How to trim a ceiling plinth with a miter box template. How to properly cut the corners of ceiling plinths: both with and without a miter box Ceiling fillets how to remove the corner

In many apartments and houses, the ceiling plinth (fillet) is the final design element that complements the interior of the room. The main difference between the ceiling plinth and the floor plinth is that when cutting the latter, minor mistakes are permissible, because it can be putty and painted. Cutting the corners of the skirting board requires the highest precision. In this article, we will tell you how to correctly mark and cut the ceiling plinth so that after installation in place, all the elements fit snugly to each other and there are no gaps.

What is the ceiling plinth made of?

The most popular materials for making ceiling plinths are:

  • foamed polyurethane;
  • Styrofoam;
  • expanded polystyrene.

All these materials are characterized by low mechanical strength and ease of handling. They can be cut both with a hacksaw for metal, and with a reward, a special hacksaw for wood for fine work... Cutting with a knife is not recommended, because a correctly marked and cut off corner does not need to be adjusted, and if the marking or trimming is done incorrectly, then it will not work to correct the situation with a knife, as on wooden floor plinths.

Corner marking

First, the skirting board must be marked. There are two ways. The first is suitable for external and internal 90 degree angles. The second method is suitable for any angle. The essence of the first method is that a standard carpentry miter box provides a cut of any material at angles of 90 and 45 degrees. Therefore, only the corner of the wall is marked on the plinth, that is, the short part of the corner of the plinth. Then they are placed in a miter box and cut at an angle of 45 degrees. The second method is more complicated, but much more reliable. A plinth is applied to the junction of the wall and ceiling and mark where the outer edge passes. Then the plinth is also applied on the other side of the corner. The intersection of the marks is the outer edge of the skirting board joint, and the corner of the two walls forms the inner edge of the joint.

In this case, it is necessary to take into account the direction of the corner, because inexperienced finishers sometimes confuse it and the joint has to be redone. After that, the corresponding markings are applied to the plinth. This can be done both by measuring the marking distances on the ceiling, and by attaching a piece of plinth to the junction of the wall and ceiling and marking the outer and inner edges on it. Then the plinth is placed in a miter box with a variable angle and carefully cut. If there is no such tool, you can use a regular wooden miter box by cutting the corresponding grooves in it.

How to cut a skirting board - Video

There are several rules to help you make a clean cut on any skirting board:

  1. Be sure to use a miter box and never cut "by eye", this will lead to the appearance of cracks.
  2. Position the skirting board so that the main cutting force is directed towards the vertical wall against which the skirting board is pressed.
  3. Cutting in the other direction will cause the skirting board to move and cause scratches and damage.
  4. To cut the skirting board, use a sharp tool - a metal hacksaw or a reward. If the blade is dull, replace it.
  5. Move the hacksaw in smooth movements without jerking, keeping the blade strictly parallel to the floor or table.
  6. Practice on unnecessary pieces before cutting the skirting board to size, this will help fill your hand.

The quality of the ceiling finish greatly affects the appearance of the room. Therefore, they try to do everything perfectly, or very close to it. The finishing touch to the design is the ceiling plinth. They give the finish a complete and holistic look. The strips themselves are mounted on flat surfaces simply: on special glue white, but with the design of the corners there are problems. Without knowing how to make the corner of the skirting board correctly, a lot of material deteriorates. We will tell you about how and what to cut it in the corners.

What is it made of and what is it called

The very first skirting boards on the ceiling were made of plaster. They were cast in special molds and then installed on the ceiling with mortar. They called such curly ornaments fillets. Today you can rarely see them: they are expensive, and outwardly they are almost indistinguishable from the cheaper options. And the name is almost lost.

The most popular ceiling skirting boards today are made of polyurethane or polystyrene. They are inexpensive, look great, easy to install, have a wide range of profiles and patterns. The width can be from 5 mm to 250 mm. They are used in almost any room, decorated in any style. Exception - Most often used here wooden crafts- the style dictates its own terms.

There is also a similar plastic finish. It is mainly installed in bathrooms. But also in wet rooms you can safely mount polyurethane strips - they are not afraid of dampness.

You need to cut the ceiling plinth in the corners of any material in one of the ways described below. The only exception is plastic skirting boards: you can arrange such a corner only using ready-made corners.

