Do-it-yourself garage shelves - various options from wood and metal. Making shelves and racks for a garage with your own hands How to properly weld a rack from a corner

In garages, usually not only the car "lives", but also the most important economic problem is solved - the storage of all kinds of useful things, from canned pickles to working tools, from building materials to equipment for fishing and hiking.

Most garages are spacious enough. The walls of the room, if not placed on them a functional structure with many sections and shelves, are actually idle. So why not fill them with rows of shelves? Any reasonable thinking man understands that racks make life easier, help keep the room in order, get rid of the chaos of things around the user.

One of the fastest and most technically simple decisions is to buy ready-made modules... Financial costs will be required, which is hardly profitable for many garage owners. But for those who do not like to tinker with a drill, a hacksaw, and generally far from design activities - the option is ideal.

The advantage of this method is that assembly is extremely simple, and dismantling is equally simple. You can buy such shelving modules in hardware, furniture and repair and construction stores. Initially, the buyer determines what material suits him best, what sizes (sets are completed in different ways). He pays money, brings the product to the garage and installs it in just a few hours.

Advantages: speed, simplicity, elegance of execution (every detail is created on high-quality equipment).

Disadvantages: very tangible cash costs. Some part family budget"Breaks away" from food, clothing, entertainment, etc.

Creative experiment and personal participation

To make a rack on your own, special skill is not required. Materials are used that are affordable, and often just at hand (there are such a closet or the same garage): trimmings of pipes, a metal profile and a corner, pieces of plywood, chipboard, thick elastic plastic.

Some craftsmen thought of using ordinary plastic canisters instead of drawers. When the canister is horizontal, its top handle becomes a side handle. For it, each drawer is pulled outward when it needs to be pulled out and replenished with its contents, or, conversely, to take an object from it.

Attention! If you liked the canister idea, make sure they are clean. It is unacceptable to use used containers in which traces of aggressive chemicals, radioactive and combustible substances have remained.

Advantages of homemade designs: saving money, incredible tone from the creative process.

Disadvantages: It takes a long time before the rack is ready.

DIY metal shelving. Manufacturing procedure

Step 1. Preparation. For self-made garage rack, you will need material and aids. Consider the average option (metal frame and wooden shelves).

Procurement of materials does not require fuss - plan your structure in advance, hatch an idea for a couple of months, no less. V otherwise it may turn out that not all of your user needs will be taken into account (width of shelves, their spacing, readiness to take a load of weight, etc.).

As for the tools. The garage always has the necessary technical means... But still, it is advisable to prepare them immediately before starting work. The list looks something like this:

    electric drill;

    grinder (it will help to cut thick strong bars or, you may have to use it to remove brick protrusions on the walls);

    screwdriver;

  • hacksaw for wood;

    hacksaw for metal;

    nails, screws, dowels (everything that may be needed to fasten parts to each other, as well as to brick / concrete / metal walls of the garage);

    bubble level;

    measuring corner (will help you check 90-degree angles);

    pencil or crayon for size marks;

Step 2. Measurements and drawing up a drawing. Check carefully if your shelving will be an organic piece of furniture. Sometimes it is necessary to deviate from the desired dimensions in order not to narrow the space for the vehicle's passage and approaches to it. In addition, in some heated garages, thermal communications are laid inside (in other words, a pipeline), as well as switchboard equipment, overhead wiring.

Attention! Under no circumstances should the rack come into close contact with hazardous electrical components. Compliance with safety precautions will protect you and your family from fires, health risks, and loss of property due to fire.

    at first - external dimensions(height and width of the entire structure);

    then determine what will be "inside" these dimensions: the number of horizontal levels (shelves), their height relative to each other. It is advisable not to make the same intervals, but different ones. Accordingly, you can place both large-sized items and smaller ones on the shelves;

    then check how many vertical sections your rack should have for your convenience.

Attention! It is undesirable to make too wide sections. Rarely placed supports are a direct threat of structural collapse. Even if this does not happen, an overly long shelf will quickly bend under the influence of the load of items stored on it. This means that the functionality of the rack will suffer, and so will your convenience.

Having dealt with the number of sections and levels, sketch the drawing on paper. Let it be a schematic picture without artistic sophistication. The main thing is that it is clearly visible and understandable on it: how long and how many parts need to be prepared before assembly.

Step 3. Cutting vertical parts. Add 1 to the number of sections that you approved in your directive and multiply by 2. Exactly as many vertical details you need. Why +1? From left to right: support, section, support, section ... support. In other words, strong supports are needed at the edges, and there are always one fewer sections when alternating.

Where does "x2" come from? Between the sections, the shelves "converge" on a vertical plane, which is not solid in a garage rack, but is conventionally designated by stiffening ribs from bottom to top. And of course, there should be at least two such ribs at each shelf junction. It makes no sense to do three, and one vertical part is clearly not enough (the stability of the rack is in doubt).

Ideally, all of your details will be the same if a metal corner or profile is sufficient. If it is not enough, then stitched sections are possible in some areas, that is, the part is made up of overlapping scraps. Make sure that the connection is of sufficient quality. Use tie bolts or rivets (screws are less effective).

