank and remove it;
  2. Repeat with the second fillet the same procedure as with the previous one. Moreover, it must adjoin the junction;
  3. As a result, you will get a marked area;
  4. Take a baguette, lean it against the markings. Transfer to it the point of intersection of the two lines you drew earlier;
  5. Draw a line from it to the opposite edge of the fillet, which will be the cutting line. Do the same with the second baguette.
Parting Use a sharp knife or metal hacksaw to cut off the edge of the molding.
Examination Take the two resulting baguettes and attach them to the corner. There should be no gap between them, otherwise carry out the surface correction with a knife.

Remember when creating:

  • inner corner - the lower part protrudes above the upper one;
  • outer - top over bottom.

Renovation of the premises and its interior decoration most often ends with the installation of ceiling plinths. Although some people prefer to refuse them, but even if the most professional master does interior decoration accurate to the millimeter, the repair will seem incomplete if you do not glue the ceiling plinth. When you do redecorating, most likely, against the background of other questions, there is another problem - how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth?

A ceiling plinth completes the interior decoration, giving the room a neat finished look.

Some features

Initially, everything seems extremely simple. In real repairs, people who are faced with sharp corners find that everything is not so simple as it seemed initially.

This problem arises because you cannot cut the ceiling plinth at a 45 degree angle. How to cut a corner of a ceiling plinth if there is no certain knowledge and experience? Let's try to answer this question.

To know the technology of working with a certain material, it is necessary to determine the properties of this material. To do this, we will find out, but what do such products consist of? Materials for making:

To work you will need the following materials:

  1. Miter box. This carpentry tool sold in all hardware stores. Choose the simplest option so you can cut at 95 and 45 degrees.
  2. Hacksaw for wood or metal. When choosing this item, take one with small and frequent teeth. In this case, the cut will be even and smooth.

But sometimes there is no way to buy a miter box. Therefore, we will consider two options for how to cut the corners of the ceiling plinth:

  • without a professional miter box;
  • with a miter box.

Cutting the corners of the skirting board with a miter box is as easy as shelling pears!

Fitting the skirting board on site before gluing is a mandatory step in the quality work of installing the ceiling skirting board.

If you bought a miter box or you already had one, then cutting corners will not be difficult. In order for the angle to turn out even, it is necessary to lay the plinth in the miter box in the position in which you will further attach it to the ceiling.

Hacksaw or knife? For a tree - just a hacksaw, for the rest, you can use a knife, but only on condition that it is sharp and thin. Otherwise, you risk ruining the baseboard.

Once the cut has been made, it may be necessary to adjust the angle before mounting. This is done with a file - for wood, for expanded polystyrene and polystyrene - with a sharp knife.

Cutting a ceiling plinth requires softness, tenderness, smoothness and serenity.

Do not use force at all, as this can break not only the fragile foam, even the tree can crack if you press harder than necessary.

Cutting the corner of the skirting board without a miter box is also not a problem!

But it is not always possible to buy a miter box (not in material terms, it is relatively inexpensive). There are cases of repairs in the country, when they initially forgot to buy, and a trip to the city will cost more than the miter box itself. Therefore, we will consider the next option - how to cut a plinth without a miter box.

  1. For this option, you will need a simple pencil, eye gauge, knife or hacksaw for metal (or wood). Find a tray that is similar in shape to a miter box. This will be an analogue. You can even choose the angle between the wall and the floor. First, mark the places on the material where you will make the cuts. Further, the work is similar to the work with a miter box. Lay the product in such a position in which it will be mounted on the ceiling. Holding a knife (or hacksaw) strictly in an upright position, make cuts along the planned meters. Tip: Use a protractor or a student's ruler for correct markings.
  2. Another method requires cardboard or thick paper... A template is made of cardboard, a line is drawn in it with a simple pencil - a landmark. After that, take two small boards and assemble them at a 90 degree angle. Further, the process is the same as with the miter box. Lay and start cutting the ceiling plinth in the direction of the selected corner.
  3. The third way to cut ceiling plinths is also quite simple. The method is similar to the first two - an analogue of a special construction miter box is also made. Take 3 boards and hammer them in the position that the miter box suggests. Take the student's protractor and draw 45 degree angle lines. Further, everything is as with a regular miter box.