How and how to cut

Working with skirting boards from different material implies using different instruments for cutting. When working with a wooden skirting board, it is more convenient to work with a saw on wood. All others, including plastic ones, made of polystyrene and other polymers, are better cut with a blade for metal. The result is a smoother cut, less burr. Saws are usually used when working with a miter box.

When working with polystyrene skirting boards without special devices, they cut them with a good office knife. Its blade is quite thin and even, the cut is smooth, not wrinkled. If you use a saw with polyurethane or polystyrene, do not press hard: you can wrinkle.

In general, to get used to the tool and material a little, take a piece and practice on it: cut, saw, trim. So there will be fewer problems when working.

How to get the correct angle

Most of the problems when working with skirting boards arise in the design of corners. Since the surface of the products is complex, it will not be possible to simply cut off at the desired angle: it is also necessary to cut it so that they dock and, preferably, without large gaps. There are actually several ways to make the corner of your skirting board perfect (or nearly so).

Using a miter box

If the corners and walls in the room are even, you can use a special carpentry tool- miter box. This is an upside-down U-shaped chute with lines for cutting at 90 ° and 45 °. The part in which you need to make a gash is laid inside, a saw is inserted into the guides. The part is held in place and cut at the desired angle.

In the case of skirting boards, not everything is so simple: they must simultaneously adhere to two surfaces, therefore they must be pressed against one or the other wall of the miter box. When working with ceilings, they are pressed against the side closest to you.

Sequence of actions for finishing outer corner you need to make a wash at an angle of 45 degrees. Place the miter box in front of you. Trying on how the plinth will be located, determining which part of it will be attached to the ceiling. In order not to get confused and cut off the ceiling plinth correctly, put the strip that will be located on the right on the right, the one on the left on the left.

Press the part that is on the ceiling to the bottom of the miter box. The other side is closer to you and raised. Lean it on the wall of the device so that it does not stagger when cutting. That is, the front part of the skirting board turns out to be turned away from you. Do the cutting direction as shown in the photo below. By folding the two cut pieces together, you get a protruding outer or outer corner.

How to make the outer corner of a skirting board using a chair

First put the sawn-off parts in place "dry", without applying glue. If the geometry of the corner is not so perfect, you can tweak it a little with a knife. It is easier to cover small errors with a special putty.

The situation is very similar with the inner corner of the skirting board. First you try on which side will be on the ceiling, press this part to the bottom of the miter box, lean the second part on the wall closest to you and make cuts as shown in the photo below.

And again, first try on without applying glue, if necessary, slightly adjust. Then apply a thin bead of glue to both surfaces that will adhere to the wall or ceiling.

Your own version of how to use the miter box correctly is shown in the video.

How to make a corner of a skirting board without a miter box

Few people in apartments or houses have angles of exactly 90 °. Small deviations are easily corrected after fitting. But not always. Then you have to mark everything "in place" - under the ceiling.

You will need a finely contoured pencil (hard - it is not so visible on the ceiling, but leaves quite clear marks near), a small piece of plinth, a ruler and a good stationery knife if you work with polyurethane (polystyrene) baguettes or a metal saw to work with the rest of the materials.

Apply the plinth to the corner, draw along the outer edge with a pencil. Apply to the other side of the corner, also mark. You have a cross on the ceiling, the center of which marks the place where the plinths of the ceiling plinth should converge (look at the photo). Having installed a piece of plinth in the corner, which will be glued there and resting it with its end on the wall, transfer the mark to it.

How to make corners on skirting boards without using special tools

Now take a ruler and connect the edge of the skirting board with the marked mark. If you just put the plinth on the table and cut it along the line, in the corner the two parts will still not add up: it will interfere interior... It can be trimmed later by trying on the ceiling. The second way is to set the piece to be cut on the table with the piece that will be on the ceiling. And cut along the line, but holding the knife at an angle of about 45 °. It will still need to be corrected, but much less (and less likely to make a mistake).

Repeat the same operation with the second bar. You attach to the right wall, rest the butt against the adjoining wall, mark the place where the cross is drawn, draw a line and then cut it off. Correction Carried out "dry" without applying glue.

