Decorative beams in a wooden house. The use of decorative beams on the ceiling in interior decoration

October 22, 2016
Specialization: master for interior and exterior decoration (plaster, putty, tile, drywall, lining, laminate and so on). In addition, plumbing, heating, electrical, conventional cladding and balcony extensions. That is, repairs in an apartment or house were done on a turnkey basis with all necessary types works.

Decorative ceiling beams made of wood are inherently fake, as they do not carry any load on themselves. These interior details are held at the expense of the consoles. They look very impressive and beautifully decorate the room, adding retro notes to the interior.

Today I will tell you how you can make and install them yourself, and also present to your attention the video in this article for a complete understanding of the process.

Making false beams

Advantages

Design features and benefits are as follows:

  • first of all, wooden beams on the ceiling in the interior create a unique color and coziness, and it is definitely pleasant to be in such a room;
  • they can be made for every taste, painted in any color and of any size;
  • very important advantage is that they are hollow, therefore, represent perfect place for laying various communications - wires, cables, pipes and so on;

  • such products are also made of polyurethane wood imitation - they are lighter and more durable. However, you are unlikely to be able to make such a profile on your own, since molds for ebb tide are needed here..

Material selection

No matter how carefully you assemble such a structure, it is important to choose the right material:

  • to assemble fake wood ceiling beams yourself, any type of wood will do. Only, of course, it is necessary that all the elements are of the same breed, otherwise the texture will be different, and this does not always look good;
  • the boards must be dry - if they turn out to be wet, then after a while after drying, the joining seam will become noticeable. As you know, the room is always warm, and the air rises upward, so this process will only contribute to deformation;
  • it is desirable that the board be edged, of the same width and thickness, so that it is easier to make a fit.

Note. When choosing a material, you should also pay attention to the deformation of the board. If it is strongly led, then it will not work to tighten the two elements tightly, especially since there is no way to use the clamp here. Therefore, the instruction does not recommend the use of deformed wood.

Assembly

To make decorative wooden beams with your own hands, you cannot do with an ordinary hacksaw - you need a plunge-cut circular saw (hand circular). Its clamping bar can rotate, that is, it can be set at any angle.

Although in this case it would be best to set 45⁰. You will also need at least the simplest workbench where you can cut and assemble, and a couple of clamps to hold the board in place while cutting to get it as accurate as possible.

So, fix the board to the workbench, set the saw blade clamp at a 45⁰ angle, and trim the longitudinal edges at that angle. Even if the disc is new, that is, sharp, it will still leave roughness that will interfere with a tight fit, so I recommend going through the sections with coarse sandpaper.

When all three boards are ready (the lower one with two cuts, and the side ones with one), you should prepare glue (you can use PVA or any other for wood) and bars for tightening the two elements.

In order for the self-tapping screw to attract the board well, drill holes in the block for the screws to free play. Try to keep the intersections no closer than 50 mm to each other, otherwise the bar may split..

The distance between the screws should be no more than 15-20 cm - such a frequency will ensure a tight fit, therefore, the joint will not be noticeable. Now glue the sections of the boards to be joined with glue, attach them to each other, insert a block into the corner and tighten the elements with self-tapping screws. Do this not in a row, but best of all from the middle to the edges to avoid deformation.

But in order to make a wooden ceiling with beams with your own hands, you will have to make consoles for them, on which they will lean. You can choose any shape of the consoles, or just the one for which you have the skill of a carpenter.

The most popular options are shown in the top photo - you can use them, the main thing is that the width of the console coincides with the beam - it is much more beautiful this way.

Appearance

Finishing the finished profile depends on what kind of ceiling you have in the house on wooden beams, and the rest of the interior should also be taken into account. But the best way to give a cozy look is by brushing the wood.

This is an artificial aging of wood, when the top layer is removed with a metal brush and the structure of the wood appears with particular brightness. But not all wood species lend themselves well to such processing - it is best to brush Siberian larch or pine, but on alder, the surface turns out to be poorly sanded.

This type of processing can be done a little differently, for example, with an ax - tilt the ax at an angle of 20-25⁰ and make random chips in the corners and along the plane. The tool must be well sharpened, that is, sharp.

The aging effect can also be achieved by firing wood - for this you need a blowtorch or a gas nozzle. The firing should be uneven and the texture will show up with varying degrees of brightness.

There are also special paints for artificial aging that clearly highlight the growth rings and create a cozy effect. It is quite possible to use them.

In most cases, making decorative wood beams implies that they will represent a solid wood, so the structure of the wood must be preserved. As a rule, finished profiles are stained and varnished. The stain makes them much darker, and the varnish protects against various insects, fungal mildew and moisture.

Decorative beams don't always have to be rustic. For example, if you have walls white, white plastic windows and doors are installed, then the profile should be in harmony with such an interior.

In such cases, the boards are sanded with a grinder and painted white, as in the photo above. The feel of wood remains, but the design is much more modern.

Installation work

We will now create such a structure, where we will not use consoles - the fastening will be done on bars. It makes no sense to install consoles here - the presence of vertical beams cancels them. As you can see, the beams here have a different section, which gives special charm interior - it turns out that one seems to come out of the other.

I want to note right away, so as not to return to this topic later, that cuts are made at the intersections with vertical or horizontal beams. Only they need to be done with maximum accuracy in order to avoid gaps.

You can start from the angle at which the L-shaped profile is mounted and for this, the bars are first attached - their section is not important, but it is much more convenient to use a 30 × 40 mm rail. One block is screwed onto the wall with self-tapping screws, and the other - onto the ceiling.

