How to glue wallpaper on the ceiling - step by step instructions, types of wallpaper and surfaces. Light finishing of the ceiling: wallpaper From the history of wallpapering the ceiling

On a limited budget, one of the most economical options ceiling decoration is its decoration with ceiling wallpaper. Fortunately, the variety of choice of materials makes it possible to create interesting and original interiors even in conditions disabilities... Planning to make a quick and inexpensive refreshing redecorating, for many apartment owners, the stumbling block is the question of how to stick wallpaper on the ceiling. Let's look at the main points of this process, which is quite complicated at first glance.

Wall and ceiling wallpaper: what is the difference

On construction market ceiling wallpaper like separate species do not emit. To decorate the ceiling, paintable wallpapers are mainly used, which have many textures.

Wallpaper designed for the ceiling has a two-layer and dense structure. In most cases, their surface is embossed, which allows them to easily hide minor flaws and minor defects in the ceiling. Compared to conventional wall wallpaper, ceiling wallpaper is more durable and thick.

Ceiling wallpaper can have a paper, fabric or synthetic backing. Paper and fabric, which are glued in two layers of canvases, are used to decorate dry living spaces. Non-woven wallpaper made of textile and cellulose fibers is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.

Most often, manufacturers produce wallpapers designed for the ceiling in white and light colors.

Selection of the necessary materials

Arrangement of the flooring is one of the key points in preparation for work. You will walk on it, straightening and trimming the cuts of the rolls. If you plan to glue the wallpaper on the ceiling alone, then it is better to build a longer structure. When working in pairs, it is convenient to manage with two short decks.

It is easiest to use as a flooring dinner table... You can also build a structure from two ladders, between which wide boards are laid or scaffolding.

To glue the ceiling wallpaper, we also need:

  • wallpaper and glue;
  • roulette;
  • level;
  • long thread;
  • simple pencil;
  • scissors and a stationery knife;
  • container for mixing glue;
  • wide brush;
  • rubber wallpaper spatula;
  • dry rags.

In addition to scissors and a pencil, you need to purchase a brush for leveling the pasted wallpaper.

Surface preparation for gluing

Surface preparation - mandatory procedure, which should be approached with all responsibility. After all, the quality of adhesion of materials will directly depend on this.

Cleaning the ceiling from old coatings

You can remove the old whitewash from the ceiling with a spatula. It is great if it turns out to dry immediately clean the surface to zero. If the chalk is hard to scrape off, the area to be treated can be wetted.

An important point: just do not wet the entire ceiling, otherwise it will harden and it will be even harder to clean it.

You can make it easier to remove old wallpaper by saturating it. warm water... There are even special liquids on sale that can speed up the process of preparing the ceiling. Wet wallpaper will easily be removed if you pry it with a wide spatula or a regular knife.

It takes a little more effort to remove the old paint. To take off the surface water-based paint, it is necessary to wet it abundantly with water and leave for half an hour with a wide open window. It will not be difficult to remove the "breathed" and exfoliated paint during this time with a wide spatula.

To get rid of small grains of chalk on an already cleaned surface, just walk on it with a wet brush

Removing dirt and rust stains

You can glue the wallpaper only on the ceiling, the surface of which is not "decorated" with traces of leaks and mold spots. Neglecting this rule, you should be prepared for the fact that the finish will not last even several months.

Get rid of rust stains you can wipe them with a 10% solution copper sulfate... There are two ways to eliminate the fungus: simply by knocking out the affected area of the surface or by treating it special means, which can be purchased at any hardware store. Wear protective goggles and gloves when handling chemicals.

Crack treatment

For larger cracks, it is best to use a starter filler. For this, large cracks are pre-expanded with a narrow spatula, and the resulting voids are filled with the composition.

After the putty has dried, the surface can only be leveled by rubbing with a fine-grained sandpaper.

Small cracks are easiest to wipe with a finishing plaster putty.

Base primer

It is not necessary to prime the walls before wallpapering. But by covering the surface with a primer, you can not only save time on cleaning the ceiling, but also greatly facilitate and speed up the process of wallpapering. The acrylic primer dries within an hour. It "breathes" and does not create a greenhouse effect.

Technology wallpaper stickers

The process of wallpapering the ceiling is not much different from wallpapering the walls. However, it has certain difficulties. If, when pasting walls, it is easy to get around and on their own, then when finishing the ceiling without an assistant it will be quite difficult.