Additional rules

With the help of the above tips, it becomes clear that cutting the corners of the baseboard for the ceiling is not difficult. But in order for the result to be of high quality, it is worth familiarizing yourself with some rules:

  1. Before attaching one part, it is worth adjusting the second. Before applying glue and fixing the product directly to the wall, attach both halves of it. In this case, the surface of the wall must be dry. So, you will check that the connection is correct so that there is no gap and gap. In case of mismatch, trim the joint with a sharp knife.
  2. Don't be nervous if it doesn't work right away. It's quite normal. Sometimes for proper cutting it is necessary to trim the element several times.
  3. It happens that the vertices coincide perfectly, and there is a small gap in the middle. Such an angle can be fixed, then the gap can be sealed with a putty. This is not scary, since the skirting board must be painted after installation. water-based paint.
  4. Particular attention should be paid to the length of the planks in the corners. The following rule applies here - for the inner corner, the length of the bar is adjusted from corner to corner. The outside corner is measured in the direction of the room from the inside point.

In the course of consideration, it is clear that cutting the corners of the ceiling plinth when there are only the most basic tools, such as a knife, a hacksaw and a miter box, is quite simple. You can save a little money and do without the help of a wizard.

If it is already very difficult for you to cut, you can buy ready-made parts to which straight strips are attached. Basically, it all depends on your abilities, skills and, most importantly, patience. Good luck!

Ceiling plinth is used to hide irregularities on the border of the wall with the ceiling, giving the interior an aesthetic completeness.

How to make a corner of a ceiling plinth without a miter box and with its help the first time is an urgent problem that this article will be devoted to.

What is a ceiling skirting board

Ceiling plinth or stucco molding can be made and expanded polystyrene, PVC or polyurethane are also applied. Scientific correct name ceiling plinth - fillet.

Polyurethane skirting boards are of the highest quality, moisture resistant, durable and elastic.

The disadvantage of polyurethane skirting boards is dependence on sharp changes temperature... This causes the skirting board to crackle when placed, for example, over gas stove... After cutting these skirting boards, permanent deformations may accumulate in them, which can lead to a curvature of the skirting board or corner.

Fillets made of polystyrene or expanded polystyrene have almost all the advantages of polyurethane; however, they break easily under mechanical stress.

The cheapest are polyvinyl chloride (PVC) skirting boards. The disadvantages of these skirting boards are the impossibility of removing dents, electrostaticity.

Fillet happens different shapes, length and width, embossed and without relief. Usually glued with glue to the junction of the wall and ceiling.

Advice! Do not use wide skirting boards on low walls and vice versa, do not glue narrow skirting boards on high walls. For walls with a height of 2.75 m, a 45 mm wide skirting board is often used.

For the fillet, fittings are sold in the form of corners made of the same material as the fillet. Corners are external and internal. They are glued in the corners of the room into which the skirting board is inserted.

If you refuse to use corners and decide to join two adjacent fillets right at the corner, the greatest difficulty will be the problem of how to correctly make the corners of the ceiling plinth.

Preparing the ceiling plinth for gluing in the corners of the room

In order to avoid gaps in the corners of the walls, consider how to make a corner of the ceiling plinth using the following tool:

  • Miter box
  • Saw for metal
  • Sharp knife

The miter box is a tray with slots at a certain angle. To cut plastic skirting boards, it is enough to use a miter box with angles of 45 and 90 degrees.

How to cut the inner corners of the skirting board?

Procedure:

  1. The fillet is applied to the gluing site and the measurement is carried out.
  2. The plinth is laid with the upper part, which will be glued to the ceiling, to the bottom of the tray so that the lower part is pressed against the wall of the miter box.
  3. The skirting board is cut with a metal saw or a sharp knife without pressing at an angle of 45 degrees along the slot of the tray, as shown in the figure below. If excessive force is applied while cutting, the skirting board may chip.
  4. Similarly, the adjacent skirting board is cut along another 45 degree slot.
  5. Two plinths are applied to the gluing site and, if necessary, small gaps are eliminated, correcting the cut with a sharp knife.

To quickly learn how to cut the corner of a ceiling plinth, you need to practice on small pieces of it.

How to cut the outer corners of the skirting board? It is necessary to put the plinth on the bottom of the tray with the side that will be glued on or in another room, in the same way as for cutting the inner corner.

To cut the outer corners into fillets, use other 45 degree slots, as shown in the picture above.

Advice! The task of trimming often appears outside corner fillets on one side, and inner corner on the other side. Before cutting the outer corner of the skirting board, cut out the more difficult inner corner first. V otherwise, due to the shortened damaged skirting board, a mismatch may occur in one of the corners.

