What OSB is made of

OSB boards appeared in our country only a dozen years ago, but they have been known in the world for more than three decades, since the time they were invented frame technology construction of houses. For sheathing the frame, absolutely new material: durable and at the same time lightweight, reliable and easy to install - neither natural wood nor chipboard suited these parameters. This is how OSB, or OSB (Oriented Strand Board) was invented. It consists of layers wood shavings... The main binder is phenolic resins in combination with paraffin; in Europe, melamine binders are used for boards used in furniture production. In the outer layers, the shavings are laid along the slab, and in the inner layer - across. The mutually perpendicular arrangement of the chips makes it more resistant to external influences... We can say that for minimum thickness and low weight OSB achieves maximum strength indicators, and it is this material that gives rigidity to the entire structure frame pie... At the same time, it is OSB that may turn out to be the most vulnerable link in the entire structure - the members of our portal were convinced of this from their own experience. We will analyze the most common OSB problems and try to solve them with the help of experts.

European and American OSB standards

There are two classifications of OSB boards. According to the European standard EN 300, they are divided into four classes.

  • OSB1 - boards that are used in dry conditions; they are used to make furniture, upholstery. It is a non-structural material.
  • OSB2 - used indoors in dry conditions as a structural board.
  • OSB3 is used as a structural board in a humid environment, including outside structures. Due to the optimal ratio of cost, moisture resistance and strength, this material is most in demand by builders frame houses at FORUMHOUSE, including for facade cladding.

Urgenz FORUMHOUSE Member

I see no reason not to use OSB on the facade. It looks great (there is a texture, not a smooth sheet), lightweight (ease of installation), lasts much longer than wood.

OSB made in the USA and Canada are classified into three grades. The criterion is the level of water resistance of the binder chips:

  • Interior - for interior construction work in dry conditions.
  • Exposure 1 are structural panels that can withstand short-term exposure to moisture, so they can be used for interior decoration wet rooms and for outdoor use (subject to finishing with other material).
  • Exterior - withstand alternating cycles of wetting and drying, contact with the ground, prolonged exposure to adverse weather conditions.

The following American standards roughly correspond to European standards:

  • OSB2 - Interior;
  • OSB3 - Exposure 1;
  • OSB4 - Exterior.

OSB in frame construction

Due to the popularity of frame houses, OSB boards are one of the most talked about FORUMHOUSE materials. Disputes about how the "right pie" should look like, how to reduce the cost without compromising the strength of the structure, what is the role of OSB in frame structure, is it possible to use OSB for facade decoration.

On the diagram proposed for discussion by the FORUMHOUSE participant BulKonst, two options for a frame pie are shown: in Figure A - a classic pie, in Figure B - a budget version of the classic version (saving by 1.5 times).

The idea to reduce the cost of the pie by removing such an element from it as covering the frame from the outside with OSB boards did not meet with understanding at FORUMHOUSE, because "in construction, a stingy pays three times." Namely OSB gives reliability to the entire structure.

Svidig FORUMHOUSE Contributor

Without an OSB, the house can be folded.

OSB slabs showed themselves at their best during the earthquake in Japan: frame houses survived, although wood and stone collapsed nearby.

Soloviev Artem Project Manager Soppka OSB Protektor

The main purpose of OSB boards is to provide structural rigidity.

It is OSB that gives the house the opportunity to stand for several decades. But this is in case the pie is mounted correctly. Technology frame house building taking into account local conditions in Russia is just being created, it is a little over ten years old. Therefore, there are still no precise, scientifically verified technologies for frame housing construction in Russia. In fact, so far each construction company more or less their proprietary technologies- therefore, there is always a possibility that the ventilation will be done incorrectly, and unprotected OSB boards will end up in an environment with high humidity and become infected with mold or fungus, which will spread further to the insulation and the frame.

How to protect OSB

FORUMHOUSE member with nickname The fast and the furious discovered that the street side of his house "went badly" when he lived there for 4.5 years. It turned out that there was a complete destruction of the NDE.

Fast and Furious FORUMHOUSE Member

I read from the SIP-builders what they are, SIP-panels, wonderful. And they do not burn in fire, and do not drown in water, and a pound weight hangs on one self-tapping screw. Only the fungus eats her so calmly and makes fun of me.