Ceiling markings

If on the walls the wallpaper starts to be glued from the corner, then on the ceiling - in the direction of the incident light, that is, from the window, gradually moving towards the door of the room. This approach allows you to make the joints as invisible as possible.

The cloths are placed perpendicular to the window. If it is necessary to complete the decoration in a room without windows, then the panels are glued along the length of the ceiling.

Stretch the lace parallel to the walls and draw guide lines with a simple pencil.

Expert advice: to simplify the marking process, the lace can be pre-rubbed with colored chalk. The trace of the strip left by the lace on the ceiling will be the guideline for the placement of the panels.

To mark the ceiling with parallel lines between the walls, mark the distance from opposite sides equal to the width of the rolls

When calculating the length of the canvases corresponding to the length of the premises, add 1.5-2 cm on each side to overlap the walls.

Glue preparation

For different types wallpaper use appropriate types of glue. The heavier the wallpaper, the thicker the solution is required for them, ensuring their reliable fixation to the ceiling.

Dissolving the glue correctly is an important point in preparatory process... Indeed, the tenacity of the materials and the drying time depend on this. Dilute the adhesive with water strictly in the proportions indicated in the instructions for it.

Gluing panels

The strips of pre-cut rolls are laid face down on a clean, level surface. The glue is applied with a wide brush, carefully covering the entire area of the cut, and left to soak for 5-7 minutes. When decorating the ceiling with non-woven wallpaper, it is not required to apply glue to the panels themselves.

It is convenient to fold the glued strip like an "accordion" in wide folds of 30 cm. This will facilitate the process of gluing the panel in the future.

We gradually lay out the "accordion", controlling the direction relative to the intended line

With the wallpaper prepared, we climb onto the flooring, grabbing a rubber spatula, scissors and rags. We apply the edge of the strip to the ceiling.

Having aligned the strip, we press it more tightly to the ceiling. To get rid of the remaining air bubbles and excess glue, smooth the canvas with a rubber spatula from the middle to the edges. Applying subsequent canvases, Special attention pay attention to the alignment of the joints.

Video instruction, clearly describing the process:

When the canvases are dry, it remains only to cut off the excess pieces with a clerical knife on a spatula. After completion of work, you can safely attach ceiling plinth and enjoy the contemplation of the result.

Pasting the ceiling and walls with wallpaper requires knowledge of some nuances, otherwise the wallpaper will have to be re-glued.

The wallpaper is glued to the previously prepared wall and ceiling surfaces. Old paint or wallpaper is removed at the walls and, if necessary, it is produced. On the last stage preparation, the surfaces of the walls and ceiling should be primed.

Wallpapering the ceiling

For the ceiling, light wallpapers are usually selected, monochromatic or having a barely noticeable pattern. Therefore, it is better to choose a light glue for wallpapering the ceiling. When choosing a glue, it should be borne in mind that some of them, after dilution, take on a slightly yellowish tint, respectively, such glue can leave yellowish spots on light wallpaper.

For example, paste is well suited for wallpapering ceilings, which is prepared as follows: starch is diluted with water to the desired consistency, then PVA glue is added there in a ratio of 1:20. Such a composition will perfectly adhere the wallpaper and will not leave yellowish spots.

When gluing wallpaper to the ceiling, two or three tables or ladders will come in handy. Once prepared in this way, you will be able to move around the room easily and safely.

Cutting wallpaper for pasting the ceiling is carried out as follows: the length of the ceiling is measured, and the canvas is cut, which should be 10 cm longer than the ceiling. Such a stock is necessary in order to bring wallpaper 5 cm on the wall on each side.

If with a picture, it should be observed when cutting canvases. Wallpaper is prepared immediately for the entire ceiling and, for convenience, are numbered on the back.

It is very convenient to apply glue to the wallpaper with a special paint roller, the working surface of which must be made of foam rubber or some kind of fleecy material.

After the cloth is glued, it must be folded in an envelope - first, both sides of the cloth are folded to its middle so that the glued side is inside. Then the resulting structure is folded in half again. It turns out a canvas folded four times.

Thus, all or part of the prepared canvases are glued and stacked. After that, you can start gluing the wallpaper.

Wallpaper should be glued parallel to the short wall so that the canvases are not too long. You should start from the opposite wall from the door.

