  • dowels;
  • polyurethane foam.

Repair stages

You can often cope with the problem by buying new door trims.

Sagging

The sagging interior door causes a lot of inconvenience. She scratches the floor and constantly gets stuck in the opening. However, you can fix such a defect as follows:

  • First you need to check the mount door hinges... Most often, sagging occurs due to the fact that the hinges are loose.
  • If the hinges are really loose, you only need to tighten them.
  • If the hinges are well reinforced, but the door still sags, then they can be deepened a little. To do this, remove the hinges with the door leaf and chisel to increase the depth of the groove. Then all that remains is to re-screw the hinges onto the screws.

  • If the sagging occurs due to a violation of the geometry of the door leaf, then it is necessary to return it to its correct shape. To do this, use a plane to process the timber strapping. Swollen doors are handled in the same way.

Doors do not close well

  1. Sometimes the doors do not close because the door leaf is swollen from contact with a damp surface or because of the increased humidity in the atmosphere in the room. In this case, the defect can be eliminated by processing the strapping with a conventional planer. For prevention, it is better to prevent moisture from entering the door surface.
  2. When closed, doors can form a significant gap with the frame. Before repairing interior doors, you need to make sure that the shape of the door leaf fits perfectly to the box. Such slits usually indicate that the canvas is much smaller in size. To eliminate the opening, it is necessary to fill a rail on the door frame. When the rail is secured, it is processed with a plane and adjusted to fit the door. After that, you can paint.

Desiccation

Interior doors are usually made of wood. This material is subject to various influences environment... It can swell, crack, and shrink.

The easiest way to restore dry doors is with metal corners. This is usually how old wooden doors are repaired. However, corners can break appearance constructions. Therefore, it is better to use a different method.

To restore the doors, they must be dismantled. The doors are removed from the hinges and completely disassembled. All components of the structure are carefully processed with a special adhesive composition... The canvas is put in order, masking cracks and dry spots. The glued doors must be clamped in the clips and wait until they dry. Then the canvas is again hung on the hinges in the door frame.

Cracks

To repair cracks and delaminated areas, you will need good glue and press. As a press, you can use any heavy object that can press the canvas from above. The adhesive composition can fill in various defects and voids on the canvas.

If there are deep cracks in the door, then sawdust and varnish should be used. Sawdust perfectly conceals such damage.

Installing a new door

Interior doors can serve for a long time without repair. To do this, you just need to regularly monitor them and properly look after them. All cracks and delamination can be prevented. It is known that such defects in wood tend to grow over time. Therefore, the sooner a small crack is detected and eliminated, the more likely it will not ruin the door leaf.

If the door is very old or has many defects, it is sometimes cheaper to buy a new one than to repair it.

  1. First of all, you need to remove the canvas from the hinges.
  2. Then the old one is carefully removed with a pry bar. door block.
  3. Now you need to deal with the new door. It is more convenient to purchase interior doors already assembled. It gets rid of additional work... If the structure is disassembled, then it must be assembled, carefully fitting all the components to each other.
  4. The hinges are installed at a distance of 20 cm from the top and bottom.
  5. The next step is to install the lock. The work is carried out using a chisel and drills. The height of the castle will be optimal if it is located one meter from the floor.
  6. The installation of the door frame should be carried out strictly according to the level. After installation, it is necessary to foam all the openings between the wall and the box. Platbands can only be attached when the foam is dry.
  7. When the foam has dried, you can remove the excess. After that, the door trims are installed.

For installation, you will need chisels, drills, dowels and screws, a water level, polyurethane foam, wedges, and a pry bar. This is the minimum set of materials and fixtures. If the door is assembled at home, then more tools will be needed. It is better to purchase fittings together with the door. When buying, it is better to check its quality in advance. It should be remembered that cheap interior doors often have fragile fittings.