You repeat exactly the same steps for the outer (protruding) corner. Now you know another way to make a corner of a ceiling plinth, and without a scaffold or other special devices.

With decorative corners

There is one more, simpler way. For skirting boards made of polyurethane or polystyrene, use ready-made, factory decorative corners... They are installed in a corner, strips are glued to them closely. It is very easy to cut them if necessary: by a few millimeters with an ordinary clerical knife.

How to join in corners

If the installation of the first corner is completed, we can assume that you have already learned almost everything. "Almost", because you still need to learn how to join the corners and cut the planks to length. When some part is already glued and there is a small distance to the corner, how not to be mistaken with the length? The answer is simple: leave some stock.

At first, you can cut a piece 10-15 cm longer: it will be possible to redo it several times if something does not work out right away. Then you make a corner in the way described above, try it on dry, adjust everything so that the result suits you. Only then can you attach the already cut strip to the corner and mark the place to which it can be shortened. The trim should be exactly 90 °. It is not necessary to use a miter box. Just try to place the knife (hacksaw) perpendicular to the surface.

A skirting board has many different functions, here are the main ones.

  1. Aesthetic function... The skirting board covers various joints and irregularities on the ceiling and walls, thereby making the transition from ceiling to wall beautiful and graceful.
  2. Decorative function... There are many types of skirting boards. Many of them are superbly executed and finished in a way that really grabs the attention of guests. That is why the skirting board can serve as a separate decoration of the apartment, a kind of "highlight" that will give the interior completeness and unique originality.

Unfortunately, installing a skirting board is not as easy as it seems. The main difficulty lies in finishing the corners. On the first try, almost no one succeeds in correctly completing this difficult task. That is why today we will talk about how to correctly install the plinth so that its corners look harmonious and tightly joined with each other?

What tools do you need for the job?

  • pencil;
  • tape measure or ruler;
  • hacksaw;
  • miter box.

The last tool is worth mentioning separately. The miter box is not a very complicated device in the device, which can be bought at any building materials store.... It is a wooden or plastic tray with slots into which a hacksaw is inserted. Usually, the holes are designed so that you can cut products at an angle of 45 and 90 degrees. More "advanced" models have the ability to cut at an angle of 60 degrees. The most professional and complex models in the device allow you to do this in any direction and at any angle, thanks to the rotating knife blades.

What are we going to cut?

Before starting work, you should determine what material the ceiling skirting boards are made of.

Table. Materials used in the manufacture of skirting boards.

MaterialPeculiarities

The most fragile material, it crumbles easily. Of the advantages, one can single out its low cost. But it is crossed out by the shortcomings of the material - due to the fragility of expanded polystyrene, you need to use a hacksaw or a knife in the work. When cutting, do not press hard, work should be done carefully and carefully, otherwise the skirting board will break.

Such skirting boards are also inexpensive, but they are quite fragile. As with the previous material, here you also need to be careful in your work. In addition, PVC skirting boards attract dust as they are highly electrostatic. They cut products with a knife or a hacksaw.

These skirting boards are more durable and reliable than their counterparts, but they also cost more. When cutting, they hardly crumble, they are difficult to break. In work, it is worth using a construction knife or a hacksaw designed for working with metal products.

The most durable and reliable type of skirting boards. They are the most difficult to work with because of the increased strength and resistance of the tree to physical stress. Use a hacksaw during the procedure. It is good if it has small teeth, since large notches often damage the tree.

Quite strong and reliable fillets (this is how ceiling plinths are also called). But they have a rather significant drawback. It lies in the fact that polyurethane products do not tolerate temperature changes and are very sensitive to cold or, conversely, strong heat. This should be taken into account before starting to work with products of this type.

On a note! There are special fittings to facilitate the difficult process of installing fillets. These are special corners designed for inserting skirting boards into them.

They are useful in that they hide various errors made when working with the installation of fillets. You just need to cut the skirting board at an angle of 90 degrees, and the corner will do the rest of the work for you. It will mask holes and crevices, if any, give the ceiling beautiful view and will greatly facilitate the work.

Let's get down to business

So, all the preparations are over, the skirting boards are selected, and the most important thing remains - to cut them beautifully and accurately, so that later you do not have to redo all the work again. There are two ways of slicing: with and without miter box... Both methods will be described here. Let's start with the easier one.