It is more convenient to apply the canvas starting from its middle, gradually gluing it and rolling it with a special rubber roller on the sides. Do not forget that you need to do a descent to the walls about 5 cm, this applies not only to the ends of the canvas, but also to its longitudinal part, if it is adjacent to the wall. If the wallpaper is glued with an overlap, then it should be done towards the light, that is, the windows.

Wallpapering the walls

The walls should also be prepared and primed before wallpapering. To keep the wallpaper tighter in the corners and in those places where it borders and doorways, in the indicated places, layering should be done. Layering is done with a width of 10-15 cm. Liquid oil paint or drying oil.

Then the wallpaper is cut into canvases, while, if necessary, the pattern is taken into account. After that, you can start gluing the canvases. When gluing, be careful not to allow debris to fall on the part to be glued, and prevent glue from flowing onto the front of the wallpaper. They are glued in the same way as in the case of gluing the ceiling, then folded into an envelope and kept for an average of 10 minutes. This time depends on the type and thickness of the wallpaper.

Then the wall is coated with glue. The width of the wall gluing should be one or two sheets, it depends on the glue setting speed, which is approximately 15-20 minutes.

You should start pasting walls with wallpaper from difficult areas - behind, pipes, beams and ledges. Then the wallpaper is glued to the wall with a window, starting from the window opening. For greater accuracy, you can check the verticality every 3-4 canvases using a plumb line.

The thinner the wallpaper, the more overlap should be between the canvases. If the density of the wallpaper does not exceed 120 g / m 2, an overlap of at least 1 cm should be made. The overlap is made towards the window, so it will be much less visible. Do not overlap wider, otherwise it will be clearly visible. Heavier wallpapers are glued back to back.

The corners of the room are pasted over as follows: the canvas is applied so that it extends 1 cm onto the adjacent wall. The canvas for the adjacent wall overlaps this centimeter, right into the corner.

It is better to roll the wallpaper with a special rubber roller, this is done from top to bottom and to the sides. If, after the sheet is glued, there are air bubbles under it, it should be peeled off from below and rolled out again. This should be done carefully, as the fabric soaked in glue can easily tear.

Even when cutting canvases, you should outline the places where the electrical switches and sockets. Before you start wallpapering, the covers from the sockets and switches should be removed, and after pasting, when the wallpaper is dry, make cross-to-cross cuts in the designated places and cut off the excess.

In the room where wallpapering is carried out, the temperature regime should be observed. The room temperature should not be below 15 and above 27 degrees. Indoor humidity should also be observed. In too humid room the wallpaper may come loose soon.

In some hard-to-reach places where wallpapering is a difficult task, it may be more correct to paint the wall surface with oil paint matched to the wallpaper.

In interior design, various finishing materials are used, with the help of which it is possible to visually increase the size of the room, to create a cozy atmosphere in the room. Wide range of wallpapers on the market are very popular among consumers. An impressive range of shades, patterns and patterns allows you to choose beautiful finish for any room. Therefore, many people are concerned about the question of how to glue wallpaper on the ceiling, because this process is more complicated than pasting walls.

From a decorative and aesthetic point of view, wallpaper in the interior - optimal solution... Each person is able to independently carry out the work, which allows you to save on the services of a professional team. Even the most expensive samples are reasonably priced, so finishing costs will be minimal. The only difficulty is gluing to the horizontal plane of the ceiling. But if you adhere to the pasting technology and properly prepare the surface, the wallpaper will hold on tightly and please the household with a beautiful view for several years.

What nuances and difficulties arise when gluing wallpaper to the ceiling with your own hands:

  • The surface must be ideally prepared, free from defects, cracks, large differences, so that the material does not lag behind.
  • It is undesirable to glue structured products and wide rolls; under their own weight, the canvases may fall off.
  • Warm air rises towards the ceiling, causing the adhesive to dry quickly, so there is little time to make adjustments.
  • It is problematic to glue wallpaper on a horizontal surface on your own - you need helpers.
  • Ceiling lighting emphasizes the flaws in the pasting, and nothing can be done to mask them.
  • To obtain a complete composition, the seams must be made almost invisible.

With the wallpaper on the ceiling, you can create exclusive interior, visually make the room more spacious and bright. With the right combination of colors with walls, furniture and floor covering the room is changing before our eyes. And installation lighting fixtures will emphasize beautiful interior and put the right accents.