Actions in the absence of a miter box

If it is not possible to use a miter box, and you do not know how to cut the corner of a ceiling plinth without a miter box, then you can apply the following methods:

  • mark on the wall
  • draw a miter box

Marking on the wall

With the help of markings on the wall, you can get a good result.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Cut the skirting board at a 90 degree angle. Attach to the corner as it will adhere. Draw a line on the ceiling.

  1. We also mark the second fillet on the other side of the corner at the point of abutment to the corner.

  1. We have markings on the ceiling in the form of two crossed lines. Transfer the intersection point alternately to 2 ceiling plinths.

  1. Leaning against the corner, draw a line from the transferred point to the other edge of the plinth. The drawn line is the cutting line.

Apply to the corner of the room and adjust the angle of the plinth, cutting with a knife.

Draw a miter box

The miter box can be drawn on a piece of paper, board, or cardboard. To do this, you need to draw two parallel lines and set aside the required angles with the desired degree. Corners can be laid with a protractor.

To cut the plinth at an angle, we use a technique similar to cutting with the presence of a miter box. Namely, we set the plinth parallel to one of the lines and cut it off at an angle.

Very often people are faced with uneven walls in the apartment. If you cut off adjacent skirting boards at a 45-degree angle, the curvature of the walls will create a large gap.

How to make the corners of the skirting board when the corner of the room is not 90 degrees? In this case, the miter box is not useful, because you need to determine and change the degree of the cutting angle. That is why it is convenient to use the drawn miter box. How to properly cut a corner on a ceiling plinth - a video instruction is in this article.

  • Adjusting skirting boards to any angle
  • Installation of ceiling plinth

Every owner wants to see his house in perfect condition after renovation, but the seams in the corners ceiling covering can spoil the impression of the new interior. To prevent this from happening, ceiling plinths were invented.

When choosing a skirting board, you should pay attention to the material from which the skirting board is made, as well as the color and width.

Adjusting the skirting board is not very difficult, but, nevertheless, this process has its own difficulties. There are only two of them - this uneven walls and the joints of the corners. If the first one is overcome quite simply, then the second one often has to tinker with.

  1. Square.
  2. Stationery or construction knife.
  3. A hacksaw for wood or a jigsaw.
  4. Metal ruler.
  5. Miter box.
  6. Ceiling plinth.

Scheme of marking the left strip of the inner corner.

In order to properly fit the skirting boards, you will need whole line tools, most of which are in every home.

The process itself is not very laborious, but it requires the utmost precision of execution. The seam at the corner of the joint should not be just flat, but perfect. This is simply necessary so that it cannot be seen.

Often it is necessary to resort to a double joint of skirting boards at one corner, especially in cases with external ones, but if done correctly, this will play an extremely positive role, because the corner itself will visually round off. All work is divided into several stages.

Checking all ceiling corners for dust. Working surface must be dry and clean so that the skirting board is tight enough and then does not peel off until the owners themselves want to remove it.

Using a square, the angle is measured. And happiness if it is 45 degrees, tk. in this case, it will be possible to use a miter box (a tool that allows you to cut flat objects from plastic to metals at an angle of 45 degrees), if the angle is different, then you will have to navigate in place, but the joint should be made strictly along the bisector.

Styrofoam and light plastics are perfectly cut with a clerical or construction knife, while denser materials will have to be cut with a small hacksaw for wood or with a jigsaw with the smallest nozzle. To do this, the plinth is fixed in a miter box or any other improvised rack-clamp, and in the first case, a cut is made with one movement, and in the other, a careful cut is made.

Scheme for trimming ceiling plinths in a miter box for arranging external and internal corners.

After the completion of the previous stage, the plinth is applied to the corner again and based on the results obtained, the markings are made on the next one.

This will make the joint as tight as possible. If, after cutting from the second ceiling plinth, it turned out that it was not cut, then it will simply remain to trim both sides. But at outer corners, there are often situations when there is an extra cut and a gap is obtained.

To remedy the situation, cut off exactly as much from the first sample as needed to obtain an identical deviation from the corner. And a narrow strip is inserted between them, which at the same time will close the flaw and harmoniously round the corner of the ceiling plinth - this option is used by many on purpose, because in most cases, it comes in handy for the interior.

Back to the table of contents

Putty will help to close the joints between the skirting boards. The paint will be perfectly applied to it.