On the ceiling, where the U-shaped profile is attached, the fixing system remains the same - you screw two to the ceiling. Just try so that you set them as accurately as possible along the inner width of the beam, and it fits tightly.

After installing the bars, a beam is put on them and attached finishing nails or self-tapping screws with anti-corrosion coating. This is very convenient, since it is always possible to replace the ceiling beam in wooden house if necessary.

The final touch is the decoration of the joints - for this you can use special belts that imitate forging. The belt itself sits on the glue (you can "Moment"), and along the edges, so that there is no lag while the glue dries, it is fixed with a stapler.

Conclusion

If you, dear readers, have any questions or suggestions for creating beams on the ceiling, write about it in the comments, I will be happy to talk about this topic. In addition, your opinion is important and interesting to me!

Due to the low ceiling heights, a beamed design is difficult to imagine in a typical city apartment. It is created in a spacious country house, where the beams in the interior look more appropriate. However, it all depends on the imagination of the designer and the area of the living space. Since even a large modern apartment can be decorated with this decorative element. Decorative beams are easy to fit into any style. They are used to delimit space, place designer lamps, visual expansion area. Multifunctional products create a unique atmosphere in the room. Therefore, further we will consider in detail the characteristics of this ultra-fashionable technique in the layout of the house and the advantages of its use.

Benefits of interior design with beams

  1. Creation of a certain atmosphere in the house. These hanging products give a sense of security and peace, as they are associated with the powerful structures of a wooden house;
  2. Visual change in the space of the room. Despite the decrease in volume, it visually expands. Designers are happy to use this optical technique;
  1. Decorative elements are becoming the main focus in interior decoration. Beams on the ceiling attract increased attention and, if properly designed, can become the center of an art composition;
  2. Home improvement with beams can be done with your own hands.

Application of ceiling structures

Their presence in private houses is implied a priori, since structures are an integral element of the ceiling. In this case, the owner can leave the floor in its natural form, or can hide it with a plasterboard partition. It all depends on the chosen style of the room. Appropriate use of ceiling structures can make individual design project, where strict style will be combined with the practical goals of zoning the premises.

So, beams can easily hide possible layout flaws. For example, uneven joints when finishing with plasterboard. Also, in the ceiling structures, it is possible to provide for the placement of utilities (in order to build in decorative lighting, electrical wiring is carried out in the beams).

Beams can be used as a base for attaching other design elements, be they decorative lamps or even modern plasma. Hanging dried herbs on ceilings is considered a recognized decor. Especially if they are located in the kitchen. Hooks can also be provided there for positioning kitchen tools or glassware.

Interior zoning

A functional design solution implies competent zoning of the space in the room. Let's try to name the goals that can be achieved in this way:

  • Simple zoning is accomplished by placing one imposing beam between two production areas in the room;
  • Extension of the room visually becomes possible by placing the beam parallel to the wide wall;
  • Expansion of space is visually achieved by arranging decorative items along the width of the entire ceiling;
  • The reduction of the ceiling occurs when the products are fixed on the opposing walls;
  • An increase in the volume of living space occurs by simply placing a beam under the ceiling itself;
  • The volume of the ceiling will give a textured color to match the ceiling;
  • The original interior design can be organized thanks to the decoration of the pitched ceiling or the attic with decorative beams;
  • The use of lacquered products in pastel color with a smooth surface will help in the design of a classic design style;
  • A slightly different type of color forms an already modernist design style. You will need products in contrasting black and white tones;
  • For the design of styles such as Provence, country or shabby chic, a light texture of the material is used. This decor is most popular in the bedroom.

Materials (edit)

Various materials are used for the production of ceiling products. Having a choice allows you to decorate a room or hall in a conceptual style, be it ethno or gothic. It all depends on the taste preferences of the owners and the amount of funds. There are also versatile materials to create any decor. A big plus is that you can install them yourself. Below we will present each of them in detail.

  1. Wood. It is a timeless classic and the most sought-after material on the ceiling construction market. The huge number of its benefits is not counted only by beauty or environmental friendliness. Natural, safe and extremely easy to install material is extremely popular for kitchens. Usually conifers are taken for manufacturing, but deciduous ones also come across.

They will need to be additionally treated with an antiseptic.

The only drawback of wood can be considered the cost of products, since quality comes first. Wealthy owners love to order ceiling structures from exotic breeds trees (for example, merabu or meranti). Then there is processing (tinting, spraying) and installation by means of self-tapping screws. Variants with hollow beams are also available, which can be secured with an adhesive binder.

  1. Metal. For decorative purposes, a light metal, such as aluminum, is used. Its popularity is due to modern demands for new finishing materials, as well as its relevance in some design styles. Hi-tech or industrial styles the interior is not complete without these decorative beams. Additionally, the structures are decorated with ultra-fashionable lamps that favorably emphasize the functional areas of the room.

The bedroom is the best option for arranging such a decor.

  1. Polyurethane. It also belongs to modern finishing materials, because, with proper processing, it perfectly imitates the texture of any natural elements. It is lightweight and relatively inexpensive when compared to previous textures. The convenience of using such material lies in the unlimited choice of any design - artificial beams of all variations and colors will reliably convey the structure of the desired coating. Products made from it are moisture-resistant and durable, plus they can be easily installed with their own hands.
  1. Fiberglass. It is the best option when an impressive profile is required. He is able to hide the conducted communications, leaving the connecting seams invisible. This is achieved by means of special bandage kits. The beams are then hung on belts or mounted with self-tapping screws.