Important! If the ceiling is uneven, there are joints between tile floors, significant differences in height, the masters advise to level the surface with sheets of drywall, and then glue the wallpaper.

How to choose wallpaper

The range of wallpaper products amazes with a variety of shades, textures, patterns. Thick products that are suitable for wall covering cannot be used for ceiling decoration. They are more difficult to glue, and the stripes will lag behind their weight. The rolls are marked with the weight of the products. For the ceiling, samples with a weight not exceeding 110 g / m2 are suitable. The types of wallpaper that can be glued to the ceiling differ in the type of base, surface texture, color, width, and the presence of an edge.

Paper

A budget option, quite suitable for the ceiling. Simple specimens have a smooth face and a slightly rough base. Paper copies are the most different shades, with pictures and without patterns. In terms of density, the product belongs to thin wallpaper, therefore, when gluing, all surface irregularities are repeated. Before finishing, you need to carefully prepare the base. Washable paper wallpaper and "mute", which are best glued in rooms with permanent temperature regime and low humidity - bedrooms, living rooms, nurseries.

Embossed

Structural wallpaper is made from more thick paper... Such products well mask minor defects - microcracks and small irregularities. The technology of gluing is joint to joint, and it is necessary to connect the strips so that the seams are invisible. In the interior, samples with views of the starry sky look interesting; with the help of embossed wallpaper, you can play up complex multi-level structures in an original way. If the design uses a drawing, you need to strictly align the stripes so that the fragments of the art composition clearly match.

Vinyl

Vinyl products are made on a paper or non-woven base, which affects the choice of glue and ease of execution finishing works... Depending on the texture front surface, there are flat vinyl in the form of spraying with a slight relief on paper backing, silk-screened with filaments, cold-stamped foam vinyl, dense textured hard vinyl and washable polyethylene. Wear-resistant washable wallpaper can even be used for bathroom ceilings.

Non-woven

There are two main types of finishing materials. Solid color options with embossing are suitable for subsequent painting, have an attractive embossed texture, give an effect gypsum plaster and visually make the room spacious. After painting, they do not lose their qualities. Two-layer pieces on a non-woven base with vinyl spraying on front side have pronounced decorative properties, suitable for pasting ceilings in any premises, including rooms with high humidity.

Important! Non-woven wallpaper has a translucent structure, therefore it is used for ceilings with a uniform color. If the surface is multi-colored, it must be covered with a layer of putty and primer.

Textile

Wallpaper with a fabric covering on a synthetic or paper layer creates a deep relief effect and looks luxurious. The material is glued to the base using classical technology. Textile wallpapers with linen, silk and jute coverings are suitable for the ceiling, but they cannot be glued in the bathroom or in the kitchen due to moisture. The finish is allowed to be applied on a perfectly flat base. The use of textile wallpaper improves the acoustic characteristics of the room, and the decoration looks expensive and original.

Liquid

Finishing materials are not afraid of moisture, so you can glue ceilings in all rooms with liquid wallpaper. In terms of texture, the products are colored cellulose chips. After soaking, the material turns into a plastic mass, which is applied to the base in a thin layer according to the principle of decorative plaster. With the help of liquid wallpaper, you can form an artistic composition, an applique, an unusual pattern. The material tolerates any temperature conditions well and has moisture-repellent properties.

Glass fiber

Alternatively, such wallpaper can be used for pasting the ceiling, but we must not forget that the material has a significant weight. Roll products are made in the form polymer coating applied to fiberglass. They are resistant to moisture, thanks to special impregnations, but are presented in a limited range of textures and colors. Despite the high density, glass fiber cannot hide significant defects in the ceiling, so they are glued to a well-prepared base. After gluing, the fiberglass can be dyed with woolen rollers.

When choosing finishing materials, financial capabilities and personal taste are taken into account. Most often, consumers prefer non-woven, vinyl and liquid wallpaper... You can use embossed textiles or patterns, but they are more difficult to work with due to the need to perfectly match the pattern. If the ceiling has non-standard shape, it is worth buying wallpaper for further painting.

On a note! When choosing finishing material it is not recommended to purchase wide rolls, bright wallpaper or options with an edge. If the design of the room does not imply an exclusive solution, options in pastel are chosen for finishing the ceiling colors, white wallpaper or plain products. Large drawings visually reduce the dimensions of the room and visually make the room lower.