Cutting fillets using a miter box

The corners can be both external and internal. Let's take a closer look at each of the options.

Trim the inner corner of the product

First you need to attach the piece to the ceiling. This is done to measure the desired fillet length. After taking all measurements, you can install the plinth in a previously prepared miter box. Try to install it so that the fillet location is exactly the same as on the ceiling.... Hold the skirting board with your left hand and make sure that the fillet rests firmly against the farther side of the tool. The part that is intended to be attached to the ceiling should be on the top, and the bottom should be firmly pressed against the bottom of the miter box.

The hacksaw blade should be turned at 45 degrees. Check if this is the case and start cropping. In this case, the hacksaw should be as close to the left hand as possible. Do not press hard on the tool when cutting.

After the part is cut off, proceed with the processing of the adjacent skirting board. It should be cut in the same way as the previous one, only on the contrary, in a "mirror image".

Attention! When working with fillets made of PVC or expanded polystyrene, start from the front of the product. Then the final result will be more accurate and aesthetic.

Trim the outer corner of the product

First, you need to make the correct calculations and measurements for the perfect trimming of the skirting board. To do this, measure the distance that the fillet takes from the corner located on outside, to the nearest wall. Draw a line on the inside of the plinth, indicating the required length, while be sure to remember that the upper part of the fillet protrudes slightly outward.

After all measurements and calculations are completed, proceed to trim the model. Place the fillet in the miter box and carefully cut the piece. Measure the adjacent plinth in the same way as the previous one, make a stock. Cut in mirror image to the first skirting board.

Fitting the finished result

Now you can attach the resulting skirting boards to the ceiling and see what happened. The joints of the parts must be even, without gaps and notches, fit snugly together. If this does not happen, do not be discouraged: an ordinary knife will help you out. It can be used to trim the edges of the skirting board until you are satisfied with the result.

Note! The fillet trimming process using a miter box is only suitable when the angle between the walls is 90 degrees. V otherwise you will have to trim manually.

Ceiling skirting boards: cut with manual marking

If it is not possible to use a miter box in work, you must first properly prepare for work without it. It is best to practice on a fillet ceiling dummy. Skirting boards left over from previous work are also suitable.

It should be noted that the way of trimming the skirting board without a miter box is more accurate mark the cutting angle as accurately and correctly as possible. This way it is more convenient to cut the inner corners of the skirting boards. True, there are also disadvantages of manual trimming - a fillet made of wood or polyurethane is difficult to keep suspended during measurement work.

  1. Let's get to work. First of all, cut with a pre-prepared tool two special blanks at an angle of 90 degrees.
  2. After this is done, you can apply the plank to the ceiling, resting its end on the wall, which is perpendicular to the plinth. We take a pencil and draw lines directly on the ceiling that indicate the contour of the fillet.
  3. We carry out similar actions with the adjacent bar, we also lean it against the ceiling and draw a pencil line.
  4. Then we carefully examine the impromptu drawing. The point where the lines intersect is where the skirting board needs to be cut. But it's better to play it safe. Again, one by one, attach each fillet to your ceiling and already on them mark the place according to which the trim will be carried out. From this place to the other edge of the plinth, you need to draw a line. Then, along all the drawn lines, you need to cut off the fillets.
  5. After the trimming process is over, join the skirting boards together and apply them to the ceiling in the place where you are going to install.

Trimming the corners of the ceiling plinth by marking: 1. Mark the line of the first plinth. 2. Mark the line of the second plinth. 3. Mark the point of intersection on the skirting boards. 4. Cut skirting boards are joined at the corner.

If, after all the work done, you notice that the skirting boards are not evenly installed, there are gaps, cracks or other errors in the work - do not rush to despair and redo everything again. Putty or other sealant will help you out. With them, you can carefully fill the voids formed without damaging the skirting boards and their outward appearance... Fast and convenient, and most importantly - beautiful.

How to make a miter box with your own hands

Let's consider a few simple options.

paper version

If you have the skill of working with drawings, you can try to make a handy tool out of paper with your own hands.

For this you will need:

  • paper (cardboard, whatman paper, etc.);
  • protractor;
  • simple pencil.