For a long time it was believed that only the frame should be covered with biosecurity, and OSB plates and other structural elements do not need this. This is wrong - OSB-boards were not covered with bio-protection simply because until recently there was no compound that would have good adhesion to OSB boards.

The house is treated with a specialized fire retardant compound

Artem Soloviev

In a frame house, everything is interconnected. The frame holds the house, and OSB makes the frame stronger. Even the counter-lattice on which the OSB boards, must be treated with a bioprotective compound. We have our own products to protect every structural element.

OSB for facade decoration

Birdofprey

If you want to throw money away, then you can use the OSB as a finish, and a complete one.

For facade decoration at home on OSB boards can be used clinker tiles, ceramic tiles imitating brick, siding or imitation timber. Also, the slabs can be plastered.

If the choice of finishing for OSB boards fell on plaster, then there may also be problems with the choice of additional material. Such work cannot be carried out directly on OSB, the boards must be protected.

Nadegniy Member of FORUMHOUSE

For OSB, the plaster will hold for some time, cracks at the joints of the OSB will appear in the first winter, the edges of the OSB sheets will gradually swell, and the finish will darken with them.

Here are the plaster cake variations that have been used successfully at FORUMHOUSE.

If overlays were made:

  • OSB + primer + elastic plaster + onlays.
  • OSB + concrete contact + elastic plaster + linings.
  • OSB + primer + reinforcement. mesh + plaster + overlays.

If no overlays have been used:

  • Wet facade: OSB + PPS (expanded polystyrene; PSB-S 25F) + base reinforcing layer + decorative plaster.
  • OSB + reinforced mesh+ primer + putty + elastic plaster.
  • OSB + 2 layers of glassine + mesh + plaster.

OSB boards can be simply painted. Precisely to paint - a simple varnishing is not suitable, varnish does not protect from ultraviolet radiation, it is necessary to give the wood a color. Now, by the way, paints have appeared that are many times cheaper than European ones.

Artem Soloviev

Over time, the sun will burn out the resin from the surface of the OSB board, the chips will move away, cracks will appear, into which moisture will enter. Naturally, with the changing seasons and from constant freezing and thawing, the chips will move even more.

An example of home decoration using facade paint

Microorganisms form in these crevices. Grey colour OSB board indicates that the board is ALREADY infected.

Should the boards be putty before painting? Perhaps, the structure of OSB, untouched by the putty, looks better than a smooth sheet and more resembles the original half-timbered timber.

Members of our portal, who have extensive experience with OSB, recommend to approach the choice of slabs for facade finishing responsibly. Regardless of which class of OSB you choose, try to keep their top layer free of bark. If there is still a bark on the sheet, it is carefully separated with a sharp instrument and torn off.

Before talking about technical details and the intricacies of the inner lining of OSB or OSB plates (they are also OSB, OSB sheets), it is worth considering the feasibility of this event. Indoor installation of OSB boards takes place in two cases, namely:

  1. If you have frame house and the frame is not sheathed yet.
  2. If the pattern and texture of OSB boards are an element of decor.

If you just need to level the walls, then drywall is better suited for this purpose, since it is cheaper and more convenient to work with during installation and further finishing.

House exterior cladding technologies are outlined in the article:. Here we will consider the question correct installation OSB slabs on the walls inside the house.

The choice of plates for mounting OSB on walls inside the house

When using any material inside the house, including OSB boards, you should pay attention to its harmlessness to the health of the inhabitants of this house. It has already been 34 years since the appearance of OSB boards, and all these years the debate about the environmental friendliness of OSB boards has not stopped. In fact, there are grounds for these disputes, since indeed, when gluing chips, polymer resins containing formaldehyde are used. But formaldehyde is also found in many other surrounding things, for example, in fabrics in chipboard furniture, combustion products, etc.

OSB slabs on the walls inside the house.