How to choose the right option

All factors should be taken into account when choosing ceiling structures. Before purchasing, be sure to pay attention to the parameters of the premises itself. The determining factor is the height of the ceiling. If it is low in the house, then it is better to completely forget about decorative ceiling products. The same goes for narrow, small spaces. Beams will only enhance the claustrophobic effect in humans.

It is also necessary to check the compatibility of the chosen style with the ceiling structures. Flamboyant baroque will hardly go well with these massive pieces. Brutal flooring is also not suitable for Rococo, where pretentious furnishings require completely different types of finishes. Beams tend more towards austere, stylish, even masculine interiors. Where naturalness and the natural shade of the material are valued above all, and pomp is absolutely useless.

Much will depend on the budget set aside to create the required design. Based on the amount of funds, optimal material... For example, with limited resources, it is recommended to stop at artificial polyurethane beams. If the ceiling is high, no one will notice the replacement of the natural analogue with a false beam.

Design nuances

  1. If the interior country house mainly wooden, then it is advisable to order beam structures from wood. A living room with a similar design will create the necessary atmosphere of comfort and warmth, in which it will be pleasant to gather with friends. Wood can also be used to decorate the interior of the kitchen;
  2. When it comes to comparatively small apartment, it is recommended to select clarified beams with whitewash. In this way, the oppressive impression that dark products could produce will be avoided. At the same time, the space will become brighter, more joyful;
  3. Rustic elements will look very original if combined with the chosen style. Untreated wood blends well with nautical and Greek interior design;
  4. The option with the use of already familiar material for the manufacture of beams seems to be a win-win. For example, the one from which the furniture set is made;
  5. The decoration of the bedrooms in the attic looks quite pretentious. In this case, it will even be justified uneven surface ceiling;
  6. The most universal is the snow-white version of the beam structures. Since it can be painted, it suits any decor color, it is appropriate in a modern interior;
  7. There are examples of how the bathroom was decorated with ceiling structures. City escapades are not suitable for such escapades, but a bathroom in a country house encourages experiments in every possible way. In this case, remember about moisture-resistant impregnation so that the wood does not rot. ahead of time... Recently, for such purposes, a material is used - polyurethane.

Design style

Decorative ceiling beams in the interior can be decorated with taste, the main thing is to decide on suitable style... The types of styles for the most harmonious use of hanging products are distinguished:

Classic style

One of the most optimal options for these purposes. Designers love to emphasize rich interiors with decorative beams on the ceiling. This favorably sets off the luxurious furniture and natural wood flooring.

The dark color of the wooden beams harmonizes best with the light ceiling.

When the budget is limited, it is worth turning to polyurethane, which perfectly imitates a textured surface. Exquisite carving can say a lot about the status of the owners.

Modern

More a budget option, since it allows the free use of artificial products. Ceiling beams in the interior are made in such a bright color that natural wood does not have. Then zonal lighting is installed to delimit the functional areas. Their number is at the mercy of the owners.

Victorian style

The luxurious interior of this style is favorably emphasized by noble species of trees (red), which are additionally processed semi-antique.

Provence

The French style blends perfectly with the whitewashed decorative beams. According to the budget, natural wood or false beams are used. The latter are easy to install with your own hands, since no special skills are required for installation.

Modern

High-tech and loft are now at their peak of popularity. To create a similar style, polyurethane or aluminum beams are used. Coexist harmoniously with metal suspended structures brickwork in the interior and the lightened ceiling.

Country

Rough, brutal style implies exclusively natural wood, the installation of which is not easy to cope with. You will need the help of a friend.

Conclusion

Ceiling beams can and should be used when arranging a spacious home. This unique design element can become the main highlight in the interior and emphasize the respectability of the owners of the house. The above recommendations are enough to try to fulfill assembly work on one's own.

A ceiling beam can be more than just a decoration. Its use has a number of advantages that will serve as a bonus to the original interior:

  • If you decide to put plasterboard ceiling, the beam will help hide the joints between the sheets. This will have a positive effect on the overall appearance of the coating.
  • Hollow beams allow you to hide wiring, pipes and other communications in them.
  • If you wish, you can use them to install additional lighting - for example, mount it directly into the yoke or turn it into a kind of frame for LED strips.
  • The use of ceilings as an element of the interior allows you to emphasize the style of the room;
  • To beams from durable materials(stone, wood, metal) can be attached suspended structures- lamps, decorations and even televisions.

Of course, one should not forget about the main function - the carrier, especially in private houses. However, in modern design, beams are increasingly used as a stylistic device. We suggest that you familiarize yourself with our photo selection in order to understand how the implementation of such an idea might look like.

Examples of using beams in the interior

There are many design ideas for transforming a beam from a structural element into a beautiful decoration.

Straight wooden beams contrasting in color with the ceiling look very nice in classic interior... They add monumentality to it, at the same time making the room wider.

The ceiling looks three-dimensional and embossed, and additional spotlights help enhance the effect.

Rough beams made of natural wood can be emphasized by imitation of stone on the wall - so the room will look fresh and unusual.

However, try to avoid dark overlapping tones - they can appear rude.

Thinner perpendicular bars in contrasting colors highlight the carrier beam. Light it up with spotlights for more effect.

This technique is good for both large and small rooms - it visually adds space and looks good. It is best to use it between the kitchen and the open balcony - this way you can effectively zone the premises.

