Deciding how to make a fence made of wood. A fence made of a wooden picket fence: photos of beautiful options, prices, installation How to make a fence from a picket fence correctly

More than one territory does not do without the presence of a fence. These are not necessarily high and impregnable walls. Metal posts around a supermarket parking lot or hedge from the bush in the park are also artificially created obstacles, the task of which is not only the outline of the boundaries of the site, but also the separation of zones of use.

The most versatile and affordable of these fences for centuries have been wood products. Not only availability, but also ease of processing, durability, environmental friendliness made wood an indispensable material in any construction. A fence made of a wooden picket fence with their own hands can currently be built by any man, having at his disposal a minimum of tools.

All wooden fences are subdivided into deaf and translucent. It is just translucent structures that are called a wooden picket fence. There are many varieties of them. According to the main differences, a wooden picket fence can be divided into the following types:

1. By the location of the rails

  • Unilateral
  • Bilateral

2. By type of installation

  • Horizontal
  • Vertical

3. On laying the picket fence

  • Palisade
  • Convex (one-sided and two-sided)
  • Concave (one-sided and two-sided)
  • Cat ears
  • Peak

These are only the most popular types of installation, in practice you can also find barriers with mixed methods of stuffing elements, and with the use of additional decorations in the form of rhombuses, carved inserts, combinations with other materials, etc.

Material calculation and tool preparation

Acquisition of all materials requires careful calculation. After all, there will simply be nowhere to put the surplus, and the money will already be spent on them. The shortage will entail the need for additional trips to hardware stores and the selection of a tree similar in texture, species and quality of sawn wood. Moreover, it will be very problematic to buy this material in compliance with all the listed parameters.

1. So, the first thing to be determined is the height of the fence. The frequency of the installed pillars will directly depend on it. After all, the heavier the sections, the more often you need to put the pillars. Usually, they are installed every 2-3 meters to a depth of 1 meter. Based on these parameters, you can calculate how much material is needed for the supports.

2. A wooden picket fence for a fence includes the picket fence itself and the bars (another name for them are slugs or veins), to which it will be attached. It is necessary to take into account when calculating:

  • A picket fence will be mounted on one or both sides
  • How wide the planks will be and at what interval they will be installed
  • The length and number of veins that will be attached to the posts

The size of a wooden picket fence for a fence can be from 3 to 25 cm in width, up to 2 meters in height. The legs, ideally, should have a length that is a multiple of the distance between the posts, so that their joints fall just on the support body.

3. From the necessary tool you will need:

  • Tools for digging holes (shovels or yamobur)
  • Means for screwing self-tapping screws (screwdriver or screwdriver)
  • Equipment for sawing wood and cutting metal (hacksaw, grinder with different discs and attachments, jigsaw)
  • Concrete mixing devices (concrete mixer or hoe with trough)
  • Containers for transferring slag, stones, water and mortar
  • Brushes, trays, rags for painting
  • Level, threads, marker

Selection and preparation of material

Wood species

Having picked up a suitable type of laying of the elements of the future structure, you need to start acquiring the material. There are many types of wood. Each region has its own, more or less affordable both in terms of availability and in terms of price of the breed. There are elite types of wood that have a high cost, regardless of the place of purchase, but they can also be used to build a fence. It should be noted that, in addition to the price, the density of the wood should be taken into account.

Not every expensive brand will necessarily be durable for outdoor use. Therefore, if the remedy is allowed, it is better to purchase an oak. The most classic and most acceptable will be the choice of one of the conifers... Such wood, due to the content of resin in its structure, will not rot for a long time, and the price, for example, for a pine board, is almost everywhere at the lowest rates. For the material of the supports, except for wood, metal or concrete is suitable.

Preliminary processing

The fence consists of posts and intermediate sections. Preparatory work include:

Rack processing

In the described structure, the supports can be used, both from wood, from metal or concrete. The latter do not require any special preparation before use. Wooden racks need to be coated, and the part that will be buried or concreted and the upper end should be covered with bitumen mastic. Metallic load-bearing elements you always need to cover a minimum with a primer, and best of all, also paint. The end, which will face the sky, should be welded with an iron plate, cleaned and also covered with anti-corrosion materials.