The miter box template is done like this. First, you need to draw two lines that are parallel, and determine the place that is their center. Then we need a protractor. Use it to set all the corners you want on the paper. We draw your attention to the fact that before you start trimming the skirting boards, it is worth checking the distance between the walls with a special corner, and also measuring them with a protractor. Only after all the manipulations have been carried out can the fillets be cut off.

Remember to cut off the right side of the part from the left side. And the left side, respectively, on the right. But in the miter box, these details are placed the other way around. Right side should be placed on the left side, and the left part on the right.

Wood version

There are two ways to make such a miter box.

There is also a third way to replace a purchased miter box. But it does not mean making a model of a tool from wood or paper. You just need to take any object that forms an angle. They can serve as a corner or a tabletop made of wood. Measure carefully before trimming the skirting boards. To outline the corner of the fillet located inside, the length should be measured from itself. But to outline the outer corner, you need to be guided by the fact that the plinth will protrude into the room at a distance equal to the width of the fillet. According to all these calculations, sketch out the baseboard lines.

In conclusion, we note that the work of trimming skirting boards is very difficult and painstaking. Rarely does it turn out to cut fillets the first time so that they fit perfectly into place and do not form cracks and gaps. If this happens, do not despair, because you can always do work on the mistakes by filling the gaps with putty. Then the room will take on a well-groomed look, and you will rightfully be considered a master of your craft.

Methods for cutting the ceiling plinth for joining in the inner and outer corners using a miter box, template or by marking the wall. Tool selection rules and useful tips.

The content of the article:

One of the most difficult stages when installing skirting boards is their correct cutting... Only by correctly docking individual elements at the outer and inner corners, you will get the desired result. Fillets will look aesthetically pleasing and neat if you cut them off at the right angle and seal the cracks. To accomplish this task, a special tool (miter box) is used. And if it is not there, then other devices will help.

Selection of tools for cutting ceiling skirting boards

To properly and accurately cut the skirting board, you need to use a suitable cutting tool. It is chosen depending on the material from which the fillets are made:
  • Styrofoam... It is characterized by low strength and is relatively inexpensive, and therefore foam models are becoming more and more popular. Their strength does not particularly affect performance characteristics as the skirting board is usually not subject to mechanical stress. A regular stationery knife is suitable for cutting.
  • Extruded polystyrene foam. Cheap material, whose density is several times higher than that of foam. Because of this, cutting it is a little more difficult, and therefore a sharp and thin knife is used for this purpose.
  • Wood... Such skirting boards are more difficult to process, although they have many advantages (environmental friendliness, durability). They cost more
    especially if made of hardwood. Stock up on a hacksaw before cutting wood skirting boards.
In addition to the tool for direct cutting of the baguette, you will need a miter box. This is a special device made of wood, plastic or metal in the form of a box with notches on the sides. A hacksaw or knife can be inserted into it at the desired angle. Thus, the cutting angle is as accurate as possible.

It can be purchased at a hardware store or made by hand according to the following instructions:

  1. We knock together three boards 50 * 15 cm with a long edge in the shape of a three-sided, rectangular box. Please note that an angle of 90 degrees must be observed between the side rails and the transverse plank.
  2. Using a protractor, mark an angle of 45 degrees on the bars. Instead of a protractor, you can use a school square. In it, one angle is 90 degrees, and the other two are 45 degrees each.
  3. Before cutting the corners, mark the vertical direction with a simple pencil.

To work with this homemade device it was convenient and safe, the boards need to be well sanded before bonding.

Cutting technology for ceiling plinths

For efficient and high-quality work, you need to choose a tool in accordance with the material of the baseboard and choose a cutting method. If you have a miter box, then there will be no particular difficulties in the process. If it is not there, then two options are possible: cut according to a template and measurements on the ceiling, or make this tool yourself.

Features of cutting ceiling plinths in a miter box

It is necessary to work with this device with extreme caution so as not to blunt the tool and not leave cuts in unnecessary places. In the process, we adhere to the following instructions:
  • We fix the baguette in the miter box in the same way as it is planned to place it on the wall. The side that will be pressed against the ceiling on the miter box must rest against the sidewall.
  • We insert into the desired gap cutting tool(hacksaw or knife) and cut the fillet.
  • We process the joint of the ceiling plinth and apply it to the wall to check the correctness. The foam molding can be tweaked with a sharp knife if the roughness of the end is about 2 mm. Wooden skirting board can be simply sanded sandpaper... For ease of use, it can be glued to a wooden block.