Step 4. Cutting horizontal parts. When you drew the diagram, you determined the number of shelves and their width. Logically, on narrower shelves, you will store lighter items. On wider and more solid ones - something heavy, difficult to lift (disassembled engines, equipment, various units, metal blanks of heavy weight, etc.). Hence, high strength materials are preferred.

By the way, wood chipboards are not an option. They have very weak direct weight resistance. The pressed board is quite fragile and will not support much weight if the shelf is wide and does not have an intermediate support. The maximum width of the shelves, which is recommended when using chipboard, is no more than 55-60 cm. Multi-layer plywood with a thickness of 0.9-1.2 cm is much stronger. But it is better not to risk it anyway.

Is there a way out? Of course have. Already, since you took up a hacksaw and a saw, cut an edging for each shelf - additional elements that will serve as a reinforcing "frame". In such a shell, even chipboard or plywood will be great. They will not bend from the gravity.

In general, garages tend to be cluttered and heavy on the parts stored on the shelves. Where there is a car, there are always all kinds of metal chains, arcs, engine parts, batteries, discs and other spare parts. Therefore, it makes sense not to waste time on trifles, but to immediately make a solid rack, as they say, for centuries.

Step 5. Build. The first step is to install vertical supports. The side wall parts are fixed first, the rest later. The question of how to fix it to the floor, ceiling, walls is individual. It does not cause any particular difficulties. The only thing to remember about the super strength of this particular fastener. Use long, thick screws for walls and ceilings, they are suitable for the floor or solid dowels without threads.

Attention! Remember to use a level to avoid curvature and distortion.

Now it remains to screw on the horizontal shelf frames. The marking of the fasteners could have been done in advance, but this is not essential. By acting carefully and slowly, you can measure each horizontal level as you assemble. Place wooden shelves on the finished frame. A do-it-yourself garage rack is ready!

Not a single car enthusiast can do without an equipped garage space. Do-it-yourself shelves and shelving systems can provide a comfortable arrangement of tools and parts and quick access to them.

Construction requirements

Before starting work, you should familiarize yourself with basic requirements to a homemade design:

    Reliability. Shelves and racks must be strong, as they are designed to store heavy loads, under which the boards should not bend.

    Minimum area. The design should be compact as the main space is not intended for storage.

    Availability. The rack should occupy a place that has open access.

At the same time, experts suggest adhering to established standards:

    The optimal width of the shelves should not exceed a meter.

    It is better to store large items on the lower tiers so that in case of unforeseen circumstances they do not cause damage by falling from a low height. This arrangement is necessary for security reasons.

    The height of the shelves in the upper tiers is usually adjustable from 25 to 60 cm, for the lower tiers it does not exceed a meter.

    Depth calculation is relevant for multilevel structures and usually reaches 45 cm.

Taking into account all the parameters, you can safely start making shelves with your own hands.

Varieties and purpose

You should take into account the parameters of the garage, the funds and the purpose of the future construction.

Most items are needed to store tools or parts of various sizes.

In this case, there are several types of classification, the first of which says about the design features:

    Open. Needed for quick access to a certain thing. The open type of shelves is divided into wall and hanging ones. Wooden or metal bases are suspended on the wall with the help of corners, the fastening of which can be dismantled or permanent. Previously, special anchors must be installed on the wall to hold the entire structure.

  • Closed. Designs are used to eliminate the loss of small items.

Wood or metal are used as common materials. In rare cases, the structure can be made of plastic. However, based on practice ideal option will be the implementation of the combined type construction.

For making yourself, the following assembly options are suitable:

    Removable or movable. The shelves form a rack with castors on the lower tier. The mobile base will ensure optimal load distribution.

  • Permanent. The shelving system is designed for specific areas that need to be pre-allocated. To do this, you should initially create drawings that involve dividing the garage into several parts. Standard includes disposable assembly and securing of one-piece structure with brackets.
  • Collapsible products. They are convenient in that they can be expanded and easily dismantled in case of replacement or renovation of the premises. The height and number of shelves can be adjusted, and it is also possible to rearrange the shelves to a new location.

  • Attic shelf. Hanging shelves are made of a corner and a metal profile that serves as a base. The entire structure is usually attached to the ceiling or beams, thereby saving space in the garage compartment. For fastening, you will need to install special hooks, they need to be driven in or welded with ceiling beams... Thus, they can be easily detached if necessary.
  • Rotating products. These structures are not intended for storing large items. Their main advantage is that they save time when searching for suitable parts. For example, screws or nuts.

  • Homemade tool shields. The shelves are suspended from a sturdy back wall, which is secured to the wall using anchors. Hooks or small stands can be installed on the shield for mobile access to any thing.

When choosing a product, one should start from the parameters of the room. It is also necessary to remember that the more - the better, more spacious and more comfortable.

There is no need to save on the size of the shelves, because high-rise structures will not take up a large area anyway.

Choice of materials

Before making your own shelves and racks, you must choose suitable material. This question confronts the owner of the garage quite sharply and is often able to cause confusion, because the construction market is full of wide choice proposals.

There are options:

  • wooden;
  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • mixed - are a combination of two or more materials to build a single structure.

Experts suggest starting from the intended purpose of operation. For example, a garage shelf or shelving system for storing heavy tools must be sturdy. Therefore, such structures must be made of planks or metal.