When everything is cut, you can start gluing. For some materials it is better to use glue, for others - silicone sealant, for work with the third, both are suitable. After gluing, the last fitting of the skirting boards takes place, where the fillets are correctly aligned and each corner falls into place.

The most the last step the work will be to putty the crevices of the corners, walls and ceilings that remain. For this, an acrylic putty is used, which is carefully applied around the entire perimeter of the ceiling plinth. When applying, it is important to take into account that accuracy is important here, and work done correctly without hitting the walls and ceiling in the end will be invaluable.

After the ceiling plinth is fully fitted, glued and greased, and the corners are seam to seam, it should be left unwavering for a while. In the very near future, it will dry up and take on the state to which they tried to adjust the whole process. During operation, you should try not to influence the plinth very often. wet cleaning since many species are very afraid of this, deform and lose their appearance.

Correctly forming the corners of the ceiling plinth is very important: this finishing element is always in sight.

Poor docking can ruin the impression of the renovation. But this is not a simple matter: cutting the plinth at 45 degrees, you will not get the desired result (there will be gaps). For your attention, expert advice on how to saw down the corner of the ceiling plinth.

Trimming should be carried out along the outer edge of the skirting board, as well as from the inner (when forming the outer corner) or front side(for internal docking).

If everything is done correctly, the texture of the cornice will not be disturbed. At home, styrofoam finishing materials are most often used. The technology for joining the elements is as follows.

  1. The angle between the walls is measured with a protractor. In the event that it is strictly equal to 90 °, the edges must be cut at 45 °. The action is performed on both elements.
  2. If the joints between the ceiling and walls are not even, the corner radius should be halved. In this case, the baguette, which will be attached on the left side, is cut off on the right, and the right element, respectively, on the left.
  3. The edges of the inner corner pieces are trimmed so that the top is shorter than the bottom. The edges of the outer corner are formed differently: the lower part is shorter than the upper one.
  4. Unlike Styrofoam skirting boards, wooden parts need to be precisely adjusted to each other and to adjacent surfaces, applying and cutting along the abutment line.

What tools can be used to cut corners

  1. It is convenient to cut corners using a miter box and an electric miter saw. Small amounts of work can be done hand hacksaw with fine teeth.
  2. If it is necessary to change the direction of cutting, a jigsaw is used.
  3. You can cut a narrow foam baseboard using a construction knife or a metal hacksaw.
  4. The markings on the plinth are applied with a simple pencil, the traces of which are erased after installation.

How to cut a plinth without a miter box

Let's say you urgently need to glue the ceiling plinth.

How to make a corner without a miter box? This is possible, although it will take more time. You should proceed in this order.

  1. Both skirting boards are cut at right angles at first.
  2. The position of the elements on the wall is marked and the line of their joining is drawn. As a result, we will see two intersecting lines. The point of their intersection is projected directly onto the skirting board details.
  3. The plinth is applied to the ceiling and a cutting line is drawn from one edge to the other.
  4. Refinement of parts is carried out with a clerical or construction knife.
  5. A virtual miter box is depicted on paper with lines drawn at the desired angles. The fillet of the plinth is applied to such a miter box and cutting is performed (while the knife blade should be held vertically).

How to cut the corner of a ceiling plinth: a video with expert comments will help you deal with this problem.

Advice! Since it does not always have perfect shape an internal or external corner, the ceiling plinth will have noticeable gaps at the joints.

To make them less noticeable, plaster putty should be applied to its ends before gluing the plinth. After joining the elements, the excess putty is removed rubber spatula... All gaps will be filled and the joint will be less visible.

Do not just glue and correctly dock fillets with the pattern. What should you do in this case? The video will tell you the answer.

Docking skirting boards using decorative corners

In the event that the walls are ideally prepared, and the external and internal corners are equal to 90 °, it is possible to use special decorative elements for joining plinth fillets. The advantages of this method:

  • ease of installation: there is no need to "fill your hand", improving the technique of trimming plinth parts;
  • saving time: to join the elements, you just need to cut them at right angles and attach the decorative part.

The decorative parts themselves for joining fillets are intended for:

  • for internal corner joints;
  • for external (external) corner joints;
  • for connecting straight parts.

This method of connection is the only option in the case of installing a plastic skirting board, which cannot be trimmed without gaps.

Covering the joints of ceiling plinths

No matter how carefully the work is done, the joints between the fillets of the plinth will be noticeable. This defect can be eliminated as follows.