Span preparation

All the planks and bars that will be components hinged structures, necessary:

  1. To stitch
  2. Saw down the tops
  3. Soak with antiseptic and cover with a primer

Installation of a fence from a wooden picket fence

Installation of support pillars

As with any fencing, the first thing to do is to install supporting supports. Here, the factor of unevenness of the landscape should be taken into account. If the owner of the future fence has a desire to build along the level of the upper line, then you need to think about how to close up the uncovered gap at the bottom of the picket fence. This can be a foundation or longer boards of the picket fence itself. It should only be taken into account that the boards can be increased by no more than 25 cm. For larger indicators, more frequent installation of pillars and additional veins will be required.

All these components will require significant expenses. Therefore, for large drops heights in the path of the future structure, it is preferable to carry out installation in the form of steps. That is, each subsequent span will be higher or lower than the previous one. So, to install the support:

  1. A hole is pulled out, 1 m deep
  2. A pillar is installed in it, leveled in all directions
  3. The pit is thrown with large stones so that they do not disturb the position of the support
  4. The pit is filled with concrete or mortar (depending on the size of the rubble material)
  5. From the installed post, the guide thread is pulled and the next support is installed at the desired distance

Mount lag

The next step is to attach the crossbars. They, as mentioned earlier, must be attached directly to the posts. If this is impossible due to the discrepancy between the sizes of the veins, then the joints of their upper and lower rows must be separated into different spans. Docking occurs by making L-shaped notches on each of the fastened ends and their subsequent alignment and fastening with self-tapping screws.

Pay attention to the range of brackets on construction market for fences. Above, you can see an example of attaching the lag to the posts using special brackets. Thus, you can shorten the installation time of the fence and achieve an aesthetic appearance.

Others are simpler, but less aesthetic option there will be screwing from above and below from the junction of the bars. When using concrete pillars for an eurofence, the veins are simply placed in the grooves, and to separate them in space, you can place a beam 40x40 mm thick and a length equal to the required distance between the slabs in the groove between them.

Fastening a wooden picket fence

A wooden picket fence is attached to the fence with nails (depending on the material of the lag), or better, self-tapping screws at a distance of at least 15 cm from each other. An exception may be wooden fence checkerboard, where vertical elements of the fence are mounted in a checkerboard pattern on both sides of the crossbeam.

In this case, the distance between the picket fence on each side will be equal to the size of the elements placed on the opposite side, or as indicated in the schematic picture below.

If the veins were attached to the posts from the outside, it makes sense to calculate the installation of the picket fence in such a way that one of its elements overlaps the junction of the crossbars. Additional self-tapping screws, screwed through one board, but into different veins, will make the structure stronger.

Painting a wooden picket fence

After finishing the installation of all components of the structure, you can start painting. As already mentioned, the priming of all elements should have been done just before the assembly of the fence, since the place of contact of the transverse bars and vertical boards it will be impossible to cover with paint, and the constant moisture that will accumulate there can quickly render the wood at the joints unusable. Almost always, improper painting of the picket fence is the main cause of loosening of these types of fences.

You can use for painting both special paints for wood, and universal enamels, and nitro paints. It is beautiful when the tree is varnished, but here it is worth considering that for a permanent presentable state of the fence, it will have to be completely cleaned from the old coating every two to three years and a new one should be applied.