Very often, locks on interior doors start to work intermittently, or even break altogether. The cause of breakdowns can be very different. Therefore, if you want to repair the lock, then you should determine the reason for which it failed. Below are the most common causes of breakdowns:

  • part of the broken key remained in the well or debris got into it;
  • the spring or crossbars have become unusable;
  • insufficient lubrication due to which the lock is difficult to open;
  • the holes and the bolt do not match in the bar;
  • the key turns, but does not open the lock;
  • the cylinders are seized;
  • loose hinges.

As a rule, the mechanism for locking interior doors is simple, so it is quite possible to repair it yourself.

So, for repairs, the following basic set of tools may be required:

  • screwdriwer set;
  • oil for lubrication;
  • Toothbrush;
  • tweezers;
  • kerosene.

Before proceeding with the repair, make sure that the breakage is actually in the lock mechanism.

Often the reason that the lock does not close or sticks is the skew of the door frame. In such cases, it is enough to adjust the alignment of the lining on the frame with the lock bolt or with the latch tab and everything will work properly.

In some cases, wear on the hinges can cause the deadbolt to jam.

If this is not the problem, you will need to remove the cylinder. Its performance check is not checked in the lock. If it breaks down, then it just needs to be changed to a new one. But there are times when the locking mechanism works properly. In this case, the malfunction should be looked for in the lock case. To disassemble the body of the patch lock, it must be removed.

If you have a mortise, then first unscrew the fixing screw of the core, insert the key into it and pull out the core by turning it. Only then can you remove the lock case. There are small screws on the case cover. When you unscrew them, do not lose them, put them aside. In order not to lose the spring, put the lock on a small flap. When you disassemble the case cover, you remove the accumulated dust and dirt from the lock. Also make sure all parts are intact and not deformed.

If, after all the manipulations, you assembled the lock, and it does not work anyway, then it’s time to completely change it by purchasing a new lock for the interior door.

The interior handle is exposed to great stress. Especially if you have small children, their breakage can be a frequent occurrence, due to rolling on the doors, catching on the handle, although there are other reasons for the breakdown of interior handles.

Consider the most frequent problems that arise during the operation of an interior door:

  • Handle sticks. When you push the handle, you feel resistance. To open the door you have to make an effort, and sometimes also pull the door handle.
  • Latch sticks. This breakage is found in the construction of handles with a lock. The movement of the crossbars is impeded both when opening and closing.
  • Loose handle. In this case, sagging is observed, the handle itself moves away from the canvas and staggers. With such a breakdown, there may also be a loosening of the entire locking mechanism.
  • The handle does not return to its position after being pressed. During normal operation, the handle should instantly spring back to its original position.
  • The tongue does not move. The tongue will either sink in or fail.

All these breakdowns can be fixed on your own at home. For this, it is important to know the varieties of the product:

  • Stationary. Such models are rarely used today. Handles "buttons" or "staples" are simply screwed to the door leaf.
  • Press. This model has a push mechanism. To hide the tongue, the mechanism must be pressed on it and moved down.
  • Swivel. This model uses round handles. To open such doors, the handle must be turned to one side.

Moreover, it is important to know constituent elements handle mechanism:

  • Lock. The main element is the deadbolt.
  • Square pin. It is brought out. The pin drives interior connecting with the handle.
  • Lever. A handle that is subjected to force to open the door.
  • Decorative overlay. Gives the door an attractive appearance.
  • Reply part. It is located on the door frame. There are holes in it, into which the fallopian tongue goes.

So, if the handle has some damage, then if you deal with all these details, the repair can be done on your own.

The most common failure is a lack of lubricant. It is very easy to fix this problem. Disassemble the handle and apply lubricant. You can drip oil on the bolt for sewing machines and then turn the knob several times. By doing this, you can completely prevent the handle from squeaking or jamming. Moreover, the lubricant will increase the service life. Sometimes it is necessary to tighten the fastening screws and also to correct the fittings. This is in case the handle lock is loosened.