How to choose the right glue

Since the wallpaper is made of different materials, you need to select the glue that matches the specific type of finish. The composition must firmly fix the wallpaper on the ceiling, have the required consistency and good adhesive properties.

Wallpaper adhesives are classified depending on the purpose:

  • For paper wallpaper, starch-based formulations with the inclusion of antiseptic components are used.
  • Mixtures of starch and methylcellulose are suitable for vinyl and non-woven products.
  • Heavier finishing materials are glued to the same compounds, but with the addition of polymers and biocide.
  • Glass fiber is best adhered to classic PVA glue.

In specialized stores you can purchase universal remedies suitable for any type of wallpaper with a paper or non-woven backing. To choose the right glue, you need to carefully read the instructions from the manufacturer, which indicates the characteristics, composition and purpose of the product. The adhesives are supplied as dry crystals that are diluted with water. After thorough mixing and “swelling” for 20-30 minutes, the product is ready to use.

Interesting! Manufacturers add a coloring pigment with a slight shade to the composition of some wallpaper adhesives. In the process of spreading, the areas not treated with glue are clearly visible.

The technology for gluing non-woven and paper materials is slightly different. Strips of paper-based wallpaper are spread with glue, like the ceiling. Products with a non-woven bottom layer do not need to be processed with glue - the composition is applied only to the ceiling surface, but the glue should be designed specifically for this type of wallpaper. When breeding adhesive mixture the proportions recommended by the manufacturer must be strictly adhered to.

Preparation for the sticker

An important advantage of wallpaper over other types of finishes is its versatility. Wallpaper strips can be used to glue plasterboard ceilings, concrete surfaces, multi-level structures made of plywood and OSB boards. The only prerequisite is that the ceiling must be flat, free from flaws, cracks and significant differences in height within one plane. It is recommended to eliminate the previous coverage as much as possible, since the presence of old paint, plaster affects the adhesion in the ceiling-adhesive-wallpaper bond.

What the preparatory stage includes:

  1. The first rule of builders - the house should shrink - can be skipped if the property has been in operation for more than one year.
  2. Furniture, carpets and other interior items must be removed from the room.
  3. It is necessary to close the windows and doors so that there are no drafts, block the windows from bright sunlight.
  4. Electrical equipment, hoods, air conditioners, ventilation systems should be turned off, dismantled socket boxes.
  5. Assess the condition of the ceiling - cracks, floor joints need to be covered and putty, apply several layers of primer.

For preparatory and pasting work, the following tools and materials are needed: a stepladder (table, chair), a brush, a roller, a clean rag, a bucket of glue, a tape measure and a stationery knife. If you have to cover and putty the ceiling, you will need a trowel, putty knife and a primer brush. Preparation of the base is a prerequisite for high-quality wallpapering.

Concrete

Ceiling decoration is not limited to choosing and gluing wallpaper. If the base is concrete, check the condition of the surface after removing the previous coating from it. If possible, tear off the old wallpaper, then moisten it abundantly with water and scrape off the paper-glue mass, gently prying the strips with a spatula or knife.

Painted concrete ceilings(which is rare) freed from the old coating mechanically and with the help of special washes for the corresponding type of paint. If it is waterproof and very tight, you can leave the ceiling as it is. The rest of the putty is removed and such places are cleaned with sandpaper. Remove limescale or chalk whitewash, eroding it with water.

Before gluing the wallpaper to the ceiling, all cracks and seams on the concrete surface are sealed with fresh gypsum plaster. It is preliminarily recommended to lay a serpyanka mesh. Microcracks and joints of walls and ceiling are rubbed with starting putty, allowed to dry and sanded with sandpaper. To perfectly level the surface, apply finishing mixture thickness 1-2 mm. After preparatory work the ceiling is swept away from dust and primed for good adhesion of the glue. The primer can be applied with a brush or roller in two or more layers, making strokes perpendicular to each other.

Drywall

The best option for wallpapering is ceiling structures from drywall. Correctly installed sheets have a flat surface with no differences in height. The only inconvenience is that you need to seal the seams between the sheets.