Photo of beautiful fences made of wooden picket fence

Below, you can see a photo of beautiful wooden picket fences. Please note that every master and owner of the house tries to make his fence unique and inimitable by applying various techniques stacking and color combinations

  1. Fastening the picket fence should not be done below 15–20 cm from the ground. Splashes of mud and water during rain will accelerate the deterioration of wood, but the most dangerous is snow drifts. Since it has not only corrosive, but also a physical effect on any fence. The question arises of what to do with such a gap through which there will be a constant migration of animals in both directions. One of the options would be fastening with brackets, a strip of galvanized mesh with a mesh size of 50x50 mm. The anti-corrosion coating of this material will allow it to last long years, but grey colour will make it invisible against the general background of the fence structure. Possible distortions caused by vegetation and snowdrifts can be easily corrected without the help of any tools.
  2. No matter how well the ends of the entire structure were processed, still more reliable protection for them, the presence of a ridge made of a metal profile can serve. It can be ordered from firms that manufacture this type of product. Such an element will not only create additional protection for the entire structure, but also significantly decorate it if you are creative in the choice of shape and color.
  3. If a wooden fence stands close to a road, then for its safety it is worth planting a continuous strip of low bushes in front of it, which will take on spray from passing vehicles.

If all stages of the construction of a fence made of a wooden picket fence are approached responsibly, all work is carried out efficiently and safely, then the result obtained will be able to benefit and please the eye with its appearance for more than a decade.

Every owner wants his plot country house or the cottage was fenced beautiful fence... Now there are many options for fences, you just have to choose which one suits you best both in appearance and in your pocket.

The golden mean in the choice can be a wooden picket fence, which can be easily made with your own hands, without using the expensive help of a specialist. With the help of a picket fence, you can beautifully outline the territory of a country house or cottage and at the same time save a lot. Making a wooden picket fence with your own hands is quite simple, you just need to know a few basic rules and features, which we will consider point by point.

A country house or cottage is the place that you want to make it especially beautiful and cozy. This is an area for rest, privacy and relaxation. You can achieve the necessary harmony with the help small parts: plant beautiful flowers, make a gazebo, swing, build a nice decorative fence. And if you do all this with your own hands, then it will be many times more pleasant to admire all this beauty later.

Why picket fence?

A do-it-yourself wooden picket fence has so many advantages that it’s probably impossible to count all of them, but making a wooden picket fence with your own hands and installing it is quite simple.

Here are the main advantages of such a fence:

  1. Such a fence is universal. A wooden picket fence just fits perfectly into almost any design and can become a color for the landscape of the area.
  2. The picket fence is pretty reliable. Everything, of course, depends on the wood you choose, the height of the fence and the width of the picket fence.
  3. Cheap materials and their availability.
  4. Such a fence is very easy to maintain. One has only to periodically cover the surface with paint or varnish to prevent the possibility of defects.

It is also equally important that the wooden picket fence does not shade the area near the fence, which means that beautiful flowers or other plants can be planted near the fence. And such a fence will perfectly emphasize country style territory or no less popular country style now.

The picket fence is very easy to work with, and different original options the appearance of the structure - in the form of waves, semicircles, triangles and other patterns.

Types of picket structures

Wooden picket fence can be of two types - with or without a base. In order to make a do-it-yourself wooden picket fence with a base, it is necessary to make a foundation for the support pillars and strip foundation under the fence itself. The foundation for a wooden fence, a picket fence is made in the form of a trench with the help of an ordinary shovel with your own hands, and it is better to do the grooves under the posts with the help hand drill.

The depth of the foundation should be about one meter. At the bottom, you need to fill and tamp a pillow of sand or gravel. Support pillars are concreted strictly vertically into the recesses, and formwork must be installed in place of the foundation under the fence. After pouring the foundation, it is necessary to wait about 7 days for the solution to dry and set. After the confluence of this line, you can proceed to the next work.

Such a fence is more durable than a picket fence without a foundation, since the base of the picket fence is additionally protected from moisture from the ground. The foundation of such a fence can be overlaid torn stone or other material.

A fence without a base is simpler in its design. For its construction, it is only necessary to make holes for the support pillars and, after their installation, tamp the soil tightly. The pillar should enter the ground by more than a meter.

If the fence is high and heavy, then a metal plate must be attached to the posts, which will additionally ensure the stability of the post. The plates are firmly supported on the ground.