By the way, it is not necessary to stick exclusively to straight lines. If the beam is used as a decorative element, and not as a supporting structure, it may well be curly.

This solution will hide the wires and just look nice. The main thing is to carefully think over the pattern so that it is in harmony with the style of the rest of the room.

As an example, we chose multidirectional beams radiating from a horseshoe framing a lamp - a simple but effective technique that allows you to visually expand a room.

Suitable for high-tech interiors metal beams... They look unusual, and you can choose almost any shape. Such an airy embossed beam, as in the photo, is more suitable for spacious rooms - it hides a lot of the height of the room.

Nice bonus: Metal is one of the strongest materials. Therefore, you can use the structure to hang chandeliers and decor items.

However, in a classic interior, metal beams can look beautiful and appropriate - the main thing is to choose laconic straight lines and a restrained shade.

In this case, it is better to choose a wooden ceiling - the contrast of the two materials looks very impressive and stylish.

It is better not to try to experiment with color - not every paint will fit well on metal, and it is quite difficult to find a successful solution.

Open ceiling beams are more suitable for living rooms and halls of a two-story house - that is, rooms where their use is high enough.

Volumetric curly elements look stylish and add warmth and comfort to the room. Use them as a frame for small bulbs - the effect will be simply magical.

If you wish, you can lower a column of the same material from the ceiling - a simple yet elegant technique.

Openwork beams for concave stretch ceilings will be appropriate both in a private house and in an apartment with high walls. They look very unusual and original, while visually adding space and airiness to the room.

It is better to use contrasting tones of the same scale - warm or cold, so as not to create visual contradictions between them.

Spotlights scattered across the girder will enhance this effect. This method is good for large rooms in classic style... However, by experimenting with colors, you can find a solution for more modern types of design.

You don't have to limit yourself to standard woody shades or boring black and white. You can easily paint the beams in any color you like - or even several! However, in this case, you must follow a couple of rules:

  • Make sure that the selected palette is combined with each other.
  • Remember that no more than three to four basic tones should be used in a harmonious interior. Otherwise, the design will turn out to be too colorful and tiring for the eyes.

Otherwise, it all depends on your imagination!

In a private house, it is possible to construct from wooden beams ... the entire ceiling. The volumetric relief space, illuminated from the inside, is a rather unusual design technique. However, remember that the height of the walls must be appropriate.

As you can see, the use of beams in the modern construction world is not only a necessity, but also an elegant design technique that allows you to complement the atmosphere of almost any room.

The beams on the ceiling are a stylish yet cozy decor element. They will bring to the interior an atmosphere of rustic warmth that is so lacking. Nevertheless, the chosen material will support the stylistic idea and can correspond to both modern and classical trends.

Features of the design of low and high ceilings

  • In the interior with low ceilings ceiling beams of a simple design will look harmonious, for example, along or across a room.
  • In a compact room, it is better to replace the timber with a board or plastic. They will save space.
  • To prevent the ceiling from looking low, it is better to use a light palette.
  • In a room with high ceilings, complex designs and dark-colored finishes will look appropriate.

Types and materials of ceiling beams

Carriers

Concrete slabs

Most often used in the construction of urban multi-storey buildings and industrial premises... Ceiling concrete beam will look harmoniously in an interior with a modern style, such as loft, grunge, minimalism.

They are rarely used in the construction of urban housing, more often in cottages, summer cottages or for individual repairs. Solid or glued beams have square shape... It is most often used as a ceiling slab.

The log is round. The material is more expensive than timber, but it looks better in the interior from an aesthetic point of view.

Metal floor

Metal is stronger and has a longer service life. In the interior of the house, they can be decorated or hidden; when open, they will look harmoniously in an urban industrial style.

In the photo there is a spacious attic room in high-tech style, the ceiling beams are made of metal.

Imitation

Beams serving as decor for the interior should support the overall style.

Wood

Wooden ceiling beams add rustic coziness to the interior. Ceiling beams from a bar look luxurious and massive, it is better to use them in a spacious room, since they are quite voluminous and large structures will take up a lot of space.

For finishing standard city apartments or small rooms, it is better to choose boards, they are more compact. Also, the board can be part of the structure, where a solid bar is used as a basis.

Plastic

Polyurethane or plastic false ceiling beams can be analogous to wood. The material is not environmentally friendly, but it wins in price and variety. Visually, such ceiling beams will not differ much from natural wood.

Drywall

Decorating the ceiling with plasterboard panels, you can hide communications, while emphasizing the desired style in the interior. In addition, it is possible to install lamps in the plasterboard ceiling beams.

In the photo, the ceiling beams are constructed of plasterboard, decorated with plaster for concrete.

Ceiling finishing material

Tension cloth

Stretch ceiling is one of the most common finishing options. The popularity is due to the ease of installation, great variety and relatively low cost. Tension cloth heats up to 60 degrees and is fixed on each side of the room. The material can have a glossy and matte surface, which allows you to choose the best option for style in the interior.

Lining

Wooden lining will look harmonious in a room with high ceilings. In a city apartment, the lining can be painted in a light shade, thus, it will visually conceal a minimum of space.

Suspension

A plasterboard ceiling can have a flat or tiered surface. The ceiling will be decorated with beams, stucco moldings or built-in lighting, depending on stylistic preferences. The construction is made from metal frame and drywall sheets attached to it.

Painting

Requires a perfectly flat surface. This finish is easy to apply and comes in a wide variety of colors. The ceiling will be decorated with plinths, stucco moldings or beams.