Particleboard is not suitable as a material, since it is relatively light and wears out quickly enough.

Metal

Unlike wood, metal is a more expensive material. but metal constructions justify the investment with durability and long-term operation. Metal racks can carry a lot of weight and can store tools and parts of various sizes.

Usually metal shelves are made from steel or stainless steel plates welded together. This production method allows the sheet metal to withstand the weight of the keys and wheels applying great pressure and not suffer in a fire.

The disadvantages include only the fact that the metal corrodes under conditions high humidity... The modification of the product is carried out using a special anti-rust compound. However, if the structure is made of stainless material, it is recommended to carry out wet cleaning only from time to time.

Wood

Wood is a material that does not require additional welding works and is easy to handle. Wood planks can be adjusted to the required size by removing the excess part.

but given type material also has significant disadvantages:

  • with high humidity in the room, the tree begins to swell, thereby losing its original shape and collapsing from the inside;
  • wood is an organic material that is susceptible to rotting through the formation of molds;
  • the material has a low resistance to high temperatures. In the event of a fire, the fire will easily transfer to the wooden structure.

It is quite easy to avoid some unpleasant consequences - you just need to cover the surface of the product with varnish or special paint. It is important to remember that this procedure should be carried out from time to time, updating the obsolete layer.

For the manufacture of boards, the basis is taken different kinds wood: oak, pine, ash.

Required tools

For various materials special tool kit required:

  • Metal structures need welding assistance and a secluded spot free of flammable materials to get started. The parts of the metal frame can be fixed to each other by means of bolts and special angles.
  • Wooden structures will not go far without self-tapping screws, a screwdriver and a drill. Wood products can also be held together using special glue.

  • Combined designs require special preparation. To cut structural parts, you will need a grinder or a hacksaw, since usually the metal component acts as a skeleton.
  • Both wooden and metal materials that do not have anti-corrosion properties must be coated with special compounds. For example, wood will require varnish, and metal will require an anti-rust solution.

Fixation finished product to the wall is carried out by means of brackets and dowels, which can be driven in with precise hammer blows. An alternative to brackets are special anchors, which can be purchased at any construction market... With their help, it will be easier to dismantle the structure if necessary.

For ceiling materials it is necessary to additionally purchase studs or iron hangers.

How can you do it?

At the preparation stage, you should focus on the height of the intended product. If the garage has low ceilings, then racks should be made that will not leave even a millimeter of free space under the ceiling surface.

Before starting work, you need to measure the width and height of the shelves. The lower tiers should be roomy for bulky items, while the upper ones should be lower so as not to sag and save space. This principle guarantees the stability of the structure.

The simpler option is a wooden shelf. Most garage owners choose the most affordable and simple method of making their own shelving system using wooden planks.

The choice is due to the advantages of a wooden structure:

  • affordable price. Metal is valued much higher in the construction market than wood;
  • quick and easy assembly method eliminates the need to use a welding machine;
  • natural material is much more environmentally friendly;
  • the tree is strong enough and is not inferior in reliability to metal structures;
  • long service life.

The material must be strong, which implies the choice in favor of hard rocks. For example, oak is perfect for the manufacture of shelving, both in terms of strength and style. Vertical boards are made with a section of 10x5 cm, and not only can act as shelves wooden blocks, but also chipboard sheets.

It is possible to prevent the risk of fire and extend the service life by treating all parts with an antiseptic before assembling the structure. Further, on the vertical bars, it is necessary to mark the shelves, which can be attached to the supporting racks with self-tapping screws or special glue.

However, the most relevant option is fixing by means of corners.

After assembly, it is necessary to carefully cover the entire structure with colorless varnish. These manipulations are necessary to prevent swelling and damage to the structure of the tree by mold in conditions of constant humidity.

After drying, it is necessary to install the structure in a specific place. In order to increase stability, the racking system is fixed to the garage wall using dowels and metal brackets.

A successful combination of wood and metal - wooden shelves equipped with a metal skeleton.

The best and most popular option is a steel frame with wooden shelves. The materials will cost much more, but make up for the loss of funds with obvious advantages. They are resistant to moisture and fire, requiring no replacement for decades. Wood "makes it easier" to hit the wallet, as it costs much less steel.

For the base, you will need profiles or steel pipes up to 5 cm wide, which are attached with transverse components using metal corners up to 30 mm in size. These parameters are taken with the calculation of shelves up to 2.5 cm wide.

It is more practical to fix the corners with bolts, because such a system will be easier to dismantle to change the height of the shelves. A welding option is also possible, but it is irrational.

Shelves are made of plywood or chipboard sheets, after having measured their parameters. However, the width should not be less than one and a half centimeters, since the shelves must be strong and strong in order to perform their main function and not sag under heavy weight over time.

The assembly must be carried out in a free area, clearly following the instructions:

  • metal parts are divided by a grinder according to preliminary calculations and room parameters;
  • on vertical supports mark the future location of the shelves;
  • the corners are carefully screwed or welded to the vertical frame. In this case, it is necessary to strictly observe the markings so that the multi-tiered product does not warp;

  • in the event that a material is purchased that is unstable to rust, all metal parts are covered with a special anti-corrosion compound;
  • cut out shelves are applied across the structure, cutting off excess parts;
  • then it is necessary to grind and varnish the wooden components;
  • firmly attach the tree to the metal with self-tapping screws.