How to do it:

  • Select suitable composition gypsum-based, for example, manufactured by Knauf.
  • Prepare a solution in the specified proportion and seal up the joints and attachment points of the sheets - the caps of the self-tapping screws.
  • If the cardboard base of the plasterboard material has a light shade, it is not necessary to completely putty the surface.

Before gluing the ceiling wallpaper, drywall is treated with a layer of primer. One application is enough so that the material is not very wet and does not begin to delaminate.

OSB or plywood

V wooden houses to form a flat surface of the ceilings, OSB plates or plywood are used. Wood materials are quite suitable for wallpapering. Preparation of the base is reduced to sealing seams and joints. Chipboards need to be treated with starting, and then finishing putty... It is not necessary to completely putty plywood structures, it is enough to cover the seams and apply a layer of primer after drying.

After preparing the base, the strips are cut taking into account the direction of gluing perpendicular to the wall with the window. A small margin is left on each canvas for an even trim. Before gluing paper wallpaper to the ceiling, the canvases need to be spread with glue. The composition is applied different ways- chaotic, perpendicular, zigzags. The most common option is to apply glue to the center of the web and distribute it to the edges of the strip. The edge of the panel is wrapped 30 cm and the part coated with glue is placed on the main strip, which is folded like an accordion and glued to the ceiling.

Masters advise! If you plan to glue heavy wallpaper, you need to pierce the canvas with a needle in several places with a step of 20-30 cm so that air bubbles do not accumulate under the strip.

Wallpaper gluing technology

When choosing the direction of pasting, you need to adhere to the placement of wallpaper in the direction sun rays penetrating the windows during the day. Generally, technological process pasting is identical for different types of wallpaper, except for some nuances.

There is a slight difference how to glue vinyl wallpaper, paper or liquid on the ceiling:

  • Lungs paper materials glue with an overlap, well lubricating the joints, the canvas and the surface of the ceiling.
  • Pasting vinyl wallpaper on the ceiling they are performed end-to-end, you can glue the strip and the base with glue.
  • Liquid wallpaper is soaked, kneaded by hand and applied with a wide trowel for textured plaster.

The ceiling is finished with a decorative styrofoam skirting board. Gypsum and polyurethane samples are not suitable - they are heavy and will pull down the wallpaper. Craftsmen argue about what to glue first - a plinth or wallpaper. If there is no experience, paste the wallpaper, cut off the excess part of the strip as evenly as possible. And then decorative fragments are glued, which decorate the room and hide the ugly trimming edges.

Advice from the master! You can glue the skirting board with glue or putty. You need to apply the material in a small amount - when you press the decorative product to the ceiling, some of the mixture may appear on the wallpaper.

Example of calculating the number of rolls

Before buying a finishing material, it is important to decide on the footage of the ceiling and the number of rolls. It should be borne in mind that manufacturers produce products of standard and non-standard width, the length of the canvases also varies. Standard roll parameters are 53 and 106 mm in width and 10.05 m in length. But on sale there are canvases of foreign manufacturers, the parameters of which are 70, 90, 140 cm in width, and the length can reach 15 m.

An example of a calculation is carried out for a room with dimensions of 3x4 meters, provided that the ceilings are pasted with standard wallpaper 53 cm wide - it is much easier to work with them. By the same principle, you can calculate the consumption of meter products. The measurements of the room are carried out along two walls to obtain the ceiling area. It is necessary to take into account the location of the windows, on which the direction of gluing depends. It is customary to place the canvases perpendicular to the windows, then the seams between the stripes will be practically invisible. Payment:

Blade length - 3 meters + 10-15 cm for trimming.

The roll width is standard, 53 cm.

The length of the room is 4 m, there are two strips for each meter.

The number of strips is 8 pieces of 3.15 m.

If there are 10.05 m of wallpaper in a roll, 10.05 / 3.15 = 3.19 stripes will fit in it.

You need to round down - 1 roll = 3 stripes. And in total it is required to glue 8 strips, which means that 8/3 = 2.66 rolls, rounded up. Result - with the given dimensions of the room, you will need 3 rolls of wallpaper for gluing the ceiling.

Important! Since wallpaper is different lengths and width, this moment must not be overlooked when carrying out calculations. Craftsmen recommend buying a roll in stock in case of unsuccessful wallpaper gluing.

Step-by-step instruction

Sticking process ceiling wallpaper not as difficult, but requires some dexterity and quick action. To fix the stripes clearly, you need to prevent the glue from drying out.