Required materials and tools

To build a wooden picket fence with your own hands, you need the following materials and tools:

  1. Wooden pickets. They can be from different tree species - pine, cedar, larch and others. Pickets are made from narrow edged boards.
  2. Support pillars. Usually these are metal or asbestos pipes, as well as thick beams.
  3. Crossbars. Do-it-yourself wooden pickets are used as crossbars under the fence, metal or wooden blocks.
  4. A hammer.
  5. Nails or screws.
  6. Screwdriver or screwdriver.
  7. Level.
  8. Wood treatment agent (paint, varnish, stain).
Bottom support pillars(if they are wooden) must be treated with a special protective agent from decay. This will extend the lines of the fence service.

Picket fences can be purchased ready-made in special stores, or you can make yourself. This process does not require special knowledge and skills. Surface wooden slats it is necessary to clean well, file and sand the tops. Decorative tops on the fence look beautiful. It can be semicircles, rectangles, triangles, you can also make decorative figures with a pattern.

The wood must be of a certain moisture content. If you use raw wood for the construction of a wooden picket fence, then the fence will not stand for a long time, soon after installation defects and curvatures will appear.

In order to start the installation of a wooden picket fence, you need to prepare and clean the area through which it will pass with your own hands, cut the grass. Next, you need to mark the perimeter. To do this, along the line of the future fence, it is worth hammering in wooden stakes and pulling the cord. Do-it-yourself wooden picket fence will be installed according to this marking.

The next step will be excavation... With the help of a hand drill or a shovel, required view foundation as described above. The foundation for the pillars must be done after accurately measuring the distance between the future support pillars. After completing the development of the foundation, support pillars can be installed. The post is installed on a prepared cushion of sand or gravel and concreted (a ball of concrete can be alternated with a ball of soil). Metal poles must be painted before installation to protect against corrosion.

During the installation of the support pillars, it is necessary to adhere to strict verticality, since violation of this rule can lead to the collapse of the fence. The building level will help you with this.

Next, crossbars are attached to the support pillars. If the pillars or crossbars are wooden, then they can be fastened with bolts, self-tapping screws or ordinary nails, and if they are metal, then you can use electric welding. Usually, two crossbars are designed, at a distance of about 20 cm from the bottom and top of the fence. Good fastening cross members are very important for the stability and durability of the fence, since they take the load from the fence. During the selection of crossbars, it is necessary to take into account the weight of one span of a wooden picket fence.

After all the cross-beams are attached, you can proceed directly to the installation of the fence pickets. Pickets are attached to the crossbars with self-tapping screws and a screwdriver or simple nails and a hammer. In order for the pickets to be attached at the same level, you can pull a cord over their top after mounting the extreme pickets. The distance between the pickets is usually equal to the width of one picket. To make the distance equal, you can install another picket between the hammered and nailed pickets, which will act as a distance template.

It is better to nail one shtaketine with 4 nails (self-tapping screws), 2 for each cross-piece from above and below. This will ensure a tight fit.

The wooden picket fence is ready! It remains only to cover it with a protective agent. As such, you can use paint, varnish, stain, lime. The wood covered with wood stain and varnish looks very nice. With this processing method, you can simulate different types of wood. It is imperative to process a wooden fence periodically. This will ensure its durability and strength.

A picket fence is one of the most popular fences among the people. This is due to its strength, durability and reasonable price of building materials. You can create such fences with your own hands in just a few days. Later in the article, we will talk in detail about the types of these structures and the rules for creating your own fence from a picket fence.

Execution options

A picket fence is a fence made of vertically installed battens and crossbeams. The slats can be made of a wide variety of materials: metal, wood, plastic, polymer composite, polyvinyl chloride, etc.

In addition, the slats do not have to be located vertically - some craftsmen make graceful fences with a semicircular, horizontal or crossed picket arrangement.

Important! When constructing a fence made of wood, self-tapping screws for fastening pickets must be moistened in drying oil. This will extend the life of the fence.

Make a picket layout different ways best when working with wood material as it is easier to adjust for length and width. This is especially true for those people who want to build a fence with their own hands for the first time and at the same time want to dream up with possible options layouts.