At the end of the work, the entire structure is attached to the wall. Brackets with dowels are ideal for this purpose.

The fixed storage system is a racking structure that is assembled on site and then attached to the wall. In some cases, such an installation is much more practical and is much easier to implement with mobile systems.

The assembly algorithm is carried out in six stages:

  • markings are made directly on the wall, in which holes are drilled and dowels are immediately screwed in;
  • metal or wooden frame cut according to pre-verified drawings and set parallel to each other;
  • the distant ones are screwed to the wall wooden beams by marking, strictly adjusting the level position using a level;

  • the skeleton of the structure is attached to each other in width using horizontal corners;
  • the front (front) parts are connected to horizontal beams on which the shelves will be located;
  • the last to attach the vertical supports and place wooden shelves in the previously developed grooves.

Thanks to the effort spent, you can get a stable structure that will serve for many years. However, such a structure has a drawback - in the event of repair or replacement of the garage interior, it will not be easy to dismantle the sturdy structure.

For storing tools and various parts, the shelving system is almost irreplaceable.

The only design requirement is that the shelves do not sag under heavy pressure.

For creating wooden product you will need to follow the standard parameters:

  • for the upper tiers, a height of 30 to 50 cm is required;
  • the width of the shelves should correspond to the size of 1.5 m for safety reasons, thereby contributing to the stability of the structure;
  • the optimal niche depth is 50 cm.

The preparatory stage for self-production is a clearly verified drawing and an approximate design. The next step is to create a frame and vertical supports from beams with a section of 10x10 cm.

The arrangement of the garage is an important detail for good master, because every thing should have its place so that it can be easily found. In order for this to be possible, you need to have a convenient storage system that can be purchased at specialized points of sale or made on your own.

Garage shelves can be different sizes and consist of various materials, therefore it is important to know what is used in which cases and how to properly equip them in the garage.

Peculiarities

The garage space can be used in different ways, but the general pattern will be the desire to arrange all objects as conveniently as possible so that they do not take up much space and do not clutter up the space. Especially it is important to keep this room in order if you have a car.

A car enthusiast needs space for the car itself, under the wheels for it, tires for winter and summer, materials for repairs and other useful little things. In addition, usually all small renovation work, because it contains all the main tools, access to which should be as simple and convenient as possible.

The easiest way to arrange everything you need in the garage are shelves of various designs and racks. The convenience of the shelves lies in the fact that they will fit in any garage, because they can have different options: hanging, corner, one or more shelves, wide, narrow, long, small... All this allows us to classify this element as the most important details, without which the arrangement of the storage area for the necessary things is impossible.

In view of the wide variety of structures and materials from which shelves can be made, it is possible to purchase them in specialized stores or try to build them yourself.

The advantage of a purchase option is that you will definitely get a well-made item and you will not need to make any effort to get it. The positive side in self-made designs, there will be a choice of material that is suitable for a specific garage, adjusting the dimensions to the existing dimensions and performing any version of the product design.

On shelves in the garage, you can store tools that are not often needed for certain jobs. It is important to provide space for liquid products. necessary both for the car and for other works. In this case the shelf can be closed or have a side to prevent the container from tipping over and falling off.

A motorist simply cannot do without shelves for storing tires with wheels, because this is an obligatory element of the driver.

When planning to make a shelf with your own hands, it is important to be guided by the basic principles of its placement in the garage - this is operational safety, so that the dimensions and design are easy to use and have no risk of injury.

Besides, it is important to correctly calculate the dimensions of this product so that the shelf does not sag, thereby creating the risk of breakage and falling of all contents on the floor, car or person.

When calculating the dimensions, you need to be guided that more than 15 kg per meter will not fit.

When planning the manufacture of shelves for a garage, it is best to resort to standard sizes - this is a meter or a maximum of one and a half length, width - from 30 centimeters for several tiers and up to 60 for single ones.

If the area of the premises is still poorly developed, it is possible to foresee the fastening of additional shelves to those that already exist, do not fix the shelves tightly, so that, if desired, you can change their height and location. Considering all these nuances, you can independently make comfortable and functional areas storage of a variety of things that will be located in the garage.

Materials (edit)

Thinking about making garage shelves on your own, it is important first of all to decide on the material from which they will be made, which will affect the design of the product itself, as well as the method of its attachment to the surface of the wall or ceiling. So, the most common are metal and wooden shelves.

Metal products most often done with a corner and a steel sheet.

The advantages of this type include:

  • high strength of the finished product;
  • long service life;
  • stable location on the surface;
  • strength and readiness for heavy weight;
  • fire resistance;
  • simple care measures.

There are also negative aspects in this kind of constructions, which include:

  • the large weight of the shelves themselves;
  • the impossibility of attaching their cinder block to the walls;
  • high cost of materials.

If we talk about shelves made of wood, then it is easier to work with them, because they do not require a welding machine and the ability to work with it, and there are many times more options for ready-made structures. Such shelves are usually attached using a metal profile.

If speak about positive aspects of such structures, then they include:

  • low weight of the finished product;
  • ease of creation;
  • neat appearance;
  • use on walls made of any materials;
  • low cost of materials.