  1. Glue is applied to the joints of the skirting board.
  2. After connecting the elements, remove excess glue with a clean cloth. Do this after the glue has completely dried.
  3. The gaps between the plinth, ceiling and wall are rubbed with a mixture gypsum plaster and water-based paint using a rubber spatula.

This method is suitable for masking defects when connecting wooden baseboards, as well as fillets made of polyurethane foam, polystyrene foam, polystyrene foam. In some cases, a white sealant can be used.

Using the tips outlined in the article and the necessary tools, you can cut and join the fillets of the ceiling plinth yourself.

Correct trimming of the ceiling plinth - how to do it?

Ceiling plinth - decorative border between the walls and the ceiling. But it is often used to mask the joints of the finishing material on the wall and on the ceiling, if it is not done neatly, or has a different structure.

Many people ask themselves the question: how to properly cut the ceiling plinth, because without it, the design of the room seems unfinished.

This element is simply glued - on special glue. But trimming the ceiling plinth in the corners to make them look presentable and tidy can confuse some. There are rooms with a complex layout, in which you need to equip not only internal corners, but also external ones.

This question can be answered exactly if you know what material this decor element is made of. There are four types of fillets:

  • polyvinyl chloride (PVC);
  • polyurethane;
  • expanded polystyrene (polystyrene);
  • wood.

The cheapest option is foam skirting boards. But this is a very delicate material, creases and dents can appear on it, even from the fingers, if you press it harder, so it is very difficult to carefully cut the corner of the ceiling plinth from this material.

In most cases, an inexperienced person throws away a lot of material for this reason.

They are electrostatic and attract a lot of dust. They are cut with an ordinary clerical knife. You can also cut it off with a fine-toothed hacksaw, but there is a chance of getting an uneven edge.

Polyvinyl chloride is one of the inexpensive materials, it is brittle and may crumble when cut. You can cut off the ceiling plinth from this material with a sharp construction knife, or a hacksaw for metal.
You need to try not to apply force when cutting, when pressing, you can get a chip.

The polyurethane skirting board is more expensive than the first two options, it is much denser and tougher, and it is difficult to cut it.

But there is a plus - when pressed, it does not crumble. Cut it better with a hacksaw for metal, but a sharp construction knife may work. The corner of the skirting board made of this material is smooth and neat.

This decor option is currently the most expensive. It is durable, moisture resistant, elastic.

But fillets have a big drawback - a reaction to temperature changes. For example, in the kitchen above the stove, it can crack and deform, and it is almost impossible to process it, all that remains is to replace it. But this is not a panacea, it will crack again.

Wooden plinth is a natural solid and rather heavy material, which cannot be attached to glue. Cut it off with a hacksaw with a small blade, preferably for metal. This will make the edge of the trimmed skirting appear smoother.

These are corner pieces that are commercially available.

Having bought fittings for corners, the skirting board itself can be cut to size, at an angle of 90 degrees. The corner element is glued to the corner, and the fillet itself is attached to it. So you can hide all the flaws.

But it is not always possible to use fittings - it is much larger in size than the fillet itself, and the corners in such an interior stand out strongly, and this is not always aesthetically pleasing.

If this is not a matter of principle, then of course it is better to buy a corner element and not bother with trimming corners.

We decided to cut the skirting boards themselves, then use some tips on how to do it correctly.

Docking technology:

  • Measure the degree between the walls using a protractor. 90 degrees, then cut under 45. If it is different, then we divide its value in half. Both elements are trimmed.
  • The skirting board, which will be fixed on the left side, is trimmed on the right, and the right molding on the left side, respectively.
  • The cuts of the inner corner parts along the edges should look like this, the top line is shorter than the bottom one. External - on the contrary, the lower line is shorter.
  • If the foam plinth in the corners can be corrected, then with wooden details this will not work and they will have to be adjusted very precisely, until they are completely abutted.

A carpenter's tool that allows you to cut workpieces at different angles - miter box. This is a tray in which there are slots made at a certain angle. The material from which it is made can be different, for example:

A simple design has two types of angles 45-90 degrees, a complex configuration 90-60-45 degrees. The second type of tool is considered professional.

Let's consider how to cut a ceiling plinth using a miter box:

  1. First you need to measure the required length of the plinth, for this we attach it to the ceiling.
  2. The measured bar must be inserted into the miter box at a certain slope in the same position as on the ceiling.
  3. We move the bar to the opposite wall of the apparatus.
  4. We press well with the left hand.
  5. The position of the hacksaw handle should be as close as possible to the left hand, and the angle will be 45 degrees.
  6. Saw the plinth carefully, without pressure.