When cutting and trimming polystyrene and polyurethane products, remember that these materials crumble and squeeze, therefore the tools must be sharp enough, and strong mechanical stress on them is undesirable.

Technique for cutting ceiling skirting boards

This method can be used if your corners are even and you want to trim the baguette exactly 45 degrees. To do this, before cutting the ceiling plinth in the corners, you need to draw a miter box on thick paper... Draw two parallel lines and mark the angles at the desired degrees using a protractor.

We place the fillet in this case in the same way as on a traditional miter box. Please note that you need to cut the skirting board while holding the tool in a strictly vertical position.

Rules for cutting ceiling plinths by marking

This method is used to cut skirting boards in cases where there is neither a miter box nor parts from which it can be made.

To do this, you need to make markings on the wall in this order:

  1. We put the baguette in the corner to the place of fastening.
  2. Along its one edge, draw a baseline on the ceiling for the level of attachment.
  3. We apply the fillet in the same way to the perpendicularly drawn line on the ceiling and again draw a straight line along one side. We should have two line segments that intersect at one point.
  4. We again apply two skirting boards in turn and mark this point on them.
  5. We repeat the same procedure now on the wall to mark the place of cutting from below on the products.
  6. We connect two points with a line. It can run at an angle of 38-45 degrees, since walls and corners are living rooms often uneven.
  7. Cut off the baguette along the drawn line.

When cutting in this manner, it is important to accurately trace all lines and mark points. An error of even a few millimeters will cause a gap to form. This method is suitable for cutting and joining both the inner and outer corners of the skirting board.

Method for cutting a ceiling plinth without a miter box

To neatly dock fillets in the inner corners, you can do without a miter box.

We carry out the work in the following order:

  • We apply the end part of the baguette to the sheet of paper and outline the contour of the convex side. It is more convenient to use a small piece of plinth (if any).
  • Cut out the resulting template.
  • We transfer the contour to the surface of the baguette with a simple pencil.
  • Cut along the drawn curve.
  • For fitting, one plinth is applied tightly with the end part to the wall, and then the second.
  • If there are small gaps, then they can be processed with a clerical knife or subsequently sealed with a sealant.

When working with a miter box, there are two things to keep in mind:
  1. The inner corner of the ceiling plinth is formed from two elements: the first one we put on the right in the miter box and cut from right to left, the second we start from the left and cut from left to right.
  2. We start the first part of the outer corner from the left and cut off from right to left, the second we start from the right and cut off from left to right.
In addition, you need to know the following nuances before cutting the skirting board:
  • Before you start cutting a baguette with a miter box, try cutting a test strip to avoid mistakes.
  • You can make the correct measurements by measuring the length of the inner corners of the bar along inside, and the outer ones - from the point inner corner the width of the fillet into the interior of the room.
  • If the baguette is installed under stretch ceiling, then attach it only to the wall. Adhesive composition under no circumstances should it get onto the vinyl surface.
  • The final fixing of the skirting board should be carried out only after the exact fit of the plank.
  • If the corners and walls in the room are even, then the fitting can be done on the floor.
  • When installing baguettes, it may be necessary to adjust them several times, therefore, stock up on tools and patience.
  • Instead of a template and a miter box, you can cut in the corner between the wall and the floor, or by moving the table against the wall. In this case, the end cutting angle should be marked on the wall, ceiling and baguette.
  • If you are interested in the question of how to cut a ceiling plinth without a miter box, and you do not have time to use templates, then you can purchase special corner inserts in advance. They will hide the gaps, but will protrude and stand out on the surface.
  • If you have a skirting board valuable breeds wood, then you need to cut and install it very carefully, since a large number of putties for sealing joints will be too noticeable, and painting over a baguette is an inappropriate decision, because this way you will hide the natural texture of the array.
  • Expanded polystyrene products do not have to fit close to each other due to the softness of the texture, but wooden and plastic models must be well docked.
  • If the trapezoidal niches on the wall need to be bypassed from above with a plinth, then we join the piers at an angle other than a straight line.
    In this case, we cut off the plinth at an angle equal to half the joint. For example, if the walls are joined at an angle of 120 degrees, then we cut the fillet at an angle of 60 degrees.