The most popular options remain:

There are a lot of options, but the implementation of some of them (without experience in building fences) remains an almost impossible task. The simplest option is to order an elegant picket fence from the master (you can come up with a drawing yourself), and then simply install it vertically.

Made of wood

The most popular type of private fencing summer cottages... The tree remains one of the most affordable and environmentally friendly building materials... To install a fence from it, you do not need exotic tools and special skills or knowledge.

Moreover, professional craftsmen can build you a unique decorative fence from a wooden picket fence, which will be much more difficult to create from another material.

Made of metal

In this case, the slats are made of special metal alloys coated with polymer spraying. They have different lengths, depending on the needs of the buyer (180 cm, 230 cm, 260 cm, etc.).

Unlike corrugated board, a metal picket leaves gaps between which your site can get sunlight... The tops of the metal slats can be made in the shape of a W, this design is a kind of protection from intruders.

Made of plastic

A plastic-based picket fence is gaining more and more popularity in recent years. In most cases, this is due to the low cost of the material and wide choice various designs on the market.

The plastic picket fence has a hollow profile structure, which is why it is rather fragile, especially when exposed to negative temperatures and ultraviolet radiation (the source of the latter is the sun's rays).

But science does not stand still, and today you can buy quite strong and flexible plastic, and a fence made of it will be as durable as metal. For example, polyvinyl chloride is a tough, flexible plastic that can withstand high mechanical stress.

Recently, a picket fence made of wood-polymer composite (WPC) has become more and more popular. WPC fences are able to withstand frosts down to -60 ° C and heat up to 100 ° C. WPC does not fade in the sun and does not contain harmful additives, therefore it is increasingly used as a starting material for the manufacture of fences.

Did you know? Southeast Australia is home to the world's longest fence. Its length is 5614 km. It was built at the end of the 19th century to protect sheep from wild dingo dogs hunting them.

Installation and assembly of the fence

Installing a picket fence is not the most difficult task, but it still has its own nuances and rules. We will talk about this in detail below.

Required tools and materials

To make a wooden fence, we need:

  • wooden posts that will be used to install supports;
  • timber - 40 * 40, about 200-250 cm long;
  • prepared for installation of picket;
  • stakes and cord for marking the site;
  • concrete and crushed stone for the installation of supports;
  • bituminous mastic, roofing material and antiseptic (for waterproofing supports);
  • manual or electric drill, tape measure;
  • wheelbarrow;
  • concrete mixer (if you are going to buy ready-mixed concrete, it will not be needed);
  • rammer;
  • bayonet and shovels;

Important! At the time of buying finished material from wood, pay attention to its smell. Raw material with a "scent" of mold indicates that decay processes have begun in the wood.

If you are going to construct a fence from metal picket fence, you need to acquire the following materials and devices:

  • welding machine;
  • screwdriver or electric drill;
  • rivets or screws;
  • level;
  • Bulgarian;
  • prepared metal pickets.

In addition, you will need supports, concrete, a drill and other accessories to construct the frame of the fence. We described all this in the list for a wooden hedge.

If you are going to enclose your site with a plastic fence, it is best to immediately purchase ready-made fences, the whole point of the installation of which is to install supports and attach ready-made plastic sections to them. These sections have already been built (plastic pickets are attached to the crossbar).
You can buy the entire structure disassembled, but then you will have to fix the pickets yourself, using rivets or glue. The tools required for installation are the same as in the previous cases.

Installation of supports

The durability and reliability of the fence will depend on the quality of the installation of the support posts. Supports can be driven deep into the ground with a sledgehammer, they can be concreted, but best of all, they can be installed in a concrete-filled parapet.

The latter installation option has several advantages at once:

  • the construction of the fence will be more durable and reliable;
  • the picket fence will not come into contact with soil moisture, which will significantly extend its service life;
  • water from a neutral territory will not be able to freely enter your site.