To exclude the poisoning of people with formaldehyde, enlightened Europeans established control over the production of OSB boards and divided the harmfulness of the boards into classes. Plates with formaldehyde emission class E1 are harmless to human health and are used in the construction of residential buildings. Therefore, when buying OSB panels, choose a reliable and trusted manufacturer, as your health may depend on it. The Austrian four-star hotel Arlmont, the interior decoration of which is replete with OSB panels, will say better than any words about the environmental friendliness of OSB panels.

Hotel Arlmont, OSB sheets are used in the interior decoration.

OSB boards are divided into water resistance classes:

OSB-1 is the class of board most exposed to moisture and has the lowest strength. Such boards are used for the production of furniture.

OSB-2 is a class of boards with the same moisture resistance as OSB-1, but more durable. Such boards can be used for wall cladding in dry rooms.

OSB-3 - moisture resistant boards with high strength. They are suitable for installation in wet rooms... But with prolonged contact with water, they are deformed.

OSB-4 - boards with maximum moisture resistance. They are able to withstand prolonged contact with water.

OSB4 boards are not widely popular due to their price, which is on average twice as high as that of OSB3 boards. Therefore, OSB3 boards are widely used. If they are treated with a primer or painted with paint, then such plates become resistant to prolonged contact with water.

Wall cladding of a frame house from the inside

Before proceeding to interior cladding frame house, it is necessary to insulate the walls, close the frame from the outside and the insulation with vapor barrier.

It is recommended to insulate the walls mineral wool, and better slab, since it is easier to work with it than with expanded polystyrene, it holds better in vertical structures and does not sink down, which happens with fiberglass insulation. Other heaters are not excluded and are also suitable for insulating the walls of a frame house. More details with various heaters can be found in the article:.

After the walls are insulated, they must be closed with a vapor barrier. Vapor barrier membrane protects the wall from moisture penetration into it, which will keep the house frame and insulation dry. The vapor barrier is attached with the usual construction stapler, with an overlap of 10-15 cm and glued together with a special double-sided tape.

An example of the construction of a wall of a frame house. WITH inside laid on the frame vapor barrier film, OSB plates are attached on top of it.

The sheathing itself is made as follows, the sheets one after another are alternately screwed to the frame of the house. The gap between the sheets is 3 mm. Sheets are screwed with self-tapping screws for wood with a length of 35-40 mm. All holes (for windows, doors, mounting holes) are cut with a jigsaw.

Decorative wall cladding with OSB plates and lathing

It is best to use as a crate metallic profile as for plasterboard. It is easy to install and does not deform like wood. When choosing wooden battens for the lathing, it is better to use dried wood bars, because such bars bend and curl less when they dry out. Installation technologies in both cases are not fundamentally different, therefore, we will consider them using the example of a crate made of metal profiles.

In order to sheathe the inner walls with OSB, you need to start by installing the sheathing on the walls of the room.

The crate mounting technology is as follows:

1. First, you need to install the starting profile, which is mounted on the adjacent walls, floor and ceiling as in Figure 1. On the sides, the profile should stand strictly vertically and close around the perimeter with the upper and lower profile.

Figure 1. The starting profile is mounted to the adjacent wall. And it closes with the upper and lower profile.

2. After installing the starter profile, it is necessary to make the markings on the wall for the suspensions. Since the suspensions will hold the vertical posts of the sheathing, it is necessary to mark in such a way that two solid OSB sheets meet in the middle of the profile, you also need to install one profile in the center of each solid OSB sheet.

The hangers are attached to the wall. The crate is attached to them.

3. Mount the profile. It is important, when fixing the profile on suspensions, to control the plane of the sheathing with the rule, so that in the future there is no “hole” or “belly” on the wall.

Installation of OSB boards on an internal wall using lathing.

For repairs in an apartment, as well as in the construction of individual frame houses, a relatively new material is increasingly being used, which is called an oriented strand board (OSB or OSB, if you use transliteration from English).
The use of OSB boards allows you to simply fill large areas with a light, even and solid base, without spending a large number time and money.

However, after the end of this work, the question often arises of how to cover the OSB board in order to preserve its appearance and operational properties on long term... In this article, we will give some practical tips on how to finish the finish. various designs made from OSB.