The renovation is complete, you can admire the newly finished walls and ceiling as much as you like, but your gaze involuntarily rushes up - to the ceiling. And even if the interior is selected with taste, then the whole impression of the curvature of the joints of the ceiling plinth drops sharply. Learning how to make the corner of the ceiling plinth is not an easy task, but if you follow simple recommendations and be patient, you can easily make an even corner on your own.

After finishing the walls and ceiling, unsightly transitions remain between them. It is easy to decorate this transition using special devices - ceiling plinth. You can often hear a completely different name for a plinth - fillet. They are used to fill the transition points of two boundaries - the wall and the ceiling. When installing fillets, it is necessary to be neat and consistent, then the joints will turn out to be perfectly even.

There is no particular difficulty in this work, you can make a beautiful corner of the ceiling plinth in one room in just a few hours, the main thing is to carefully measure every detail and use little helpers.

Ceiling plinth material

The ceiling plinth can be different, but in most cases, when it comes to modern "euro" renovation, each of us represents light Construction Materials that will not burden the interior.

Modern ceiling fillets are made of the following materials:

  • foamed polystyrene;
  • plastic;

Chipboard and wood as a ceiling plinth have recently been used extremely rarely. This is primarily due to the high cost of materials. But fillets made of light materials - plastic or polystyrene are often used. This material is easy to use, and there is no need to invite specialists for installation. You can cope with the task yourself, the main thing is that the joints in the corners of the room are not crooked.

How to make a corner of a ceiling plinth

There are several options for making a beautiful corner of the ceiling plinth:

  1. With the help of a special device - a miter box.
  2. Manually (pencil marks) - no additional tools required.
  3. Using a stencil.
  4. Free cutting.

You can buy the device in any building supermarket, and if you wish, you can make it yourself. Find in the store, among a variety of all kinds construction accessories miter box - easy. The tool looks like a small box (most often wooden, but can be made of metal and plastic) with holes for a hacksaw.

On sale you can find a device for professionals with swivel mechanism... In this case, the tool can be fixed and rotated in different positions.

If you do not have time to go to hardware stores, then you can make the device yourself. To do this, you need to take scraps of plywood (three strips) or boards. The stripes must be the same size. Then you should connect the parts so that you get the letter "P" and mark the corners. According to this marking, it is necessary to make cuts with a jigsaw almost to the very base.

To quickly cope with the task and make the corner of the ceiling plinth, in addition to the miter box, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • hacksaw;
  • sharp construction knife;
  • pencil;
  • ruler.

When working with skirting boards, it is very important to choose the right cutting tool. If the skirting board is made of lightweight materials - plastic or foam, then it is undesirable to cut them with a hacksaw so as not to damage the product. If used plastic skirting board covered with wood veneer, you can use a hacksaw for metal - it will provide even cut... A regular construction knife with a sharp blade will help you cut the foam baseboard evenly. If you are faced with the task of installing a wooden plinth, then it is better to use a hacksaw with fine teeth.

When the question arises - how to cut the corner of the ceiling plinth exactly, you need to carefully outline everything several times, and only then start cutting. For each corner, you should make your own blank, and you must leave a small stock of material, equal to five centimeters. In order to avoid the formation of a gap at the junction, you need to determine in advance at what angle the wall converges in the room, and outline the cut line.

To mark the plinth directly on the ceiling, it is advisable to use a simple pencil. Then each element must be transferred to the miter box and positioned in the same way as the plinth will be on the ceiling in the corner.

One part of the workpiece should be pressed tightly against the miter box and cut off with a sharp tool along a strictly marked line. The same should be done with the second part of the skirting board, but the workpiece must be placed in the opposite slot of the miter box (mirror image). If necessary, the edges of the cut should be additionally processed with fine-grained emery paper.

In order to avoid a large waste of material, it is advisable to make a template in advance from the scraps of the plinth. This is only possible if the corners of your room are simple.