The distance between the installed supports should be within 2-3 meters. It is necessary to deepen the pillars by 1-1.5 meters, although this is not a strict rule. Experts note that the support should be buried at least 1/4 of its length into the ground.

Video: how to install a support post

Wooden supports must be treated with an antiseptic and bituminous mastic... These substances significantly extend the life of the posts, because untreated wood can completely rot after 10 years (the period also depends on the type of wood).

In addition, the supports can be wrapped in roofing felt, which prevents excess moisture from entering the wood.

Metal poles can be concreted without pretreatment, however, like plastic ones. The last two materials will not be significantly affected by contact with concrete or soil in the next few decades.

Important! When installing plastic or metal supports, be sure to put on a protective cap on the top, which will not allow water to pass into the column.

During installation, be sure to control the ideal verticality of the supports relative to the ground. It is recommended to install the crossbeams 5-7 days after the installation of the supports (if the concreting method was used).
In case you just drove the posts deep into the ground (without concrete pouring), the crossbars can be installed on the same day.

Each span must contain two crossbars, which are fixed parallel to each other and perpendicular to the main supports. Metal diameters are fixed with anchors or a welding machine.

The second option is only suitable for those who have knowledge of welding metal structures... After the final fixing, the diameters are covered with soil (to protect the metal from corrosion).

If you are installing wooden beams, they must first be covered with an antiseptic, and then painted with any color you like. You can also fasten wooden cross-sections with anchors.

However, if your fence is small, with only decorative value(that is, it will not be subjected to serious stress), the crossbars can be fixed with several screws or nails.
The plastic crossbars are fastened with rivets or special glue. However, in the overwhelming majority of cases, for plastic fences on the support, there is a special mount, where the diameters should be placed.

A few words at once about the plastic picket fence:

  • if you purchased a fence on which you need to attach the pickets yourself, then the kit should include special connecting elements (and instructions for use);
  • in most cases, plastic pickets are attached with glue or rivets;
  • it is best to buy ready-made fences that are installed in just two steps (digging in the support posts and inserting sections into the connecting mechanisms).

Attaching a picket fence to the crossbar is very simple, you just need to remember important rule: The distance between adjacent slats must be the same. To control this distance, it is necessary to prepare a template, which can be wooden blocks, Matchbox or level (by which you control the flatness of surfaces). It all depends on how tightly you want to place the pickets relative to each other.

As for the connecting elements: for metal pickets, you can use special metal screws or rivets, for wooden ones - nails or screws. It is only important to choose the optimal length of the connecting elements (so that they do not completely penetrate the cross-sections).

Each picket fence must be secured with two connectors at the top and two at the bottom. At the end of the work, the heads of nails, screws or rivets should be painted along with the picket fence.

Secrets of durability

The durability of a plastic picket fence will directly depend on the quality of the material. We advise you to buy durable composites, such as wood-polymer composites.
Such a material will be able to withstand both moderate mechanical stress and extreme weather conditions.

If you do not throw stones at such a fence, it will stand on your site unchanged for more than a dozen years. In order to preserve wooden and metal fences for a long time, it is necessary to regularly process them. protective coatings: varnish, primer, stain, etc.

Did you know? Polyvinyl chloride, on the basis of which plastic fences are made, is also used to create artificial leather, window profiles and airbags in cars.

It is advisable to paint the fence every 2-3 years, such procedures will save the metal from oxidation, and the wood from decay. If you are the owner metal fence, then only the supports and diameters should be painted, since the pickets themselves are already covered with a special protective coating.

Advantages of picket fences

The advantages of these types of hedges include:

  1. Ease of installation. Even a beginner can build a fence; for this you just need to be guided by the rules that are described in detail in this article.
  2. Easy to care for. Metal and plastic fences only need to be cleaned of dirt and dust, and wooden fences should be covered with protective varnish or paint once every 1-2 years.
  3. Metal and plastic products are protected by a special polymer layer that prevents corrosion and various biological damage.
  4. You can create a structure that will let sunlight into your area.
  5. The cost of picket fence hedges is moderate, especially when compared to concrete or stone fences.
  6. You can build a very beautiful decorative fence from wood - you just need to use your imagination and attract an experienced specialist who will make your idea a reality.