If this is not enough, then it will be necessary to disassemble the product. To do this, remove decorative strip... There are fastening bolts under it, which must be unscrewed. After that, you can get to the inside of the mechanism. It is not necessary to retrieve it. Now look at the key washer and torsion spring. The retaining ring must be removed to view the washer. This mechanism is often the problem. As for the spring, it drives the tongue. Make sure these items are intact and free from defects. Perhaps the spring will be out of place, it is enough just to correct it.

If after that it was not possible to determine the problem, then the entire mechanism will have to be completely removed from the door leaf. If broken elements are found, then they must be completely changed. When assembling the lock, be sure to install the parts in the same order as they were disassembled. If the breakdown cannot be eliminated in any way, then it may be necessary to call a wizard or completely replace the opening mechanism.

Whatever the glass, the problem with it may be only it is broken or chipped. Therefore, the glass should be replaced. If you decide to make the replacement yourself, then you should determine the method of its installation, and there are 2 of them:

  1. Fastening with glazing beads.
  2. Installation of glass inside the door leaf.

Consider the technology of replacing glass, which is fixed with glazing beads. So, the work looks like this:

  • Carefully remove the glazing beads. To do this, take a flat screwdriver and drive with a sharp tip into the gap between the glazing bead and the blade near the nail. You can also use a thick-bladed knife for this job.
  • After that, the screwdriver should be slightly bent or turned. As a result, the glazing bead must move away from the canvas. Next, you should do this operation with each nail on the glazing bead. After that, remove the glazing bead with pliers.

First of all, remove the side glazing beads, after the lower and at the very end of the upper. By following this sequence, you will be able to avoid the glass falling out. If the glass is broken, then the order in which the glazing beads are removed does not matter.

  • Then carefully remove the damaged glass.
  • The opening where the glass stood should be cleaned of debris.
  • Then take measurements. Do not cut the glass exactly to size, as moisture can swell the doors and break the glass.
  • If you have the necessary tools, you can cut the glass yourself. If not, go to a workshop to cut the glass.

If desired, a film with a pattern can be glued to the glass. This will make the glass much stronger. In this case, the film should be glued to an uninstalled glass. When the film is glued, the glass is set in place and fixed with staples. As you can see, the technology is quite simple.

If the glass is inserted inside the door, then its replacement becomes more difficult. In this case, the replacement is made in this way:

  • As a rule, in all new doors, glass is inserted into the canvas from above. Therefore, to replace the glass, the door will have to be disassembled.
  • To do this, remove the door from its hinges.
  • After that, find special plugs on the end of the door. Under them are self-tapping screws that fix the protective cover. carefully unscrew them and dismantle the cover.
  • And only after such manipulations, you can get to the glass.
  • The damaged glass is removed.
  • When performing this work, it is necessary not to spoil the seal, which is in the groove. A seal is necessary so that the glass does not rattle when opening / closing, and because of this, it can break.
  • To avoid spoiling them, grease the edges of the glass. soapy water... Then the glass will be much lighter in place.
  • After installation, fix the cover in place, tighten the screws and close them with plugs.
  • At the end of the work, install the doors in place.

A few tips for repairing doors in the following video:

Sections of the article:

Sometimes interior doors fail or lose their original appearance. In some cases, it is much easier to change them than to repair them, since repairs can result in a large waste of money. Replacing interior wooden doors is not always advisable, especially in cases where the old doors were quite expensive and were of good quality.

To make a decision, it is necessary to weigh all the pros and cons in favor of replacing or repairing doors based on many criteria, it is necessary to take into account both the amount of available funds and the complexity of the restoration work. Our article will tell you how to repair the door in case of some breakdown, or loss with a "marketable" appearance. Consider the main methods of repair and ways to eliminate deficiencies.

Repair of the canvas

A common problem is that the canvas does not close properly, it touches the box. This may be due to the fact that the wood from which the door is made swelled, expanded in size. Reason - high humidity indoors, or the banal old age of the canvas. As a result - the deformation of the box with the inability to close the door.