The photo shows a stylish minimalistic bedroom in an eco-style.

Wallpaper

A prepared surface is also required for wallpapering. An interesting option would be finishing with photo wallpaper.

Location options

Across

The transverse arrangement of the ceiling beams will visually bring the room closer to the shape of a square, expanding the walls. In a spacious room, you can use a full-fledged timber, complementing the picture with low chandeliers or spotlights. A compact room will have enough planks to support the interior in the desired style.

Along

Longitudinal arrangement ceiling beams will make the room longer. By decorating the LED flight panel, you can get the effect of floating in the air.

Half ceiling

Ceiling decoration will partially visually divide the room into two zones, while maintaining the area. For example, in the kitchen, this way you can separate the cooking area from the dining area.

Laying cross to cross

Such an arrangement of the ceiling beams will make the space volumetric. To emphasize the relief and unusual way location, the color of the beams can be made in contrast to the main color.

Dividing a room into zones

A great way to zoning space. A ceiling structure will indicate the desired area or divide the room into two areas. For example, in a studio apartment, beams can be located in the cooking area, thereby separating the rest of the space, or in the bedroom, a complex structure will decorate sleeping place, denoting a sleeping area.

Roof structures

An interesting interior solution would be to erect a structure on the ceiling according to the principle of a roof structure, for example, a "rack" or "truss". It is these structures that are located under the roof of the building, holding it. Such structures are suitable for interior decoration with high sloping ceilings.

In the photo there is a bright kitchen-living room, the ceiling beams are made according to the principle of a roof structure.

Unusual styling

Location methods can be completely different from beautiful patterns that make up any drawing to complex geometric shapes. Complex ceiling structures will look harmonious in a room with high ceilings.

Decor methods

Aging

The aging effect is characteristic of many styles, such as Provence, shabby chic, rustic. In the interior, such items look rustic, cozy and warm.

Painting

You can highlight the ceiling beams by painting them in a color contrasting with the ceiling, for example, red beams on a light background. In this way, you can beat any theme or add some bright details to the interior.

Varnishing

Lacquered wood ceiling beams maintain the wood's unique pattern. Coating with varnish will brighten the material and protect it from harmful effects. A similar finish is suitable for a country-style interior, loft, chalet.

Patterns, carving

Painted patterns or wood carvings will look not only luxurious, but unique. Patterns and openwork carving will perfectly match the Russian style. A more restrained type of carving is suitable for decorating a classic interior.

Color selection

White

White ceiling beams on a light background will look very delicate. The ceilings do not seem low and the design will have its own "zest". White beams look interesting against the background of the ceiling in pastel shades.

In the photo, the bleached boards on the ceiling look very delicate, they harmoniously fit into the interior of the bedroom with a pastel color palette.

Beige

Beige ceiling beams look harmonious both on a flat ceiling and on a slatted ceiling. A light shade, close to the color of natural wood, will decorate the interior of a house or bath in any style.

Black

Contrasting black ceiling beams will successfully complement the room in modern style overlapping with other furnishings or pieces of furniture.

Photo in the interior of the apartment

Kitchen

The location, color and material of the ceiling beams depend on the size and stylistic direction of the kitchen. In a compact room, minimalistic straight beams on a glossy surface will harmoniously look. Another way to save space is with light-colored ceiling beams. In a spacious kitchen, the location will completely depend on the layout of the room or the style in the interior.

The photo shows the interior of the kitchen with a black suite. Partial ceiling beams separate the cooking area.

Living room

The ceiling in the hall will be decorated with beams against the background of a flat surface. Depending on the area of the room, the crossbeams can have a light palette, identical or similar to the main color. ceiling decoration... Or contrast against the general background, thereby playing the role of the main object in the room.

Bedroom

Wooden beams will make your bedroom more comfortable. The design can be around the entire perimeter of the ceiling or only above the bed, denoting the sleeping area. The color of the finish depends on the style of the room.

In the photo is a delicate bedroom in pastel colors... On the ceiling there is a structure made of plasterboard and decorative beams.

Children

In the children's room, ceiling beams will support themed decoration, for example, marine or eco style. The rungs can become part of the image of the room.

Hallway and corridor

If the hallway or corridor room is small and lacks natural light, then the best solution would be a modest ceiling structure in the form of several bars along or across the room.

Bathroom

When decorating a bathroom, it is worth considering the ever-changing humidity. The optimal solution there will be use of plastic or polyurethane ceiling false panels, which can also imitate the desired material.

Photo in the interior of the house

With a sufficient area of a private house, there are more opportunities for the embodiment of ideas. In houses from a log house with load-bearing log or cobbled beams, there is no need to camouflage them, finishing in the form of grinding or painting will be enough.

Pictured is a chalet-style country house. Decorating and filling are made of natural materials.

Cottage interior or country house with a high sloping ceiling, it will be decorated with a three-dimensional structure made of wooden beams, repeating the roof structure.

V country houses and baths, natural wood trim will look the most harmonious, emphasizing the closeness of nature.

Having trimmed the attic with beams, you can create your own secluded corner, from which you get a cozy bedroom or a place to relax.

The bathhouse will also radiate the warmth and comfort of a real Russian bath, it is enough to sand the supporting or decorative beams and cover with special paint or varnish.

Suitable styles

Loft

The loft style is characterized by minimal or complete absence decorative finishing... If there are metal, concrete or wooden ceiling beams in the room, they must be left behind. In their absence, false beams will help, which can also correct the space.