One plank is ready, now you need to cut off the opposite plank:

  1. We put it against the wall of the miter box, but only on the opposite side.
  2. Hold right hand pressing against the wall.
  3. You will have to saw with your left hand, but the hacksaw should be in the same position, only in a mirror image.
  4. Cut off

Docking check - consists of one hundred need to attach the trimmed strips to each other at the corners. For precision, it is best to start trimming from the front of the skirting board. If we are talking about a tree, then the angle will have to be adjusted with a file.

Outside corner

  1. If the bar reaches both corners, then first we cut the inner corner, and then the outer one. It may turn out that after trimming the corner, the plank will not be enough.
  2. As in the first case, we apply it to the ceiling to mark the dimensions.
  3. The plank must be positioned so that it is pressed against the near wall.
  4. We hold it with our left hand and put the hacksaw in the 45 degree position - the handle is close to the left hand.
  5. Cut off.
  6. We set the second bar in the same way, but we only hold it with our right hand.
  7. The hacksaw becomes a mirror image to the first option for trimming the skirting board.
  8. We cut it off.

It is worth noting that the miter box will be useful to you only if all angles in your apartment are equal to 90 degrees. When the corners are not even, you will have to use other trimming methods.

As you can see, it is not difficult to cut off the ceiling plinth correctly with a miter box.

The markings on the ceiling will also help to cut the bar to the nearest millimeter. This is not easy to do, since when trimming, the plinth strip will have to be kept suspended. But, this is the most accurate way to adjust the angle on the skirting board.

By attaching the plinth to the ceiling, you can see all the irregularities on the wall. Angle deviation is also visible and must be taken into account when trimming.

In order to cut correctly you need to:

  1. Make a cut to the workpiece 90 degrees.
  2. Attach the workpiece to the ceiling and outline its contours. In this case, it is necessary that it fit snugly against the perpendicular wall.
  3. Then we do the same on the adjacent wall, outlining the outline of the workpiece along the ceiling.
  4. We put a point at the intersection of the lines, this will be the reference point by which the corner of the plinth will be trimmed.
  5. On each workpiece, alternately mark a cut point that coincides with a point on the ceiling.
  6. From a point to the opposite side, draw a line at an angle, along which it will be necessary to cut the plinth.

Once the markings have been completed, you can properly cut the skirting board and try it on. It is worth noting that this method involves trimming with inside blanks.

To trim the skirting board, you can make a miter box template yourself. It is made of cardboard, paper, or wood. The principle is this:

  • draw two parallel lines;
  • we define the center;
  • we apply the corners with a protractor.

Highly convenient device, as it allows not only to cut corners of 90 degrees, but also higher. But before doing it, check the corners on the ceiling, suddenly they are uneven, and then the workpiece imitation of the miter box will have to be adjusted. Since it will not be possible to cut the plinth exactly.

You can cut off the corner according to the drawn template in the same way as when using a real miter box. Only in this situation will we press the bar against the drawn, parallel lines.

There is a rule according to which you need to cut the ceiling plinth:

  • To mark the inner corner, measurements are taken from the corner.
  • For the outer corner, you need to know that the ceiling plinth will protrude into the room for a length equal to the width of the workpiece.

Do not glue the skirting board until both planks have been prepared and tried on. Once the planks in the corner have come together perfectly, you can spread them with glue and secure.

If there are flaws in polyurethane or wood baseboards, then they are processed with a small file. WITH plastic skirting boards you can get by with a sharp clerical or construction knife.

There is no need to despair if there is a gap in the corners after fitting, it can be masked with a white putty. To do this, even before fixing the second plinth, which will be joined in the corner, putty is applied to the joint.

After the corner is secured and pressed, the excess mixture must be removed and the corner wiped with a damp cloth. If necessary, you can paint the joint with water-based paint for ceilings.

How to mask joints

With any neat work, there are flaws, and installing a ceiling plinth is no exception, especially if you are doing it for the first time and have no idea how to neatly cut ceiling plinths. Flaws and defects can be removed like this:

  • The glue is applied to the joints, with which the skirting boards are attached.
  • As soon as the glue dries at the joints, it is enough to wipe it off with a clean cloth.
  • As for the gaps in the ceiling area, they are clogged with putty and painted over with paint. This should be done carefully with a rubber spatula.
  • If there is a house white sealant, then you can use it to seal the cracks, then you don't have to paint the joints.