But even in this case, it was not without the negative aspects associated with the use of wood for the manufacture of garage shelves, which include:

  • the risk of the occurrence and spread of fire;
  • changes in the characteristics of wood under the influence of moisture and dampness;
  • systematic work to return the product to an attractive appearance.

In addition, for the garage combined storage areas can also be used which can be made of several materials at the same time are metal with plastic, metal and wood. There may be separate shelves made of plastic, which have a variety of appearances and can bear a lot of weight, in addition, they are easy to maintain and convenient to install.

When choosing a metal for work, it is important to remember that it must be covered special composition from corrosion, otherwise the service life of the product will be significantly reduced, and the appearance will be unaesthetic.

Often metal shelves are chosen for heavy and rough materials. where other material won't serve as well.

If a tree is chosen for work, then it must also be covered with special paints that help protect the material from moisture and temperature changes. If this is not done, then after some time the shelves will begin to rot and deform, in addition, such conditions provoke the appearance of all kinds of pests that should not be in the garage.

For both types of structures, chipboard can be used as the shelf itself, or you can choose several good and durable boards of suitable width and cut into required amount parts.

When choosing the material from which the shelves for the garage will be made, it is important to take into account the number of things that will be on them and their weight, as well as the possibilities that will dictate the method of work, whether it is welding or nails.

There is no single right choice of material for garage shelves, it is important to choose what will be convenient and quick to do that will last a long time and will not require much effort in leaving.

Designs and dimensions

As soon as the material has been chosen from which the shelf for the garage will be created, you need to think about the design that will best fit into a certain room, will be able to accommodate a large number of things, while it will be easy to make and install.

Of the whole variety of designs, the main options can be distinguished:

  • open type;
  • closed version;
  • removable;
  • made as a frame on which boxes are hung.

Each version of the shelves has its own type of fastening system, which is important in the case of walls made of fragile materials or too heavy a structure.

So, there are types such as:

  • wall;
  • hanging on vertically standing racks;
  • ceiling;
  • single hanging shelf;
  • multi-tiered hanging shelf;
  • stationary structures;
  • shelves that can be assembled and disassembled;
  • structures on wheels that can be moved;
  • shelves that can be rotated along the axis.

If we talk about wall shelves, then they can be open type or have doors. It is convenient to store equipment on such structures, which is often used in work. It is most convenient to make them from a corner and attach to the wall, if possible.

Suspended structures are used when the garage has walls that are not suitable for heavy shelves.

For manufacturing, a corner is also taken and wooden base... To create a side wall, you can take a cable or a metal profile of a rounded shape. Shelves are attached to the ceiling with hooks.

The convenience of such structures is that they can be easily removed if they are not needed, and the disadvantage is in the mobility of the shelves, so you should not put anything heavy on them.

It is very convenient to build a special shelf in the garage for storing tools, where everything will be located in its place, in a clear sequence and by type of activity.

So, for screwdrivers, you can make a small wooden surface with holes, which will include all the products that are only in stock. This allows you to quickly find what you need. It is convenient to use hooks for keys, placing the keys on them from the smallest to the largest. Having such a working wall, it will be easy and convenient to carry out any repair work.

Ceiling structures can also be located against the wall, thereby being not so wobbly, which means that they can be used for any need. It is especially good to place unnecessary things in the house on them. This is a great place for junk, which is often needed in different kinds works.

Collapsible shelves of this type are convenient in that they can be either adjusted in height or removed altogether if there is no longer a need for them.

If there is no way to hang shelves in the garage, then the most a good option will become a rack.

He might be:

  • stationary;
  • mobile, where you cannot do without wheels;
  • rotating;
  • collapsible.

When creating shelves for a garage, it is important to use drawings, where you initially need to mark the type of structure, its dimensions and mounting option. At standard version nessesary to use generally accepted dimensions, where the length of the hanging shelf is one meter and the width is 35 cm.

If this is a stationary rack, then its length can reach two meters, and its width can increase to 60 cm. The distance between the shelves usually ranges from 25-35 cm and depends on what exactly will be located on them. The lower shelf needs to be made more voluminous in order to be able to place large and heavy objects on it.

For those shelves that are attached to the ceiling with cables, the optimal dimensions are 60 cm long and 30 cm wide.

The distance between the shelves will be small, only 15 cm, so such storage areas are suitable for small items that are not used very often.

How to do it yourself?

Thinking about how to make a shelf with your own hands, you need to take the process seriously. Homemade constructions must be strong so that they can safely withstand the weight assigned to them and have a margin of safety. The most important criterion creating storage places manually will be the safety of the finished structure and its functionality.

When creating a shelf, it is important to take care of its reliability and durability. When making a shelf, it is important to choose such a size that would allow you to quickly get to any shelf and easily find everything you need. Getting started, you need to decide which type of structure to choose and how to fix it, so that you can always adjust the height and location of the shelves.

To create a metal shelf, you need to stock up on the materials you need to work.

These include:

  • corners and metal profile from which the frame will be made;
  • welding, with the help of which the frame elements will be cut;
  • shelf material: metal sheets or chipboard, plywood, etc.