Provence

The Provence style interior is made in light pastel colors and mainly from natural materials. Wooden beams can be painted in one of these shades or have the original color and texture of the wood. This trend is characterized by artificially aged pieces of furniture and decoration.

In the photo there is a kitchen in olive color in the Provence style. The ceiling is finished in one color with an aging effect.

Country

Country style is hard to imagine without wooden beams. A spacious room will be decorated with complex timber structures, in small room there will be enough simple wooden planks in the right direction.

Scandinavian

Interior in scandinavian style has a light, most often white color scheme. Natural materials are used to decorate and fill the room, such as wood or stone. Ceiling beams made of bleached wood will harmoniously look in the interior.

Modern

The ceiling in a modern style can be decorated with beams made of wood, metal or drywall. Layout can be simple or complex geometric shape... The design will be complemented by stylish lamps, LED strip or spotlights.

Classical

The interior in a classic style will be decorated with smooth wooden or plaster beams. Cross-on-cross masonry will look harmonious.

Chalet and rustic

The chalet and rustic style is characterized by the cozy atmosphere of an alpine house. Wooden ceiling beams do not have to be painted, the original color, texture and pattern of the tree will be very useful. In such a design, it is appropriate to use lamps with warm light, emphasizing the comfort and warmth of the interior.

In the photo there is a chalet-style attic. The decoration is completely made of natural wood.

Lighting and illumination

Different types of lighting will have a completely different result. Spotlights can be installed in the beams or between them in the ceiling.

For complex volumetric structures, mobile lamps can be attached directly to the beams and change their position if necessary.

The chandelier should reflect the general stylistic idea, for example, in a country-style room it can be a low wrought-iron chandelier, and in the interior the Provence is neat with several textile shades.

An unusual effect is created by the LED strip, recessed into the side parts of the beam, creating a feeling of floating in the air.

With your own hands

Before proceeding with the repair, it is necessary to determine the dimensions of the beams and the distance between them. The distance between the beams depends on the area and height of the room.

  • In a room with high ceilings, it is acceptable to place beams close to each other, so the room will appear slightly lower.
  • Accordingly, in a small room, it is better to fix the ceiling beams at a sufficient distance.
  • The length of the beams depends on the desire to decorate the room along the entire length or to highlight only a part.

One of the easiest ways to construct ceiling beams is to make them out of Styrofoam.

  1. Styrofoam sheets are cut the right size and glued together into a bar.
  2. Then they can be pasted over with a film imitating wood or plastic and fixed to the ceiling. Installation is quick and effortless.

How to attach beams to the ceiling

Each material has a different weight and properties, respectively, the fastening is also different.

  • Before starting work, it is necessary to reproduce the marks on the ceiling where the future crossbars will be fixed.
  • For Styrofoam beams, liquid nails are sufficient.
  • To be sure of the result, the ceiling can be primed.

Wooden decorative beams are fixed with bars that are attached to the ceiling at a distance of 1 meter. A wooden false beam is fixed with self-tapping screws on top of the bars.

Ceiling decoration is an important detail in the interior. Ceiling structures are a good way to add personality and character to a design. In an apartment with a modern style, ceilings can be made of plastic or metal; in a modern and provincial design, natural wood will look harmoniously. Below are photo examples of the use of beams on the ceiling in rooms for various functional purposes.

Beamed ceilings bring a sense of homeliness and warmth to living spaces. Regardless of whether the beams are structural features of the room or perform an exclusively decorative function, the design of such a space is transformed. A ceiling with beams made in contrasting colors to the entire surface of the ceiling will attract attention and create a special optical effect of the interior. But even the elements of the floors, painted in the same tone with the ceiling, will not be ignored. Due to their structure and distinctive texture, ceiling beams made of wood or other materials become an outstanding element of any interior.

The presence of beams on the ceiling can be caused by various reasons:

  • in private houses of urban or suburban type, beams are an integral part of the building structure, elements of the frame floors to support the attic or attic;
  • the desire to give the interior a belonging to a certain style (for example, country, rural, eco, shabby chic or Provence are often accompanied by a similar ceiling finish);
  • the ability to hide the flaws of the ceiling finish - the placement of beams at the joints of drywall sheets significantly reduces the cost of final finishing surfaces;
  • in hollow ceiling beams, you can mask various utilities - from pipes to electrical wiring lines, in the cavities of such beams, you can embed lighting elements:
  • Various interior elements can be attached to beams made of wood, metal or stone - from pendant lamps to TVs.

So, we have decided that the beams on the ceiling can be decorative or perform quite obvious support functions. But what materials can they be made of? As usual, all materials for the execution of beams for the ceiling can be conditionally divided into natural and artificial:

  • wood- one of the most common, but not cheap materials for the manufacture of beams. For suburban households and private houses located within the city, wood is most often used conifers, but there are also options for deciduous types of beams made of wood (for country style or eco given view ceiling decoration is most relevant);
  • metal- beams made of steel or aluminum are often used in loft, industrial and high-tech interiors (lighting elements are often attached to such structures, but only decorative use is rare);
  • polyurethane- this artificial material is able to imitate almost any surface - from wood to stone. A substantial hallmark polyurethane beams are light weight products. Of course, the cost of artificial finishing elements is lower than their natural counterparts. Such beams can be used in interiors of any stylistic affiliation, it all depends on the size of the premises and the quality of the imitation "under a tree" or other materials.