Repair with such a breakdown is quite simple. First of all, you need to understand which part of the door frame is deformed. To do this, you should study the gaps between the door frame and the canvas. If the gap is significant, the point is in the rack, which is located on the opposite side of the gap. Another one possible reason malfunctions - canopies fixed with self-tapping screws. In order to bring them back to their original state, it is necessary to tighten them deeper.

In order to eliminate the above malfunction, two main methods have been invented.

The first one is suitable for cases when the canvas rubs against the rack of the box. In the case when the door still closes, but with some effort, renovation work it is quite possible to produce it yourself. To do this, it is necessary to deepen the planting of the awnings. The canvas is removed from the hinges that are unscrewed from the box. Then, using a chisel, the attachment points are deepened a few millimeters. After that, the awnings and the door are installed in place. As a rule, this procedure allows you to completely eliminate all problems.

The second way is to intentionally deform the rack of the box. To do this, it is necessary to remove the platbands, to free the cavities from filling. Then the door closes, the place where the canvas touches the box is determined. Using a drill, a hole is drilled from the inside of the box. With the help of a punch, another hole is drilled through the previously drilled hole from the end of the opening.

A block of wood is taken, installed between the racks and the box is wedged, and a self-tapping screw is inserted into the hole. After removing the spacer, during normal operation of the door, everything returns to its place, and the gaps are foamed.

There is a third option in order to solve the problem of lapping the canvas, but it is not recommended to use it. It consists in reducing the size of the door leaf by trimming it. It is better to cut from the hinge side, but the appearance of the product can be permanently damaged.

Restoration of appearance

Restoring doors to their original appearance is a laborious process that requires quite serious efforts. In order to restore the appearance of the door structure, you first need to dismantle the door leaf. If the repair is required small, cosmetic, you can do without removing the canvas and eliminate the imperfections on the fixed door.

So, if the damage is minor (there are small scratches, chips, and other defects in the coating), the door needs to be sanded. First of all, the surface is putty, and only then it is sanded. The damaged area is cleaned of dirt, removed from it upper layer... Then putty is used, the excess of which, after drying, is removed from the surface of the canvas sandpaper.

If the damage is serious, it is impossible to restore the door without removing the door leaf from the hinges. The recovery process is quite complicated and requires a lot of concentration of efforts. First of all, you need to remove the old paintwork doors. It can be removed both mechanically and chemically. Mechanical is preferred.

In this case, put on the drill special attachments with which you can grind the surface. Chemical method is not safe. The charm mechanical method in the fact that simultaneously with grinding the surface, it restores its original appearance. At the end of the sanding process, a new decorative coating is applied to the door.

Repair of veneer and laminate doors

Damage to the leaf can be of a different nature, depending on what the door is made of. If the doors are made of veneer or laminate, the top layer may peel off or scratches. In this case, no amount of putty will help. These types of doors have their own methods of restoration.

If the top decorative layer of the surface peels off, this is not a very terrible problem. You can simply glue it back using super glue, or in another way: a sheet of paper is used through which the damaged element is ironed with an iron, and then the paper is pressed against the surface of the door with a rag.

Chips, like scratches or cracks, can also be repaired. To do this, you should purchase a special pencil for removing damage. It is made on the basis of wax and can be of various colors. It must be kneaded to a uniform consistency, and then applied to the canvas with a spatula. After it has hardened, polishing with felt is necessary.

Repairing cracks on wood surfaces

The restoration is quite complicated and painstaking. However, the result of removing cracks from interior wooden doors exceeds expectations.
Let's analyze the process step by step:

  • Removing the canvas from the hinges, followed by its location on a flat surface in a horizontal position;
  • Removal of the outer coating, which is carried out using solvent and sandpaper;
  • Sanding the surface with sandpaper or grinder;
  • If the canvas has large cracks, they are removed with a putty, selected in accordance with the color of the surface;
  • After the surface has dried, it is necessary to re-grind the canvas;
  • Once the sanding process is complete, the surface must be primed and varnished.