The technology of correctly gluing wallpaper to the ceiling consists of several stages:

  1. Preparation of the base - cleaning from the old coating, washing, covering up cracks and joints, if necessary - installing drywall sheets to level the ceiling.

2. Priming the surface with special compounds. They form a thin film that ensures good adhesion of the glue and a strong hold of the wallpaper.

3. Drawing of markings. Useful step but not always experienced craftsmen it is carried out. "Beginners" are advised to make markings by placing stripes perpendicular to the windows and marking the boundaries of each canvas.

5. Rolls of wallpaper are cut to the previously measured length, taking into account the pattern, if any, and a small margin around the edges. Roll the blade face down on a clean surface.

6. Preparation of glue. The dry mixture is diluted with water. To prevent lumps from forming, the glue is poured in a thin stream into the required volume of water, stirring constantly.

7. Infusion of glue. The composition is mixed (some masters recommend 7-10 minutes) and leave to infuse for up to half an hour so that the glue swells. Mix again and proceed to pasting.

8. Sticking the first page. The prepared glue is applied to the base and to the strip, if it is paper wallpaper. When working with vinyl on a non-woven base, only the ceiling is smeared with glue, but wallpaper is also possible.

9. Apply the strip without delay, carefully aligning it with the marking line. They are well pressed against the ceiling and the air is expelled with a dry roller or a clean rag from the center to the edges of the canvas.

10. The stock is cut off without waiting for the glue to dry. To do this, apply a wide spatula to the edge and trim the excess with a sharp knife along work surface tool.

11. Bonding the rest of the fragments. If the wallpaper is glued with an overlap, the edge of the first strip is coated with glue and the next piece is glued. When working end-to-end, you need to align the edges of the strips well.

The final stage of work is gluing decorative skirting board, and if wallpaper for painting is selected - painting the glued ceiling. You can do the work alone, but it is better to glue the ceiling with an assistant. This speeds up the process and allows you to make the finish better. In the interior, the ceilings covered with wallpaper will look beautiful and original.

How to glue wallpaper on the ceiling (23 photos)

Wallpapering the ceiling

1. Before gluing the wallpaper, we will prepare the ceiling in the same way as the walls. The surface of the ceiling intended for wallpapering will be leveled, dried and cleaned of dust and dirt.

2. Sticking new wallpapers over old ones is allowed if they are firmly in place and have no bulges. All loose wallpaper and gluing must be removed. This is good for walls, but for ceilings it is better to clean the surface down to the slab (plaster), so it is safer.

3. Ceilings newly plastered or peeled from old wallpaper or paint, when pasting them with plain wallpaper, will be cleaned with flak (a piece of wood wrapped with sandpaper) and pasted over the ceilings with paper.

4. The seams between the floor slabs, as well as the damaged areas, are pre-filled with putty, cleaned and pasted over with a serpyanka (you can use a simple bandage).

5. When wallpapering ceilings previously painted with glue, casein or lime paint, we will completely remove the paint and straighten the plaster.

6. If the ceilings were painted with oil paint, remove the oil paint if it does not adhere well to the surface. We will straighten the cleaned places. It is not required to glue oil-painted surfaces with paper.

7. Simple wallpaper we will glue overlapping, embossed and other dense wallpaper - end-to-end on the surface, pasted over with two layers of waste paper. When gluing wallpaper with an overlap, the edges of the panels should face the light - towards the windows.

8. After finishing the pasting of all walls and ceilings at the cornice we will glue a narrow strip - a border. We run the wallpaper behind the skirting boards and platbands, and do not cut them off. Wallpapering the edges of platbands and skirting boards is not allowed (they quickly fall behind).

9. Pasting of surfaces with linkrust is carried out end-to-end without sticking paper with the selection of panels by color.

10. It is better to paste over the ceilings in three. Wallpaper glue should be thicker than when pasting walls. Since insufficiently viscous glue is not able to hold wet wallpaper on the ceiling.

11. Pre-cut and sorted wallpaper will be glued to the ceiling in the direction of light from the windows:

first spread the wallpaper on the floor with glue;

then the place on the ceiling where we will glue the wallpaper;

we will give the panel to two people working at the top ( better canvas do not fold, so there is less hassle with straightening it);

two on top press the cloth in different places to the ceiling, then from the beginning of the cloth one smoothes the cloth, and the other holds those parts of the wallpaper that are just tacked to the ceiling, we glue the wallpaper exactly in place and quickly, otherwise they may come off.