The choice of material, appearance and configuration of beams in relation to the ceiling will be influenced by the following factors:

  • the size of the room and the shape of the ceiling (horizontal surface or vaulted ceiling, multi-level or low room height - all these factors must be taken into account when choosing ceiling elements);
  • room decoration style - classic style or ultra-modern high-tech will require a different approach in choosing ceiling beams;
  • repair budget - the cost of beams can differ significantly, depending on the material of manufacture, the size and complexity of the modification of structures.

Examples of the use of ceiling beams in rooms with different functionalities

Living rooms

It is with the living room that we most often associate the design of the ceiling with the help of beams. A spacious room for family gatherings or receiving guests is a room that more than others needs to create not only a cozy and comfortable atmosphere, but also originality, because it is the hallmark of a home or apartment. If the use of ceiling beams in the interiors of living rooms of private houses of urban or suburban type no longer surprises our compatriots, then deciding to use this element of the interior in apartments still causes some bewilderment. Meanwhile, the use of natural material or its spectacular imitation within the living room of city apartments brings that natural warmth that is so lacking in a noisy and gas-polluted metropolis.

One of the options for decorating the ceiling in the living room of a private house is to use wood as a material for cladding panels and decorating the surface with beams. In addition to the fact that the wooden ceiling brings natural warmth to the character of the interior, it can serve as a screen for the placement of engineering systems - ventilation and electrical wiring. Lamps can be built under wooden ceiling panels or lining, and chandeliers can be hung from the beams.

Another way to decorate the ceiling in the living room of a private house is the bleached surfaces of boards and beams. For small rooms and rooms with sufficiently low ceilings, it is better not to use a dark color for decorating the ceiling, so as not to create a visual effect of pressure hanging over your head.

You can also use a contrasting combination of light ceiling finishes and the use of dark wood (or its spectacular imitation) for the execution of decorative beams. The color of the beams can be repeated in the design of windows or doors, some elements of furniture or flooring, with this approach, the interior will look harmonious and complete.

The presence of rusticity in the modern interior of the living room will not only create an original appearance of the room, but it will also raise the degree of originality of the whole house to an incredibly high level. On the background modern design a spacious living room, rough-hewn logs or slabs of wood look contrasting despite the use of a neutral color palette. Usually, the rustic design of the ceiling beams is "supported" by the appropriate design of the fireplace area - the space around the hearth is revetted with large stones, as if they had not been processed.

Ceiling beams made from the same wood species as the main living room furnishings will look great and complement the harmonious design of the room. Often, ceiling beams and entire ensembles of storage systems create an original and at the same time organic alliance.

Bedrooms

The use of ceiling beams to decorate the ceiling in the bedroom is a design technique that is not common in our country. But in European design projects, such a constructive and decorative solution can be found quite often. If the height of the ceiling in the sleeping and resting room allows you to use decorating in the form of beams, you should not miss this opportunity. Depending on the material and color of your beams, they are able to bring structure, dynamism or the spirit of natural warmth and comfort to the character of the bedroom interior.

For the attic bedroom wooden ceiling with ceilings and beams - a design option is quite logical, because all these interior elements are design features and act not as a decor, but as load-bearing products that support the building frame. In such spaces, it makes no sense to hide a large bevel of the ceiling behind plasterboard screens, because this is how most of the height of the room is hidden and it loses not only square meters, but also the feeling of spaciousness and freedom.

Ceiling beams in the bedroom can be designed in the same color as the ceiling surface, or act as a contrasting element. The beams look organically, repeating in color the natural pattern of the floor covering or pieces of furniture - beds, for example.

Snow-white ceiling beams are suitable for the interior of almost any stylistic direction. Even a room with low ceilings will look light and airy, the white tone in the ceiling finish does not make the bedroom look heavy, even if large ceiling beams are used.

In a house built of timber, it is quite logical to see ceiling beams in the form of logs in the bedroom. Closeness to nature, some rustic atmosphere and natural color palette will certainly have a beneficial effect on the atmosphere of the room for sleeping and resting. In such an environment, you can relax and get ready for a sound and deep sleep.

Kitchens and dining rooms

For the decoration of a small kitchen-dining room, a snow-white finish is ideal for visual expansion of the space. But in an absolutely light kitchen space, it is difficult to avoid associations with the premises of sterile hospital wards, and the color temperature in such functional segments brings coolness. Dark wood ceiling beams will help to add contrast to the light room, and hence the dynamics. Chipped and intentionally rough surfaces wooden elements ceiling decor will bring not only a special flavor, but also motives of rural life.

The kitchen, completely decorated with natural wood, involves the use of natural materials and for finishing the ceiling. When floor-to-ceiling wood fronts of kitchen cabinets meet similar material finishing of ceilings, a feeling of infinity of space is created. Such a kitchen is warm and cozy.

The rustic dining room is cozy and comfortable. The abundant use of natural wood creates incredible warm atmosphere both for dinners with the family and for receptions with refreshments. In this case, wooden beams on the ceiling play an important role in shaping the character of a room in which everyone will feel comfortable.

An example of the use of ceiling beams when decorating the ceiling of a dining room located in a semicircular bay window.

Large logs as a ceiling decor will help to bring a little rusticity to the traditional style of kitchen decoration. Roughly hewn ceiling beams will look contrasting not only in color, but also in texture. But many interiors lack just such a "shake-up", originality.

Stone and wood fittings often go hand in hand in kitchens and dining rooms. Rarely is the use of stone decoration on the hearth, kitchen apron, columns or other interior elements dispenses with the use of wood for partial or even complete decoration of the functional space. Well, the installation of ceiling beams in this case is the least expensive design technique.