Where OSB boards are used

The growing popularity of OSB determines their use in a wide variety of areas, from construction to the production of furniture, packaging and interior finishing of truck bodies. Most often, the problem of surface treatment occurs when carrying out the following types of work:

  • the device of floors;
  • mounting internal partitions and floors;
  • external cladding of frame houses.

The greatest difficulties are caused by the coloring of OSB plates located on outdoors, since the coating used must adhere reliably to the surface of the slab, protect it from external influences (sunlight, water, snow, etc.) and withstand significant temperature fluctuations.

OSB surface finishing for flooring

To build a flat surface for finishing floors, use. This category has sufficient strength and moisture resistance in order to provide solid foundation for floors installed both on concrete screed and on wooden logs located directly above the open ground.

Depending on the type of flooring, the OSB board can be laid different types coatings:

  • Varnish... varnish is made in several layers on a thoroughly cleaned and degreased surface. If increased requirements are imposed on the quality of the floor, it is better to use sanded slabs, in otherwise the base needs to be processed sandpaper or with an iron brush, sanded by hand and then primed. After varnishing, the surface of the board retains its structure and forms an even and smooth surface.
  • Roll materials... To cover with linoleum or carpet, it is necessary to ensure that there are no irregularities in the contact points of the plates. For this, expansion gaps are processed with elastic silicone sealant and thoroughly cleaned. Best results are obtained when using slabs with the smallest thickness.
  • Tile... For the installation of tiles, you must use special adhesives for joining ceramics and wood.
  • ... When using this flooring, you only need to prepare a flat base, which, if properly used, turns out to be almost perfect.

Finishing of internal partitions

The technology for manufacturing OSB boards involves the use of various binders, such as resins, dyes, essential oils etc. With direct application of finishing materials, these substances can bleed through on subsequent layers of the coating. Therefore, finishing OSB indoors should begin with applying a primer.

Some board manufacturers add wax or paraffin to the resins so that their work surface becomes smooth and slippery. To work with such slabs, it is necessary to use a primer paint containing quartz sand, which helps the following coating elements to adhere to the surface.

After priming, the OSB board can be processed with any facing materials:

  • Varnish. The technology for using varnish is the same as for flooring.
  • Dye. Better to use paints and varnishes on the basis of water, because they let steam better, which provides a more comfortable microclimate in the room. Usually, the same paints are used for interior work as for ordinary wood. When using water-based paint types, some deformation of the board is possible due to swelling of chips in it, therefore, it is advisable to evaluate the effect of a particular coating on a test panel before use.
  • Wallpaper. It is not recommended to glue the wallpaper directly onto the board for the reasons described above. They are fixed on a pre-primed wall using wallpaper glue with the addition of PVA.

External finishing of OSB boards

Application of oriented strand board as outer cladding requires compliance certain rules arising from. Of course, the optimal solution is to use traditional species finishes - clinker tiles, siding or lining, however, the use of OSB in construction is often dictated by the need to obtain a result at the lowest cost, therefore, OSB painting is the most popular.

Sheathed OSB external house wall

For this, any dye intended for the external treatment of ordinary wood is suitable. It is especially important to consider the following points:

  • The most vulnerable part of the OSB board is its ends. Therefore, to process the expansion gap between the plates, it is necessary to use acrylic sealant and make sure that it evenly fills all existing cavities.
  • Experts recommend that all sharp edges and edges be machined until rounded with a radius of at least 3 mm. This is necessary to evenly distribute the paint over the surface of the board.
  • All surfaces must be primed and sealed prior to application of the final coat.

    It should be taken into account that the most porous part of the board is its edge, therefore it is necessary to carefully monitor its processing, given that it absorbs more paint than the main plane of the board.

  • The use of water-based primers and sealing solutions can cause the wood fibers to swell over time, so sanding is sometimes required after they dry.
  • The paint must be applied in several thin layers. Wait until the previous one dries before applying a new layer.
  • When choosing how to paint an OSB board, it must be borne in mind that some types of transparent dyes can lose their properties under the influence of sunlight. It is best to use water-based or oil-based paints, since water-based paints can cause surface deformation, they are recommended for treating areas that do not have high requirements for outward appearance... Otherwise, it is better to use oil-based formulations.