In custody

As you can see, the lesson on trimming the corners of the ceiling plinth is not difficult, and anyone can master it.

Do not start right away by cutting corners on a whole plank; practice on small elements. And as soon as you start to work out, move on to a solid baseboard. We hope you learned from this article how to properly trim the ceiling plinth in the corners.

The ceiling plinth performs not only a decorative function, visually separating the walls from the ceiling, but can also hide the joints of various finishing materials ceiling and walls. Not every interior design involves the use of a skirting board, but more often than not, the overall appearance of the room seems incomplete without it. There is nothing difficult in fixing this element - fillets - almost all types of skirting boards are attached with glue. But the question of how to properly cut the ceiling plinth in the corners of the premises can confuse many. Indeed, even in the simplest room there are internal corners, where the plinths of the ceiling plinth must be precisely and beautifully docked. And in a more complex configuration of the room, you will also have to dock the skirting boards, performing the outer corner. In this article we will look at various options how to cut a ceiling plinth with and without tools at hand.

First you need to figure out how to cut the ceiling plinth, the answer to it depends on the material from which the fillet is made. At the moment, we sell ceiling plinths made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), expanded polystyrene (polystyrene), polyurethane and wood.

PVC ceiling skirting boards are the cheapest. Dents and creases are easily formed on them, which cannot be repaired, so the product must be thrown away. Also their disadvantage is electrostaticity - the ability to attract dust. You can cut them with a sharp construction knife or a hacksaw.

Styrofoam ceiling skirting boards are also cheap. This material very fragile, easily crumbles during processing, therefore, it is necessary to cut the expanded polystyrene with a sharp knife or a hacksaw on metal, without making too strong pressing forces.

Extruded Styrofoam ceiling skirting boards slightly more expensive than expanded polystyrene, denser and more difficult to cut. However, they crumble less, making them easier and more comfortable to work with. They are cut with a construction knife and a hacksaw for metal.

Polyurethane ceiling skirting boards are the most expensive at the moment. They are durable, elastic and moisture resistant, can be easily cut with a construction knife and do not crumble. The disadvantage of polyurethane skirting boards is their dependence on temperature changes. For example, over a gas stove, a polyurethane skirting board will permanently deform and crackle slightly. If you try to process or cut such a skirting board, it may bend or deform in other ways.

Wooden ceiling plinths are dense, heavy products that can only be cut with a hacksaw, preferably with small, frequent teeth. You can also use a cloth for metal.

Before proceeding to the enumeration of the methods of how to properly cut the ceiling plinth, I would like to note that there is a possibility not to cut the plinth with great precision. Available for sale special corner pieces into which the edges of the skirting board are inserted. In this case, it is enough to cut the plinth strip at an angle of 90 °, and the corner element will hide all the flaws. But this method is not always used, since the dimensions of the corner elements are slightly larger than the skirting boards themselves, so the corners in the room will stand out against the general background. Sometimes it can look bulky. Nevertheless, if the design of the room allows the use of corner pieces for ceiling skirting boards, it makes sense to use them. Further instructions will come in handy for those who nevertheless decided to accurately cut the skirting boards at a given angle.

The miter box is a simple carpentry tool that allows you to cut the workpiece at the desired angle. Most often it is a plastic, wood or metal tray with vertical slots for cutting at an angle of 90 ° and 45 °. There are also more complex structures miter boxes - for cutting at angles of 90, 60 and 45 degrees. For more professional work used miter box with swivel mechanism where the hacksaw can be fixed at any angle to the workpiece.

How to cut a skirting board with a miter box - inner corner:

  • We apply the plinth to the ceiling, measure the required length.
  • Then we install the plinth strip in the miter box so that the position coincides with the position of the plinth on the ceiling.
  • The plinth strip must be pressed against the far wall of the miter box.
  • We hold the plinth with our left hand.
  • We choose such a position of the hacksaw when the angle is 45 degrees and the handle of the hacksaw is as close as possible to the left hand.
  • We cut the workpiece without making excessive pressure on the saw.
  • The next step is to trim the plinth striker. We also install it to the far wall of the miter box.
  • Press and hold with your right hand.
  • We choose such a position for the hacksaw when the angle is 45 degrees and the handle of the hacksaw approaches the right hand.
  • Cut off the skirting board.