In order to build a good shelving unit or make a shelf, it is important to make a sketch of the future project, and then proceed to its implementation. Having cut all the elements of the frame, you can weld them together or twist them with screws, then lay the shelves and fix everything to the wall with anchors.

If it is decided to make garage shelves of wood, then it is important to know the sequence of work and prepare all the necessary equipment.

In work you will need:

  • bars from which the racks will be made;
  • plywood or boards from which the shelves will be made;
  • saw for cutting the main elements;
  • a sander to give a proper look to the elements of the rack;
  • paint for prevention;
  • screws or nails;
  • screwdriver or hammer.

To create shelves or shelving in the garage, the first step is to create a sketch, after which the vertical racks for the frame are cut out. The frame is assembled with self-tapping screws or bolts, after which the boards are laid on it. Finished construction it is advisable to treat with a stain, after which it can be varnished or painted.

If there are not enough materials to create a certain type of rack, we make a combined type of structure. It involves the use of metal and wood, or metal and plastic. A very convenient option would be a rack on wheels where the base is made of metal and the shelves are made of wood. In this case, it is also important to do preparatory work both with metal and wood, to protect them from moisture, temperature extremes and pests.

Hanging shelves are most conveniently mounted on brackets... To do this, you need to make a mark where the fasteners will be made. The installation of the frame is carried out using an anchor, by installing which, you can fasten a wooden shelf using self-tapping screws. If closed shelves are chosen for the garage, then these may be elements of old furniture. for the kitchen or any other room, which before use in new role must be verified. It is best to change fasteners and install new ones to protect yourself and protect what will be stored there.

If the garage inside is finished with plasterboard with insulation, then you can build shelves in the form of built-in storage areas which will be prepared in advance.

There are many options for the location of the shelves, as well as their designs, and everyone chooses for himself the most convenient option in construction, installation and location.

When planning the creation of shelves for the garage, you need to know some of the features of the process so that the work is done efficiently and correctly.

If the storage system will be mounted in an upright position, then it is possible to use:

  • brackets;

When choosing the height of the shelves that are supposed to be actively used, it is important to take into account the growth of the owner of the garage. What is located at the chin level will be convenient to work, and what is above this level can be used to store not very important things. It is convenient to use hanging shelves that do not interfere with walking under them, to place things that are rarely used or take up a lot of space.

For suspended structures load-bearing elements are located at least 60 or 70 cm, otherwise the plywood or board will begin to sag and the strength of the entire structure will be at risk.

If you plan to manufacture racks or multi-tiered shelves, then it is best to use stationary structures or those that are located closer to the floor.

Probably, each of the men who acquired a garage faced the problem of storing the necessary things and tools. They always dangle underfoot, and some are even impossible to find. In order to save space in a small room and thereby organize and put into place all the tools and not only, they came up with shelves and racks for the garage. They can be made the way you want, and as it will be convenient for you, even for the entire wall, at least two walls, or you can attach one shelf. There are even options for ceiling shelves.

However, such shelves are not safe, but sometimes only they can fit like a garage. It is best, of course, to dwell on the classic options. In addition, do-it-yourself garage shelves will last much longer, looking at them and using them will be doubly pleasant.

The material for the shelving is either wood or metal. Wooden shelves are partially not disassembled, they are attached with bolts, screws and studs. Such racks are attached to the wall and they do not belong to the movement. The second type of shelving is welded. They are completely non-separable due to the fact that all metal parts are welded together. Collapsible racks can also be made of metal. They are fastened with special bolts, but such structures can hardly be called stable, because the so-called backlash is formed during assembly. To achieve greater stability and rigidity, they are fixed to the walls. This is done very simply. A plate with metal holes is attached to the outer shelves or welded onto it, and a so-called "crutch" is inserted into it. Before placing the crutch, you need to drill a hole at the level of the plate in the wall itself with a diameter smaller than the hole in the plate.

Both types of shelving structures have good statistics in terms of service life, but for some reason the main choice falls on welded racks. Collapsible racks are selected for specific cases, there are several of them. In the first, the possibility of moving to another garage is not excluded, and it is very difficult to transfer a huge non-separable structure to another garage, and if it is also far away, it is very difficult, since such racks by weight can reach several tons. Partial removal will greatly facilitate the task of transporting the rack. The second case involves the absence of a welding machine, unless, of course, the rack is made by hand at home. In general, almost everyone chooses welded racks, especially if the collector has experience in working with a welding machine, because then the work will move much faster, and welded racks are particularly stable and strong.

Trading market presents its own version of shelving. A certain type of rack is on sale, which is made of corners and grooves. They are quite stable and easy to use, besides, besides the fact that they can be disassembled, there is also a small function for rearranging the shelves. Thus, you can arrange the shelves at the desired height. Seemingly perfect shelving, what could be even better. However, their price is very disappointing. Since they are sky-high.

The very design of the shelving is not complicated. There are a few basic parts to a rack structure:

  • Racks;
  • Crossbeams;
  • Shelves.

There are cases when transverse steel struts are welded diagonally along the extreme racks on the rear wall of the rack. Such measures are used to achieve increased durability by compensating for lateral loads.