How to cut the corners of a ceiling plinth

There are internal and external corners. Let's take a look at how to cut off the corner of the skirting board.

Internal corner execution:

  • take the necessary measurements;
  • install the plinth in the miter box so that it is exactly positioned on the ceiling;
  • press the bar against the opposite side of the miter box. For the convenience of work, it is better to hold the plinth with your left hand;
  • take a hacksaw or a sharp construction knife and place it at a 45-degree angle in the notch on the fixture;
  • make a neat cut in the plinth;
  • a similar adjacent part of the plinth must be cut off in the same way, only position it in the miter box in a mirror image.

This image shows schematically how to cut a plank for an inner corner:

The outer corner of the ceiling plinth does not come across as often in the living space as the inner corner, and the technology for cutting out such a corner is not so difficult. Try to make the corner of the baseboard the same as the inner corner, just the opposite. First, mark the two elements, and then insert them into the miter box and fix. The longest part of the skirting board must be positioned on the left side of the fixture. After trimming, each piece is first applied for joining directly on the ceiling, in order to check the evenness of the joint. If the edges are uneven, then they can be slightly trimmed right on the spot, and only then the skirting boards can be installed.

If you did everything right, then you should get the perfect angle, provided that your wall is completely flat. In apartments with non-standard layout corners may not be ninety degrees, rounded, or have multiple intersecting edges. In this case, the miter box method will not work.

How to join the corners of the skirting board

At non-standard angles, it will be somewhat more difficult to match the corners of the ceiling plinth. It is necessary to use a construction knife - directly on the spot, attach the plinth to the wall and make an arbitrary cut "by eye". It is not easy to try on the structure while it is suspended; this work is painstaking and time-consuming. But if you try hard, then with maximum accuracy you can get beautiful corner... When asked how to connect a corner, most experienced specialists answer that it is necessary to adjust the plinth on the ceiling "dry", constantly cutting the edge of the plinth with a sharp knife. For such a fit, you must use a material with a margin. After receiving perfect result you can permanently glue the skirting board.

Smooth corner joining.

How to adjust the corner of a skirting board without a miter box:

  1. Place one piece of skirting board against the ceiling and press firmly.
  2. Use a pencil to draw a horizontal line.
  3. Take the second part and follow the same steps.

  1. Find the intersection point. If you draw from this point to the edge of the baseboard, then you should get an angle equal to 45 degrees.

If you have a "good eye", then there should be no questions about how to join the corners of the ceiling plinth. Moreover, you do not need special devices - it is enough to be guided by a homemade drawing. Take thin plywood and draw a rectangle. Using a protractor, mark a 45-degree point on one side and the other of the triangle. Draw lines to connect the edges. With this layout, you can easily dock the corners of the ceiling plinth.

How to glue the corners of a ceiling plinth

The standard length of a modern ceiling plinth (plastic or expanded polystyrene) is two meters. When calculating the amount of materials, it is better to take fillets with a margin. In addition, you should decide in advance on the width of the skirting board. So, for small rooms, narrow fillets are suitable, and for spacious rooms you can purchase wide ones.

Plinth is glued in different ways:

  1. Directly on the putty to the wall even before the wallpaper is glued.
  2. Straight to the new wallpaper.

Most experts advise gluing fillets directly onto the wallpaper.

What are skirting boards glued to:

  • on the Moment glue;
  • on the putty mixture.

First option will do for perfect smooth walls, but even if a small space appears between the wall and the baseboard, it can be filled with the same glue (sold in white or colorless). If this option is acceptable for you, you can get to work. Otherwise, it is necessary to pre-align the walls or install fillets in another way - on the putty mixture.

Majority experienced builders they do this, but it is unlikely that you will be able to make a perfectly even cut of the wallpaper yourself, in addition, you need to spend more effort to fit them to the ceiling plinth.

In the event that you cannot cope with the angle of the skirting board, you can purchase a skirting board with a special finish that will match the pattern of your skirting boards.

It often happens that everything is done correctly, but one corner is still not perfect - it looks ugly. To avoid irregularities and gaps, you can correct the situation. Take a can of white sealant and fill in the dents or crevices, and you need to work exclusively by hand; no spatula or other handy tools will help you in this matter.