Next, we join the trimmed plinths and check the cutting accuracy. For a more accurate orientation, they also say that in order to complete the inner corner, it is necessary to start cutting from the front of the plinth. Wooden skirting boards will most likely have to be filed after trimming.

How to cut a ceiling plinth with a miter box - outside corner:

  • In order not to be mistaken with the dimensions, it is better to start by marking the inner corner, and then cut out the outer corner. Otherwise, a situation is possible when the planks may not be enough in length.
  • It is necessary to attach the plank to the ceiling and outline the dimensions.
  • Install the plinth strip and press it against the nearest wall.
  • We hold it with the left hand and choose a position for the hacksaw at an angle of 45 degrees, when the handle approaches the left hand.
  • We cut off the workpiece.
  • We install the striker to the nearest wall, hold it with the right hand.
  • We set the hacksaw at a 45 degree angle when the handle comes close to the right hand.
  • Cut off the workpiece and join the corner.

Trimming the workpiece with a miter box is only suitable if the angle between the walls is even - 90 degrees. If the accuracy is poor, you will have to use other methods.

How to trim the corner of a ceiling plinth using ceiling markings

Marking the skirting board on the ceiling also allows you to cut the corner evenly and accurately. The only drawback this method is that it is difficult and inconvenient to keep the plinth plinth suspended during the cutting process. Otherwise, you can mark the cutting angle in this way even more accurately than in other ways. Applying the plinth to the installation site, all wall flaws and deviations in the angle size are immediately taken into account.

Cutting the corner of the skirting board:

  • The first step is to cut two workpieces at an angle of 90 degrees.

  • Then we first apply one plank, resting its end against the perpendicular wall. We draw a line on the ceiling, outlining the contour of the plinth.

  • We remove this bar and apply a striker, also resting its butt against the wall. We outline the line.

  • The point of intersection of the marked lines will be the mark at which the skirting board needs to be cut.
  • Again, we apply each bar in turn and mark the cutting point on them.
  • Draw a line from this point to the other edge of the plinth.

We cut off the skirting boards along the outlined lines, join them and apply them to the installation site. Please note that this method is easier to cut inside corners.

Something resembling a miter box can be done by applying the required cut angles to paper, cardboard or wood. You need to draw two parallel lines, determine the center, and then set aside the necessary corners using a protractor. The advantage of this method is that you can postpone any angle, including more than 90 degrees. Of course, before cutting the corners of the ceiling plinth, you must first check the angle between the walls using a corner and measure it with a protractor.

The technique for cutting a ceiling plinth using a painted miter box is exactly the same as using the miter box itself. We press the plinth plank to one of the parallel lines, then set the hacksaw at the desired angle, which is already outlined, and cut it off.

DIY impromptu miter box

Making a miter box with your own hands is also not difficult.

Method 1. You will need three wooden planks or boards, which must be put together in a U-shaped box. Then the necessary angles are marked on the walls of the box, and a cut is made with a hacksaw. As a result, you should get a wooden miter box, in which grooves are cut.

Method 2. A combination of an impromptu miter box and a template with marked lines. For the convenience of cutting, it is necessary to build something in which it will be convenient to hold the plinth strip, since it is difficult to keep it suspended. It is enough to put together a corner from two wooden planks or boards. On paper, you need to draw lines with angles for cutting at 45 degrees or at any other. Then we apply the skirting board blank to the corner, press it by hand, as described in the technology for using the miter box, move the piece of paper with the template under the edge where we are going to cut it, and cut it off. In the process of cutting, we focus on the line drawn on the paper.

Method 3. As an impromptu miter box, you can use anything you want, everything - that we form a corner. For example, a table pushed against a wall.

Important! Pay attention to the rule of making measurements for trimming the ceiling plinth. To mark the inner corner, you need to measure the length directly from the corner itself. To outline the outer corner, it is necessary to be guided by the fact that the plinth will protrude deep into the room by a distance equal to its width.

It is not necessary to fix the plinths of the ceiling plinths before cutting off the striker and trying on their location. Only after the two strikers are perfectly aligned in the corner, you can start attaching them to the ceiling. Small flaws can be modified with a file or a nail file in the case of wooden and polyurethane skirting boards... To fit foam products, you will have to wield a sharp knife.

If suddenly, even after adjusting the skirting boards, a small gap remains between them, do not despair, it can be repaired with a putty. Cutting the ceiling plinth yourself is not difficult. But in order not to spoil many products, it is better to pre-train on small blanks.