The size and height of the rack and shelves is determined by the expected items that will be stored on it. The main thing is to observe the required distance between the racks, which are in the same section. This distance directly depends on the stability and rigidity of the material from which the rack is constructed. In any case, the shelves should in no case bend under the load that you plan to give it. If you are not going to load your rack too much, then the distance between the spans can be made no more than 2 meters, but with heavy loads it is best to leave up to 1.5 meters and no more. If you have planned to make a rack along the entire length of the wall and it is really an ordinary size, then when assembling the rack it is imperative to weld intermediate racks and the distance between spans should also not reach more than 2 meters.

It is imperative to say about the shelves of the rack, more precisely about their height. The first shelf from the bottom should be 50-70 centimeters from the floor and, as a rule, this shelf is made with the heaviest things. Subsequent shelves are made at any convenient height, but for example, a 30 cm shelf height will not be practical and not entirely convenient, but 35-37 cm is already much better, by the way, it is this height that is considered standard. You can check the required height with a 1.5 liter plastic bottle... It should calmly stand between the shelves and be removed in the same way. Just by centimeters, this is how it turns out, and it is this height that is standard and convenient for operation.

As you may have read above, there are not so many materials for shelving - wood and metal. Of course, it is easier to work with wood, and in terms of weight they are not very heavy, but the main disadvantage of wooden shelves is their inability to withstand large mass... As for the metal ones, they weigh tons, but they are also able to hold even a hippopotamus, unless, of course, all the assembly and welding of the racks were carried out correctly and according to the instructions.

Undoubtedly, the main aspect is also the price. If you buy metal material for shelving in retail chains, then the cost will turn out to be almost the same if you bought a ready-made shelf. But there is an option of buying material on metal bases. They sell metal whips in sizes from 6 to 12 meters. The next step will be cutting metal whips into the required lengths according to the specified length. This can be done directly at the metal base, but you will have to pay extra for such a service, but the price for it is not too high. This way, you can save almost 20 to 30 percent of your expenses.

Materials made of wood differ significantly in cost from metal. But do not think that you can save a lot by making a wooden one instead of a metal rack. As a rule, racks are made of elite and premium wood, and they are, to put it mildly, not cheap.

As you know, garage conditions are not the best, especially for wooden structures. Constant temperature drops, humidity, dampness, frost, heat all have a very detrimental effect on wood material... If you want your wooden shelving served you for at least a couple of years, it is imperative to treat the material with special protective, antibacterial agents. It is better to buy wood processing compounds for outdoor use, since these conditions are very similar to those in a garage that does not have heating. At will, such compositions are also selected that tint the tree, and subsequently it will not need painting. Work with the processed material can only be done after final drying.

Let's see how to make do-it-yourself shelves in the garage from wood:

All parts of the wood shelving are joined by the quarter or half-leg method, which is common for carpenters. If this method is beyond your power, then you can nail the bars joint, butt. But with such a connection, it is necessary to use corners and overhead metal plates to increase stability. The elements of the rack are fastened on nails, but when using corners and overhead plates, fastening with self-tapping screws is also possible.

The dimensions of the racks in the standard are taken 50 to 50 millimeters. The crossbars can be made from exactly the same bar, only slightly smaller in size - 50 by 30 millimeters. For laying you need:

  • Planks not less than 21 millimeters thick;
  • Plywood resistant to moisture in a thickness of 10 millimeters;
  • Laminated chipboard;
  • Oriented strand board (OSB).

Planks and plywood are cheaper at cost. From more expensive material it seems laminated chipboard, but its huge advantage is that it does not need a systematic and indeed painting. In order not to spend large sums, you can buy materials at sawmill bases, where they are sold in packs and their cost is much different from new ones. The only drawback of such a purchase is that the materials may be scratched.

There is one more little nuance. Shelves from Chipboard material have a side cut and, if moisture gets on them, can swell and crumble. To avoid this trouble, you need to process the sections with silicone.

If your choice fell on metallic look shelving, there is, from what materials to choose. There are two versions, from which you can make both shelves and rack racks, there are also standard materials with which to create "warehouses". Metallic materials intended for other purposes can also be used, for example, cable ducts and rack cables, which are originally used in communications.

What materials are needed to create a metal frame:

  • Metal corner 3-4 mm thick. The shelves from the corner should be 25-40 centimeters wide, but you need to take into account the amount of loads that will be carried out in the future;
  • You can also take profile pipes. They are less susceptible to deformation and are very difficult to twist or bend. And in comparison with corners, profile pipes are more elastic. The required pipe sizes for racks are from about 40 by 40 millimeters and up to 50 by 50 millimeters, for crossbeams from 40 by 25 millimeters and up to 50 by 25 millimeters;
  • Profile pipes designed for racks, but the crossbars are made from corners. In thickness, the metal should be 2-3 millimeters, the width of the shelves starts from 25 millimeters and above. The corners should be unfolded by laying the flooring, something like a nest;

After the construction of the frame, flooring is needed. It is made from exactly the same materials as when forming wooden shelving. Chipboard, OSB, plywood, board are taken and cut to the right size... Some people make flooring not only from wood, but also resort to very non-standard way- sheet metal. In wooden structures, this method is not supported due to the high mass of this material, but it is very realistic to lay it on a metal frame.