Glass replacement

The presence of a glass insert is a definite plus for the door. Such doors look beautiful and interesting. Unfortunately, not all types of glass are reliable enough; some of them may break under mechanical stress. If such a situation has occurred, it is quite possible to replace the glass with your own hands.

To do this, it is necessary to remove the glass element from the canvas. To do this, loosen the fasteners that hold the glass insert. As a rule, the bindings are made of wood. After that, you need to wrap your hands with a rag so as not to damage them, and remove the remaining pieces of glass.

On some door structures an additional rubber protective insert is installed, which must be removed. If it is not damaged, you can use it later.

In case the glass is rectangular, you just need to order glass of the same size from a specialized workshop. Figured glass can also be ordered, however, a redrawing of the drawing, made with unsurpassed accuracy, is required.

Before inserting new glass, it is better to remove the sheet. This will save you from the possibility of damage to new glass in case of accidental damage. In addition, weight lifting is not very easy.

Silicone glue is applied to the glass, and then a rubber gasket is inserted, after which the structure is fixed with a glazing bead.

Repair of sliding doors

V modern houses can be found more and more often sliding doors... As a rule, they are installed in order to save space. Various hardware components can easily fail and must be replaced from time to time.

The main breakdowns include heavy door opening, rollers jumping out of the guides, and loosening of fasteners.

If the matter is in the rollers, you can try to clean them or replace them. To do this, the door is removed from the guides, and the rollers are cleaned and lubricated, or replaced, and then the blade is installed in place. If the fasteners are loose, it is necessary to fasten its elements more tightly.

If repair is not possible

If the door cannot be repaired for a number of reasons, it must be replaced. It is much easier than repairing one or another structural elements doors. In order to change the door, you need to remove the canvas, dismantle the box with a crowbar. After that, the installation site is cleared of various debris and the opening is measured.

As you acquire a new door, it will be necessary to install fittings on it, and then proceed with the installation of the box.

The box is installed using a level, and after installation, the remaining hollow spaces between the wall are foamed. Platbands are fixed only after the polyurethane foam has dried. Next, the canvas is hung on the hinges.

So, if the door requires repair, in most cases the procedure can be successfully completed on your own. How to do this must be decided depending on the type of breakdown that has occurred. If you want to decorative renovation, it is possible to update the interior wooden doors or any other doors in the above described ways. In the event of a hardware failure, it can be easily replaced with a similar one, and in some cases it is repaired. The main thing is to approach the issue wisely and then the result will not disappoint.

    • Then remove the parts of the hinges that are located on door frame.
    • To install new hinges, it is most convenient to use the places from the old ones. If they need to be installed in a new place, make a corresponding recess with a chisel.
    • Mark and drill holes for screws, having previously measured for this distance from the top and bottom of the box to the top and bottom hinges. In this case, it is important to check the horizontal alignment of the hinges with a square or level.
    • Transfer the dimensions to the door leaf and screw the counterparts of the hinges to it, if you are using "left" or "right" hinges. If you use universal hinges, then it is advisable to fix them on the door frame and attach the door leaf - in this case, inconsistencies will be visible immediately.

    • It remains to screw on the handles - and you're done.

Modern doors are made of different materials, most prevail composite materials... The cost of such a new door will be several times cheaper than a wooden one, so many people prefer new ones. But only a few people think that by throwing the old wooden door into the trash heap, a new one is being installed, which will last literally several years. Before starting work, you must carefully examine all the interior doors in the room. If the renovation is fresh, it's time to put all the doors in order.