Thus, for the treatment of surfaces from OSB panels, in most cases, you can use the same finishing materials as for ordinary solid boards. At the same time, such products are easy to assemble, form an even layer and withstand the required load well. Therefore, OSB boards are optimal solution for fast and inexpensive construction of building structures.

Usage sheet materials in the construction and finishing of housing - a well-known business. But if in the past it was necessary to manage only chipboard, fiberboard or plywood, today the ranks of traditional samples have been replenished with new analogues with improved properties, which makes them more suitable for certain types of work.

One example of such products is OSB boards for interior decoration, which will be discussed below.

What is OSB board?

OSB (OSB) is an oriented strand board. The material is a panel made from pressed softwood shavings and deciduous trees. Chip sizes can be from 60 to 150 mm.

OSB plates have high strength and density, due to the combination of several layers in them. In the middle, the shavings are located across the sheet, and in the lower and upper layers - along.

All layers of material are pressed under high temperature and pressure and impregnated with waterproof resins and paraffin. Used as a binder phenolic and formaldehyde resins. The finished slabs have a homogeneous structure - no cracks, chips or cavities.

Is it harmful to use a slab for interior decoration?

The possibility of using OSB for finishing depends on the marking of the product, which in turn is determined by the amount of synthetic resins in the material, which release during operation harmful fumes.

The largest amount of toxic substances (from 10 to 30 mg per 100 g of dry matter) is contained in plates of class E2 and E3. OSB panels marked E0 and E1 contain a minimum proportion of harmful components - from 6.5 to 10 mg. These are, as a rule, products of foreign manufacturers: Glunz (Germany), Norbord (Canada), Egger (Austria).

Thus, the most suitable for use for interior decoration are the products of the last two brands.

Materials of the same class E2 and E3 can only be used for outdoor work.

To protect yourself from buying "dangerous" material, it is worth considering some points that partially determine right choice OSB:

  • smell of slabs. With high content harmful substances the material smells strongly of formalin and cheap plastic;
  • products must have a certificate certified by the stamp from the manufacturer or supplier. A copy of the document can be requested from the seller;
  • it will also not be superfluous to inspect the packaging, if any. Products from serious manufacturers are usually labeled and provided with information inserts.

How to make a partition from OSB inside the house and with what screws to fix it?

OSB - quite suitable material for the construction of internal partitions of rooms. Strength and a light weight sheets clearly testify in favor of this product. OSB boards can be mounted on (like gypsum board) or on a wooden frame.

If the second option is used, the wood should be treated with protective materials against mold and mildew, as well as fire retardants.

Now with regard to partition installation diagrams, which will be considered using the example of a wooden frame:

  1. At the place of installation of the structure, markings are made. Lines are drawn along the floor and ceiling, which will serve as guidelines for the installation of horizontal guides.
  2. Along the marking lines, beams with a section of 4x6 cm are fastened.If the wall will be subjected to serious loads (for example, it is planned to hang furniture on it), it is better to use thicker bars - 5-8 cm. The guides are fastened with dowels.
  3. Vertical racks are installed, which are fixed to the horizontal beams using metal corners and self-tapping screws.
  4. The spacing between the posts depends on the width of the slab, which is different. So, if the transverse size of the OSB sheet is 125 cm (a value inherent in European brands), then optimal distance between axles vertical bars- 62.5 cm. In this case, it will be possible to screw the edges and the middle of the slab to the frame.

  5. After installing the racks, the OSB panels are mounted.

They are fastened with self-tapping screws, whose length depends on the thickness of the sheets and should be 45-50 mm more than this value. For example, when using a material with a thickness of 12 mm, the recommended length of self-tapping screws will be 60-65 mm.

Self-tapping screws are screwed in the middle of the plate with a step of 30 cm, at the edges - every 15 cm. The distance from the edge is 1 cm. A gap of 1 cm is left between the plates and the floor. The same gap should remain between the OSB and the ceiling.

Also, the panels should not be installed close to each other, but at a distance of 3 mm from each other. This will protect the sheets from deformation due to changes in humidity.