Disadvantages of picket fences

Among the disadvantages of this type fences the following can be distinguished:

  1. Compared to corrugated fences, picket fences are more laborious to install.
  2. The tree can lose its decorative beauty after 10 years (crack, split, etc.). This can happen even with proper care, because a lot depends on the type of wood and climatic conditions a certain region.
  3. A picket fence is fragile and can break under the weight of a person who tries to climb over it.

Now you know what kind of picket fences are and how to install them correctly on your site. Play with imagination, connect imagination and skills, and you will definitely succeed.

The picket fence is included in the category of cheap types of private fences land plots... Massive structures made of bricks, concrete, wooden beams have serious advantages, but they cost a lot of money and are not available to everyone. An urgent task for most summer residents is to find alternative options for fencing your territory.

A wooden picket fence becomes one of them. This alternative has been used for a long time. In particular, 50 years ago, the percentage of installation of fences of this type, made of wooden materials, was very high. At the same time, the external picture was somewhat spoiled by the uniformity of such vertical structures.

With development building technologies and the expansion of the information field, when specialized organizations began to offer their services via the Internet, the attention of people was presented various options enclosing structures. It is not difficult to find a photo of a picket fence made not only of wood, but also of other materials on the Internet.

Combination has become popular different materials when installing fences. Today you can often find fences where wood and facing brick... And even uniformity today implies the use of wood, metal or plastic.

Any of these basic materials allows you to easily and quickly erect a site fence, serve as protection and, at the same time, in some cases, perform the function of outdoor decoration of the house.

Advantages of wooden fencing structures made of picket fence

The creation of a beautiful aesthetic appearance is important when constructing volumetric elements. But not only the house should be beautiful. The fence, which is part of the suburban private territory, complements the external architectural ensemble and represents that part of it, on which the general attention is fixed in the first place. It is important that this element is made in accordance with the aesthetic standards.

Wood belongs to the category of easy-to-process materials and is in great demand among consumers who want to build unique structures on their sites. In addition, if you have the skills to work with wood, have a good imagination and a desire to make a fence from a picket fence with your own hands, the question of saving money is removed by itself.

With the repeated focus on light wood processing, the process of building a fence becomes interesting, its implementation in various configurations, without changing the technology of work.

The result is a reliable wooden fence made of wood material a certain breed. Appearance designs are formed depending on the parameters of the pickets and the order of their installation.

Correctly carried out work, in accordance with the technological order and in compliance with all standards, will allow you to get a strong structure, which will have every chance to serve for many years. It is not difficult to care for such a structure.

Considering that the tree is afraid of fire, water and insects, for which it is a "delicacy", it is necessary to treat the surface with protective substances and make the structure waterproof and not amenable to combustion and decay.

Describing the advantages of a picket fence, many indicate that the presence of frequent gaps in the structure makes it possible not to shade the area and have excellent ventilation of the adjacent part of the territory. Usually, plants that love sunlight are planted along these fences.

Metal and plastic in the process of erecting picket fences

In an effort to stand out among the neighbors, to find some kind of individuality, many summer residents prefer to replace wood materials to others. Someone builds a fence from a metal picket fence, and someone uses plastic for this. Choice is a personal preference for each person.

The main criteria when choosing a material are strength, reliability and an attractive aesthetic appearance resulting from the structure.

Plastic picket fence, among other things, eliminates additional protective treatment, coloring and is designed for quick and easy maintenance. This material can be called the most suitable for beautiful design as there are many colors other than the standard white tone.

At the same time, the installation of a fence made of a metal picket fence, the material for which is profiled strips, allows you to get the most solid construction... It is otherwise called euroshtaketnik.

In addition to the advantages common to wood and plastic, this fence has its own advantages. In particular, they are expressed in the absence of the need for supporting posts. Metal itself is a very tough material and does not require additional fixation.