    We competently plan the order of work:

    1. First you need to process the door and remove the old coating. If you notice cracks and scratches on the door leaf, the door itself "looks askance", then you will have to remove the door from its hinges and eliminate all defects.
    2. Removing the top coat. To complete this stage of work, you will need special tools. But before starting work, you need to remove the latch and handles. In general, it is advisable to update the fittings, because over the years of operation, they also fail, the surface is scratched and darkens.
    3. If the door is with glass, then the insert must be carefully removed: unscrew the fasteners, remove the glazing beads. Place the glass in a safe place.
    4. Now we start removing the top layer of the coating. For these works it will come in handy construction hair dryer to warm up the surface. You will also need a narrow spatula to remove the top layer.
    5. You need to work slowly, warming up small area removing the soft paint with a spatula. You can also replace the construction hair dryer with another tool: if there is a grinder in the arsenal, then it is enough to insert a coarse-grained circle and you can process the surface much faster. With the help of a grinder, you can remove not only the old coating (paint or varnish), but also sand the surface at the same time, get rid of dents and small bumps.
    6. After processing the top layer of the door leaf, you will see all the connecting elements - these are wooden dowels. If you plan to do a thorough repair of interior doors with your own hands, then you need to disassemble the door. Wooden fixings knocked out with a soft tool (rubber mallet), the door is disassembled into elements.
    7. Now you can think about how to better clean the door surface. It is quite enough just to walk along the door leaf with a fine-grained sandpaper nozzle and thoroughly polish all the places.
    8. While working, do not forget that a thin layer of wood is removed step by step, so if you cleaned it with 100 grain sandpaper, change the nozzle, then you need to clean it with 200 grit sandpaper and so on, gradually reducing the grain size.
    9. The work is done, you can reassemble the door in the reverse order and connect all the parts. What the professionals advise: throw away the old glazing beads and install new ones, purchase new fittings and glue each element additionally at the place of attachment with PVA glue.

    A small clarification: if you have done a good job, the door has been updated, there is a lot of wood dust (after cleaning with sandpaper), then you need to carefully collect it and make a putty yourself. Wood dust must be placed in a small container, add a little PVA glue, dilute to the consistency of thick sour cream or even a little thicker. It is necessary to store such a putty in a tightly closed container.

    How to putty grooves and crevices:

    • preparation of the door leaf: old paint or varnish is peeled off, the surface is polished with an emery cloth;
    • to fill in the grooves and cracks, you need to apply a homemade paste to the damaged areas, rub in well, leave for a day. When the restored places are dry, clean with a fine-grained sandpaper.

    Repair of interior doors in the bedroom. How to apply a new coating

    Most of the work is behind us - now we can talk about how to properly apply the new coat. It can be either ordinary paint or varnish. In the event that you like doors to be painted with paint, then the most the best way is to buy a can of white enamel without shine, and for tinting pay attention to a wide palette of shades of "Belinka" tinting paint.

    Advice for choosing paint: choose not liquid, so that there are no problems with staining. For work you need a regular brush, you can use a roller. The paint must be mixed with the tint paint to achieve the desired shade.

    Staining procedure:

    1. Pour the diluted paint into a small jar, pick up with a brush.
    2. We paint over the door leaf in 2 layers: the first layer is applied along the fibers, we wait for it to dry.
    3. The second layer is also applied along the grain. Sometimes one layer is enough. Look at the situation.
    4. Experts advise: apply the paint in several layers, allowing each layer to dry thoroughly. For this, at least 24 hours are allotted, then the surface is sanded with fine-grained sandpaper (2000 units), the next layer of paint or varnish is applied again.
    5. Thus, you can achieve perfect coverage... This is especially true if you have planned to cover the door leaf with transparent varnish.

    There is another way to apply paint:

    1. Surface preparation, then applying paint in several layers with a break for drying each layer (up to 24 hours).
    2. Then the freshly painted surface is smoothed with fine-grain sandpaper to level the surface.
    3. Next - toning in the desired color. If you use a special paint, then you need to be as careful as possible in applying, because the paint is very rare when compared with ordinary paint... Therefore, the material must be applied in small batches so that there are no drips.
    4. The paint is applied with a brush in several layers (the drying time is at least 6 hours). To obtain an even shade and an even layer, 2 applications are enough. Thus, you can achieve the desired shade and beautiful shine.