Internal wall cladding

This process, just like the above procedure, requires the preliminary construction of a frame, for which all the same wooden beams or profile. Now an example for arranging the lathing will serve metal version as the timber frame was discussed earlier.

Wall decoration with OSB slabs consists of the following stages:

  1. The first step is, as always, the markup.
  2. If the wall is uneven, you should find the most protruding part of it, from which you should push off. Lines are drawn along the wall, after which the starting UD profile is attached to the floor and ceiling using self-tapping screws or dowels.

  3. Further, vertical CD profiles are inserted into the installed guides and also fixed - to the wall using self-tapping screws and metal hangers, to horizontal guides - with drilling screws. The spacing between the posts is the same as in the case of a wooden frame.
  4. To give rigidity to the crate, the vertical posts are reinforced with transverse profiles. At standard height ceilings (2.5 m), it will be enough to install two elements for each span.

Installation of slabs is carried out in accordance with the rules mentioned in the instructions for the construction of partitions.

How to decorate the slab indoors?

Interior finishing of wooden country houses as in the photo can be completely different in cost and design. For surface finishing from OSB sheets are used various materials... Let's consider them further.

Is it possible to mount drywall on OSB?

Can. Moreover, for this it is not necessary to use a metal profile, but it is enough to fasten the material to the base with self-tapping screws.

The main thing here is that the humidity level in the room was not high, since otherwise it can lead to deformation of the OSB and, consequently, the very plasterboard sheathing... Self-tapping screws are screwed in along the perimeter and in the center of the gypsum board in increments of 10-15 cm.

Painting with varnish and acrylic paint

Varnish increases moisture resistance OSB boards. This finishing method is good for damp rooms. Plates can be painted with any varnish intended for natural wood... The surface is cleaned of dirt, degreased, cleaned with sandpaper and primed. The varnished OSB has a smooth surface, but retains its texture.

Also a good option for finishing OSB -. It rolls well with a roller on the surface and forms a durable and breathable coating.

For the best effect, it is advisable to paint in two coats.

Plastering with gypsum plaster

Putty materials do not adhere well to wood. Therefore, it is best to use formulations that have maximum adhesion to wood surfaces. This can be dry mixes "Rodband" or "Goldband" containing polymer additives and most suitable for working with wood. Vitonit KR can be used as a finishing one.

Before filling OSB primed with a special compound, where glue, interlining and a little putty mixture are added. If this measure is neglected, then the impregnation of the base can act on finished surface, as a result of which the finish will become stained.

How to plaster the surface of OSB boards?

For plastering OSB, it is best to use special mixture... For example, Knauf sevener... The plaster finishing technology itself includes the following steps:

  • The joints between the slabs are putty and pasted over with a serpyanka.
  • The surface is treated with a primer (you can take Knauf Tifengrund).
  • The first layer of plaster is applied and the reinforcing mesh is embedded in it.
  • Covering and leveling layers are applied on top.

Glass wallpaper sticker

If the plates smooth (sanded), wallpaper can be glued directly to them. Otherwise, you will have to plaster and putty the surface, doing it according to the technology described above.

Glass fiber is glued to special compounds. In this case, dry mix "Methylane Fiberglass Premium" and granular composition "Methylane Granulate Premium" are suitable.

Learn how to glue wallpaper on OSB from the video:

How to glue ceramic tiles?

You can paste it in several ways:

  • fix the expanded mesh on the surface and lay the cladding on any adhesive for ceramic tiles;
  • install directly on the OSB board using an adhesive for deforming surfaces;
  • use epoxy grout instead of adhesive.

The liquid wallpaper

This type of finish is applied to the OSB just like a regular wall. You just need prepare the foundation by sealing the joints and treating the surface with a primer.

Per 12 hours before the start of work the composition is kneaded and left in a plastic bag. Finished material applied with a spatula evenly from 3 to 7 mm.

One of the advantages of such a material is that it is not afraid of small surface defects. They are simply smoothed out when the mixture is applied.

Is it possible to sheathe a bathhouse and a garage inside the OSB with a stove?

OSB sheets are a material that is suitable not only for finishing residential premises. It can also be used successfully for cladding or garage applications.

In the first case, of course, you only need to use eco-friendly brands of material.