The main types of fence installations

Traditionally, the picket fence is installed vertically, however, for those who do not recognize the standard approaches, there are other options for fastening the material. The planks can be fixed vertically or alternate in a checkerboard pattern. In this case, the type of material does not matter. Only the fasteners are essential.

Metal, wooden or even plastic narrow strips from which you can assemble a fence, it is customary to call a picket fence. However, despite such a "generalized" name, fences made of them can end up being very diverse. And, of course, even a beginner can easily cope with such work, since it is quite easy to make a fence from a picket fence. Especially if you know a couple of nuances.

Support

Any fence is usually divided into sections that are supported by supports buried in the ground. If the fence is heavy (for example, made of brick), then not only the supports should be buried and concreted into the ground, but a real strip foundation should be made. The same should be done in those situations when there are blowing strong winds(capable of overturning a poorly secured fence) or on the site (yours or the neighboring one) there are dogs who love to arrange "undermines".

Making a fence from a picket fence with your own hands, you can choose as a support as metal pipe(including profile - square or rectangular section) and wooden bar(not less than 5x5 centimeters in size) or a concreted asbestos-cement pipe. Usually, the supports are made of the same material as the fence itself (the only exceptions are asbestos-cement pipes, which are best combined with a wooden picket fence).

Metal supports can be driven into the ground by first drilling a hole in it to a depth of at least 50 centimeters (its diameter must exceed the cross-section of the support). After driving metal post the space around it should be covered with gravel and tamped.

A wooden beam, when used as a support, should be treated with bituminous mastic in the lower part, then wrapped with roofing material and only then concreted by immersing at least 50-70 centimeters into a hole dug in the ground.

Supports made of asbestos-cement pipes should also be concreted to the same depth. Remember that an empty pipe is quite fragile, so concrete should be poured into it after the installation of the fence.

Frame

The picket strips will not hold on to the fence by themselves - they need a frame that will connect adjacent supports. If the supports are metal, then the frame is also made of the same material (mainly from shaped pipe small section). The frame itself consists of two or three horizontally laid elements, to which the picket strips will later be attached.

At wooden poles the frame is made from a bar with a section of 4x4 or 5x5 centimeters or from boards no more than 10 centimeters wide and at least 2 centimeters thick.

It is customary to mount to supports made of asbestos-cement pipes metal carcass... For these purposes, holes are made in them through which small segments are passed. metal fittings... Then frame strips are welded to them on both sides.

Fastening the picket fence

The picket fence is attached to the horizontal slats of the frame in about the same way for all types of slat material:

  1. Measure the width of your existing picket fence and the distance between the supports. Calculate what should be the distance between separate elements picket fence so that the fence looks solid, and not like a leaky sieve.
  2. Determine the shape of the top edge of your fence. Since it will be quite difficult to make a fence from a curved picket fence after you fix all the straight elements, take care of giving the necessary bend to the picket fence in advance. Most often, they use the shape of a convex semicircle (within one section of the fence), however, Feng Shui experts (if you suddenly decide to listen to their advice), recommend giving the sections of the fence the appearance of a concave semicircle ("bowl"), the "duty" of which is to attract everything you need: from money to family well-being.
  3. Install the supports of the future fence. If you have concreted them, then wait until the concrete has completely hardened, and the whole structure does not tilt under the weight of the picket fence.
  4. Fasten the frame for the picket fence on the supports in the form of horizontal strips. It is better to fasten metal elements to each other by welding, and wooden ones - with self-tapping screws.
  5. Paint the supports and the frame (after fixing the picket fence, this will be difficult to do).
  6. Paint the picket fence if necessary.
  7. Attach strips with the same pitch in all sections of the fence to the horizontal elements of its frame. The picket fence should not touch the ground, especially if it is made of wood. Fasten wooden planks with self-tapping screws.
  8. If you want to make the fence as invisible as possible, place the pickets on both sides of the horizontal slats of the frame in a checkerboard pattern. In this case, the step between the individual pickets should be 2 centimeters less than their width.