The most standard and basic flooring material is still a good old plank. The most reliable and also inexpensive flooring. For such purposes, floorboards are taken (they have a minimum number of burrs), their thickness should be from 21 millimeters. Necessarily treated with antiseptic and protective equipment to prevent wood swelling from moisture and other external influences. If desired, you can paint the wooden shelves.

The advantage of metal shelves is that they are able to withstand heavy loads, although they have a fairly low thickness, there are also disadvantages and this is a very loud sound during operation, the shelves can rust and because of this they need to be sanded and painted very often. By the way, the metal frame also needs to be processed and painted so that rust does not appear.

Several features during the assembly of metal shelving

Metal racks have two assembly options. The first is to weld necessary parts using a welding machine, and the second is bolted to each part. At the expense of the welding method, as for me there are no questions, but with the bolts it is already a little more complicated. When cooking, where corners are used, they are welded with an overlap of 5 millimeters. After laying out the shelves, such a small difference will not be noticed at all. There is an option of welding after cutting off the excess part of the corner and butt joint, but in this case it will take a lot of time to trim the excess parts of the corner.

But with the bolts, everything is different. First you need to connect the side parts with the shelves, and only then attach them to the rest of the frame. To connect, you need to screw in two bolts, this will help to achieve greater stability.

There is a classic, or rather a factory version of a shelf (stand) for tools. Buy perforated a metal sheet, on which all the necessary tools are hung. The only drawback of such a stand is the cost.

Do not despair! Of course, there are many ideas that you can do at home with your own hands, and here are some of them:

  • You need to take a board, chipboard, or plywood, mark it with the desired color on it for each tool that will hang there, and hammer nails or screw in self-tapping screws. Not a bad option, moreover, it is done quickly, but not very beautiful and elegant, but it is convenient and made it myself;
  • If you have nowhere to fold a heavier tool, for example, large keys or wrenches, you can take a mesh, screw it to the wall and weld the required hooks from the wire. Uncomplicated and easy option and a way to quickly get out of a difficult situation;

There are many such examples, and they are all taken from life. Everyone twists and comes up with their own original ideas that many people soon begin to use. Such stands for tools can be made from almost any material that is at hand. Include imagination and create, because any thing made with your own hands is the fruit of creativity.

It is impossible to imagine a garage without a shelving unit. It saves space, allows you to compactly arrange tools, parts, any household belongings. And all this will be in plain sight and within seconds.

Of course, you can buy ready-made racks, but it's much more pleasant to do everything yourself.

Besides, self-assembly allows you to assemble a structure that will perfectly match the size of the garage, your needs and aesthetic preferences.

Before you roll up your sleeves, it will not be superfluous to familiarize yourself with the theoretical background.

According to the method of installation, stationary, collapsible and mobile racks are distinguished.

By the material of manufacture - wood, metal, plastic, combined. In the garage, structures made of wood and steel are most often found, the former are cheaper and easier to homemade assembly, the latter are stronger and more durable.

As for the size, the number of shelves, then one should proceed from individual capabilities and needs. General rule- the more, the more capacious, the better.

If you are just going to build a garage, we advise you to familiarize yourself with how, and also look towards more simple option, namely to the side, which can also be with different materials.

If you want to do everything yourself?

It is best to assemble the structure from steel. It will cost more, it will take longer to mess around, but it will also serve your grandchildren.

The advantages of a metal rack are:

Now let's take a closer look at the sequence of work on assembling racks:

Wood shelving is cheaper, easier to assemble, but limited in strength and lifespan.

And the tree also requires more attention. It all starts with the choice of material. The most affordable is pine, but its strength is very low.

It is good if you can get an oak or other hard species.

The wood must be dry, free from mold and mildew, wormholes, knots and cracks.

For vertical racks, you need a beam - 100x100 or 100x50.

For crossbars, you can also use a bar, only a smaller section, or even take a board.

The shelves themselves are board or chipboard. The general course of assembly with your own hands is the same as in the case of metal.

But there are a number of differences:

Another disadvantage of wood is that it is difficult to assemble normal collapsible racks from it. Therefore, if you intend to often change the position of the structure in the garage or transport it, then it is more advisable to use a metal frame, and make only shelves from wood, especially if they are made loose.

Naturally, a prefabricated rack cannot be made by welding, it can only be screwed together.

Cost and time spent on self-assembly

If there is all necessary tool, then all the work - from taking measurements to fixing - will take only a few hours, it is quite possible to keep within two days.

Let's take it step by step:

There are two snags: you can waste time waiting for the metal to be delivered from the base, and you still have to wait for the primer and paint to dry.

If not for this, then it would be possible to cope in one day.

The cost is also quite democratic.

The table shows an approximate calculation of the cost of materials for a metal rack with a height of 2 m, a width of 4 m, a depth of 50 cm, a shelf width - 1 m, the number of shelves - 4.

Add to this the cost of paint, primer, welding electrodes or screwing screws.

However, if you remember that this item will last for decades, then the costs are fully justified.

Material Price Quantity Sum
Oak beams 100x100 500r / running meter 10m 5000r
Oak beams 100x50 23r / running meter 42m 966 RUR
Oak board 30mm 140r / m 2 10m 2 1400 rub
Total 7300

As you can see, wooden is not much cheaper. Although you can take a cheaper pine tree and it will turn out to be much more economical.