OSB in the bath should be processed 2-3 coats of water-soluble varnish, which will give the surface a shine and protect it from the effects of moisture.

As for the cladding, here OSB of any marking is suitable, since in non-residential premises, concern for the environment is the tenth thing and the harmfulness of the material does not matter.

From the foregoing, we can conclude that OSB boards are a versatile product suitable for use for various types of finishes. This quality, combined with the strength of the panels, makes OSB a worthy representative of the sheet materials category.

How to putty OSB with your own hands - a detailed course for beginners:

The facade is a visiting card of any country house... Despite the huge selection of modern and proven facade finishing options, users of our portal are not afraid to experiment.

Interesting experience of a member of FORUMHOUSE with a nickname Victor Banev, who decided to ennoble old cottage, having made a facade from OSB (or OSB, oriented strand board) with further imitation of a half-timbered layout on them.

Durability of OSB

Usually, everyone who decided to do something like this is primarily concerned with the question - what will happen to the facade in 3-5 years if it is sheathed with OSB.

Someone thinks that the plates will swell, tk. OSB is not finishing material, intended for use on the "street". Someone believes that such a cladding option is possible and moreover, optimal in terms of reducing financial costs and the possibility of self-repetition.

Victor Banev FORUMHOUSE user

Whether or not to use OSB on the facade - opinions differ. I decided that the game was worth the candle in terms of speed, ease of installation and low cost of such a facade. Just note that the facade is made ofOSB is an economical option for thrifty summer residents. To decorate a capital structure - a cottage, more weather-resistant materials should be used.

Looking ahead, let's say that the lifespan of a facade made of OSB boards has already passed the third year, and how it looks is clearly demonstrated by the following photo.

Wall Pie with OSB

The result is impressive, but now let's get down to practice. There is an old uninsulated summer cottage measuring 6x8 meters. External cladding- "inch" board. On top of the boards - painted hardboard. The place of alteration is the Leningrad region, i.e. terrain with more high humidity than Moscow, with frequent rains, fogs and a short summer.

It is required to insulate the building from the outside and make a beautiful facade. The budget is minimal. This means: work without hired workers, using relatively inexpensive materials and technology feasible for two people to do. Also interesting is the user's train of thought when choosing methods of facade decoration.

Victor Banev

I don't like the siding of the facade. It's boring. The block house is too expensive. The well-proven option with the use of DSP (cement-bonded particle board) for further painting and imitation of half-timbered timber also disappears. It is expensive and, due to the large weight, it is difficult to lift the sheets, and even more so, to mount them at a height. Sheathe clapboard - also not right. But I, as they say, fell for a half-timbered house and began to think how to bring this idea to life.

After going through several options, the user decided - to make the facade he liked so much for a half-timbered house on the basis of OSB plates. This, according to the user, is much cheaper and easier than messing with the DSP.

OSB based wall cake

As a result, the user came to such a "pie" of the wall. From the inside to the outside:

  • drywall;
  • wall;
  • insulation - mineral wool, laid in 2 layers, with a total thickness of 100 mm;
  • wind and moisture protection membrane;
  • counter lattice;
  • OSB 3 slabs with imitation of a half-timbered layout.

Since total savings are at the forefront, the first thing that a user of our site did Victor Banev, virtually laid slabs on the walls to minimize sawing and waste.

Moreover, sheet dimensionsOSB dictate the location of the decorative layout from boards (25x100 mm), which cover the joints of the slabs and imitate half-timbered timber.

After several intermediate layouts, it was possible to come to common denominator... A sheet of 224x122 cm in size, placed vertically, almost completely covers the wall, and overlays (boards) are needed only to protect the vertical joints of the slabs. We will tell you how to estimate the layout (having removed all the necessary dimensions from the facade in advance) using the example of the left wall of a house.

If you look at the figure above, you will notice that 2 whole sheets of OSB are placed vertically on the left and right. According to the results of measurements of the wall, it turned out that the distance (the remaining gap) in the middle is wider than one sheet, but already two. Those. - we need to sheathe the wall with two pieces laid horizontally, and then close the resulting horizontal seam... To maintain symmetry and overall layout design, add horizontal planks to the outermost OSB sheets and act in a similar way around the entire perimeter of the building.