Ceiling beams painted "like metal" will perfectly harmonize with the steel sheen of the surfaces household appliances or work area worktops made of steel.

Bathrooms

It is not just difficult, but almost impossible to meet ceiling beams in the design of a bathroom in a Russian apartment. Especially when it comes to apartment buildings built in the last century, where and square meters a little and the ceilings are low. But in the modern private houses of our compatriots, considerable areas are allocated for utilitarian premises, and the height of the ceilings is enviable. In such spaces, you can not limit yourself in the choice of style and motives for its manifestation.

Many homeowners feel that wood has no place in the bathroom due to its poor water repellency. But there are two ways to solve this problem - first of all, you can use various antiseptic sprays that treat the entire surface of the beams and special varnishes that protect the elements of the ceiling decor from moisture, you can also use a polyurethane analogue of wood, which normally tolerates high humidity premises. But these ways of bringing rural motives into the interior of the bathroom are possible only if there is forced ventilation premises.

Hollow ceiling beams in bathrooms can be used to integrate lighting systems. Thus, you can not only transform the appearance of a utilitarian room, but also create a safer environment by isolating electrical devices from moisture.

Hallways and other auxiliary rooms

If the space of a private house is decorated with ceiling beams, then it would be logical to use this design element not only in the main rooms, such as a living room or bedroom, but also for decoration auxiliary premises- hallways, laundries, wine cellars and even corridors.

Examples of the use of ceiling beams when decorating the space of an office or library.

It is difficult to imagine the design of a bath or a home sauna without the use of natural wood, and hence the use of such a constructive and decorative element of the interior as floor beams. As a rule, steam rooms are very modest rooms that simply do not need high ceilings and the use of beams directly in rooms with a maximum temperature is impractical. But the design of the so-called "dressing rooms" and rest rooms in front of the steam rooms are excellent for the use of ceiling beams.

Beams on the ceiling in interiors with different stylistic design

Country style

Country style, like no other, is associated with the use of beams for ceiling decoration. The active use of wood (in rare cases of its imitation) allows you to create a design of premises that are in harmony with the surrounding nature. A slight carelessness in the design of the premises allows you to create an atmosphere in which you can truly relax and enjoy every minute of your stay in a comfortable and convenient environment.

Marine stylistics

If in nautical style a dining room or a kitchen is made out (perhaps three functional areas, not excluding the living room, connected in one space through an open plan), then the use of ceiling beams to create a warm and cozy atmosphere occurs very often. In the design of nautical-style rooms, cold colors often prevail - all shades of blue, the active use of white. Bring a little warmth to original interior the premises will be helped by elements made of wood with an untouched natural pattern. The warm woody shades of natural wood beams will look great on a crisp white ceiling.

An example of a bedroom in a nautical style using a complex structure of beamed ceilings. In the light and even airy image of the room for sleeping and resting, the complex composition of ceiling beams with dark fasteners becomes the focal center of the space that attracts all the attention.

Loft style or industrial style options

When using industrial stylistics in the interior of premises, the following design techniques are most often used - open communications, ceilings and other ceilings, large spaces and an open plan. Metal products are most often used as structures for floors and beams. The loft style is no exception, even for personal spaces such as the bedroom.

Tropical style

When decorating rooms in a tropical style, you can often find the use of a contrasting combination of a light ceiling and walls with colorful and even bright wood elements to create edging surfaces, dividing them into sections. Often, fabric or mats are inserted into such sections (bamboo is also possible). The resulting interior is never boring or trivial.

Classics and neoclassics

Modern classics no longer look as pompous as at the inception of the style, the rooms retain a sense of spaciousness even when using luxurious solid wood furniture with carvings and decor. Neoclassicism presupposes a more relaxed approach to interior decoration - expensive wallpaper with gilded embossing or abundant stucco moldings are rarely used to decorate the ceiling. For example, in a bedroom with a large luxurious bed, actively decorated with carvings, the ceiling may well be decorated using beams of natural shades that are simple and laconic in shape and texture.

A classic-style bedroom with a fireplace and a snow-white ceiling with neat beams looks luxurious, but at the same time cozy.

Chalet Style

The stylistics that came to us from southeastern France are known for their commitment to the use of natural materials. The style, the formation of which took place in the difficult climate of mountain settlements, presupposes the strength and stability of structures that can serve more than one generation of the family. For the decoration of suburban homes, not necessarily located in ski resorts, wealthy homeowners often use, if not all the motives of the Chalet style, then some elements of this style close to nature. The decoration of the ceiling always gives out the belonging of the room to the style of the Chalet - it is always the abundant use of natural wood, the use of large beams, often passing from the ceiling to the walls, the organization of complex geometric structures and "interweaving" of beams or logs.

Modern style

Ceiling beams made of polyurethane fit perfectly into the decoration of a room decorated in a modern style. Small hollow beams are suitable for ceiling decoration, both in private houses and in apartments. A living room or bedroom with a simple finish, laconic and functional furnishings and a minimum of decor will be transformed using wood-like beams.

Minimalism style

When decorating rooms in a minimalist style, you can find the use of ceiling beams to give the interior a touch of home warmth and coziness, because spaces decorated with a minimum amount of furniture and a complete lack of decor can look like public spaces. There are no associations in the bedroom space with office space, but using even a pair of beams to decorate the ceiling will bring warmth to the design of the room for sleeping and relaxing.