28. Pasting the walls with wallpaper. Pasting walls with textured wallpaper for painting

First, the area of pasting is calculated by multiplying the perimeter of the room (the sum of the lengths of all walls together with the door and window openings) to its height. By multiplying the width of the roll by the length, you can determine its area. After that, it is necessary to divide the area of pasting by the area of one roll. This will result in the number of rolls to be purchased.

If you have chosen wallpaper with a repeating pattern, buy another roll in reserve - for allowances for joining the pattern.

Surface preparation

Walls need to be cleaned, cracked, smoothed and primed. If there is old wallpaper on the wall, the craftsman will remove it with a spatula. Steam if necessary (wet the walls hot water, leave to get wet for a couple of hours). To get the wallpaper as wet as possible, you can scratch it. If the walls have been painted, you will need sandpaper.

Make sure the wall is dry before pasting.

Remove baseboards, sockets and other decorative items that may interfere with pasting.

Glue preparation

For gluing, the type of glue recommended by the manufacturer is usually used. of this type wallpaper. To obtain the desired proportion of glue, you need to follow the recommendations that are indicated in the instructions for this glue.

Generally, the heavier the wallpaper, the thicker the glue should be.

When preparing the glue, there should be no lumps left.

Preparing wallpaper and pasting walls

The craftsman cuts the rolls into pieces, the length of which is equal to the height of the wall. Cutting of rolls is also carried out taking into account the necessary allowances for joining the pattern. Then the finished panels are laid out on the floor face down, on which polyethylene or newspapers have been previously laid. The specialist applies the glue evenly with a brush from the middle to the edges. To make the glue better absorbed, the wallpaper is folded as follows: from the bottom to the middle, with coated surfaces inward, or like an accordion. Then you need to leave the wallpaper alone for a few minutes, let the glue soak. They start pasting the walls from the window so that the ends of the panels do not cast shadows. The first strip is glued from the corner, and it is especially carefully smoothed with a rubber spatula or a clean cloth from the center to the edges, since all other strips will "dance" from it. The master immediately wipes off the protruding glue with a clean damp sponge and then with a dry cloth.

The air temperature in the room should be from +5 to +20 ° С. Drafts during work, as well as within 24 hours after the end of pasting are unacceptable!

Wallpapering difficult places

Pipes and part of the wall behind the radiators can be painted with oil paint similar in color to the wallpaper. For batteries, wallpaper should be wound 10-20 cm, the main thing is that the non-glued part of the wall behind the battery is not noticeable.

In addition, you can wallpaper directly on water and gas pipes. In such cases, it is most convenient to use the leftovers after cutting. To do this, mark a strip equal to the diameter of the pipe on a piece of wallpaper that is suitable in size. Then the master cuts the wallpaper strips so that they completely cover the pipe and go 1-1.5 cm onto the wall.

Door and window openings are pasted over in the direction of travel. To do this, you need to glue the opening with a single sheet, drive out excess glue from under it. Then cut off the excess part of the wallpaper, taking into account the entry of the edge of the canvas under the door trim.

De-energize sockets and switches and unscrew the protective cover. The strips are glued directly over the hole. When the wallpaper is dry, you need to make a cross-shaped cut and cut out a circle with a diameter smaller than the outlet itself, then put the cover back.

Corners. If the angle is complex curvature, it is better to adjust the joint of the canvases to an angle or make a "cut" corner. You need to firmly press the wallpaper to the deepest part of the corner, and make an incision in the middle of the "extra" part. Then glue parts of the canvas with an overlap. Draw in the middle of the overlap with a wallpaper knife, removing excess wallpaper.

If bubbles appear on the surface of the wallpaper, they can be removed as follows: pierce the bulge with a sharp knife, then glue it with a thin brush. Then press the wallpaper with a cloth and smooth it with a brush.

It is enough to pierce small bubbles with a needle and smooth them out, or you can suck air out of the bubble with a medical syringe. But it is worth remembering that such methods are effective only when the wallpaper is still wet.

If the edges of the glued sheet lag behind the wall, then glue can be applied to the lagging surface with a thin brush and press the glued place with a cloth.