The layout of the slabs and boards that cover the joints depends on the size of the house, and each case should be considered and calculated individually.

Installation of slabs

Having dealt with the layout design, we proceed to the installation of the plates. The work is simple, but there are a number of nuances. First of all, do not forget that curtain facade requires good ventilation for the release of excess moisture. If you neglect the main ventilation ducts, (gap) with an exit in the upper part of the facade, then the moisture will be locked inside, behind the OSB slabs, which do not allow steam to pass through well, and with a large thickness they are practically vapor-tight. Hence - a bunch of problems in the form of mold and waterlogged insulation.

The user has a gap at the top of the facade, approximately 1.5 cm across the entire width of the panel.

We proceed directly to the installation of OSB. Thickness of slabs in this option- 9 mm. This is quite enough, since sheets practically do not bear power load. First, on the walls, outside, we stuff the frame - a crate made of vertically placed wooden bars with a cross section of 50x50 mm.

We put between them, a bullet, mineral wool insulation.

Next, we fill the horizontal crate and, accordingly, we lay the insulation (the so-called cross insulation), orienting it horizontally. Thus, the joints of the slabs overlap. Then attach vapor-permeable moisture-proof membrane, with the obligatory overlap and gluing the joints with adhesive tape (double-sided).

Then we stuff vertical bars 30x40 mm, for fixing OSB sheets.

The pitch of the bars is 0.4 m, i.e. it turns out: 3 vertical strips per sheet. OSB was fixed with self-tapping screws, 6 pcs. for 1 bar. A gap of 2-3 mm was left between the sheets. Then the gap was carefully painted over, although I think that this is not necessary, since from direct contact with rain or dew, the ends of the slabs will be protected by wooden plates 100 mm wide.

In addition to insulation, the windows were replaced at the house, for which they were carried forward on frames made of a 5x15 cm board.

At the end of the cladding, they began painting the mounted walls.

Before painting, one additional layer of a universal bioprotective moisture-resistant impregnation, on a varnish base, was applied to the surface of the plates. Application was carried out from 2 sides.

Further, the plates, before being mounted on the walls (it is more convenient and faster to work this way), were covered with two layers of acrylic facade paint. At the coverage stage, the user made one mistake, which will be discussed below, but for now we suggest looking at what happened at this stage. According to the user, the result exceeded all expectations.

If you move 1.5-2 meters away from the facade, you get the impression that the walls are finished with plaster, and it is impossible to understand from the street that this is an OSB facade.

In addition to the decor, instead of the old porch, they erected summer veranda in the shape of the letter L from a bar of 15x15 cm.

After that we went to finishing- installation of half-timbered layout. The planed board has different lengths... Somewhere - 2, somewhere - 3 meters.

Diagonal jibs, 2.5 m each, are made from one solid board.

Boards are attracted along the edges with self-tapping screws. It turns out to be durable tight connection, which does not get moisture.

For contrast, the boards were painted dark brown.

Three-year operation of the facade has confirmed the correctness of the technology. The OSB boards at the ends did not swell, the paint did not peel off, the quality of the facade is invariably high. The only moment mentioned above: due to a mistake made at the installation stage (several boards were "forgotten" to be treated with biosecurity), the OSB outside was covered with fungus, which in places came out from under the paint.

Plates treated with protection were not touched by mold. This error turned out to be easily fixable. The cladding was removed and painted over again with paint (for safety - with an antiseptic additive). A year later, the fungus did not appear. What happened in the end Victor Banev, show the following photos.

The facade has been in use for 10 years. I walked over the CBPB slabs with a water emulsion 2 times, and that's it, since then I have not tinted anything for all this time. The paint holds just fine. I did everything myself. Sawed DSP 1200x3600x10 mm into squares with a side of 1200 mm. Otherwise, do not raise. The hardest part is making the top corner outside pieces. To sheathe, I had to climb the stairs, if I made a mistake with the saw, go down and saw again. He drilled holes for self-tapping screws in advance, then baited them with fasteners and, using a block system, lifted them up. Difficult, but worth it.
